Any idea if there are day camps/play schemes for older kids during the summer break. My children will join me in Abu Dhabi in July, but the new school term doesn't begin until September. Seeing this post just made me realise that leaves them potentially home alone for about a month and half. Ooopsies. Even though the oldest is 11, it'd be a tad cruel to drag them all the way to UAE then leave them home alone. Ta.

If these results were true, then selective or not, it would be an amazing achievement! Even the selective public schools in London don't get results like that! However I was most impressed with BSAK's results, approx half of their GCSEs were A/A*, and they're not selective. I think in a way all the schools out there are selective inasmuch as if a family uproots to move there, they must be reasonably hard working. And a family's attitude towards effort is crucial. The school can only do so much. I think I may have missed the boat on BC this year anyway. My older lad will go on the waiting list once he has sat their exam (assuming he passes). However the waiting list for year 2 has now closed, so they're even going as far as refunding her application fee! So I guess that's a no! BusyBee, sorry to be a pain, but if we lived off island, do you think the kids could still attend BSAK? I can see on the map that it's not far, but I've also experienced Abu Dhabi traffic during a brief visit. And are there even busses running from KCA/MBZCITY ? Thanks a mil!

Nooooo, I hadn't heard that there was nothing for teens to do. I hope my older lad doesn't see this, he's already less than thrilled about the imminent move. Although all he does in the UK is hang out at home or a friend's house and play computer games. They sometimes go outside to kick a ball about but not often! Anyone (BusyBee you've been there long enough!) know when the dust settles on this school lark? Ie do all schools communicate their place allocations on a set day, then see who hasn't gotten a place, and which schools have space? JoJo7, all the best with your husband's job offer; mine came through last week so now it's all systems go go go!

JoJo, we applied to BC, but sadly after all my dithering they've now closed applications for year 2. Arghhh! As you already noticed, the older years are easier to get in though, subject to their tests. The entrance test, your lad should be fine if he's done the UK system for 11+ and the public school entrance/scholarship tests. It looks very similar. The poor kids are already reacting badly to the move, "I'm not going to live in a desert" so the least I can do is find em a school they'll enjoy. But as far as the older lad goes, wherever we go it shouldn't interfere too much with his life -if there's electricity, there's an X box opportunity. Where else have you applied?

Thanks heaps ladies, I really appreciate your advice. Yes, I was surprised at how expensive BISAD is, actually more than BC! We're looking for a good all round school, but academics are important, especially given that my lad has almost finished the year 7 curriculum, so he'd just be repeating a year and becoming complacent if not pushed! I think my kids were hoping for a respite from pushy schools! [insert evil laugh here'> My friend is already over there so she asked a few mums for me and they have all reverted with very positive reports about BC. I reckon I'll just have to bite the bullet and get them on the waiting list ASAP (ie today)!
