I agree, Mirdif or Warqa would be ideal locations for a family as all amenities and facilities would be close by. Warqa has lesser traffic then Mirdif during peak hours, but Mirdif has better roads and street lights. However, all the shortlisted areas will still be far for your husband's workplace.

You can get a personalised engraved pen in any Jashanmal Store across various malls. Their cheapest Cross pen starts at 159dh I think. Very reasonable and good sservice.

I was at Oasis Center today and they had a big sign on the front saying Summer Suprises was June 1 thru the 28th. That's what Oasis Center is calling their in-house shopping promotion, its not the city-wide summer surprise.

Dubai Summer Surprises - 2 Aug to 5 Sept http://m.gulfnews.com/news/uae/leisure/summer-is-dubai-calendar-unveiled-1.1321550 All the sales that are happening at the moment are targeted at vacation-goers who are traveling for the summer so I expect more sales. edited by ajfa on 03/06/2014

Check Cotton & Silk near the carpark in Meena Bazaar. There are many shops selling pakistani wear in the same lane. There is a facebook page called Cotton & Silk UAE where you can see their various collection and prices.

Each Muezzin (person who recites the Adhaan or call to prayer) has his own style / tune / tempo. Perhaps you heard at a different Mosque or maybe there was a guest Muezzin reciting it at your local Mosque. The wordings remain same for all the prayers except the Fajr (sunrise) prayer. There is a difference of a single sentence which is in the call for the morning prayer meaning - Prayer is better than sleep.

I remembered reading an article about Chef service at home sometime back, so did a google search for you and found this. I think its what you're looking for (there's Italian and Thai cuisine), but I have no idea how the service is, maybe someone who has tried them can tell you more. www.chefathomedubai.com

"Driven mad by shouting" - how politely you describe the Friday sermon at the Mosque. Thats hurtful. I can understand it can be difficult for non Muslims, but could have been put across in a better way! edited by ajfa on 09/05/2014

We have bought electronics from Souq.com but only if the vendor is Souq Direct, ie Souq.com sells with its own warranty and service. My phone's battery had some issues, I got it serviced in 2 weeks. No complaints about the product, but there's a long lead time on service. Otherwise no issues. Their courier service will pick up and deliver without any charges. I wouldn't buy electronics from independent vendors. edited by ajfa on 09/05/2014

Just come to Mirdif City Center - adjacent to the mall's front entrance is the Apartment Block community called Ghuroob. Straight up the road from there is the gated Villa community called Shurouq. Use google maps, call and fix appointments with the real estate agents for viewing, Im sure the numbers are available online, if you Google the community names. Straight up from Shurouq you'll reach a roundabout which leads to Uptown Mirdif which is an open plan outdoor mall. All along the way you will see little villas, you can call and check the ones with To Let signboards. Usually a single real estate agent is assigned to this area, so he can tell you where all they have availability. Good luck!

Yes, thats how much cakes are costing these days if you want something highly customised and from a home baker. Personally, I have tried both - home bakers and professional bakeries, I would definitely say the cake tastes much better from the bakeries. If you want a novelty cake then it makes sense to pay so much. I recommend: Mister Baker Brownie Point Bakemart Plus Sugaholic All these places charge 200-300 for a 1kg cake. It varies depending on your requirement. Check Latitude Bakery in Jumeirah Beach Hotel - their website has all the prices. But probably they're more suited for a formal event not a 2YO bday party. Did you check Cobone or Groupon? Sometimes they have good deals for decent places. But you have to make sure that its a good place to go to. We discovered Kalm Spa on Palm Jumeirah through one of their deals. I havent been there personally as I use the services of my parlor cum spa near my house which is very calm and pampering enough for me plus its not crowded. But my hubby went to Kalm for massages thrice already and loves it. I found a not-so-recent article on Kalm http://www.timeoutdubai.com/bodyandmind/features/37039-kalm-holistic-beauty-on-the-palm-jumeirah#.U1yjzlWSxHQ

Would you consider iPilot in Dubai Mall for a simulation flight experience where your husband gets to sit behind the controls and actually maneuver the aircraft with the help of real pilots? You can sit in the "passenger" seat and watch. I have not tried it personally, but 2 of my friends gifted their hubbies that (we are in our 20s :P ) http://flyipilot.ae/flight-experience/

Students are allowed to do part time jobs / temp work. You dont require a labor card. But make sure they carry their student IDs at all times. Its better to read up more abt it as I had read somewhere that you have to register or apply for some permission beforehand. I had a personal experience with this, a handful of us were doing temp jobs and [b'>were let go after we showed our student ID[/b'>s. I'm totally new to this. Any idea where we can get more info? When you say you were "let go", is that fired for not having a labour card? I'll ask my typing office too but I don't think they will have dealt with students temping. I did a google on the subject and found this article http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/education/part-time-work-permit-protects-students-rights-in-uae-1.754380 http://www.emirates247.com/news/emirates/11-000-uae-residents-get-part-time-work-permits-2014-01-23-1.535879 edited by ajfa on 21/04/2014

I'm not sure Dubai is the best place for anyone to get an internship, I'm sorry to say, HM2. The law is very restricting here and part-time or unpaid work for youngsters is probably not legal, from what I have gathered, as you are supposed to need a labour card to work here and a lot of employers don't bother to get them for temporary staff. Although a lot of people seem to ignore the rules and red tape here, it's true, so maybe they'll be able to find something if they keep under the radar. This site explains it better than I have: http://targetjobs.co.uk/careers-advice/working-abroad/341546-working-in-the-united-arab-emirates That being said, good luck to both of them in finding jobs. If they are good at sports or good with children, they might be able to get something at one of the many summer camps that run here from the end of the summer term to the beginning of the autumn one. That is all I can think of off the top of my head. Students are allowed to do part time jobs / temp work. You dont require a labor card. But make sure they carry their student IDs at all times. Its better to read up more abt it as I had read somewhere that you have to register or apply for some permission beforehand. Its difficult to get Internship here if you are trying independently. Its better to ask the college / school for some directions or if they have some arrangements with some companies. My uni arranged it for us, and we had to pay them for it. Also it helps if you know someone in HR or try for internship where the parents/relatives work, in case they need an extra hand. We students alternatively tried emailing the HR execs of various companies (of interest) requesting them for internship. If you are lucky you will get a response. Did your uni organise the visa too? Interested to know what you paid them for. My uni is based in Dubai, so no visa arrangements were required. But internship was part of our curriculum and we were graded for it. We had to pay bcoz we had to get graded / for professors to monitor and mentor us -_-

I think it affects the gratuity you pay your employees: Limited Contract - If the employee leaves before the contract ends, you don't pay gratuity Unlimited Contract - The employee can leave anytime since there is no time frame for the contract to end, so you have to pay gratuity no matter what. Im not sure if this is according to UAE labor law though, but it is followed in my company.

Do you know the gender of the baby? Accessorize with pink or blue! I feel like adding something blue with everything i wear these days ever since i found out! Im expecting my 1st and am 5months too! :) But i love all the other suggestions too - coral, pastels, gold, turquoise! edited by ajfa on 09/04/2014 I don't suggest going for all blues or pinks depending on the gender of the baby, especially if you plan to have more children and plan to reuse some items. I believe you should have a range of colors for those items that can be reused for a future baby who might be a different gender. That way you won't be pressed for replacing such items simply because they are the wrong color! So you never wear pink or blue otherwise?

I think they are all upset with the rising rent and general increase in various costs courtesy "Expo2020". I was so surprised to find all the take-away places that i order food from had increased prices overnight. Also, as a regular customer i get charged nominally for tailoring services, but i hv seen the same tailor mention double the charges in front of me to new customers, its ridiculous!

Yes, I was going to suggest Al Manar Quran Study Center too. They have weekend classes for kids I suppose. Growing up in Dubai, most of the kids in my neighborhood including myself were tutored by the Muezzin of our local Mosque at the Mosque itself. Some Muezzins would come to 1 particular house to tutor kids in that particular bldg/locality. Im not sure how its done these days.

I have seen the silver foil cakeboards in Al Kabayl Discount Center in Muraggabat St. for very cheap - like 5 boards for 20dhs or something. And they come in many sizes. Daiso has cardboard cake carry boxes. Im not sure of the size though. Also, you can get plastic cake box with lid from Home Center - but not the disposable kind. Im a foodie, so I went for a food related meetup group event, it was interesting to note that most of the people who came were relatively new in Dubai who were probably looking to make friends & I could already see some people hit it off! There's something called Momos, which is the Nepalese version of dimsum. There is a place called Yalla Momos in Karama that have vegan momos on their menu. Maybe you can do a take away from there and try it? http://www.zomato.com/dubai/yalla-momos-al-karama/menu#tabtop http://www.zomato.com/dubai/yalla-momos-al-karama/photos#tabtop Most of the other restaurants have standard dimsums that come in lots of 3. Though I thoroughly enjoyed Ping Pong's all-you-can-eat on fridays (i love chicken & shrimps).
