I really understand the grass isn't always greener - this is why have the constant battle with myself if i am doing the right thing and i would of course give her time off in the week if she needed it to look for another job (she doesn't work weekends). I just wanted to make sure i am not going to get her or myself in any trouble. Her visa expires in November so this is a natural time to make the break if we are going to. Thanks for your advice.

Hi, just looking for advice here. I would like to employ a new maid as although our current maid is nice and honest we are just not gelling, it has been two years and for purely personal reasons, its time to change. What i need to know is what do i need to do, should i give her a months notice so she can try to find another employer that would fit her better? If she does this then i am assuming we can just transfer her visa to the new employer. Or do we just cancel it and send her home? I don't want to ruin her life but i dont want to expose us by doing anything that is not legal, or giving her the chance to abscond - i dont think she would but.... Also should we be paying a gratuity - if so how much? and any other advise on what i need to do to make this changeover possible would be greatfully received. If anyone has any suggestions on how to find a maid that will be the right fit i would be grateful to hear them too. TIA

Hi, I am just wondering what people do when they go back to the UK for summer, I am looking to hire a car for 5 weeks - nobody seems to hire for that length of time and the prices are extortionate! I don't want to buy it I just want to rent it. Any suggestions/recommendations would be welcome. Thanks

Hi, Not a kiwi but did spend 4 months living in Picton, just down the road from Blenheim, and we loved it, yes very small town, which has good and bad to it like every small town in the world I should imagine, but we found people were very friendly, In the short time we stayed there we were welcomed into the community and people really did seem to go out of their way to make us feel welcome. Blenheim was nice, like they said right in the middle of all the vineyards, lovely scenery. Yes nightlife is a bit scarce but with a little one I guess you wont be out that much of an evening. I would say definitely make sure you have work before you go because it is a small community, but if it was our choice, well my husband would have us packed and on our way before we could blink. The kiwis can be a funny breed (cant we all) and they just tend to say it like it is but if you are open to them I believe they are open to you. Good luck with your decision!

Hi our wifi hub is upstairs so downstairs our internet is a bit flaky and practically non existent in our maids room. Does anyone know anyone who could come and take a look? we have had a look at the boosters things but am told they wont work because of the thickness of the walls between the maids room and living room, and also because the hub is on a different circuit to her electrics. Any suggestions or numbers of people that could help will be really appreciated!!

Hi Silly question I am sure but where is the nearest NBAD bank or place I can pay my NBAD credit card - I was told there was one in Mirdif city centre but cant see it on their web page. And my final silly question of the day - surely it must be possible to set up a direct debit for this card? even though I don't bank with NBAD. I guess I can ask at the branch.....when I can find it! Thanks for helping a particularly stupid person today :-)

Great info, thanks. Can you remember how much it cost - I was told 85 AED but is that each (mine and my husbands) Presumably we can sign all the documents before we go - does my Husband have to be present or is it ok if I just have his documentation with me?

We live in Mirdif and by "getting rid of cats" i mean getting rid of them from my garden and putting them somewhere else, like a home for strays or something. I do not wish them any harm,i just dont want them around my sons play area. The mum runs away and leaves the kitten every time i go out there, i will try and get a sneaky photo and post.

Hi We have guests coming over soon and one of them is on medication, and one of the tablets they are on is listed as banned by Dubai, they apparently need to do something to confirm they can bring them into the country. Has anyone had any experience of this? Thanks in advance

Hi I am trying to find a pair of ear protectors for my ds who is 4. We have some things coming up that may involve loud noises and as much as he can shout with the best of them sometimes he gets upset with certain loud noises so would like to have a pair handy to muffle the sound. Anybody have any idea where i can get them from? Thanks

Hi My son starts school in September and i was originally thinking we would look for a live in maid/child carer to cover the after school until i return from work. Can i have some advise please, is this the best option, what other options are there? The getting a live in maid route seems very complicated to a new person to Dubai and feels quite odd to me but i would like help with housework too but DS after school care comes first. Any suggestions of things that may work would be gratefully received

Me time? Almost never, but I'm with daza once my husband is home from work, parenting is equally shared, neither of is really get much me time. Occasionally I get to close the bathroom door while I use the toilet, a rare treat! Oh thank goodness, i thought it was only me that thinks it a treat to go to the toilet undisturbed!!

we were there yesterday and once last week and we really enjoyed it both times, like angel joy said you might want to limit the spend per child but my lo just wants to go on the inflatables 20 dhs for an hour but we were in there an hour and half and the snow area 10 dhs for an hour i think but again they were not strict on time limit - so not too expensive, the shows are free - and they change daily i think, the thomas tank show was good, and we saw Modhesh world show last time and a mime show, yesterday we watched a dinosaur show but it was a little too scary for my lo (and me too! I have a thing about dinosaurs) We went early so it was really quiet, its not in as big an area as i was imagining and it is easy to walk around it all and then choose where we wanted to go. Definitly worth a trip and i am pretty sure we will head that way one more time before it closes.

I think i might to a beach day, or maybe try favourite things, I had looked at that on a website. I think i better wait for Daddy to be around before wild wadi - i would not be popular if i went without him! Thanks again :-)

I am interested in 3 bed villas, with gardens and shared pool - is there any particular area i should look out for? Thanks for any info

Hi I agree with Thunderbird. We have just been through the process of finding a school as we move out in August. We went for a discovery trip in May and got a feel for the area. To be honest, to me the housing appears to be set up quite similar in all of the areas, you just choose the area/price you like best. We are being put up for one month when we get there so can choose an area when we are out there, either near the school or near work. As for expats, well the few we managed to meet in the week were very lovely and helpful in offering advice and even showing around. I think (and hopefully I am not wrong) if you are open to people you will find everyone very friendly. If you want to know more about the school process there is probably a forum on here about them or you can mail me mrsclairepriceatgmaildotcom I am happy to share our experience. Good luck with your move!

thanks Ladybirdsarethebest We will be working in media city and everybody is telling us Mirdif is too far but we loved the school and there isn't a lot of other choices, we are awaiting an assessment at Raffles but both of us have a good feeling about Mirdif and sometimes I think you have to trust your instinct.

Hi Just want some general opinion, we have been out for a week and have fallen in love with gems royal Dubai school and have secured a place for our son, however we both will be working in media city - so was wondering what people think the commute will be like? It didn't seem too bad while we were there, about 20/25 minutes. We do have other schools in the boiling pot nearer to work but we haven't liked them as much! Just wanted some opinions on it. Thanks
