need some tourist advice ladies... i'll be accompanying my husband on a business trip to south Africa... while he takes care of business for a couple of days I'll need to entertain the kids on my own... and once he's free from work he'll be able to join us and hopefully we can squeeze in three days of full family time...

I've never been to Cape Town before... and I know it's winter there in July (we're going away the eid week)... any advice on what our itinerary should look like?

we arrive there by noon on Friday, 25th Jul and will be there till Wed, 30th Jul... our kids are 7 and 2 (both girls)... so please give in your suggestions on what we should get around to doing while we're there... I heard they have a lovely aquarium there... and some lovely
vineyards we could visit... again not sure how much of it is feasible given the weather!

we will be staying at the Cape Royale Hotel in Greenpoint

thank you all for the wonderful suggestions... so now looks like our Cape itinerary is all sorted... now just need to figure out what to do while we're in Joberg... at the moment the toughest decision is trying to figure out which safari park would be better for our kids to attend... Kruger or Pilanesberg...

Another great one for the kids if you can get there would be the huge colony of little penguins at Boulders BAy, SImonstown. It's not that far away from Cape Town if I remember correctly, and you can get really close to them. yes its called boulders bay and simonstown.... brilliant place we hired a house just across from the beach and went to talk and walk with the penguins.

You will love it - we stayed at the Cape Royale last year. I would recommend the hop on hop off bus tour, you can buy a ticket that lasts two days and there are different routes. You can see most of the sites this way, including table mountain. And if I remember correctly the ticket also includes the boat trip to Robben Island. Aside from this, the aquarium is great and Boulders beach is a must it is simply beautiful there. You will find plenty to keep you all occupied.

The cable car is a great experience, and if you go up table mountain, there are lots of hamster like creatures running around (cant for the life of me remember what they are called!) that the kids might enjoy seeing. They are locally known as Dassie's - Rock hyrax (dassie)

Oh so jealous! Would love to go. I would relaly recommend Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens - amazing - http://www.sanbi.org/gardens/kirstenbosch Also the cable car to Table Mountain Walking around the V&A waterfront :) thanks... we're real excited about the trip as it will be our first trip to Africa! would each of these activities take a whole day? we're looking to fill 5 days of activities Ermm I am not 100% sure, I know the Gardens are a day activity and will take a few hours. Simonstown is also brilliant, for collecting precious stones - http://www.scratchpatch.co.za/

We went to Cape Town on our own pre-DD, loved it and always thought it would be fab for kids! There is loads going on at the waterfront aside from shops and restaurants (and isn't the aquarium there too?), like street entertainers - the groups of singers from the townships are really good - and you can show your kids the seals in the water or basking in the sun below too.
