We told some friends we were looking for a bigger car, and they knew someone who was selling theirs, so we bought that one. It was QR50k, a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder. We are really happy with it. As with all 3 cars we have bought since we arrived, we took it to a place called 'German Auto Specialist Center' on the Salwa Road and they gave it a thorough once-over before we agreed to buy it (have been to others offering the same service, but this one is absolutely the best - they identified everything that needed doing). The Pathfinder has aircon in the back - it's one of the reasons we bought it, as we have a dog and she was getting dangerously hot in the back of the car in the summer. You can control the flow and temperature of the rear air separately from the front of the car so it's very controllable and if I had a baby, I don't think I would consider a car without it. It's a beast, but nice to drive and has a lot of grunt, which is essential for coping with the roundabouts over here.

I know for a fact that Al Ahli have recently employed a Canadian chiropractor, because I am friends with him! But I don't think they've finished sorting out all his paperwork yet.....worth trying though.

Thanks Joos :) So, the falcon bit is the separate complex of buildings across the street, right? So are the camping shops actually inside that complex? I know where the fishing/SCUBA diving shop is - is that in the right area?

Fail :( That Al Muthana complex in the photo has only restaurants and offices in it, and there was definitely no camping shop there. So I tried to move my car round the corner to the neighbouring complex which has Starbucks and the Hummer garage in it, but as usual there, I couldn't find a parking space for love nor money and I gave up. I could only see electrical shops there anyway. (I had the dog in the car and wanted to be able to park close to the shop, just in case you're wondering why I just didn't walk round the corner!).

If it's any consolation (not much I know), your request has been put out there on Twitter by more than one person today, albeit with no replies, but at least the iLoveQatar guy has been trying, and crikey if he can't find the info then it really must be a lost cause ;) If you're keen to go, why don't you just head down towards Sealine anyway and see if you can manage to find it? It's only about an hour's drive so nothing much to lose. Also I don't know if it's much help, but there is a big advertising board up about it in Wakra (just off the 1st roundabout); I've not taken much notice of it, but I can try and scan it a bit more if I pass by there tomorrow if you like? I quite often drive through Wakra on my way to walk the dog.

Have put the word out about this on the 'Dogwalkers in Doha' Facebook page, seems I am fighting a losing battle with some people though who seem to think its ok not to pick up dog poo in certain areas (namely the mangroves).

I really love the Admirals Club at the marina at the Ritz. Lovely outside terrace and great food (you get one freshly cooked to order 'main course' and a buffet for the other courses).

By the way, when you introduce the chicken, start off with just chicken wings as they're non weight bearing bones and therefore easier for the dog to chew. Make sure she knows HOW to chew bones before you give them to her unsupervised - you may have to hold the wing for her to prevent her just swallowing it whole (like mine did when we first started!). Mine is ok now but does tend to gulp if other dogs are around. If she's a small dog, she shouldn't ever have weight bearing bones (ie chicken legs) but if she's bigger she should cope with those just fine. You're not meant to give even bigger dogs the weight bearing bones of larger animals though - stick to things like ribs. Although I do give ours freebies from Megamart occasionally which are big bones - not for meals though, more as something to chew on and suck the bone marrow out of between meals. They last her for days. Stay away from ox tails as well - my dog cracked a tooth on one last week.....

I've tried mine with veg, but she won't touch it either raw or cooked. I'm in the camp that thinks dogs don't really need veg, but I've only been raw feeding for 3 months now do I am still finding my way. She also has a very sensitive tum so I don't think veg would suit her.

PS if she does get sick, it's not the end of the world, dogs throw up, we clean it up, life goes on! She won't get sick though, especially if you keep her to simpler meats such as chicken. Make sure it has bones in it as that helps keep poos firm. Try chicken wings and then you could consider buying whole chickens and chopping them up into appropriate size chunks. Don't worry about organs etc - at this stage you can just feel happy that anything is better than kibble. If you're squeamish, even something like a cracked egg (shell and everything!) or a tin of sardines (rinse the tomato sauce off) would be a nice weekly treat for her and helps preserve joints and gives a glossy coat.

Cooked meat isn't bad, it's just that raw is better as it gives them some chewing and teeth cleaning action. Dogs are a lot more resistant to bacteria than us, they have stronger stomach acid apparently. I gave my dog some out of date and very stinky kidneys last night and she's fine! Raw also keeps them busier for longer at mealtimes, giving better mental stimulation. Just give it a go, you've got nothing to lose. She might not like it but it won't hurt her. Try something simple like chicken wings or even just raw mincemeat. Just don't mix kibble and raw in the same meal - apparently their stomachs can't cope, although the biologist in me doubts this but it's what I've heard. You could just give her a few raw snacks a week, or go half and half (one meal kibble, one meal raw) or whatever feels right for you - there's plenty of dogs survive just fine on Royal Canin anyway so don't beat yourself up if you just keep her on that :) Just have fun with it, see it as an opportunity for you and your dog and don't worry to much about doing it - she's a dog, nothing bad is going to come of it.

I actually think dog owners should ALWAYS pick up their poo, it didn't matter where you are, bag it and take it home! Even at the mangroves (I tie the bag onto my rear windscreen wiper and it survives the journey home). At the beach, don't leave it for the tide or even bury it - if everyone did this the sea water would soon get pretty sh*tty. And even on empty wasteground. Chances are that other dog walkers use it, and even if they don't, it adds to the fly population and doesn't help the already poor reputation of dog ownership in this country. There is a wasteground next to Al Messilah compound where residents are encourage to walk their dogs and it's disgusting - I can't even go there in open toes shoes or at night. People think that 'only' dog walkers go there, I guess, but just because I have dog doesn't mean I want to walk through clouds of flies and your dog's cr*p. Really makes me angry. Oh and if you're too ****** lazy to walk your own dog, make sure your maid knows to pick up the poo (and how to control the thing). Aaaaaarrrrggh. Rant over!

I'm afraid that the only dog foods on sale here are Burgess and Pedigree (in the supermarkets), and Royal Canin and Hills in the vets and pet shops - a limited range due to the limited wholesale imports. Unfortunately they are all full of cheap fillers and none of them are grain free. As a result, our dog is now fed raw - see my blog for details http://escapetoqatar.wordpress.com

I think most apartments here are fully furnished, but I could be wrong. Personally I find the beds over here to be REALLY uncomfortable and I was glad when our own one arrived! Re: IKEA furniture, we bought everything from the Hemnes range because then we could mix and match it among bedrooms, hallways, lounge etc - it worked out really well considering we didn't know what sort of place we'd end up moving into. We still didn't bring enough for the big houses here and ended up driving to Dubai last month to raid IKEA there! We filled a 20ft container and it cost around £4k - this held basically all of our worldly goods plus all the new furniture I'd bought. We went with EVL removals, who actually went bust just before our shipment docked in Doha! As a result, we had to either wait for the agents over here to register as creditors with the company administrator in order to claim the amount they were due off the company to release our container from the port and deliver it within Doha, or pay them directly ourselves what they were owed from EVL. We chose the latter option as we didn't want to wait for months for it to be sorted out. We immediately registered as creditors of the company ourselves and claimed our costs back that way. The moral of this story is, whatever you do, make sure your removals company is part of the BAR scheme - if ours wasn't, we would have been out of pocket, but as it was they were really helpful and supportive of us through all the mess. http://www.bar.co.uk/default.aspx Feel free to read my blog to see what I went through emotionally and practically when I was in the same position as you in 2010! http://escapetoqatar.wordpress.com

She had a right pile of packages in Landmark and they seemed pretty organised about the whole thing. I didn't even have to tell her my customer number - she just asked for my name and then said straight away that my parcel wasn't in without even having to look it up. She was very certain as well that I would have got a text if it had come in. I'd definitely have faith in them to do it again. Depends on how excited I am about getting the package though - in this case I couldn't wait another 24 hours!

I would just like to add, being a bit cynical, don't assume you're actually coming out in February until you have something concrete such as a plane ticket or visa. Also, I would really recommend that you stay back in England for a while until your husband has settled in (and ideally, got through his probation period if he has one - I know one couple who got sent back home at the end of their probation period for literally no apparent reason). He can stay in a serviced apartment in West Bay while he kicks off the house-hunting process. Also, make sure you haggle for the best package you can possibly get - I wish we had done this as my husband's housing allowance doesn't cover our villa and we top it up ourselves from his salary. When we came out, my husband took a serviced apartment in West Bay - he was here 6 weeks before I arrived. I found us a villa relatively quickly and after just 4 weeks or so living in the apartment with him, our container arrived and we moved into our villa. My husband works in West Bay, so we're living in Al Messilah compound, which was basically the nicest compound we could find for the money which was a reasonable commute for him (15-30 minutes depending on traffic). I went to IKEA in England and bought LOADS of flat pack furniture to pack the container with before we came out - I am sooooo glad I did this as the furniture selection out here is **** and the villas are massive enough to 'absorb' a lot of furniture. By the way, semi-furnished out here means, basically, unfurnished - the semi bit refers only to a place having electrical appliances and, bizarrely, aircon units. Life is really good out here, so come out with a positive attitude and you will love it. Some people who come out feeling negative about the move never really seem to settle, so you need to make sure you look at all the good things. It's only a 6.5 hour flight back home, it's a relatively easy lifestyle, nice weather, a great social life and more time to be together as a couple. I'm from the Midlands originally, although never really put down permanent roots anywhere in England - we lived all over the place before we came here! edited by amy77 on 10/01/2012

OK. So I hadn't heard anything by 4pm and I thought I would just pop to Landmark to see if it was there. It wasn;t :( She said they normally don't arrive until the next day after the request and that they would SMS me when it came in. I couldn't wait another day as I was too excited about my parcel, so I drove over to the main branch and picked it up there instead! It was only a 10 minute queue and they seem a bit more organised than last time I went - I moaned about it on Twitter at the time and their marketing guys were surprisingly good about picking up on my Twitter complaints.

I go to Bliss at the W Hotel for waxing - they do hot waxing on the bikini line, which is much less painful than the strips (it dries hard and then the therapist pulls it off with her fingers - it doesn't stick to the skin at all so there's less pain). I haven't used them for threading, as they never seem to have a threader available at the same time as a waxer, but I tried Nails in Landmark for threading and they were ****. Bliss also has a GREAT pedicure/manicure lounge - expensive but a nice experience.

OK well, she was quite hard to understand as the line kept breaking up, but she said she will put in the request for it to be transferred to Landmark and that they would try and do it today, but it seems like she has to request it as it depends on space availability. I did emphasise that I would pick it up today which seemed to help.

I had a shipment stopped last week (flammable) and they phoned and emailed me while holding it in the UK office. They gave me the choice of forwarding it on to another UK address, or returning to sender. I chose to have it forwarded to my Mum's house and I had to pay QR55 for this (just had to pop into the Aramex booth in Landmark to pay my bill).

I am soooo confused about what to do, as I have heard nothing but bad reports about Dr Sarah's. I even have a friend who used to work there and she has nothing good to say about it either! I have heard that they push you into as much (unnecessary) treatment as possible to extract money from you and looking at joos' bill that would certainly seem to be the case..... Joos did you already need the filling repair and wisdom teeth removal, or was it suggested at the consultation at Dr. Sarah's?

My friend had a really positive birth (VBAC) at Hamad recently - she said it was much better than her other birth at Al Ahli. She couldn't take her husband in, but she had a friend there instead and said it was actually better than having him there! If you are keen on the best NICU then Hamad is your only option really. Some people have bad stories about it, but my friend's experience was 100% positive. I think the private hospitals would rush you and the baby to Hamad anyway in the event of an emergency as it has much better facilities.

The Gap and Banana Republic sales have been quite productive so far for me :) None of the other British shops seem to have started theirs yet, which is a bit weird as they are well underway in England. Apart from BHS which had a sale on before Xmas which had some good bargains. I don't know about Debenhams though, sorry. I'm a bit cynical about this Entertainer Travel book - is it actually worth buying? It's just that I am pretty darn good at hunting out good hotel and flight deals online - can the book really beat them? Do you not have to pay rack rates to qualify for the special offers? Does it really work out as being a good purchase? I am genuinely interested to know, as the bargain-hunter in me will definitely want to buy it if the offers are worth having!

Good point lalala. They do price to get people through their hub. I guess if it was a really good deal, you could do what I suggested and book through Bahrain etc and arrange your own connecting flight to there. 3 flights would be a massive pain in the backside though.

Ive not looked yet, but assuming they have banned bookings made through the Qatar version of the emirates website, you could get around this by logging on to the emirates UK website (using a VPN) and pay using a Uk credit card registered to a uk address. Or USA/whatever. Then just book a FlyDubai flight to get you to Dubai to connect with your discount flight.

To be fair though, all garages I ever dealt with in the UK had to order parts in to repair my previous cars. Its just that in the UK, the supply chain is a bit more efficient - I don't think you can blame the dealers here. I don't know any garage in England which keeps parts in stock - when they need them, they either order them from the manufacturer's UK operations or from a local parts dealer such as Allparts. We have decided to undertake one of the repairs on our Nissan ourselves as my husband is a handy mechanic, and we have ordered the parts off my Uncle who runs a Nissan dealership in England (because he can get them cheaper than we can here). He place the order more than 3 weeks ago and he still hasn't had them in! Also, I don't know if this is related or not in my particular case, but lots of car companies are having supply chain issues at the moment because of the tsunami.

Not much help I know, but we had the same with Nissan - my car went in for a service and repairs and we didn't see it again for more than a week! We just kind of coped really - I drove hubby to work in the mornings so that I had a car while he was at work. Right now, my husband's Landrover is in for repairs and they can't get the relevant spare part for another 6 weeks! Really annoying, as we have guests too and we can't do anything with them unless we use taxis. I guess being such a small country, it's kind of understandable that they don't have every spare part in stock. We haven't really argued much with the garages in both instances, as it wouldn't have changed anything. We have good relationships with the service managers for both cars so we knew they weren't trying to pull a fast one or anything.
