Thanks ashleigh thats helpful, we do like them and I agree with you on the grotty bit, but once your in the villa area, its really nice. Why did you have to pay to put in a water tank - was it for irrigation? L. Yep for the garden. All the gardeners that came said we had to have it, and so we got it thinking it was a grey water tank, but it turned out to be through a DEWA pipe.... anyway we love it here and are very happy so would definitely recommend it!

Hi Lynne, Recently moved to DSO Cedre Villas and love living here! it is really peaceful and far less hectic than the springs which is where we were before. The houses are far nicer and better built, and I'm renting through DSO and they've been pretty good to deal with. So far any time we contact them to fix things they are here within an hour or so. We have spinneys right near us, actually walking distance from our villa which is really handy, and the pool is lovely. We're in phase 2 so theres no park here, but we can pop over to the phase one park which is really nice. There's been some other threads about this area so if you do a search for silicon oasis you will see some other opinions too, but most are positive. I like being a 15-20 min drive to all major areas of Dubai, I like the peace and quiet, I like the fact neighbors are friendly, I like the spinneys so close by, the lack of heavy traffic and the spacious and well built villas. I guess a negative would be having to drive through all the rest of DSO to get to the villas as its a bit grotty, but it doesn't really bother me, and a negative was that we had to get a water tank put into our garden as apparently thats compulsory and it cost us 2800AED. Also, if you rent through DSO and are planning to plant trees then expect to forfeit your deposit as you have to remove all plants in order to get your deposit back when you move, strange rule if you ask me but just so you know. Oh and the parking garage is a bit tight for 2 4x4.

Don't go. Really... don't go!!! :) I second this comment. Find somewhere else... In fact I had a good experience with Sisters in Dubai Mall, an ozzie girl did my extensions and they were amazing, but this was a year or so ago. My only advice would be if you really just want extensions for events then get clip in ones, so much less hassle. I loved my extensions but it took a lot of time to maintain them :)

Thanks so much Ashleigh. I guess I need to visit some villas to get a feel what it is out there. no probs :) I suggest you go to the DSO office and ask to see the show homes, even if you don't rent directly through them, it beats going into empty hot villas when you can get an idea for the floor plan and flow in the cool AC with some furnishings :)

Just done the move, the villas are lovely, spinneys is in walking distance, 15 mins from Dxb mall, 15 mins from MCC, 25 mins from MOE. Am really pleased I've moved here and would recommend it especially since so much of your life is moving this way. Really nice place to live and LOVE how quiet it is, neighbors are friendly too :) Finishings of the villas here are fare nicer than the springs/meadows too.

Sorry I had put a post on here early saying that you cannot be banned which is NOT correct. I have had it confirmed that you can be banned for absconding if you haven't cancelled your visa correctly. You cannot be stopped from being hired from another school if you've quit , but you can have a visa ban put on you and if you abscond and try to enter the country again, they can detain you and if any money is owed you'd have to pay it back. Don't think this applies to other gulf countries though Sorry for putting the wrong info earlier.

Hello! Greetings to you all in sunny, warm Dubai from Melbourne where it is currently 14 sunny degs! I'd be ever so grateful for any info that can be shared regarding the Higher Colleges of Technology Dubai and Abu Dhabi (HCT colleges are located in other Emirates too). My sister is considering an approach she's received and I was no help, having never heard of them during our time in DXB. Limited info is available on the net especially re numbers of students etc etc. Thank you in advance. :) sorry just saw your student numbers q, there's about 15-20 thousand across the country, and the woman's colleges are the biggest. Dxb womans is the largest, then ad womans, then Shj womans.

Hi There, I know quite a few people who work for the HCT. It has its ups and downs just like any company, and agree each individual college has its own environment, but its a large government organization, you get paid exactly what they say they'll pay you, you get paid on time, you get given pretty secure contracts and there is an average retention rate of faculty of 8 years. Of course it's not for everyone and you'll hear lots of individuals who bi**h and complain but on a whole basis its a good place to work and you earn decent money with a secure job. If your sister is trying to find out if its a trustworthy employer and a safe place to work, then I would say a definite yes, the rest is up to each individual experience. Oh and the holidays are good :) Its the largest federal educational institution in the country and its been around a long time (almost as long as the country). It has about 3000 teaching faculty employed so its not a tin pot little outfit. Its also true that you don't get to choose your location, but you can request a location which could then be granted. Also regarding the "bad reputations" management come and go, so if you're happy to keep your head down and do your job, you'll be fine pretty much anywhere

I haven't seen my contract yet but when I spoke to the guy at DSO regarding this he said yes we do have to if we want our deposit back, if we leave the garden then they keep the deposit DSO rule. I remember reading about this from Greenish hence why I checked with the DSO office. TBH though they've been a dream to deal with and I would much prefer to rent off them than many of the individual owners who have probably bought at very high prices and can't maintain their villas it has to be in your contract though to be enforced. True, but I don't know anyone who has been able to get their deposit back. Oh really?? none of it? I'm actually not that bothered so might just plant up my garden then and forfiet the deposit anyway :)

I don't think the garden thing is correct TBH, there is nothing in the contract that states that. Re pet rules, just things like you have to pick up after them and not have them off lead in the compounds. Common sense really, no reptiles or farm stock to be kept either! LOL Ah that should be OK then, thanks for letting me know :)

you cannot ban teachers here let alone from other gulf countries. Really? Well regardless, if you have a police file against you, you can still go to prison! Yes. There are certain professions that are immune to the banning system. Sorry haven't read all the responses so not sure what the police file is regarding. Not condoning it of course, each to their own and I personally wouldn't do it, but banning teachers doesn't happen.

Thanks Boomerang, I know of a few such as you need to remove the garden when moving out, but can you please let me know any others you know of? I haven't received my tenancy pack yet and I could still change my mind if the rules are too fussy eeek

For a western expat family with two children to have a comfortable existence in Dubai, a villa in Emirates Hills, Ranches or Umm Sequim/Jumeirah, you should have an overall package value of at least 600,000 AED a year, or 50,000 AED a month (not including any taxes you may need to pay in Australia). This should include the rent, transportation allowance, school fees and flight tickets home. On top of this add a one-time relocation expense of 50,000 AED. If your calculations can't come up to this, it's not worth it. edited by Tallybalt on 01/05/2011 School Fees x2= 80k-90k+ per year Rent: 200-250k you can find a nice 4/5 bedroom Phone Bills: 12'000-15'000 per year Electricity: 24'000 per year Housing fee: 10'000-12'500 per year Tickets: 34'000 per year economy for four So a total of 425'500 at the top end without your basic expenses (food, clothes, car etc) And then there is a once off payment of around 30'000-50'000 for relocation At 600'000 per year I don't think you'd be able to get an emirates hills house, since the absolute cheapest is like 450'000 per year. If you want to come out here and live more modestly, you can cut down on your rent by living in an area such as midriff where you can get a 4/5 bedroom for 120-150k without negotiating the price.

it also depends on what company you work for. My OH has been working in dubai real estate for over 5 years, he now owns a well known but small company and has new starters recently and they are all making fairly good money as he spends time training them. As long as the person is willing to work hard and has patience then they should do well. Hi Cakes, Thank you for this, he is really keen on real estate, and he already has somewhere to stay here whilst getting on his feet etc, how does it work here? Do companies sponsor their real estate agents still? Also what is a rough idea of what someone who is doing reasonably will earn? Do they have to pay for training etc, and also another friend told me to work in real estate here you'd have to be able to fund yourself for 6 months first, so do you only get paid on a 6 monthly basis? Also is your DH looking for any new staff? :) TIA

All I can tell you is that I had 5 friends who all worked in real estate - earnt great money and worked really hard. None of them are in real estate now - they said they had to work just as hard and their earnings fell like a stone. Not the best job to be in here as a new person.......those that are doing well are those who have been in real estate for a long time and can take the ups and the downs. Thanks Claire, Any other suggestions for employment here for a super sales person new to dubai?

Hi ladies, Good to see so many people doing so great on the Dunkan diet, keep it up! Question: Is there any thing on the book about taking your daily supplements (vitamins) while on the diet? I wish to continue taking them while on the diet but are they going to interfere with my results? I've also just placed an order but wondering if the current users can shed some light on this. TIA Yes, you can, and he also recommends you take vitamins.

Ladies, it is my 1st day on Dukan diet and I didnt find that Oat Bran!! I had one piece of 99% fat free turkey and one piece of 0% fat president slice cheese. I had black coffee with tropicana slim :( I have got skinless chicken and a piece of salmon, I still dont know which one to cook for lunch but I understand that it has to be without oil. I also got some LIGHT activia yoghurt drink but I didnt drink it, I am really afraid of consitpation. Can I have that yoghurt or light is not allowed? I also got weetabix, can I have it with skimmed milk instead of the oat bran? and if not, where exactly I can find that oat bran?? I was lost yesterday in choitrams and union coop and didnt know which one is the right one!! To the ladies who already passed this attack phase successfully, can you give me any tips??? My book didnt arrive yet!! edited by JS on 24/04/2011 Hi JS, my first tip/advice to you is to wait for the book. Trust me, I had the book and started without getting through the book at the very beginning, but you have to follow specific instructions, so make sure you read the book first, at the very least read each stage before starting it. If you need Oat Bran, I did find some in spinneys, but have heard the organics shop has some. You can't eat wheatbix, and I thought you weren't allowed cheese, but maybe you are allowed the 0% fat (someone else may be able to confirm, and if so i'll be buying some soon!!!)

6 pounds!!!! Sorry but that is not healthy weight loss - you put yourself at risk for things like gallstones and muscle wasting. Healthy weight loss is 1-2 pounds a WEEK! I'm sorry but I have no idea why people do these FAD diets, because that's all they are, a fad, they're not healthy at all. I've lost 6kgs in about a month, purely but reducing my portion size, eating more healthy and doing moderate exercise and drinking tonnes of water. Hi Chocos, Thanks for your input, and congratulations on your success. I am quite aware of what healthy weight loss is, and have also consulted with a doctor. Just to point out every persons situation is different, and although 6 pounds may seem like a lot to you, it isn't a lot for someone like me who is considered "morbidly obese". I have now been on the diet for 5 days, and although in the first 3 days I lost a lot of weight, it has slowed down now, and I think it will most likely even out to 1-2pounds a week. The only thing that has really been cut out of my diet is chocolate, sweets, sugar, bread, pasta, rice and potatoes (basically anything processed or starchy) as well as any alcohol, thats been completely cut out for me too. The rule is not to eat fruit but on the days when you eat veg and protein I also add in 2 pieces of fruit which isn't actually part of the diet but I really can't live without it, so I added it in. I've tried many other weight loss methods including hiring a dietician, weight watchers and just halving my portions, but unfortunately the cravings I get from still including starches leads me astray, so far this has been the only diet on which my hunger pangs have been eliminated. My only other option at the moment would be gastric banding which I really don't want to do, so since this is working for me I'm pretty pleased. ETA: I had also spent a lot of time on google checking all the articles which claimed this diet was unhealthy, and found that the majority of them focused on the attack phase, which only lasts 1-10 days (which Dukan suggests you get medical supervision if going for 7-10 days), the rest of the diet is actually pretty healthy, it doesn't eliminate fat altogether it eliminates adding extra fat, and it has you eating veggies for the duration as well, then gradually brings back in most foods. <em>edited by Ashleigh on 24/04/2011</em>

Wheat bran in place of baking powder? not sure how that would work. Sorry I meant can you use baking powder, and can you use wheat bran? I saw some recipes which included those ingredients and wasn't sure if they're allowed as they weren't listed. So far I'm planning on not eating anything not on the list as I've done this for 3 days and already lost 2.8kg!!! I know it slows down soon and I know its only water weight but its really motivating! :):)

Hey ladies, Another question from me, i've been looking at this website www.mydukandiet.com and have seen the recipes on there which look quite good! A few of them say you can use wheat bran as well for cooking as well as baking powder, but I haven't come across this in the book yet, so is it true? Also, a few recipes say you can use 0% fat cream cheese, is that like philidelphia lite and is it really allowed? Also, I was thinking about Cool Whip, not sure what i would use it for but think that is just 0 calorie, 0 fat 0 everything, do you think it would be OK to use that too? <em>edited by Ashleigh on 22/04/2011</em>

Caution with the Ducan Diet. the National Agency of Food has classified it as unhealthy, so as the British Dietetic Association who called it the "Do-Can't diet" and cautions against it. The Director of University Nutrition in Washignton called it "Atkins reincarnated". really? I'm surprised, I thought the Atkins diet never allowed veggies throughout the weight loss process, but had you eating high fat quantities which was why it was so terrible for you....

Ok, another question, I've just read up to the part where after you finish the attack phase, you enter the cruise phase, and he recommends you do 5 days on 5 days off. or 1 day on 1 day off, What are you ladies doing? If you need to lose a lot of weight are you better off doing the 5 on 5 off? Also if you do go onto the 5/5 should go straight into including veggies after the attack phase for 5 days, and then go back to protein only for the next 5 days and so on and so forth? TIA
