Hey All We just arrived in Doha 3 weeks ago and we also used Dynamic International!! If you need a contact number for then we can give you the contact details for them. We are expecting the container to arrive end of the month. I can let you know how it all goes. In regards to the whole packing etc, 3 guys came and looked around and everyone split work and started packing everything quite quickly. They cane around 8am and were out by 12!!! We have shipped half a container as no furniture Sorry pressed enter by mistake lol! It cost us under £2500 and we have paid for a door to door service. Will let you know how the unpacking and customs goes at this end. In the mean time if you need their contact details I can send you the guys name and number who dealt with ours. Don't stress.. You will get there in the end! Good luck with everything :)

Hi Oz4, thanks you some good points you raised there. especially the food. My son goes to a montoserr in the UK and there provide great food and I almost take that for granted sometimes when I hear about food quality from some of our friends..... thanks for your input :)

Hi Dottymum1 - My husband has called Sherborne several times however he keeps getting told that the child has to turn 5 between the sept-aug in the academic year. My son is 3 year + 2 months at the moment and we asked about academic year sept 2013 and they told his that he should apply for sept 2014. I believe (from their website and after speaking to them) Sherborne don’t have a Pre-school and start at Reception so the child is turns 5 during the academic year. When you say you have you know someone with a 3 year old in there? Do you know what class they are in? reception? Hi swizzle stix – was your little one 4 already during the academic year i.e in sept 2012?. My son turns 4 in november 2013 and therefore they told my husband he can join in Sept 2014! Thanks for all your help

Hi Cal_Hob Thanks for your reply. Yes I believe kindergarten is a school or from what I have been reading. I am from the UK and my little one currently attends a Montessori. I believe the kindergarten set up is the same as preschool and it prepares the child in the environment prior to starting school i.e reception…..I think…. Take a look at the education section of this website and there is CESK and The English kindergarten to name a couple.

Many thanks for your reply BEDH. We have lined up one assessments and most of the other ones seem full. Must say rather surprised as my husband got there 1st week in Jan so thought the timing was okay for schools. Although whether the schools look at how long the family has been in doha etc I am not sure as I noticed you have been there for a few months now. As you heard last week I think we may have missed to the boat for DC as I was expecting to hear last week too however I am told by DC that I will hear by the end of the month for an assessment in 1st week in Feb. Goodluck with your assessments

Hi Cal-Hob. Congrats in getting your little one in ACS. I believe your little one will start at ACS in Sept and you are looking at preschool for him to go from now to Sept? is that right? Have you considered any of the kindergardens or are you only looking at pre-schools within the school environment? my son is 3 years old and on waiting lists as most schools. we applied a while ago but my husband only arrived few weeks ago. he is looking at kindergardens while on the waiting list for a good school.

Hi BEDH do you mind if I ask whether your child is attending the assessment for pre-school or reception. I keep getting told that I will know by the end of the month if my son is asked to attend an assessment however it seems like the emails have already been sent out? Did you receive yours a while back?

It's really not impossible to get a school place. It's probably close to impossible to get a school place on the A-list (although I know someone who got his 3 year old into DESS, he just planned it so he applied at the right time (i.e. 12.01 on New Years Day!) and flew her out for an interview). You will get a primary school place if your children are fluent in English - it just may not be in your forever school. If they're not (or you want a language other than English eg French) it may be more difficult. Raahatd, sorry about your bad experience at Newton. Could you specify which one as I think it would be useful - I think they're all run very differently. I have no interest in Newton btw just would help people coming out to know! Lalala if you don't mind, could I please contact you regarding the interview your friends child had at DESS? Hope you don't mind me contacting you like this. You can email me at ami underscore 08 underscore 02 at hotmail dot com. Thanks in advance

Hi Ami, good to see you again on the forum. How are you doing? Are you still planning on coming to Lisbon in February? Seems things over here are moving along more quickly than anticipated. My husband has been in Doha for a little over 2 weeks, also looking into the right compound to move into with kids. Our budget isn`t the largest, unfortunately. If we can´t meet up in Lisbon I`ll see you in Doha shortly. I should be there at the end of February. Take care Hi snowflake Have sent you an email :)

Thank you for your responses Actually hubby saw the 2 bed apartments. Is the noise a problem there? One good thing is that they can remove the furniture if we want to bring our own. A lot of places are only ff. RachelA so did u not find it a very friendly compound? I have two kids and I was hoping where we decided to stay we would meet other families etc?

That really is a coincidence! A very small world! I have 3 year old son and another one on it's way end of the year! My husband will go first and then hopefully we will follow a couple of months after! I do like ikea stuff, but not sure what it will be like once it opens in Doha.... Will it have all the same stuff as the UK etc? And tbh we will be shipping a few things over so thought it would be just easier to ship everything over together? Ausigirl if you don't mind me asking did u ship your stuff from the UK? Who did u use and what was your experience like with them? We have had a few quotes but still not sure how to handle everything. A lot going on at once. Getting a little bit stressed now as need to sort alot out before the second one arrives! :\:

Hi Everyone! We are moving to Doha in the new year from the UK :) My husband will be moving in Jan and me and my two kids will move in March hopefully! We would like to buy our own furniture and ship to Doha - is it easy to find UNFURNISHED apartments? Ideally we would prefer to live in an apartment within a compound. I did contact one of the agents today but probably shouldn't expect a response straight away! We don't want something too big... a two bed flat.. maybe in the budget of 10/12K. We have seen apartments within compounds being advertised on websites but most of these come fully furnished? Has anyone seen any apartments in compounds unfurnished? We will be applying to DESS for my 3 year old in sept 2013. Can anyone recommened any compounds with apartments that my husband can look at to ensure a close commute for the little one? I did try to search for unfurnished in this forum but didn't get much info for Doha... Thank You all in advance xx

Thanks for the responses! I will make a note of the shipping companies and contact them. Lala I will have a look on Doha mums and we will email a few places. Thanks for being honest and we actually heard from DESS and they said my son is too young to join DESS. We just thought we would give it a go rather then waiting to arrive in Doha and then applying for it. Tbh our budget is around 10-11k for housing and I always thought apartments would be easier but maybe I am wrong. I highly doubt we can get a villa for that price. I guess I am trying to make it a 'home' much faster than I should then. Will look from the net... And maybe contact estate agents Thanks everyone x

:) Hi Everyone!! @amy77 I am reading this message during my lunch break, and considering the fact that we will be in the same situation as Claire soon, its such a great feeling to have someone with such a positive attitude :) and all of you are such a great help that its unbelievable. It just reminds me again and again why this move is only for the best for our loved ones and for ourselves!! We are still waiting for the contract but have been doing some research in housing. I feel that for us for now an apartment will be good enough (I have mostly lived in one) and its not to say that we can never change after a year or so? or is this a headache? do you remember which shipping company you used when moving all your stuff. We have the same idea, we want to buy everything from here and ship it all there. DH company gives approx 620KG air frieght but i think they are OK about paying the volume of 620KGS in a container. We applied to DESS this week so fingers crossed. LALA does your 2 year old attend a nursery? I would like my son to attend one after we get there, do you have any recommendations? :)

I thought I would post after a couple of conversations I have had about WB-RL traffic recently...I spoke to 2 Brits who make this commute later in the a.m. (after 7:30) and they said it's not so bad, then my American friend who has been doing the longest and is on a Shell contractor contract said that she is REQUIRED to ride the company bus to RL everyday because her contract says so (as do Shell employees apparently) as the companies decided that it was TOO dangerous for employees to be driving out there each day so they are required to take the company coach :( Thanks for the info! Sounds like it will be tuff for hubby! He has the coach as an option as well so we will have to see how to work it out. Thank you so much for asking around! It helps a lot. Xx

Hi lala! Thanks for your response! My son will be 3 in November 2012, so not quite sure if he will be able to get into DESS (if we get the space) by November 2012 or do we have to wait until 2013? Not quite sure how it works in Qatar? hope I'm making sense :) Regarding film, I do have experience! Stayed with the company for nearly two until I realized that I didn't wanted to be treated like a runner anymore and actually needed to earn some money. But again I highly doubt that in Doha they would give a production job on a part-time basis... But we never know what opportunities can come up! Hope everyone doesn't mind me asking, but my husband was told that he will have to go on a probation period, and the company has said that only once he passes this will his family be able to come over. Does everyone have to go through this, or can we (the family) stay there on a visiting visa or something? We are still in the UK but did u ladies visit Doha before actually moving? I know its upto each individual but did it help to get 'used' to things there? again too many questions! :)

It is quite difficult to get into a school in Doha even though there are lots of schools. DESS is one of the more popular schools here and there is a waiting list. I would suggest emailing the school to see if there are vacancies. You can then decide to either put your child on the waiting list or choose another school. The Registrar at DESS is Mrs May Nepia. We are on the waiting list for DESS and it does not look hopeful for this academic year. Another girl in my daughter's class finally received a place after a year wait! Good Luck! Thank you! I will email the school and ask about the waiting list etc. I do hope DESS works out for you guys!! x :)

there's Al Jazeera (English, Arabic, documentary, Kids, Sports) Also there is the Doha film institute and TriBeCa film festival. If those aren't quite what you're thinking of, they'd at least be a place to start. Thank You!! sounds like a good starting point :) xx

Thank you both for your response. I think we will be considering west bay if we take on the offer. The thought of driving there is already worrying me :) but just like everything else that will be a good challenge to overcome :) I will have a look at QPWN. Does anyone know of any film or tv production companies in Doha? I had a look on the net and I think there is only one around, DTM media? I have studied film and production so was just wondering if it is as hard as it is in London to get into! I am sure I will have more questions but thank you again for the responses. :)
