Trublu, has she found the autism society here in Perth? They are fantastic, the site is www.autism.org.au. They have seminares for parents of children newly diagnosed and information such as approved OT, etc. Best of luck, but I'll second that it's good she is in Australia and they are diagnosed this early as they will get much more services.

Thanks ladies, great advice. I'm going to call about the config and seating tomorrow. I guess my main worry is the 2 yo - if he's really overtired he can cry for hours. The 4 yo is a dream traveler.

We brought back EVERYTHING! Fridge, washer, dryer, BBQ (had it sandblasted and repainted), outdoor pots, truly everything. I really would have brought more if I had known just how much more expensive it is here and if I had had the time (and energy) to clean everything that thoroughly. I scrubbed the pots with a wire brush! I've found outdoor furniture here to be reasonable and much better quality. That's about all I wouldn't bring! :) Even though it's more expensive, it's fabulous here.

Oh yes, cars and gas are really expensive here! Try www.gumtree.com to see prices of used cars if you want to do some research.

I've been here 3 months, but will try to help with what I've found. I second CT, my food bill is about the same as in Dubai, however, it feels like things don't go off as fast as they do in Dubai so maybe that's why. Eating out is expensive here. A pub lunch for us (3.5 people) is easily 100$A with a beer/wine or two. Babysitters are easy to find so that's nice. In terms of schooling, private schools are on the order of 10-13K per year, 7-9K for catholic. However, they have some fantastic government schools and they're free. My current thought is my DD (4) will got to public primary and private secondary, but a lot of people do private all the years here. But you'll have to look at the school districts related to the places you're thinking of looking. I'll post a link to school lists when I get to the proper computer. For rentals, I would look on the REIWA site to get some ideas. Good places to look S of river are Bichton, Applecross, Shellys. Maybe City Beach or Hillarys for beach life and good schools. North would be Mt Lawley, Inglewood perhaps. The western suburbs are more pricey but lovely such as wembly, shenton park, Claremont. This is just a list to let you get a feel for the rents within a 20 min commute, by no means inclusive. In terms of lifestyle, you can really live happily cheaply here with kids as there are many parks, outdoor activities and beaches so close to everything here. I've found the people friendly and really great so far. Of course, if you go out a lot it's pretty expensive. HTH, if I can help in any other way just ask. edited by Cakepop on 21/03/2012

I'm afraid I'm no help then - I live close to the Inglewood campus and could have walked over to check their boards or given you my area info. Shame. Off hand, though, maybe get in touch with Acton Real Estate, they're huge here. Also, I have the name of a relocation company, but they handle corporate placements. Mostly furnished, though. I'm assuming you're looking on REIWA for rentals? If you want to post your email I can drop you the info I have, but maybe someone else knows Joondalup and can help more.

I don't know if you want to experiment with food and try new things but in my country (Libya) we have a lot of vegetarian delicious dishes. I can give you a few recipes if you'd like. The first one is actually Libyan and Israeli dish, its called Shakshuka which is eggs poached in spicy tomato sauce and you eat it with bread, dip bread into the dish with your hands. I absolutely love this dish. UAE2012, thanks for the recipe. I've had this at a restaurant and it tasted amazing. Definitely adding it to the Mondays menu!

My DS had SEVERE reflux, diagnosed at hospital as he was having so much trouble. It took a good two weeks to start working but the zantac/motilium combo turned our lives around. I had him on zantac for about 7 months and zantac/motilium until he started solids. Dr had us start solids early (4 mo, didn't work out the greatest for us) in order to start weaning him of motilium. It was a pain but it helped us have a normal life and stopped DS from having milk making him horribly uncomfortable and burning him. He was diagnosed around 4 weeks.

Thanks Ginnee, that sounds great. I am going to put the ingredients on the shopping list and try it out. Sounds amazing. Catawba, perhaps we should swap recipes to encourage each other! Here's what I've made for today - http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Grilled-Eggplant-Parmigiana-238668 - not amazingly healthy but really yummy. Next week I am going to try a lentils and goat cheese recipe that I have and then I think I will try Ginnee's fettah. For your fish resolution, I have an amazingly easy and fantastic salmon recipe if you're interested.

Only been in Perth for about a month, but we have loved StickeyBeaks, outdoor park and cafe in Kings Park. There seem to be quite a few indoor play areas, but the weather is lovely so we haven't had to find one yet! There's a newspaper called The Parents' Paper -perhaps its online? - that has a tonne of information on classes, depending on area. But nothing is far here. They have MyGym and a lot of toddler dance classes. If you know where you will be housed I would be happy to look for something for you. Must say, we absolutely love it here. Good luck.

Not to tangent, but I am a US citizen getting another country's passport at the moment. I was told directly by the US consulate that if the country asked me to renounce my nationality and I chose to I would have to be interviewed by the US consulate. If I said "they're making me" or something of the sort, they would refuse my renunciation of my citizenship. Doesn't affect the new country (ie I tried), and I keep my citizenship on the down low, so to speak. Perhaps it is the same in Australia. That said, it's really difficult to think of giving up part of who you are, especially if you've been in the UAE with both options for a while. I don't envy you, but wish you luck.

Try Aurelie from Boudoir Chic. You can like her on Facebook. I don't know if she carries the brands you mentioned, but she's lovely and a bra expert. She will come to your house and fit you, then order what she thinks you would need

If my maid is sick, she stays home. Not because I'm particularly kind hearted, I just don't want her to give it to the kids. Unfortunately for her, it's usually my kids who give it to her. She always pays for her own medicine or takes from our stash, but I would pay if she mentioned it. I would give him the money, but ask for a receipt.

Hi cake pop Congrats on your move. We have a house in Perth and lived in daglish and mount hawthorn before buying. The areas you speak of are neighboring suburbs pretty much of where we lived. I believe sheton collage is good as TK suggested but as for other schools not sure. My girlfriend returned to Perth with her 7 and 4 yr old, I will ask her by text tomorrow for you what schools her kids are going to, and get bk to you. All the suburbs you mention are close to public transport too which is great to get in and out of city. If you guys are pet lovers then Perth is like dog central and there are so many lovely parks you can take the dogs to for a walk and even off lead socialization. :( our poor boys miss the daglish dog park and their buddies. Thanks AussiePup. Any info is great. Yes, we're looking forward to getting another dog as this climate and atmosphere will be perfect. It's been two years so the timing is right for another. It's a bit hard to get a yard in the areas we're looking, so I'm hoping the parks in the area will be dog-friendly.

Congratulations on your move. I would suggest that you keep looking until you find 'the' house that ticks all of your boxes. Have you looked at the reviews on the My School website? Apparently Shenton College is a great secondary school. I am a 'south of the river girl' so am not much help with your suburbs, but they are all lovely. Can I ask which company you used to relocate and were you happy with them? Thanks TwoKids, I just don't know if waiting would get to a house that ticks all the buttons anyway. It's a tough call. I think the fact that all the areas we looked at are really nice is not helping! As for relo, we used Allied Pickfords for the move. Verdict is out on that one - will see when it comes to Perth, but they were fine to work with in Dubai. We're using Perth Relocation Management here and they are good as well. They have more of a rental focus, but know the areas and have been really friendly and great.

I find it very strange when I phone prospective maids and they immediately begin interviewing ME. What type of house, where are we located etc. I thought I was hiring them. We are an easy going American family looking for a maid. Silly me. I actually think that's a natural response. If you were going for a job interview, you would research the company - where they are located, what facilities they have, etc. - which these maids cannot do through the internet! Also, very few drive, so to interview at a place that's far away from public transport and their extended family (friends, church, etc) would be wasting your time and theirs.

One of the teachers at DD's nursery would take items and sell them at the Safa flea market (on her own time) and give the money to an orphanage in Africa that she is involved with. If you're interested in something like that I can give you a contact.

My kids only eat it if I make a cheese sauce. Kind of defeats the healthy purpose, but I count it as 1 of my 5! I just make a quick bechamel and add grated cheese. Keeps in the fridge for a few days.

My aircon is pretty aggressive, but I store my buttercream frosted cakes at room temperature. They are always good for about 3 days. I noticed on the sugar daddy's (hey sugar) boxes that they say to refridgerate only if it contains cream cheese, so seems to validate it. Must be honest, though, I don't do fondant.

I've younger children, but here's what I do. Tonimer (or similar sea salt spray) in the nose as many times as I can get it during the day. Always about 15 minutes before bed I give a really long squirt. I give calpol at night for the pain, but only if they wake up. If this goes on for more than 7 days, I will go to an antibiotic, but the sea salt spray usually does the trick. Hope that helps.

If you cancel rather than transfer, you would need the current sponsor to cancel (he then gets his 2000 deposit back) and you have 30 days to issue her a visa. I don't know if you need an NOC from the original sponsor. Otherwise as Mohandissa said, maid's passport, copy of sponsor's passport with residency visa. Then they both sign something, voila.

I've been told that if you transfer then her validity stays the same (ie October), whereas if you cancel the visa and then reissue a new one you get a year of validity. I've been told the costs are only slightly higher for the cancelation/reissue option. HTH.
