Hello, I am a remarried mother of a 7 year old in the process of relocating to Qatar. Here's all the stuff I needed: Copy of my divorce decree (which served as the court order for joint custody) Copy of my marriage certificate for my first marriage to my daughter's father (I was told they want to make sure that we were married when my daughter was born) Copy of my marriage certificate for my current marriage Passport for my daughter, which requires for my ex-husband to give a notarized consent. I had to also have my ex-husband to sign a separate notarized permission letter for my daughter to travel to Qatar. Copy of my ex-husband's current picture id (my ex-husband was REALLY wary about sending this). Currently my visa application is in progress. I was notified by my employer that they have everything they need, but it is pending since mid January. I don't know how long it usually takes to process a visa, but it's approaching the 4-6 week mark. So good luck.

Hi Curious Ann I posted that 2 pages back. I know they are bringing people over early to help open it. And I would assume some of us with a lot of experience clinically and management wise would go first to help. Makes sense. Guess we will all find out. So RRTNICU, was your entry visa approved yet? If so how long did that process take and do you have a start date yet?

Hello seahorse77, I just heard from another lady who "blew up" her sewing machine because she plugged it right into the socket... Also from the US. She didn't check the voltage apparently. I don't know how reliable the adapters are. Singer is a brand that's known in Doha. The bigger supermarkets like Carrefour have some simple Singer machine ranging between 150 and 230 USD or so. There is even a dedicated Singer Shop close to the souq area. Don't know whether this helps in your decision. cheers This is good to know as it gives me an excuse to ditch my current machine here in the US and upgrade to a newer model. Wa ha aaaa! (evil laugh)

Hello, I have researched this topic extensively. I will be moving to Qatar from the US and my family has plenty of electronics (2 pc laptops, one macbook pro, one iPad 2, one iPad mini, 2 iPhones and an android tablet). You have to check the voltage label on the back of any of the electronic items you are considering to bring with you. If it says 120 - 240 volts, your device will function without a voltage converter because it can handle the higher voltage in Qatar without blowing up. However, you will need an outlet adapter (which only changes the outlet prong type but does nothing with the voltage) For my personal experience checking the labels on my household items, I found that the laptops and phones will be fine, but kitchen appliances, my sewing machine and my daughter's digital piano will require a voltage converter. I am planning not to bring item to Qatar that needs a voltage converter. I hope this helps.

Hello, I am from the US and I was wondering if I should bring my sewing machine. I have a Singer 9970. I was wondering if I should bring it with me and buy a voltage adapter or if I should leave it here and the States and buy a new one. Any suggestions? edited by seahorse77 on 06/02/2015

Seahorse, if you are moving from the US, do not bring with you any 100 dollar bills printed before the year 2000, you will NOT be able to exchange them! Mimi, welcome in advance, life is a bit challenging here but once you adapt to it, it is actually nice. Best of luck! Thanks for that. I will probably not have any $100's. I was planning to use mostly credit and debit cards. I'm assuming that credit/debit cards are widely accepted. Please let me know this, because if not, I will need to be sure to bring plenty of cash (not pre 2000 bills). Thanks for the heads up.

Hi Seahorse77, Thank you so much for your reply! I have been exchanging emails with the schooling affairs team and they have been helpful and emailed my right back. We really like the American School of Doha but I feel we would be pretty far down the list in getting into that school. I know Qatar Academy is an excellent school so I would assume that QA Sidra, being a sister school, would be good as well. It's just hard not being there or not knowing anyone who has had a personal experience with their children in that school. I've tried to do my research looking for reviews or ratings by parents but I cant find anything. So, far the school situation has been the most difficult part for me. Thanks again for your comment! My daughter (7 year old) will be going to the GEMS Academy. However, I was just notified today by my agency of a new rule requiring the attestation of the last 2 school reports and requiring a residence permit before allowing kids to enter school. I heard it can take months to get a RP. Then, I read the article below confirming what my agency told me. Our plan was to leave in January. I don't know if this will push back our plans. http://dohanews.co/new-attestation-requirements-qatar-school-children-frustate-parents/ edited by seahorse77 on 13/12/2014

Sidra has a special team that helps get kids signed up for school. Ask them about it. I'm sure they can help you. I think its called "Schooling Affairs"

Hi everyone! My name is Myriam I'm 28, I'm married and have two children (5 and 2), I will be in doha the 5th january, I don't work and I don't know yet where I will live. I'm really worried about my future life in doha because of my situation (no work, no drive licence and two children...) here in france there is metro and you can do all you want by walk... hope meeting other mum to go out lunch or take kids to play area or park. don't hesitate to contact me! xo ;) Hi! I will be moving to Doha from the US. We do not have a date yet, but I suspect it will be in January or February. I am looking to build relationships with English/French families because my 7-year-old daughter speaks French. I'm new to the forum and unfamiliar with how to connect as I read in the rules section that we are not allowed to exchange personal info.

So, is there anyone here that has already relocated? I was told I would have to start working within 2 days of arrival. How soon do you get reimbursed for relocation expenses?

Just wondering if your profession requires a licence and if so how long that took? You say you;re waiting for your diploma to be authenticated, but do you already have your visa or was this a requirement for a visa? I have submitted all of my paper for a license and have been waiting now about a month. I have been told that once that is approved, then they apply for a visa and I can choose a relocation date. I too am aiming for mid January. Thanks I am a Registered Nurse and I do have a license, but I don't think it is required for this position because my position is administrative. I did have to have the board of nursing to send a certificate of good conduct, though. I was told that as soon as they have my degree, they will apply for the visa, which I was told is pretty much instantaneous to get. It's the Residence permit that takes a few months to process from what I understand.

Hi, I'm African American and I wondered the same thing. The United States has racial tendencies against people with darker skin tones like myself and I will be moving to Qatar soon. I had a Skype session with a white guy from London who worked in Qatar for 2 years. He is married to a Jamaican woman. He told me that his wife and daughter saw no different treatment. I am looking forward to that as I'm sure it will be refreshing.

Hi everyone- still in the beginning stages of Sidra. Has anyone heard anything about high schools- what is best etc. I have a 16yr old that will start his senior year in Qatar IF there is an appropriate school. He is willing and able( thank goodness!). Also, i'm wondering how Sidra is determining wage packages. That seems to be a hot item..........( i'm a nurse Anesthetist).. My daughter's not in high school, but Sidra has a School Affairs department and they seem to have relationships or agreements with certain schools in the area. The two names I heard mentioned are Qatar Sidra Academy and GEMS Academy.

I am a nurse who will be moving to Qatar from the United States in January to work for Sidra. Has anyone been allowed to relocate with their family in tact? Also, has anyone seen the housing accommodations? What are they like? I have a 1st grade daughter in her second year of the French Immersion program. I would like for her to continue that. Is anyone aware of schools in Qatar that either offer French Immersion programs or offer French as a foreign language?

Hello everyone! We will be new to Doha, arriving in September and we are trying to get our three girls, ages 5, 7, and 9, into the two French lycées there-Bonaparte and Voltaire. We have heard that it's extremely hard to get them into these schools, so I was wondering if anyone out there has some contacts at either or both of these schools? Our girls have always been in the French system and they would be coming from an official French lycée. They are bilingual French and English with American/Belgian passports. Is anyone out there able to help us? Of course, we will be be applying to the schools when registration starts in a few weeks but we could use any advice/suggestions/contacts if anyone has some. We would be so grateful!!! Many thanks, Tara Fraiture. mumof3, did you have any luck with the French schools? I'm in a similar situation. I am from the United States and I have a 1st grade daughter in her second year of the French Immersion program. I would like for her to continue that. We will be moving to Qatar in January as I have accepted a position with Sidra. Please let me know how this turned out for your family. edited by seahorse77 on 19/10/2014
