In academia it is higher: people in the higher administration are mid seventies and still getting residency visas . Some faculties are late sixty.

Get hold of FF and ask if they can arrange a reduced fee for you. If I was in DXB I would chip in, but I would also not be beyond begging nudge nudge....LOL Great will try that.. Thanks,

Hi AS, Get hold of Nad al Sheba and ask them for a bit of advice. Tell them about your stray and that he only visits at night. Sounds like he has been bitten and now has an abcess. They will I am sure give you sound advice. Hopefully he is chipped. I did call the Nad Al Sheba Hospital (sorry got confused as I found their number on Safa Vets's website...) They said if I come at night, it'll cost 550 for emergency fee + approx 500 for the procedure (sedation if necessary and stitching). It's a crazy price to pay on a stray cat....

The cat is still around and now his wound has become severely infected! It's oozing slot of puss :( the problem is he only appears in the evenings and I can't keep him during the day... Can anyone recommend a vet that's open at night? I really want to have that wound cleaned up ASAP! Edited to add:I called Safa Vets who have charged me over 1000 dhs to have that cat checked! It's a bit steep especially that he's not even my cat :s will anyone do this for free or at least for a smaller fee?! edited by amandashaks on 18/02/2012

Not sure if Sportsfit is the same as Fitness360 but they're also at Arabian Center. The membership cost per month is only 250 dhs :)

After trying so many products (I have extremely sensitive skin), I've settled for Cetaphil (cleanser) and Olay (in a tub with a light golden/yellowish small tub) with SPF. It doesn't cost an arm and a leg and works perfectly for me :)

my husband has bad dermatitis and used to suffer from such badly chapped lips that they used to swell and bleed, he used to have to eat through a straw because of it (as a teen). Glysolid is the only thing that helped him. Not sure if you can get it here though. Yes, you can find Glysolid at Carrefour here (not sure if it's available anywhere else). It's a red metal tub and comes in different sizes.

I've got some left over shampoo and conditioner (I think) that I used when I did keratine. Not sure about the Sodium Chloride, I will check that when I get home. I don't mind giving you what I've got until you manage to find some. It's going to be binned anyway so someone might as well make use of it :)

What I would do is instead of stacking boxes, I would get one medium sized box (can be found at Daiso), get some pretty cloth to stuff the box with and then put a bunch of little gifts inside (chocolates, his & hers perfume, recipes, a scarf like the others have suggested). You can then buy a nice big ribbon to wrap the box and maybe stick a card on the box with the person's name and a little message :)

A friend of mine got a call today from Al Wasl Hospital to donate blood. Unfortunately, she is unable to do that as she is on medication... They need blood for Thalassemia patients (this includes children too). They need donation of blood group O+. If you would like to donate you can call the hospital on 04-2194050 or visit the hospital between 7 am and 6 pm. Please pass this on to your family and friends; it may save a life :)

I have a couple of Emirati friends and colleagues at work. They're extremely nice people and cannot say anything bad about them. Remember you will always have good and bad people, no matter what country they're from. The Emirati population is very small here so interacting with them is not as easy and you would think but it is possible :)

I'm afraid I cannot disagree more with the previous post. I would not send my kids to university in the UAE - they all are run for profit (and not for quality of teaching), they are small so students do not have the chance to meet a lot of lecturers and professors and the level is very low. Companies know all of these and nothing will look better in a CV than a degree in the UK or EEUU. Also the way that the society is structured in the UAE doesn't allow students to mature. I would prefer my children to go to a city in the UK to study and face the reality of life. Children are generally overprotected and spoiled here, and even if your children aren't, they will be surrounded by others who are so the sooner they leave the UAE the better for them. You are right that they would get more exposure to the outside world etc but it really does depend on where your children want to be. Would they like to live in the UAE after university or live abroad? I just see at work that a lot of the new hires (specifically the fresh Graduates), most come from local hires (especially AUS). Some of the questions I was asked in my interview had a lot to do with living in the UAE and how much I know about it... I also agree with you that the quality of education may be lower here but don't paint all universities here with the same brush. Yes, there are some which offer a low level of education but you do also have others which are in par with a lot of institutions abroad. I have friends and know of people who finished their undergraduate degrees in AUS and went on to some of the best post graduate universities in Europe but they were outstanding students too. You have some of the very good universities with branches in the UAE so you don't have to travel abroad to get an education anymore. It's much easier to do so from here now... Edited to add that not all students here are spoilt. I worked during my 4 years of studies and so did a lot of students - we had part time jobs because mommy and daddy did not always have the money to throw at us when we wanted :) edited by amandashaks on 12/11/2011

There is no doubt that they are very talented but I can't love it with them being kids. Salsa is an adult's dance because it has some sexual moves in there - I just can't digest it being kids dancing like this...

HUGE friends fan here! My favorite episode is the one with the new years resolutions and Ross's is to do a new thing everyday so he wears leather pants on a date. He goes to the bathroom at the girl's house and couldn't get them back on HAHAAHHAHAHAHA! I die of laughter everytime! And also the episode where Ross learns to play the bagpipes for Chandler and Monica's wedding - priceless! You all have to watch the bloopers on youtube! Let me get you started.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljR-K5ZbdB8

I've studied at the American University of Sharjah and I think it is very good overall. If your child is looking to stay here for the long term (ie stay here to work for a couple of years after university) then to study here is the best. Employers know the universities here and I guess would rather hire undergrads from local universities (they know the market better etc). It also really depends on what your child wants to study because a lot of the specializations are not available here. Of course, how much you are willing to pay also plays a role... All the best! :)

I don't work crazy long hours (thank God!) but I do have friends who work in media (advertising, PR etc) and they work absolutely crazy insane inhumane hours. Some have been at work till 2 or 3 in the morning and back at work by 8 or 9 again... It can sometimes go on for days on end and they also work weekends most of the time. I don't know if this is the norm with the small, more local companies but this is certainly the norm with the larger ones.

I'm doing my MBA at Heriot-Watt. It's only my first course - so far so good! They've just moved into a new campus which is great as well. For me, it was the best given the tuition fees. There are better like CASS Business School and London Business School but way out of my budget! Do a quick search on here for the MBA; I started a thread a while ago asking for what are the best schools etc which might be of help to you. Good luck :)

We were here when irak invaded Kuwait. A lot of expats left some for good in the summer of the invasion, others were evacuated by their embassies. We decided to stay and it was OK. We were here also during the entire war between Iran and irak.
