hi ladies... we're planning a big family trip with our kids and our parents as well (in their 60s) to Italy for the easter break in April... probably from 4th till 18th

We've never been to Italy before so would appreciate anyone who's been sharing their itinerary... what's the best place to fly in an out of? what cities should we not miss? what tours are best? tour operators? etc...

and anything particularly interesting to do for the kids? other than eating loads of gelato of course... our DDs are 7 and 2

Dear HorizonMum2, Hi, I am Italian, from Milan. First of all, seen the season, April, I would concentrate in the center and south of Italy. All the north and Milan included can Be very wet and rainy, maybe not but better avoid. In my opinion, better to see the main cities of center Italy, Rome above all, Florence, Pisa, then south to Sorrento, Capri, Pompei. The only north option I would consider is Venice. I think Milan is worth only if you have already seen the rest and if your main interest is shopping (at crazy prices). As for restaurants, please as Somebody else told you, please, try to avoid touristic restaurants. The cities centers also have "normal" restaurants with our real great food, not the touristic one, bolognese or whatever! Not many know that the south of Italy is amazing, Puglia, Sicily (full of culture, history, archeology) Sardinia (isle) above all. If you need further advice I can give you my email address, let me know! Hi ItalyMum... thank you so much for the detailed explanation... would love for you to share your views... you can email me on horizonmum2 at gmail dot com... I've been in love with Puglia for the last six months... you'll never believe where I've seen it... hehehehe on Bold & The Beautiful (daytime soap) one of the young couple gets married there and they were airing the sights and sounds of Puglia for almost three months!! GORGEOUSSS... so will definitely look at this... we will probably do as you suggested and limit ourselves to central and south Italy, Rome, Florence, Pisa, then south to Sorrento, Capri, Pompei. Looking forward to your email... one of the challenges I have is to find somewhere appropriate to stay... travelling with us are our parents and also our children... so we're a group of 5 adults and 2 children... ideally I'd like to find a 2 bedroom apartment or so to stay in each of those cities... or a cheap B&B

I am currently in the middle of looking at this for our family this summer and have been talking to these people who have been very good at getting back to me with all my questions www.tours-italy.com. Even if you don't want to book with them they have plenty of itineraries to give you ideas. HTH

Pompei is amazing we spent two very full days there, it's just so big. If you want to see something similar try Herculaneum, just as interesting but much more manageable. is there enough to do for the children at Pompeii? I'm concerned on how to keep two young kids entertained during our trip Little ones may get a bit bored with Pompei, which is why Herculaneum is better if the adults really want to see something like that. Also once you're out in the middle of Pompei it can be a long trek back to the entrance and if the weather is lovely (which I hope it will be) there is little to no shade. Herculaneum, you can find plenty of shade and it's nowhere near as big. One tip we were given regarding the price of food, was to find the restaurants the locals used, great food and very reasonable, something we've always stuck to wherever we go on holiday now. In Rome in the middle of the tourist area we just walked down what looked like a very dingy back lane and found the most amazing pizza and pasta place and got the last table :)

What a shame, it was really a great holiday for us and I suffer from motion sickness. The rooms were lovely, it was nice dressing up on the formal nights, having a drink from the back of the ship as you left port. Most ships have fantastic kids clubs as well. Actually the rooms were more spacious than the ones we had on our first trip to Rome and cheaper. Enjoy your trip, Italy is just gorgeous, definitely look at doing Pompeii, it is absolutely worth the effort and there are some tours that run from Rome.

Why dont you look at a cruise, there are some decent deals on at the moment. DH and I have just done one that started in Rome, finished in Venice, did Pompeii, Sorrento and then we did a leg through the Greek Isle. Whilst you only have one day in port you can organise your own tours, you only have to unpack once and you wake up in a new city each day. If not, Venice is a must, its beautiful and Pompeii is amazing. thanks for the cruise idea LittleOne... unfortunately my DH's parents are a bit fussy and wouldn't be able to deal with sleeping onboard a ship... they will come up with all sorts of drama related to sea sickness, etc... better to be on land...

Done Naples, Sorrento and Rome all lovely, just beware Rome at Easter, it will be packed with pilgrims. Also been to Capri which makes a lovely oasis in the middle of a full and busy holiday :)
