I would also recommend looking at ACS too, my children (grade 5 and 9) are very happy there and the teachers we have had so far are excellent. They also are very responsive in listening to parents. There is a good mix of nationalities in the classes which we like and coming from the UK my children haven't had any problem adapting to the new curriculum. Hope this helps

it was OK for us as the school had not been open for very long at that stage, not sure what its like for places now though I'm afraid.

We've been here for over a year and very happy with ACS, lower and high school. We came from UK and they have adjusted no problem! Would certainly recommend having a look there too. Good luck

I went to one of the tailors that was recommended on the recent thread - was very pleased, just had some trousers shortened. Looking forward to hearing more about the one who comes to you though. I went to Century Tailors and the details are on that previous thread.

I would recommend the classes at the Radisson Blu (Ramada). The Cabana Club there has all the details and there are classes for your daughter's age group. My daughter attends ballet and jazz and loves it.

No horror stories from us, we're delighted with ACS for our children. We had the opportunity to change to DESS but opted to stay with ACS.

Hi there My children are very happy in the Middle School at ACS, there is a great atmosphere at the school and the fact that it has doubled in size since last year is a great sign. Its very international with a decent amount of English speakers and this seems to have increased this term, but I'm not certain on that. Teachers are very approachable and open to feedback which I have never encountered to such a degree previously in the UK.

There are dance classes held at the Ramada, go to the Cabana Club for details and you can definitely buy the dance gear from the teacher.

lots of people travel from this area to ACS and as long as you leave in good time doesn't take more than 20 minutes, sometimes less, depending on the day! We find its a good position to get to everything we need i.e. school/shops/work/sports.

Megamart definitely DO sell Langdale's extract of vanilla, the one with natural ingredients (and the other stuff hush hush!!). Love this ingredient for baking and was pleasantly surprised to see it here. Seems to be plenty of availability of tins and other equipment as the other ladies have said below. I would also bring as many toys as you can.

We all arrived together although quite a few people do seem to have arrived after their spouse. It was our preference to do it all together!

I'd bring as much as you can with you re. the towels etc. as you may not want to pay the mark up if you are aware of UK prices. Aramex is great, really easy, and stuff from the UK only takes around 7 days. They update you with texts all the time which makes the time between placing the order and its arrival seem even quicker.

another thing I thought of is that strangely even your old furniture seems to look nice when you get it here!! I ended up bringing some furniture I didn't want anymore but ran out of time to discard and now its in Doha I quite like it.

You could have a look at the recent "Mother's Day in Doha" article in Time Out Doha (online) as I've just checked and it mentions quite a few suitable venues for a special high tea.

I would also say to bring everything! We brought everything but still found we had to buy more furniture to fill up the villa as its much bigger than our house in the UK. Its very time consuming and you'd almost be better putting that energy into settling in, finding schools, getting used to the roads etc. We ended up spending alot of money for a few decent pieces. Its really hard to imagine how limited your choices are until you get here. Good luck!

I was in the same predicament, but opted for ACS for my children and have been really pleased with it. They seem to be really focused on the children and so far the quality of teaching seems high. What I really like is that there is a good, positive feel about the place and it feels like a good time to be joining a brand new school. I have never been to a school where teachers are so open to talk to parents about progress and how your child is doing. Btw I don't live on the doorstep but have 10 - 20 mins drive depending on whether we leave early enough!!

agree the restaurants there seem great. We've done a brunch at crossroads kitchen and had a meal at the NY Steakhouse. Agree that the steakhouse is pricey but we really enjoyed it and the food and service were great.

just wondered where the New House Complex is as I'm desperate to top up my crockery and haven't seen the quantities I require anywhere. Thanks sorry - just saw this has been asked previously but any more directions would be good edited by amos on 24/04/2012
