Advice please?
We are moving to QLD in about 18 months so plenty of time to decide, but need an idea on which areas to buy in. DH will work in central Brisbane and wants to avoid public transport due hours or a long commute. I would like as green and country and hilly and quiet as possible, or something facing natural bush or lake etc... ( ;) not asking much, am I ;)). We want to settle as quickly as possible so would like an area where there are good schools - elementary, middle and high. We prefer newer houses, but have heard that the new areas like North lakes are no go areas. Middle of range budget. Where would I start looking? There seems to be so many suburbs and I have no idea of the traffic or which areas to avoid. Would anyone live out on one of the islands; is it an option? I have read the old posts on here, but would like some current input please! :) Also, would you recommend buying now, or waiting until we move down? Thanks

You could try the salvos or lifeline! Thats about the best I can think of. Thanks - yes the salvation army said they would take everything and just found a form online to request. I would definitely say the Salvos, also. They can sell things in their op shops and the money goes where it needs to for relief. thanks - have filled in the online form and will wait to hear. Now i just need to bring back a small amount of personal items that would be a bit to much for excess luggage - pictures/clothes/shoes - any suggestions for freight?

Sorry to change the theme but wonder if anyone has any good idea's of where I can donate some furniture and household stuff to in Brisbane CBD? I need to clear the contents of a 1 bed apartment (all in good condition but I don't have the time or inclination to sell) normal stuff - bed sofa telly kitchen stuff washing machine etc. I would love to let a struggling family or battered wives hostel take it all? Any suggestions?

Thanks for these ideas; keep them coming :) Basil, it's not the first time I have heard of shopping by post code ;) Will definitely look into these areas. Are any of these close to horse riding stables?

OK ..maybe I'm a little bias but you need to live in 4069 postcode! Kenmore,Pullenvale,Brookfield ,Indooroopilly St Lucia, Taringa area. So many private schools and the State schools are the best in the State. Shopping centers galore, trees ,parks ,university and too far from centre of city. Toowong is closer so trains, bike ways but older houses. Professionals live in this area so you can rest assure better neighbours. But then that's my opinion!

why not try looking at Hawthorne / Morningside area. Other side of the river to Ascot but easy commute and some lovely properties. Also little bit further out but a bit more rural and hilly is Kenmore and Fig Tree Pocket, which are lovely no direct train links as with Hawthorne but not a bad commute drive.

Samford is very nice, I have a friend who lives there and happily commutes into the city. Mitchelton State Primary school has a very good reputation but you may have to put your name down now for the good schools. The private schooling in Brisbane is very affordable especially the Catholic schools (they have their own website) and you dont have to be catholic to apply although it will put you at top of list. Most private schools will let you apply now but that depends on your budget as to whether you go that route. I've just spent 8 years there and lived in Ormiston, near Cleveland around 30 mins east of the city by the water and there are some good schools in that area too as well as easy trek to Stradbroke Island to see whales migrating and dolphins playing. I would suggest you rent for first 6 months and see where life takes you but there are plenty of websites regarding info on schools and real estate dot com dot au on property purchasing or rentals

Thanks Amy, yeah I know - reach for the stars, right? ;) I don't expect to have it all but after hearing all the wonderful things about Brisbane (never been) thought it may be possible :) Thanks, will look at Ascot - any other suggestions? ETA DH will do 45 min in traffic if that gives a better idea - not sure what radius this will allow edited by Aryanwynn on 17/10/2012
