We're moving to Houston soon. Would appreciate recommendations on good private schools and residential areas.

So grateful for all the advice. DH will be working downtown. It is a commute, but would rather that we live near schools. We're looking at international schools or British curriculum schools to make transition easier when we get back to Dubai after DH assignment. Been told that the children may be put a year back if coming back from an American system. Any views?

It will be an easy transition from Dubai to Houston - both flat, spread out and a bit hot! We loved Houston and the living is easy and cheap. As previous posters have said, depending on where you live, the public schools are EXCELLENT. IF you can afford it ... some of these areas include: West University (close-in suburb), River Oaks (close-in suburb), Bellaire and Memorial. Not sure where the job is but many of the further out suburbs are nice as well. The two best private schools are St. Johns and Kincaid but your chances of admittance are very very slim as waiting lists start while children are in the womb. edited by HotRice on 09/09/2013

This website has a lot of good information for researching school districts and particular schools within a district: [url=http://www.greatschools.org/texas/'>link[/url'> With most American public schools you are assigned a school within that district based on your address, so having a narrow list of schools you're interested in (either in terms of the particular district or specific schools from within that district) can really help narrow down the housing search.

Houston is massive and the schools vary a lot. It depends on the county you are going to live in, but I can say that most of the private schools in Harris County are the same standard as public. The further north seems to be a better standard.

Public schools in most American suburbs are as good or better than private schools. The major exception would be if you'd prefer religious schools in which case you're paying for the religious education and not the academics. (Some religious schools are good for academics while others leave something to be desired.) But, if you can pick your preferred community to live in, there are very few good reasons to spend money on private school in the US.

Are you moving for work? If so, that would be a starting point. There's not a lot of point people recommending living in Sugar Land if work is in The Woodlands, for example.
