16 Films to Look Forward to in 2017

It’s a new year, leaving room for new starts for many… Including the cinema. While 2016 may have brought us the likes of Deadpool, Finding Dory, Suicide Squad, and a very questionable Batman vs. Superman, it appears 2017 is due to top that with even bigger movies that you MUST see.

For the sci-fi, superhero and war fans out there, you’re in for a fantastic 2017 at the cinema. Plus, there’s some family favourites due to grace our screens that we’re sure the whole family will enjoy.

We’re particularly looking forward to Disney’s remake of the classic tale of Beauty and the Beast (who isn’t?), plus the next episode in the Star Wars saga.

So here’s our pick of the must-see blockbusters we’re looking forward to in 2017!

The LEGO Batman Movie

If you’re a mum with kiddies who love all things LEGO, or you’re a huge fan yourself, we’re sure this fun-filled, action-packed LEGO movie starring everyone’s beloved Batman will be a great watch to enjoy. Due to be released in February.

Beauty and the Beast

Following the huge successes of the Cinderella live-action remake and retelling of Maleficent’s story, Disney are re-creating one of their own favourite classics once again into a live-action blockbuster all ages can enjoy. Emma Watson is Belle, cast alongside Dan Stevens as Beast… And so far we’ve been truly impressed with what we’ve seen. Who knew Watson could sing! Enjoy the film after its release in March.

Power Rangers

We’re sure any adult who grew up in the Power Rangers world will feel a slight twinge of excitement at the news that their 5 favourite alien-fighting, costume-donning characters. Destiny gets in the way in this one, as the gang protect Earth from invasion. Elizabeth Banks joins the cast, too. Released in March.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Set to the all-new sonic backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, the sequel continues the team’s adventures as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage. No doubt it’ll be packed with action-packed scenes, fantastic imagery and lots of laughs along the way. Released in May.

Lion

The film follows the unbearably moving – and true-life – tale of Saroo, an Indian boy who was accidentally separated from his mother and brother at the age of five, before being adopted by an Australian couple. As an adult (Dev Patel), he embarks upon a journey to trace and reunite with his biological family. Nicole Kidman stars also as Saroo’s loving, adoptive mother. Onscreen in January.

Star Wars VIII

Perhaps the most exciting release of 2017 for sci-fi lovers and fans of the Star Wars franchise. It’s the second in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, featuring John Boyega, Daisy Ridley and everyone else who helped make the 2015 Star Wars: The Force Awakens a monumental success. Expect to see the late Carrie Fisher in it, too. The story will begin where the last film ended… After the nail-biting reveal of Luke Skywalker on the top of the hill. Out in December… And we can’t wait!

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword
While it’s a story many of us may be familiar with, this revival of the classic Excalibur myth of King Arthur will no doubt be a treat with a cast of Charlie Hunnam (Arthur) and Jude Law (his uncle). Due to be released in May.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

We know what you’re thinking, but no… There can never be too many POTC films to enjoy! Johnny Depp returns as Captain Jack Sparrow, with Geoffrey Rush returning as Barbossa and Orlando Bloom as Will Turner. In this terrifying new adventure, you’ll no doubt enjoy watching POTC favourites battling against deadly ghost pirates, old nemesis’ and more. Released in May.

Blade Runner 2049

Due to be released in October, the film is set over thirty years after the Ridley Scott original. In this new flick, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. Harrison Ford will also be returning, although Gosling will no doubt be doing most of the running and jumping.

Cars 3

This is one the whole family will be able to enjoy, as Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) returns to our screens in the third Cars film. Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician with her own plan to win, inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet, and a few unexpected turns. Released in June.

Spiderman: Homecoming

With a new Peter Parker behind the mask, fans of the superhero will have already had a taste of the young and energetic Tom Holland as Spidey in Captain America: Civil War in 2016. Now, he’s returning to the screen in his own blockbuster, which will follow on from his alliance with Iron Man and the gang. Parker will navigate his newfound identity under the watchful eye of Aunt May and his mentor, Tony Stark.  Despite attempts to fall back into his normal daily routine, he’s faced with the Vulture (Michael Keaton), who will threaten everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened. To be released in July.

Coco

The Mexican festival Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, has inspired plenty of film-makers over the years. Now, Pixar are following with its animation about a young Mexican boy who, during the festival, finds himself in the realm of the departed. Out in November.

Dunkirk

This hugely anticipated film, directed by Christopher Nolan, will bring to screens the World War II story of the extraordinary mass evacuation of Allied soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk in 1940. With a fantastic British-led cast, including Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance and Kenneth Branagh – and even One Direction’s Harry Styles in his acting debut – we’re sure it will be one of the top releases of 2017. Due to be onscreen in July.

Kong: Skull Island

Yet another version of the 1932 tale of King Kong, first written by Daily Mail war correspondent Edgar Wallace, Kong: Skull Island will hopefully breathe new life into this already familiar tale. The cast includes Tom Hiddleston as the leader of a team of explorers who stumble upon cinema’s hairiest icon. Alongside him is Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman and Brie Larson. Released in March.

Paddington 2

There’s no denying the first Paddington film was a joy to watch, and this sequel will reunite cast and crew with Ben Whishaw again as the voice of the marmalade-loving Peruvian bear. Out in November.

Wonder Woman

Finally, Gal Gadot has the chance to play the Amazonian princess as more than just an extended cameo in another Marvel film. In between all of the other superhero films we’ve endured, at one point it seemed Wonder Woman would never have a moment. Alas, with Gadot in the role – who has been endorsed by none other than Lynda Carter herself, who was the original role on TV in the 70s – we’re excited to witness Wonder Woman have the spotlight entirely.
