To help with the process, go in person to the bank with a letter addressed to the manager as private and confidential asking for a copy of the disputed cheques. You are within your rights to get a copy of these fraudulent cheques. Once you get them, give them to the police after taking a copy for your files. At this stage you do not need a lawyer as you can write the letter to the bank yourself and avoid unnecessary costs. I am not surprised to hear you have been treated well by the police as it is my experience as well. You are obviously a victim of fraud and the police is here to help you while finding the fraudster. Good luck with it all. It will take time but will be sorted out eventually.

Sorry to hear you have to go through all this. It may be helpful to get a local friend or a local work colleague to come with you to the police. It makes a big difference in speeding up processes as everything id in Arabic.

Someone posted on another thread there were 21 new schools opening in September. This should alleviate the problems people have had finding places for their little ones.

First of all, I need to mention that K12 brick and mortar school (so to speak) specialises in students with special needs, whether English is a second language for e.g. and not quite mastered to allow a student in a mainstream school or whether additional needs have been identified that mainstream schools in Dubai cannot help with. All the teachers are highly qualified with a special need focus or diploma (phd or masters you name it). Speak to them but to my knowledge students at K12 in Knowledge Village or K12 plus in Barsha have a minimum of grade 3-4. When my DS was at K12 last academic year, the youngest in his class was 10 years old. The curriculum is mix of computers and books and as you go through the years, there is more and more book studies.Give them a call again and find out about younger years. I highly recommend them. Thanks to K12 my son was able to integrate a fantastic small boys boarding school in the UK while here he was let down big time after he finished year 1 at a mainstream school in Dubai and no school would take him on because he was a special needs child.

To apply for a job at Emirates, look online as that is where the jobs are posted. For cabin crew, Emirates will normally have recruitment days in various countries depending on what nationalities they are looking for. Also a 90 day days visa may not be long enough to find a job especially as you are coming in July when recruitment is not as active as between September and May for e.g. $900 to last 3 months in Dubai ? where are you planning to live ? You are not allowed to rent a room in a house like in other countries. Why Dubai ? it is a difficult place at the moment to find a steady job. Good luck anyway.

Hi all I am moving to dubai very soon. We have a private cover for health through my husbands job but I have been recommended by a good friend that it's always worth having your own policy too as companies change them all the time . I need a recommendation for a really comprehensive cover where I don't have to co pay to see a Doctor in dubai etc(even if it's for a cold/ throat infection for the kids ) Our policy with my husbands job has a 20% copay on it. I am looking for something to cover everything - even if possible vaccinations. Plus a decent dental and optics cover with the health insurance Please ladies can you recommend which company I should use ? Thanks! I could be incorrect but I thought you are not able to carry two policies in the UAE. Can anyone confirm this or knows otherwise? Even if you pay double premiums, you cannot be covered twice for the same risk. Most insurance policies will ask you if you already have cover although if it is household or travel for e.g., they generally don't ask. Still you won't be able to claim twice if something happens. Health and life policies have to be underwritten once you have filled all the detailed and your premium will differ from someone's unlike travel for e.g. where it is almost a one fits all policy (except for people with specific pre-conditions or age related). HTH

Might be a good idea to see at what price similar models are sold at the dealership and apply a discount for selling it privately. You could also ask the dealership what they would give you for a car and similarly apply a premium to it to sell it privately. As a rule of thumb, after 3 years most cars will have lost between 45-50% of their value (some loose a lot more!). That said, some make and models hold their value better like Toyotas for e.g. here in the ME. Today's car market is quite depressed. There are many good cars which would have sold for a lot more money even last year. Good luck with your sale.

My recommendation is not to invest in Dubai now. There has been 30-40% increase in prices in last 2 years which has gone down by only 5%.Wait for a year or two, as property will surely come down by 40-50% due to excessive supply coming in a year and there are not much of buyers as investors have better options now. Many real estate agents have already filed for bankruptcy due to low number of transactions. These prices increases are likely on paper. The reality is : Russian money has left, oil is at half what is was a few months ago so investors from oil prodcing countries are not faring too well. The US dollar is also going up making property expensive in Dubai (due to the peg of AED to the USD).I agree that many real estate agents have gone bust and there will be more as there seemed to be an excessive amount of incompetent ones around. Those counting on 2020 as a recovery point are mistaken in my opinion. There will be perhaps a boom in tourism that requires hotel rooms but not long term rental property. As we have seen in the past in Dubai and we continue to see today, supply is always ahead of demand and the lack of transparency in pricing give some false impression of a buoyant property market, whether for rental or investment. Renting is probably the safest option. There seems to be a difference between LLs. My take would be to rent from a local rather than an investor, but I am sure there are good and bad LLs everywhere.

So sorry to hear about your ordeal. It might be a good idea to see a specialist, for two reasons. The first one is he/she will be able to hear from your daughter what it is all about while your daughter may just be worried about telling you (feeling silly or just worried, kids are like this) and talking to someone else may be easier. The second reason is the specialist can help your daughter dealing with the anxiety which may not be this bad and put your mind at rest. My DS saw Amy Bailey at Kids First (Child Psychologist) a couple years ago and she was really nice. Their number is +971 4 348 5437. It may be worth going there directly and making an appointment. They are on Al Wasl road near the Umm Suqeim Road junction (D63). Good luck and I hope it all gets better.

Well said SueB. There are a lot of irresponsible owners around having no second thoughts about abandonning their pets when they leave Dubai. The DM also needs to have a more proactive approach to TNR and responsible "culling". Sorry about having to use this word but some parts of Dubai (Deira I used to live in) have an enormous sick cat population which needs attending too. A lot of people think that cats will survive despite the heat. Kittens, sick and injured cats will not for sure. A few lucky ones will and yet they are condemned to a miserable existence until they are either run over by a car or poisonned or injured while involved in fights with other cats. If they were not any cats having to live rough in the streets of Dubai, people would not be abandonning their own pets like they do here on such a massive scale. Education starts at the government level. Just my two cents.

No time to get bored in Dubai for me. No time for brunches either, in fact I only did one in 6 1/2 years at the Organic Cafe (very nice btw) when it cost 95dhs and we got buy one get one free !. Outdoor life for me, even in the summer. It does not cost much. Food and drink. I do not go out unless I can get a nice big discount if it is in a 5* hotel and hubby wants to have a drink otherwise there plenty nice places without a licence. Plenty of freebies around if one bothers to look around. That said accomodation and bills can be expensive I agree. I do miss the pubs in the UK so I am always happy to go back for a couple weeks in the summer and have the freshest fish and chips you can get. Life in the UK in not that cheap even outside London and for us there is nowhere to go but to a B & B or cheap hotel as there is no family left. The cultural stuff is quite good and museums are free so we make most of it when we pass through London. And of course China Town is still cheap and good !

You could contact K12 Academy in Knowledge Village +971-4440-1212 (US curriculum school). They have a great team of ESL teachers and are possibly looking for more as they are expanding. I can highly recommend them as my DS is there. Another place is Eton Institute in Knowledge Village too. They are a language school. I do not have personal experience.

An online UAE based website may not offer you the best protection in case something goes wrong unless you know them by reputation or they offer paypal payment. I use a UAE based petfood online website that has an excellent reputation and offer paypal, the two things which matter to me.

The receipt would have to state why the deposit is refundable like subject to survey or bank loan. If nothing is mentioned it will be difficult to get the money back. In any case if the car has been involved in 2 major accidents (or any for that matter) it is best to inform the police so they can find out whether it was a definite write off (as must be scrapped). It will not give your money back but may save a life.

You need to go to the coastguard with the boat. The transponder is unscrewed then screwed back on immediately for the new owner. Refunds of deposit occur within 3 to 4 weeks after the paperwork has been done. edited by fjcruiser on 24/03/2015

I like Jacky's for its good customer service. Always check where your appliances are made. Some outlet may show a lower price but the same branded appliance may be made in a cheaper country (ex Siemens made in Turkey vs Siemens made in Germany).

I used to have a Jag and got a few engine, starter, suspension (you name it ) problems after 2 years of owning it second hand. AAA used to service and fix the car except when the real problems started. They (very reluctantly ) sent me back to the dealer. Not only it took weeks to fix the car but it was extremely expensive. They had to enroll Jag UK to determine what was going wrong. Needless to say as soon as the car got repaired it had to go. Jag are a money pit in Dubai. No independent Jag dealers. I learnt my lesson. Good luck.....

Go on the Audi US or UK forums and ask for advice. It is amazing how much info and help you will get then tell Audi here about your findings. I did just this when I had countless issues with an old Jag. Good luck. Electronic faults are a pain to solve but can be solved.

If you follow a recognised KHDA home schooling program like K12 Academy (www.k12.com), your child may be able to go back to mainstream school. A friend of mine had 2 boys tutored at K12 two years ago and they integrated UAS without any problems. In fact they were quite ahead as the K12 curriculum is quite pushy. You could also ask the question on the Emirate Homeschooling website. Some parents do not use the K12 curriculum but make their own. They may know of some parents who successfully re-integrated mainstream schools in the UAE. It involves more paperwork but it is not impossible I think.

You should speak to the finance company as they technically own the car. You will not be able to sell the car without their authorisation. They may charge you penalties for reedeming the loan early. Best to speak to them first. They will be able to tell you about the process. Should you have to take out a personal loan (if the value of the car is less than the outstanding loan for eg), you may have issues when you try to leave Dubai as you will not be able to keep a current account just a savings account when you become non resident.Best will be to be clear about the issue with your bank at this time and arrange to carry on paying the personal loan (if you need one) from the UK. It will depend on your bank really. Good luck. edited by fjcruiser on 13/09/2014

FJ Cruiser/ Prado and Fortuner have the same 6 cylinder 4.0L engine (as previously mentioned the Fortuner also has the 2.7L engine- avoid) and all 3 are great in the desert and on the road. In order of price the Prado is the most expensive and the Fortuner is the least expensive. Try all 3 as you may find comfort and finish are important to you especially if you drive a lot on the road.
