Metro Stations Around the World

Whether you call it the metro, the underground or the tube, a rapid transport system is something that you will encounter when visiting a highly populated city. These transit systems are made so that they can transport a large number of people over a great distance without interrupting the regular traffic flow. If fact these systems are almost always built on raised platforms or underground so that they cause no interference at all. Avtovo Station, St. Petersberg

The Russians have some beautiful architechture that has survived Stalin and communism - this metro station pays homage to that great architechture. This station is on the Kirovsko-Vyborgskaya Line of the Saint Petersburg Metro. It opened as part of the first metro in 1955 featuring highly ornate designs including columns with ornamental glass manufactured at the Lomonosov factory.

Canary Wharf Station, London, England

Canary Wharf is one of London's two main financial centres and is known for its super high rise buildings. This is a known business district and will see many suits and smartly attired people pass through the metro on their daily commute to work. This tube station was opened in 1999 by Ken Livingstone as part of the Jubilee line extension. It is clean, modern and structured and represents the kind of people that most frequent it. The station is directly connected to the mall that has many traditional and fast food outlets perfect for a quick bite, or a leisurely business lunch.

Khalid Bin Al Waleed Station, Dubai

Dubai is the mecca of modern architecture, and it comes as no surprise that this metro, also called the BurJuman station is impeccibly designed. This sleek, modern looking metro is located in one of the oldest areas of Dubai making it stand out as it is juxtaposed with the older buildings in the area.

Grand Central Station, New York

Grand Central Station is not only a train station, it is also the set of many a television series and film. Remember Gossip Girl and Arthur? It is located at 42nd Street and Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan in New York City, United States. The station serves commuters from the outlying suburbs who come into the city to work every day. It is also one of the most beautiful train stations.

Kungsträdgården, Sweden

Located near the 'king's garden' - a park in Sweden, this metro station was opened in 1977 and has an interesting design. The station is 34m in length and features relics rescued from the many buildings pulled down during the redevelopment of central Stockholm during the 1950s and 1960s throughout the station.

Heidelberger Platz, Berlin

The station serves both the S-Bahn and the U-Bahn in the Wilmersdorf district of Berlin, Germany. Berlin is known for it's artists and you can get a glimpse of the art scene by skipping the galleries and going underground. This is one of the most brightly decorated station on the network.

Champ de Mars, Montreal

The Metro is the main for of public transport in Montreal, Canada. The Champ de Mars station runs on the orange line and is made distincively beautiful by it's stained glass windows by noted Quebec artist Marcelle Ferron.

Pyongyang Metro, North Korea

This North Korean metro system consists of two lines: the Chŏllima line and the Hyŏksin line. There are very few photographs of North Korea, but we were surprised to see at how bright and colourful the station looks. Definitely a top one.

Expo MTR Singapore

In Singapore the metro is called the MRT (mass rapid transport) and the expo MRT is one of the most interesting designs we've come across. It sports a space age architecture designed by world renowned architect Sir Norman Foster. The roof is clad in titanium, steel, and glass, and its design enabled the platform to be columns-free and invoking a sense of spaciousness.

Toledo Station, Naples

Italy is known for its art and it has produced some greats in the past, even the metro stations in Naples are designed with art in mind. We picked the Toledo Station in Naples because it transports you to another world. When they were designed, speecial attention was paid to making these stations, functional and comfortable and they are known as the Art Stations of Naples.
