It's running until Nov 21 or something like that. To help the people affected by the crisis in Yemen. Don't think it's a regular thing. No, haven't seen anything similar in other malls.

Pretty sure Elite Football club (JESS Jumeira and AR, Horizon Int'l and a couple of other locations) takes girls. Both in girls only teams and mixed. Also Spanish Football School (not Barcelona) takes girls as well. They are in sports City. HTH

Well said, Nomad! And the same applies to many other "killer" ingridients. Before considering goin anti-vac - check the devastating results the nascent anti-vac movement has produced in the US (Disney in FL; California, etc). Having said that - i dont believe in giving kids "extra" vac. If they've had MMR AND a booster - shouldnt require another one.

Hi, happy to add my 5p worth. To be honest, for a brand new school, I feel they are doing great. I know there were major hiccups with a bus service, but that's due to RTA, not school. They (school mgt) spent decent amount of time trying to sort it out from what I hear. Think it is a working fine? Not sure, as I am not using the service. If I were the school, I would not offer bus service in the first term / year while the pupil numbers are not massive. Sorry to hear about someone's child having issues with a teacher. All teachers I've so far (2 children) have been fab. Bu teacher / child chemistry can go wrong. In any school. Long hours. From the start the school said hours will be 7:45/8-4, so not sure why someone would be fed up - they didn't expect it?! For us, it is actually only half an hour more than the old school + after school club. But they do SOOOO much more at Hartland. Also younger years (yr 1-2) can choose to finish at 3 or stay for an after school club till 4. I know there is a coven (sorry, meant a group ???) of moms who moved from another school, who grumble and moan, pick at anything and everything (sometimes in a very aggressive manner). Not nice to be around such negative group, hope your friend didn't fall into it. Sure, there've been some issues (e.g. they only started using the pool this week, need to come to school in PE if there is sport as PE changing rooms not ready, etc). But I'd expect any new school to have teething issues. It is unrealistic not to. But the management and teachers are passionate, enthusiastic and eager to resolve any issues. Makes a nice change from "you don't like it - leave" attitude of some more established schools. Sorry for a bit of rant. Hope this helps.

Dr Daniel at Just White Dental Clinic is lovely. The clinic is on JBR opposite IHOP and has valet parking. Daniel has extensive experience with teeth whitening and will be happy to talk to you about it. 04 399 8440 or www.justwhitedental.com Hubby went to Dr Daniel too! First for a checkup (friend of a friend recommended as he was her dentist in UK!), then for whitening. He liked that he got several options for whitening, wasnt hard sold. He (hubby) called a couple of other practices to compare prices, and was happy with Dr Daniel's package. And he likes the result.

Last year I gave our agency helper an MoE gift card 250-280 (I Think, can't remember)... This year just 300 cash... And I gave 100USD when she went back to her country on holidays.

But what more expertise do they bring to child nutrition? Agreed! If it were Jamie Oliver - I'd kind of see the point (he ran numerous campaigns on school lunches in the UK and, I think, even US)... Do schools really need to bring in such ideas to market their schools? What does that say about the people running a school? Apparently - some schools do! It just might become a great indicator of a school's "true colours" so to speak. So when should we be expecting the appearance of maids and butlers to serve the little darlings their celebrity cooked dinerkins? Haha. That will be included in platinum VIP options... Lol

NewbieD, we are at the same school. Agree that masterchef doesnt provide best quality, but there were certain dishes my children enjoyed so we chose those on an ad hoc basis, as a nice break from our packed lunch optins. However most of the time at least one of them did not have time to eat all of it, let alone half! So personally am not convinced they will have time to eat 3 courses, and nor do I necessarily want to commit to every day, i liked the option of selecting! Ditto!!!! We did the 3-4 times a week and at least once a week they ran out of time to finish the meal. How they can eat 3 courses "with teachers and older children (!!!!) serving food at the tables" is beyond me... Oh, yeah and "still have enough time during their lunch break to run around and burn off energy"...(?!?!?!) ... (quietly musing if the person who wrote it has actually seen the kids at lunch break) Not only commit to every day, but for 4-8 weeks at a time!!!! I think 16AED is a great value Yes! I think so too - except it won't be for us. Before, with MasterC, we could CHOOSE! 15AED (2 course - juice, main and desert or fruit), which most people opted for, or 20 (3 course - juice, main, desert and fruit). Now we MUST cough up 26AED for 3 course (soup, main, desert). And no, there is NO promise of Organic anywhere. "The best and the freshest"... "100% additive! colouring and preservatives free" - yes... Organic - nope... There won't be much profit left for Him and the company (and the school) if he tries sourcing Organic chickens here... Daza, MollyDXB - at least it's reassuring good to know that kids at Foremarke like that chef's lunches... But I do fear I need to get my "sandwich making groove on" (hee-hee - good one, Daza!) But!!! OMG, he "himself will be visiting {school} this week" and we can purchase his book at "a special discounted price of AED150" and, omg, omg, omg, he "will be available to parents to get their book signed" (ahhhhhhh....)...

I just want to answer the question that OP asked directly. No, 1000 is not nearly enough for the expense you mention. Here are my rough calculations: Fitness classes: average 50 and 100 dhms per group class x twice a week - 650 dhm a month Breakfasts (to network, meet friends etc): on average 70 dhms(15-20 for a coffee, 30-50 hot dish, tip) x twice a week - 600 dhm a month Lunches (to network, meet friends etc): depending where you go, but unlikely to go to a food court, so say 100 on average x twice a week - 850 dhm a month Haircut - 200 dhms I haven't even mentioned nails or make up or presents or clothes and the total is already at 2,300. So if your situation is such that you get a certain budget from your DH - you need to ask for more than 2000.

I thought that was just on Friday, as it says temporary I recon it starts on Friday and goes on till the flyover (over the future canal) is finished. It is temporary in the sense that when the flyover is finished it will all be diverted back to current SZR. About 3-6 months to build in one direction and 3-6 months in other? 6-12 months?! ....{sigh}

The security is also of concern to me as all parents drivers nannies etc walk in the gates freely at pick up, if anyone wants to do something horrid its so easy, u walk right into the school with no check...parents id shld be mandatory if required to enter school premise.parents wait in the heat outside the gates till the gate is opened, making no sense if no security once the gate is opened in my opinion. I have another question, would you be ok with a male teacher for early years? I have never dealt with this but a friend of mine has a male teacher for her DD year 1 and she isnt too pleased..what are your thoughts? I'd have no issues at all with a male teacher. Especially if he's like the current one my friend has for her DD in year 1. I've seen him in action (helping settling a child a couple of times) - terrific! From the safety perspective, I wouldn't worry. Unlike the cleaner situation (when a child could be on her / his own in the toilet), a teacher is very very rarely alone with a child. There are other kids in class, TAs, etc... I do hope you are right about no male cleaners during school hours. I thought I saw a couple in the morning after one of the parents' workshops, but perhaps I'm wrong... edited by NewbieD on 05/10/2014

Our school (which coincidentally has two new "sister" schools opened) has both male and female cleaners (there seem to be no rule which areas are cleaned by females only). The issue of male cleaners has been addressed a number of times with the head and KHDA - with no result whatsoever. Puzzles us too, as the cleaning company is contracted and they could have requested female only. Male PE or swim or any other teacher (or nurse / doctor coming to think of it) doesn't bother us in the least.

Hi everyone Please does anyone know the price range for primary schools and nurseries in dubai frome the lowest to the highest? What about state schools? Any info much appreciated. Thanks British curriculum: it does vary depending on a particular year (grade). But to give you an idea, for FS2-yr6: From somewhere in the range of 37,000 -40,000 (dess/ jess/japs) to 70,000-80,000 (Nord Anglia / Foremarke)... With a lot of schools in between... State schools from what I know are only for Emirati and GCC. There are other curriculum schools as well: Indian, French, German... All priced differently.

In short - yeah, I'd go Atlantis. Long story as follows. We went last w/e. got there first thing in the morning, before it even opened. We got a few fun rides with no queues (snake ones and the racey ones on the mat) until about 11.30-12. After that it started getting crowded. Falcon Falaj (! Spelling!) was closed. The other 6seater (Loop something) and roller coaster were being checked out and only started working at about 12 and the crowds gathered very quickly. Plus you have priority pass holders "pushing in"... (At about 3 we waited in line for over an hour for the Loop 6 seater!!!! - grrrrrr... Kids refused to go elsewhere) So, yeah, Atlantis would be better IMHO.

Newbie D - where are you hearing that re kings? We are at the school and the only thing they have said may change are the dates for the spring holidays. It wasnt regarding just Kings, the way i heard it was part of the"unified calendar". But this is still not confirmed (and hopefully won't be!)... I was hoping there will be no changes to 2014/15...

I found that for my DS (even well after he turned 4) a nap was a must to avoid tantrums and over tiredness. It did push his going to bed time towards 8, but he was a happier monkey. My DD, on the other hand was fine without a nap by about 3.5..... Overall I think children tend to / are forced (becaused of schools, etc) drop the naps much earlier than they probably should...

No, Foremarke is nowhere near as big as Repton. Repton has 10 classes per year and I believe Foremarke only has 2. Very true. However it is only for now. The school capacity is for 8 classes per year with appr. 16 pupils per class. They ARE promising to grow slowly, not jumping from current 2 classes to 6 or 8 overnight - but there are no guarantees (apart from the currently prohibitive price)...

But are people actually buying at these prices? From my quick scan of lego pricing on souq now - most of them seem like cheeky markups for current sets (a set currently on sale on Lego site for £50 is listed at 1,276 dhms - loool)... True, there are some Lego sets that have gone EOL (their production have stopped) and even w/o original boxes can sell very well (on eBay), sometimes above their RRP but at realistic prices. eBay completed auctions is a good place to check these (and adjust for Dubai accordingly). What sets do you have, by the way? If you are still planning to sell them - I might be interested! (You could drop me the list by email if you prefer: newbiedubie at gmail dot com

Hi ladies if there are any ladies out there who could recommend any private transport company who could drop and pick up our son to and from Kings? We live in the Gardens, behind Ibn Battuta Mall. We would hate to lose out on this place ...also if there any alternatives/advise from some of you experienced ladies, would be very much appreciated. thanks a lot in advance! Alisha I think most people at kings (if cant do the pick up / drop off themselves) use a combo of driver + maid. I know RTA has a service (http://dtc.dubai.ae/en/OurService/Pages/In-Safe-Hands-Services.aspx it has been mentioned here before). Careem might do something similar as well (ain't gonna be cheap though). You might be able to find a parent who lives near you and can help on a regular basis, personally I'm not sure if I'd rely on this option. Even with best intentions, doing it day in day out might take a toll on someone, or what if the kids don't get along, or one will have to go early for a squad....

They also should not be encouraging you to leave without saying goodbye as this distresses the child even more as they feel abandoned! Can't agree more! When my first one was little, I read in one of the baby / toddler books a great logical explanation why you should never slip away. Basically, when you say good bye and the child sees you leave - they might get upset, even cry, but then you appear again and they very quickly learn the routine - mommy's here, then she waves and goes (and then she comes back). But if you just sneak out - to them it's horrendous, one minute mommy is there, the next she is gone. They have no idea when it could happen and try to never leave your side. It becomes more difficult to comfort / distract them after mommy has finally managed to sneak out. Made lots of sense to me and definitely worked for my children. Looking back it was actually funny (I was stressed of course at the time): I wave good bye, DS wails, I walk out he wails for maybe another (agonising for me) 3-4 seconds and then - nothing, not a peep. I peek through an outside window - he's happily playing with a toy. He was 11 months...

I found this method (from The Guardian article http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/wordofmouth/2011/feb/17/how-to-cook-perfect-rice) really works for me: 450g basmati rice Pinch of salt 1. Give the the rice a brief rinse under running water and then put it in a large pan and cover with cold water. Leave for at least half an hour. 2. Drain the rice and discard the soaking water. Put it in a large pan containing 585ml fresh water and a generous pinch of salt on a medium heat. 3. Bring to the boil, and give it a good stir. Cover tightly and turn the heat down very low. Cook for 25 minutes (28 for brown rice) then take off the heat – don't take the lid off! – and place on a wet tea towel. Leave for five minutes then fork through to fluff up.

Dragon/Newbie, Could either of you tell me how to get online access to it? There should be a small envelope in your DD's school bag/comm book - it has a unique code to be used for the questionnaire. Can't do it without the code. But apparently you can ask at the reception for this envelope if you can't find it!

Haven't posted for a while, but felt compelled to add to the highjacking subthread. As Dragon said - I hope people will fill out their parents' questionnaires for Kings! I raised the following among other concerns: overcrowded space (even with senior school gone - I don't see how the school was "originally intended for 5 classes"), additional facilities disappeared (and they were justification of raising fees last year over and above what KHDA allows for "outstanding" school) - imagine kids having their instrument classes between the doors of a side entrance!!!!. I do hope the thread won't be deleted!

@emisnre - we did, along with 4 or 5 others - so it's all a blur now :) They are in a small-ish preprep here, nurturing but also quite academic by nature - have to get the kids into the next school at 7+. Very difficult to make a decision from overseas, not being able to talk to current parents / pupils etc. So looking for any insights into +s / -s / key things to be aware of / for these schools (we did apply to a couple of others, but deffo no joy there).
