Portland, OR is where the food truck craze started and is a cool city. An ideal trip would start in Seattle, WA and with a day trip to the San Juan Islands to see the Orcas, drive to Portland and down the coast of Oregon (must, must, must stop at Cannon Beach for a night) to northern CA. Stick to US 1 for the spectacular scenery, hit San Fran, Pebble Beach etc and go as far south as Big Sur. Dogntow is right--Cannon beach is pretty spectacular!!!

Seattle is FABULOUS for food--amazing quality, really inventive and an emphasis on local produce. It's a fun compact city and easy to navigate and there is lots of fun and funky shopping! You could check out the neighborhoods of Ballard and Fremont; take ferries to Orcas Island or San Juan-there is so much to do! Portland is ok (it definitely has some fun amenities but I'm not keen on it and if you have only 2.5 weeks, I would spend the rest of in CA!). As for CA, San Francisco is wonderful and definitely go to Alcatraz. If you rent a car, Muir Woods is worth the short drive. We LOVE Monterey, too. Laid-back and gorgeous with a pretty great aquarium (which even grown-ups like:) SoCal: Ahh... where do I begin! Universal Studios is so awesome and fantastic for the kids and adults of all ages (I think my hubby enjoyed more than any of us!). LA also has some fun neighborhoods as well depending on your interests. There's Santa Monica, Venice Beach (if that's your thing), Newport Beach is very nice. San Diego is fun too and has a great downtown urban center with some of the most fabulous Mexican food. Sounds like a wonderful trip--you WILL have a great time!

Tour the major cities? From north to south: Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, LA, side trip to La Jolla, San Diego. All of these cities have quirky boutique and vintage shopping; some have famous food truck areas (I know LA has a dedicated food truck lot).

With husband, 10 year old and 17 year old. Planning about 2 1/2 weeks. What should we not miss out? They are not really into museum but boutique shopping, food truck areas etc.
