I am glad I saw this thread because I had no idea the licenses here state that the license is just for manual and/or automatic. I didn't have to take the courses as I had my US license and they gave me an Emirates one... but it does only state its an automatic license. And I do know how to drive manual... For visiting other countries and possibly renting a manual, I am reminded by this thread to make sure and renew my US license.

If there is a possibility of them in empty flats, maybe you should call Dubai Municipality? I just don't know what they use for the rats and I wonder if they take precautions so outdoor/stray cats and dogs aren't affected by it... <em>edited by Abaddon on 15/05/2012</em>

At the beginning of last summer we got about one huge cockroach every single day in our bathroom. One day while cleaning the shower I sprayed shower cleaner into the little overflow holes thingy and out came two cockroaches. Now, the holes look way too small for those big ones, but they fit right through!! I shoved in little plastic baggies into the that overflow hole and also the one in the sink. We use the rubber plug in the shower to plug the tub now too. And for the bathroom sink I have a little strainer thingy covering drain. Every few days I take the pif paf that comes with the straw and spray into the drains just for extra measure. My BIL now every month opens the manholes in our home and pours in boiling water and then pif pafs the ones that don't die from it. And every month they are always in there. Gross!! <em>edited by Abaddon on 15/05/2012</em>

If you are planning on donating them by placing them in those bins, just know they do not go to charities. Here is the story from last year: http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news/donated-second-hand-clothes-are-being-sold-on-to-traders

What if I was a tenant for like 6 years... should the landlord paint the house/repair the holes at his cost out of courtesy for renting from him for so long? My friend thinks her landlord should do it all for free because she has rented the place for 6 years... though I told her that whether or not she stays 1 or 6 years, she signs a yearly lease that states she has to return it in new condition. She is arguing with her landlord over this...and the landlord is telling her it's still her responsibility.

for soft tofu, I love a Japanese dish named "yudofu" I take about 2 cups of water (I don't usually measure when I cook), a packet of "dashi no moto" (its a Japanese bonito broth powder, but I think you could use veggie broth or even chicken broth), a tbs of sugar, about 3 TBS of soy sauce, and thinly sliced slivers of fresh ginger. Bring it to a boil and slide in a whole block of soft/silken tofu that has been cut in large cubes. Simmer for about 10 minutes and serve. so simple but sooooo good. For extra firm tofu, hands down my fav is this recipe: http://showmevegan.blogspot.com/2009/02/sesame-tofu-bowl-with-peanut-dressing.html tofu and peanut dressing is a match made in heaven. I also make this same tofu and peanut dressing, but dilute the dressing a bit with some more water and then mix it in with soba noodles and then mix in julienned carrots and cucumbers, sprinkle on some roasted sesame seeds (sometimes you can find the crushed/ground roasted sesame seeds in the Japanese section at Spinneys but not always) and then the tofu cubes on top--yummmmy! <em>edited by Abaddon on 24/11/2011</em>

Just be very careful that the car is fully signed over to you before you hand over payment. There are scams out there where people pay ahead of time before it being signed over and the owner takes off with the money and the car, still fully owning the car. and from what I read in the past, the police can't really help you. Though I don't know if that is true or not.

I have a recipe for Machboos (Also called Fooga) that is easier than stovetop cooking as it is cooked in the oven. I used to have so much trouble cooking Arabic rice dishes on the stovetop and my friend came across a recipe that is foolproof. I just changed up the spices to Machboos spices and voila! Here is the link: http://www.food.com/recipe/machboos-or-fooga-traditional-united-arab-emirates-dish-126040 I made it for my in-laws (my husband is Emirati) when they first came to visit me in Australia and they were shocked that I could make it...though they did question why I baked it LOL note: I used to line the pyrex baking dish with foil for easy clean-up but my BIL like it so much he was trying to scrape the rest from the pan and too much was stuck to the foil... so just grease your dish well so if anyone wants to scrape for the last bits, it won't be difficult. ohhhh just watch the salt amount you use as the chicken bouillon cubes themselves can be salty depending on which ones you buy :) there are reviews from members of the site but unfortunately noone posted any photos yet...and neither have I... but another similar recipe of mine has member photos if you want to see: http://www.food.com/recipe/chicken-rice-and-spices-bake-105104 ***also, do not soak the rice... many people soak their rice for an hour or two which would be fine but then you need to adjust the amount of water to cook with--and I don't know what the adjustment would be if you soaked it for my recipe. <em>edited by Abaddon on 23/11/2011</em>

I believe pumpkin seeds can be directly planted in the ground or large pot. I have not grown pumpkin before and this season I am growing sweet dumpling pumpkins, but they are small compared to the big pumpkins. As for your carrots you planted in the ground before-- did you loosen up the soil and pat it back down lightly before planting the seeds? The soil may have been packed down too much to where the carrot roots couldn't grow.

My husband is so picky with vegetables I have to be a, bit sneaky... I usually blend veggies into tomato bases sauces... You can chop some veggies into small pieces, sautee or stream till done. Then blend in blender/food processor with a small amount of water until you can't recognize the veggies at all... Then add to your sauce ingredients so it blend into the tomato sauce. I have also done this with a red pepper/capsicum based sauce. My husband has no clue about it! You can also add low fat cream cheese to the sauce to make it creamy. <em>edited by Abaddon on 20/10/2011</em>

shumahmed, I order them from smartpots.com if you would like, I can hold off a couple days and order some with you (I can order them and you pay me later) and we can split the shipping cost (I can bring them to you when we swap seeds) orders up to $100 shipping is $22 from $100-$200 it is $30 and from $200 and up it is $38 If you don't order that many I will charge shipping accordingly... meaning not completely split in half. :) I alone will have about $100 worth of pots to order... maybe even a little more. Also, as for seeds, I am worried about my San Marzano varieties.. they just aren't doing well... I re-started some but I am out of the San Marzano Redorta seeds now and only 2 have germinated so far (its been 8 days now) I would like some of your San Marzano seeds please...and the strawberry seeds :) I am confused about the strawberry seeds... I have to research some more... some take many many months before they produce strawberries while others produce after about 4 months or so. Then some produce continuously, while others produce a batch at once, and then a couple months later produce another batch.. ha ha ha Also, just so you know, I will travel from November 4th thru the 11th. So if the smart pots don't come before I would have to wait to get them to you after my trip. The last time I ordered Smart Pots, they arrived 11 days after I ordered them :) edited by Abaddon on 19/10/2011 <em>edited by Abaddon on 19/10/2011</em>

Here is my seed list (most are from the US) some varieties I have more seeds than others so some I might only be able to give away a few and others I can give away a lot (depending on how many people want any of the varieties). Also, as I have planted several of each tomato varieties I am growing, if I get any excess that are succsessful, I will have established plants ready to give away as well-I will mark the varieties with a * (My first batch I germinated aren't doing too well so I re-started on the 10th.. it will take a about 6-8 weeks I think until I will be ready to know if I have any to give away) I am including the sites I got them from so you can look them up if you are interested Tomatoes (I will list variety and color) --from tomatofest.com: Determinate varieties: (only grow up to around 3' tall and produce tomatoes once--not necessarily all at once-- and then dies): Siletz- red (haven't tried these) Homestead 24- red (taste like regular store bought tomatoes) Fargo- yellow (very cute small pear shaped tomatoes but flavor was kind of bland) Indeterminates (grows tall and keeps producing throughout the growing season-- until the weather kills them) Marianna's Peace- pink-red Paul Robeson- black Ananas Noir- black Amana Orange- orange *Kellogg's Breakfast- orange Great White- palest of yellow *Green Giant- Green Hezou- came as a free pack but there is no info on this one..I think its red. **although I don't have anymore seeds I can give away, I have planted several seeds of two varieties I may be able to give away as established plants if they are successful. these are (from tomatfest.com as well): *San Marzano Redorta *Super San Marzano More tomatoes from glecklerseedmen.com(all indeterminates) *Orange Minsk - orange *Burning Spear- golden shoulders, deepening to orange on bottom Brandywine Sudduths- pink Carrots (all from kitazawaseedcompany.com) Lunar White- white Solar Yellow- yellow Atomic Red- Red Kyoto Red- Red (while all the others mature in 60-some days, this one takes 120 days!) Eggplant (all from tomatogrowers.com in the USA)--all are non-bitter varieties Fairytale Hybrid- lavender with white stripes Listada de Gandia- purple and white stripes Rosa Bianca- lavender and white Rosita- pink-lavender (cross between a white variety and Black Beauty) Round Mauve- rosy-lavender Zucchini or Courgette-all from (johnnyseeds.com) Costata Romanesca- medium gray-green *only half the yield of hybrid varieties (but considered the best tasting) --noted for their heavy male blossoms- great if you like to eat the blossoms. This will be my first time growing zucchini so I am excited to try them! Beets (all from johnnyseeds.com) Touchstone Gold- orange Bull's Blood- deep red with candy striping I can't wait to taste the varieties I am growing this season! <em>edited by Abaddon on 16/10/2011</em>

I have some bad looking seedlings as well..mainly from the San Marzano tomato varieties... I planted quite a bit of both varieties to ensure getting some healthy plants but so far only a few are doing good. I just got my order from the US for the 2 other varieties I want to grow so I am going to replant more San Marzano seeds with them. This time I will put a shade cloth over them while in the sun. If they sold more tightly woven cheesecloth here I would use that and put the seedling cups all in a bigger plastic basket and wrap it with the cheesecloth to prevent the leaf miner flies... but they only sell the loose woven cheesecloth here! Last year I tried covering my seedlings with those mesh laundry bags but because they aren't cotton, they absorbed heat and my seedlings suffered in them. Luckily I found them before it was too late...they were all stumped over but they recovered after removing them from the bag. Also, for leaf miners... how early can you start spraying the plants to kill the flies? I know you can't kill the larvae eating through the leaf without damaging the leaf, but I would like to spray with a oil soap concoction in the early morning... Do they have to be past the seedling stage to start spraying?

There are people who anyways direct plant their tomato, pepper seeds etc... Instead of starting seeds in small containers then potting up. with potting up once or twice, you bury the stem up to the first leaves and then roots grow from the buried stem. so you are just giving these plants time to produce a better root system before their final planting. Just having started your seeds in smaller containers is better than direct seeding. I pot up twice before final transplanting but thats because I am newer to gardening and I just want to follow what is most recommended. I am waiting on some seeds from the US and then I may be able to do a seed swap... :)

Mmmm one time I ate at a, restaurant named Fratelli La Bufala and they had a pasta with ricotta sauce... there was a lemon flavor in it.. But I would be nervous of curdling the cream with lemon juice... maybe simmer lemon peel with cream on a low low heat for a few minutes? I would guess just blend the ricotta and cream together and add it to sauteed mushrooms and your pasta, simmer for a few minutes till thickened, then add parsley. <em>edited by Abaddon on 04/10/2011</em>

I have never had anyone come grab my trolley without my permission... If someone is waiting around I tell them to go ahead and take the trolley. If not, I will take the trolley to the trolley thingy and hand it to whoever is usually lurking around there. But one day, as I took my trolley back, from a distance I saw there were 2 guys there and was going to give it to them but as I approached the trolley thingy, I saw they had blocked people from returning their trolleys by lining up there work stuff (I can't remember what it all was-they were not regular people there like car washers... Maybe they were painters or tilers or something like that...it was large cans of stuff) in front of it. Now that really made me angry and I told them to move their stuff. I could tell they were talking c r @ p about me as they did it. I didn't let them have that dirham then and because of the mumbling they did about me, I went and told the manager what these guys were doing.

Some of my seedlings have gotten their true leaves so I have potted them up to bigger pots... But I am still waiting for a little more than a dozen more seedlings to get their true leaves. After this potting up, I will pot them up one more time before planting them in their final pots! I found out about another new tomato variety named Orange Minsk so I just ordered some seeds... My chili pepper seeds were bad seeds (I stupidly bought them on Ebay) so I decided to order some a few different non-bitter eggplant varieties and one zucchini variety to grow instead. I hope they get here soon!

I wouldn't do this with a baby or child in my car, but if I am alone and someone is tail-gating me and/or high-beaming me and I can't speed up because of cars in front of me or there is no room to get over to the next lane, I brake to let that car know to back off and stop messing with me. I have no problem moving if there is room in the next lane though. I flash people all the time (but I never tail-gate) if they are driving too slow, but I wait to make sure the lane next to them has space for them to move to first.

It sounds like the palm got transplant shock. It is common for palms to go through a transplant shock but there are ways to minimize it. you are supposed to slowly acclimate the palm in the area you want to transplant it to for a week or two while still in it's container. transplant shock also happens because the roots become exposed to air (and sun if transplanting during the day) when you remove it from it's container. I believe you should not have fertilized yet, as it also can cause the palm extra stress while it is getting used to it's new home. I have read before that it can take a few months to a year for it to get out of shock. I think you should consider joining this forum and asking about how to care for your palm now to try and help it out of shock: forums.gardenweb.com/forums/palms/ If you do, make sure to let them know the conditions it was kept where you bought it from and the conditions of where you have transplanted it. the more info the better they can advise you.

As for those yellow clothing bins, the clothing is sold to traders in Africa, who in turn sell the clothing in the markets: www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news/donated-second-hand-clothes-are-being-sold-on-to-traders I wouldn't mind so much if the bins were clearly labelled with signs stating they sell the clothing that is donated. Without it people think their clothing are being donated to the poor. I assumed it was to donate to the poor as well until I read that article.

You should go to the gardening section on the forum =) Anyhow, I have already planted tomato and chili pepper seeds and the ones that germinated so far have been doing good in the full sun despite the heat. Some of them have started to get their true leaves. I have them in lil' paper pots I bought at daiso because I think plastic or ceramic would absorb too much heat and the seedlings might fry. I do have to water them 3 times a day (once in the morning, once around noon, and once around 4pm) because the paper pots they are in are so small they dry quickly. You could also get some shade cloth just to take some of the intensity of the sun off of your seedlings.

Konjac products are gaining a lot of popularity in the west due to it being so low in calories and carbs. In Japan it is called konnyaku. the most popular item right now is shirataki, which are noodles made with konjac powder. we eat it all the time (particularly in sukiyaki) and its yummy :) Those jelly cups were a favorite sweet of mine a long time ago... But I quit eating it a while back... Mostly because it was banned for a while and then I forgot about it.

Lets see... From recommendations on a tomato growing forum, I will mix their Bio-Tech Potting Soil (veg/fruits) with that sweet red sand you mentioned (I was recommended to have sand as 10% of the total mix) and I will add some of the Bio Organic Compost plus shredded paper napkins for some extra water retention. hehehe actually I was surprised when you mentioned the sand being sold because I was just going to go to the desert and take some LOOL --but at 5 dhs a bag that is really cheap!! Actually I wonder if its illegal to just go and take sand? I could just use the potting soil itself but I think it would be a good idea to incorporate some of the desert sand anyways to get some of their minerals. I will also add some epsom salt for calcium in the early stages of the plant growth. The man who helped me said I shouldn't use the peat moss.. he said just to stick with the potting mix and if I needed stuff for a large outdoor garden then I should use the peat moss mixed with other stuff to save some money. The coco peat he told me was just ...I think he said "an agent" (meaning it needs to be mixed with other stuff--its not for use on its own) which I don't need unless again I am trying to cover large outdoor gardens to save money.

oh nooooo! and unfortunately the plant row covers aren't so expensive but they absorb heat so you can't even use those in this weather... of course one company makes one that doesn't absorb heat but its not sold here!!! http://www.gardensalive.com/product.asp?pn=82274 now that I remember this I WISH (still wishing LOL) I had remembered to order this so my nephew who was vacationing in the US could have brought this back for me!!!! heyyy, I just did a google search for how to protect seedlings and here is a really good idea: "Toilet paper rolls, cut in half or thirds, place around seedlings when they sprout..." also: "As for protecting your seedlings or newly planted plants, then sticking twigs in the newly dug soil can keep cats off" thats easy and cheap if you have some toilet paper or even paper towels that are almost used up :D incidentally, I dropped the box with all of my tomato seeds waiting to sprout and totally dislodged almost everything so I have to start over. this time though, I am going to try this one tea prep for seeds that I read about online... http://faq.gardenweb.com/faq/lists/pepper/2002074906031735.html
