I have been a member of the Facebook page "Doha Sale Alert", which involves members informing of sales they have found. It also provides a place to advertise garage/boot/compound sales and has been quite a help in finding bargains in Doha. I know this wasn't quite the question asked but it is a helpful, positive site!

If one cannot leave Qatar with debt but one cannot pay debt due to loss of salary/job, how long can one be held in Qatar? Looking for facts not opinion on loan repayment please.

I relocated from Canada and had the same question! Might I suggest tampons make their way into your bags?! They are available here but not always the brand names you may prefer. Remember you can get adapters for electronics/appliances easily. I wish I had brought my quality hair dryer and straightener. I am also very glad to have purchased an electronic reader before coming here, as books are available but so much easier to source with an e-reader! I hope this helps and welcome to you and yours!

Can anyone recommend a surgeon in Doha who does bladder lifts/tucks? Stress incontinence is affecting my activities of daily living and I have had enough! Alternate suggestions for resolution also appreciated, including personal experiences, if anyone cares to share...I know I am not alone in this humiliating problem. Thanks for any responses in advance...

Hello BEDH! I would like to live at Ghanem Gardens! I bought items from someone who was leaving earlier in the summer and thought it was a lovely place to call home. Can you tell me if villas become available often? Are you happy there? Any information you wish to share will be appreciated...thanking you in advance....

Hello Scottiedog.... Having gone to a psychiatrist at Doha Clinic Hospital for months in order to get my prescription for antidepressant, I have recently noticed that a prescription is not truly necessary. Simply going into a pharmacy and asking for your medication is usually enough. I quite like the pharmacy at the Dar Al Salam mall in Abu Hamour. They are friendly and informative and I have indeed been offered Prozac over the counter as my own medication is currently unavailable in the country...grrr! I do recommend you try just asking at pharmacy counters before you jump through the hoops of psychiatry departments as I did, believing this was the only way to continue my meds. I have been on Paxil for a decade and somehow having to see a psychiatrist was slightly shameful to me...best wishes!

Hello! My husband is delighted with the shirts and suits he had made at Century Tailors, which we found because of this site's recommendations. I love word of mouth! If you search them on this site, you will find excellent directions. Bringing in a picture of what you want made is helpful but not necessary. It depends upon the level of detail you are looking for. The staff are friendly, efficient, easy to communicate with and reliable. Good Luck!

Hello BEDH! I didn't notice a children's play area but admittedly I wasn't looking for one! It seemed fairly well organized so perhaps it is just on the weekends as you suggested. FYI...I have gotten lazy/comfortable in Doha and offered my left hand for a tasting spoonful of honey. What a faux pas! Just a reminder to offer your right hand from one who embarrassed herself and potentially insulted a man today.

I continue to be pleased with Desert Princess despite its recent change in personnel. It is always a personal, calming experience with professionalism and quality for the reasonable cost. I have very short hair in this delightful climate(!) and am pleased with the cuts I have had at Desert Princess and their threading services are awesome as well! You can find them on Facebook and they are close to Ain Khalid Gate compound. Best wishes!

Thanks Picklz! The trade fair was quite enjoyable and we came home with some Saudi dates, hibiscus tea and honey. A food theme for us today. Thanks for responding, Picklz. I appreciate it and had a great experience with your assistance.

We would welcome you at AKG! The biggest negative for myself is about to be remedied as we are being hooked up to the sewage system rather than having septic systems that require pump trucks to empty the tanks. Hooray! This is a great compound and especially if you have children as there are lots of families here. Many people who are single or couples without children find it challenging, I understand. We are a couple without children here but we are happy. There are prettier places to live with prettier price tags so it depends on what your wishes are. Sometimes it feels dark in the apartments due to the tinted windows and architecture itself and the views can be lacking. Our apartment is a three bedroom and it is spacious. All of the apartments I have seen thus far have high ceilings and crown moulding to add to the spacious feeling. The kitchens and bathrooms are just adequate. The maintenance has been good with short wait times for tasks and general cleanliness in the common areas of the buildings and the grounds is good. Ceramic floors throughout, decent stainless steel appliances, somewhat of a lack of electrical outlets,...these things come to mind. Let me know what else you would like to know; I want to be helpful to you!

We must serve only low-brow drinks like beer or Canadian Club, lol! It may help DebK with her pedicure entertainment quality, after all! Perhaps we shall add comic books, pamphlets and grocery ads to our list of reading. Inappropriate shoes and lipgloss are officially added to the list as well and passports will not be collected nor RPs. And you don't have to live in a " nice" compound to join but intimate knowledge of malls and shops and spas and hotel bars is a plus. You guys are fun to play with!

I never want to add to the anonymous negativity that can be seen on Internet forums and have always just let ignorant people continue on their merry way through life. But I wouldn't join this proposed book club if they invited me on bended knee. The writer certainly lacks flair with the English language to begin with and has insulted a great many people on this forum. A great many people with wonderful educations, countries of origin, intentions and interests. Perhaps the writer made a mistake by saying she was planning to ask radical questions...perhaps the letter d was not necessary? How serious can she be, proposing to meet at malls and when at her home, serving alcoholic drinks? I question her own intentions! We are all strangers here. It is nothing like our home countries, for many here, and it is disheartening to see people wishing to recreate the worst of their backgrounds, including elitism of any kind. Such a close-minded vision for someone who thinks education and background are so important....if you added "class" as a requirement, I suppose you would be excluded from your own group! To everyone who responded in kind, I would now like to start a magazine club where only the brainless housewives of Doha may attend while getting manis and pedis and then lunch and shopping. You must have read the latest issue of Cosmo and Glamour or you need not apply! We are all in this together...let us be kind to one another.

Once again, I highly recommend Desert Princess in the area of Ain Khalid. Your experience will be professional, relaxing and it will not bankrupt you. Offering a high level of expertise and experience in all of the services they offer, Desert Princess is Australian-managed and you will definitely feel comfortable and confident when there. Find them on Facebook or read previous posts. The compliments I get on my hairstyle are wonderful to hear and I know that I am truly listened to when I go to Desert Princess for all salon services. You will not be disappointed!

Well gee...was there any coffee shop in particular you are waiting for??! Maybe one named after a hockey player? One that has brown cups? One where you can order your coffee " double double"? You are not alone, my friend. Not a chance! See you at Timmie's soon!

Hello...I used Qatar Pet Relocaters or QPRI and Janet was excellent. I have noted since my arrival that many vet clinics also provide this service and would recommend Qatar Veterinary Centre as they have a full-time, dedicated team for this. Best wishes to you and your felines!

Thanks for your kind words, Deb K. I had a job interview yesterday for a position I will absolutely love once a position is actually available: I can wait! Any advice about getting a permit to work as a trailing spouse??

Hi Deb...I hope your recovery is going well and your surgery was minor! Thanks for responding to me. I am not yet missing Ontario but am also a little stir crazy in my compound as I have run out of things to clean and am realizing the futility in "dusting" here in the desert! Because I have a varied background, I am applying to different sectors. My education is from Conestoga College in both practical nursing and in print journalism and I have focused on child care for the past number of years. A back injury and resulting surgery keep me from nursing. I have applied for jobs in reception at vet clinics and dental offices as well as applying to nurseries. My English skills are decent so I would really love a job copy editing or proof reading. I do not wish to make a ton of money but would like to stay stimulated and social. What do you do for work? I am enjoying FaceTime with my daughter and pretend to complain about the sunny days here, lol. How long have you been in Doha? Who are you here with? I am in my forties and here with hubby. Our children are grown but our cats are here with us:) Thanks again for reaching out and do get well soon! Joanne

Hello All...I have just joined the site and one of your usernames caught my eye. YYZDOH, that's me too! I have been here for a month now, having moved from southern Ontario. I grew up in Cambridge, Hespeler to be clear, lol. I live at Ain Khalid Gate as hubby is airline. The isolation is just beginning to seep in and I would like to chat with fellow Canadians if possible. Not a lot of luck on gaining employment yet and wonder about the experiences of others. So...Hello to All, not just the Canucks!

Hi parkclarke, there are a tonne of us here at Y Village too, so if you move around here you will recognise the accents. That being said, although I have a lot of Canadian friends now, I can't believe the diversity of multiculturalism at every house party we have! We are late 40's, no young kids. We lived in Orangeville and Cambridge Ontario before here, with hubby born in Toronto, and I was born outside of Ottawa. I would be glad to meet up once you get here, but drop me a line with any questions you have in the meantime. :) And for DebK, those places all bring back memories! Furthest north I got was North Bay, it's a bit warmer here ;)
