Hi there, we lived in Houston 2 years ago for 4 years and my children went to the British school as i wanted to keep them in the British Education system. The school is in quite a poor part of town, so there were few families who live there most choosing to live in three gated communities, within a 20 min commute, Lakes on Eldridge, Lakes on Eldridge North and Twin Lakes. the kids got a good education at the school and loved it, however compared with the American schools there are very few facilities at the school. It has grown in size recently - when we left it only had 530 kids from age 3-18 , now it is around 800. We loved living in the community we did- it was very British and easy to make friends and also easy for playdates and car pooling. The school was very friendly to and most of our social life was through it too. Houston is a very easy place to live with fab shopping. Hope you have fun there

Thanks everyone for the advice... Seems like I'm only hearing good things, which is very reassuring :) Having never been there, its really hard to picture what its like in terms of commuting etc. So I think we are planning on taking a trip there before we leave for good (end June). Heard so much about Katy, Cinco Ranch, Woodlands ... it will be nice to put a face to the name. Hopefully then we can narrow it down and settle on a school. Charley - am VERY happy to share information. We are due to leave end of June. How about you?

Reposting my earlier reply... I LOVE Houston and lived there for over 10 years. The cost of living is very, very low so you should be able to get a lot more for your money (although, you will probably pay taxes there vs. here in Dubai). Houston has many great places to live - oil and gas people are everywhere since that comprises the vast majority of the economy. It will depend on your budget and what is important to you. If you want excellent schools, you will have to live in the area zoned to the school to gain admittance. For example: *Katy and Woodlands - I would consider these FAR-OUT suburbs. That is, you can expect commutes of over 45 min without traffic if you are heading downtown. You will get a giant house and have easy access to schools, shops, etc. by car. Safe, nice neighborhoods. Another equivalent suburb is Sugarland... also Fall Creek. *West University, University Place, River Oaks, Southhampton - these are close-in suburbs. They are older, more expensive neighborhoods with excellent schools. Also close to shops, etc. they are near the zoo, Rice University and the museum district as well. I know there are several school with IB accreditation. Our old neighborhood, University Place, had Roberts Elementary School which was excellent. I loved these areas - tons of Live Oak trees and Southern charm. *Downtown - Houston has a revived downtown residential section with nice high rises, etc. Not sure of the school zoning there. If you are doing private school, the best 2 in Houston are Kincaid and St. John. You will likely have trouble getting in, but just in case your company can pull strings.... I am not familiar with the British schools there. Happy to answer more specific questions, if it is helpful.

I, too, am moving to Houston this summer as a result of my husband's transfer. I've heard that the Woodlands is where most oil & gas people live and it's a relatively easy commute to downtown. I think it's a newer area than Katy but having never been there, can't confirm. I'm happy to know the cost of living is cheaper than Dubai and I've heard there is great variety in products that you don't necessarily find here in the UAE. I think we'll rent a house for a year to determine where we want to live before purchasing. I'd really appreciate it if we could share information - when do you leave?

Hi again I don't know anyone in Houston so my research so far is based solely on what I've read on the web. Katy and Cinco Ranch are names that come up frequently, so I'm guessing that's a good place to start. My husband's office will be in the Downtown area. I have read that commuting can be issue? - Does anyone know how easy it is to commute from Downtown to Katy/Cinco Ranch district ? - Are there many expats around? I'm nervous about my son (7) starting school and being the only new face. But if there are a lot of expats around then he shouldn't be the only new guy around. - Are there any British schools that anyone can recommend ? I have only heard about the British School of Houston. It looks fantastic but its huge and, coming from a relatively small school right now, I think he would just feel lost ? That's all I can think of for now. As always, any advice is much appreciated x

Congratulations! I'm from the Houston area (majority of my life anyway). The Katy Independent School District is excellent - especially the schools in Cinco Ranch, Grand Parkway area. I hope you like it - if I were to be transferred back to Houston with a decent salary I would jump on it, but my work is here now. Good luck to you - if you have any specific questions I'll try to help!

A good place to live in as its cheap, plenty of shopping and eating opportunities. There is a permanent Dallas vs Houston battle, and while people might be slightly friendlier in Dallas, Houston has a more global feel to it The summers are also more humid but nothing bad if you have survived Dubai Austin and San Antonio are 3 hrs and Dallas is 5 hrs . Nowhere is Texas is terribly exciting and does not have mountains you can drive to in a day trip. But it is a good and stable place to live in
