It's about as good as a commute as you can hope for in Qatar, about 15-30 mins depending on time of day and month. The only better (closer) options would be West Bay Lagoon, or one of the towers in West Bay itself.

The closest towers are numbers 3, 4 and 5, but they're not ready yet (agent I spoke to said they been delayed again after supposedly being ready to market in August). Number 11 (Bilal Pearl Suites) is probably the closest finished tower, but I haven't heard good things about it. They are desperate to get rid of apartments in tower 18, but I haven't liked any of the ones I've seen there. Towers 22 & 23 still have some availabilty and the finish is lovely - worth the extra walk in my opinion (you can't walk ANYWHERE in this country between May and September anyway unless you are some kind of masochist!). Contact Property Hunter as they seem to have the most on VB.

Hi, apart from the fact that I can't believe the cheek of your sons in asking you to source all this stuff(?!) I think can help. I have twins, who are about to outgrow most of the items you need. Plus we are away at Christmas, so won't need them anyway. We go on the 18th December so you can have them just before that. If you know tamieg1 in real life, she is one of my friends and will be able to put you in touch with me. I'm not sure I can help with travel cots though; we have two but they're in England at the moment. We have the LittleLife Arc2 which are super light and small (they can be carried as hand luggage) so maybe you could ask your cheeky sons to buy some in England and bring them with them! I also can't help with the Jumperoo, I can't believe they've asked for this as it's hardly an essential! Anyway let me know via Tamie if I can help with the other stuff :)

I'm an environmental scientist and so is my good friend who has lived here for years. She has done some freelance work, but she has a huge network of high-level contacts because her family have lived in Doha for decades, which is how she has managed to pull it off. It is possible to get freelance work but it would take a few years to get the right contacts in place to do so, as it's not as common as it is back home and, as everything in Qatar, it is highly nepotistic! Myself, I could probably get some part time, flexible work through that friend, if I wanted to, but I haven't pushed it yet as I am busy with baby twins! I have also been offered short term and temporary contracts through another friend I made dog-walking (through her I ended up doing some voluntary work and that led to me making some contacts who I can hassle for work as and when I want to). Like everything here,it's all about meeting the right people and sometimes that just happens by chance and you can't really force it. Nothing like this is ever advertised - it's all word of mouth. It is possible.....but don't count on it, basically.

To be honest, none of the doctors here really 'get' PCOS. They (due to local culture) are only interested in getting you pregnant. Dr Sonia did tests on me, but she never really discussed the results with me, she just went into getting me pregnant mode. It was quite a roller coaster really, I went along for the ride, but if I hadn't wanted to get pregnant I doubt she would have been much use because (a) she is obsessed with getting her clients pregnant and (b) she is not very communicative unless you bombard her with questions. I'm not even sure I have PCOS any more.....the blood results I got from Dr Sonia seemed to suggest something else, although that was only from doing my own research, it was nothing she told me. I went to Dr Mandy at the Feto Maternal center yesterday, and I loved her. I only went for a routine smear test, but we ended up discussing general health matters and I mentioned my PCOS to her (she was very thorough in trying to get a full history from me about all sorts of issues). I felt like she really listened, but she did the classic doctor thing of doing an ultrasound to scan for cysts.....now if you've read the Collette Harris books you will know that PCOS is a set of symptoms, rather than a specific problem with cysts, so this isn't really a very helpful way of looking at it. It is more a case of doing bloods and building up a wider picture. But Dr Mandy didn't seem all that interested after my scan looked OK (I had hardly any cysts).....after all I don't want to get pregnant right now, and she seems to be fairly typical of doctors in only really thinking of it as a problem if you are trying to conceive. Even in the Uk you struggle to find doctors who care about PCOS, and if they do very few seem to be interested in the more holistic way of looking at it in relation to insulin etc. So, over here, I think the best course of action is to read all of Collette Harris's books and manage it yourself through diet and supplements. But if you want to see a doctor, I would go and see both Dr Sonia and Dr Mandy and see who you think is best (I suspect it will be the latter).

Dogs - it's not the best life for them here but they do get used to it. I can't wait to take my Doha-bred dog back to England one day though, and show her grass and trees and squirrels! I suggest you join the Facebook groups 'Dogs in Doha', and 'Dogwalkers in Doha' to get more of an idea. Also check out my blog http://dogblogqatar.com Re driving, a car is ABSOLUTELY essential here. Driving isn't much fun, but it's tolerable. Having a dog means that I do quite a lot of longer journeys and it's great to have the incentive and freedom to leave the city. Having a dog, I find having a bit 4WD with rear aircon to be essential! Honestly our life revolves around our dog WAY too much :D Good luck :)

Yes it's separate membership, so you can join any time and it's also a lot cheaper than regular membership. You can then do aqua natal, prenatal fitness, prenatal yoga and general swimming. Only thing is, you have to take a doctor's note in order to join and it's technically only available to women over 12 weeks of pregnancy (you could probably blag that though). I haven't been to any of the classes yet, but I sometimes go swimming - only thing is the pool is a bit warm by my standards (am a serious swimmer and feeling the heat at the moment too!).

Kitsune, you probably know all this already I am sure.....but starting migraines at 12 and having a gap in them whilst pregnant suggests some hormonal role? (Sorry, I know you probably already thought of this, but just trying to help). There is some officially named condition where the migraines are linked to the menstrual cycle - I can't remember the name, but I heard of it because my cousin has an extreme version which resulted in seizures and it took her years to get a diagnosis. In the end, she undertook the difficult to decision to have a hysterectomy and has been better ever since. I only suggest it because maybe a more specialist endocrinologist type doc might help. Have you tried that expatdoctormum person who has recently started practising here and posts on Doha Mums?

I've been meaning to join the BSAC club since I came to Doha 18 months ago, but haven't got round to it yet! Unfortunately, I'm heffalumping pregnant at the moment, so diving is out for me for a long time, but I would still like to join the club if you want to buddy me to a meeting. It's a BSAC club ie British Sub Aqua Club - they will accept PADI divers but you might have to do a short course to transfer to the BSAC system. I might be biased, but I consider BSAC to be infinitely better than PADI anyway (for a start, once you are a club member, all training is free and the qualifications are recognised world wide) plus I prefer to dive within the club system as its safer and it generally works out cheaper with access to club equipment etc. The BSAC club has its own club house near the airport and I think they meet on Tuesday nights. I've been diving for years and was an Assistant Instructor, but there has been such a long hiatus in my diving career that I need/want to start my qualifications again from scratch!

I'm quite fussy about t-shirt quality and I have been really surprised by the quality and wash ability of the H&M ones. They are better than Gap and fit my lanky body well. They're not as stylish as my Banana Republic ones, but they are good as wardrobe basics. I would also try somewhere like Massimo Dutti as their basics are well made.

There used to be one on the approach road, but I've not seen it for ages. As to the ones patrolling the 40mph limits around the perimeter, I've never seen any there BUT I suspect they might be using their mobile cameras - these are almost impossible to spot until its too late - they are very small, very low and mounted on a little camera tripod. Nothing like the mobile 'scamera' vans used in Britain which are easy to spot! They are very crafty about hiding them after hedges and behind bollards. A man usually sits in an unmarked Landcruiser nearby, but only just within sight of the camera. I kept getting done by them on F-ring until I worked out what the new speed limits were and what the cameras looked like.

What do you mean exactly? I've been driving on it for 18 months, but it keeps getting extended. The oldest bit is the bit in front of the Sharq/Mariott. The newest bit is the Barwa Village junction, but it looks like they have plans to extend it even further, all the way into Wakra. I've had loads of speeding tickets along there - they used to have sneaky hidden mobile cameras, but as of last week they have new fixed position average speed cameras, which are thankfully much easier to spot!

I live on Al Messilah compound and the houses here have fitted carpets on the stairs and upstairs. It's lovely as it makes it feel more homely and it's on of the reasons we chose this house. The management of this compound do allow you to also make your own changes (eg laying wooden floors) but they automatically become the compound property if you do (ie you can't rip them out and sell them on afterwards).

Not really Lalala - speaking with my Institute of Advanced Motorists hat on (although they would probably revoke my membership if they saw me driving over here....) the correct procedure in England is to gradually move towards the outside of roundabout as you progress towards your exit. In theory this works because the only people on the outside of you are leaving the roundabout before you, but you don't have right of way - the 'correct' thing to do if another vehicle is preventing your exit is to go around the roundabout and try again. I do kind of adopt the same technique here, to be honest, it just makes life easier.

Marycatherine am I right in thinking that in that particular situation, you have right of way anyway? (In this country, and I believe in Canada - this wouldn't apply in England). MoI did a tweet about it last week and said there was a QR500 fine for anyone not giving way to someone on the inside of the roundabout (ha!).

The best one is the roundabout where you come out of Al Messilah compound (where D-ring meets Al Rayyan road) and the buggers in the right-hand lane simply CANNOT stay in the right hand lane once they get onto the roundabout. They HAVE to cut across into the middle lane, regardless. And then they get off at the next exit anyway. WHY?!! There must be some logic to it, because they all do it, but I can not for the life of me figure out why!

They never even opened our container, full stop, let alone inspect our CDs. It's a possibility, but it's very unlikely - the port is operating at well over capacity and they're under a lot of pressure to turn containers round quickly. To be honest, I don't know what they would find offensive anyway - you can buy Western DVDs with ***/violence in quite easily in high street shops here.

Er...no not even a twin bed usually. Some are so small that the maid would be expected to roll her bed up during the day :( One of the reasons we wouldn't have a live in maid is because I've hardly ever seen a villa which has a room which I would consider humane enough for a maid..... Our friend has a lovely stand-alone villa where the maid has her own separate cottage with separate entrance, but that isn't the norm, especially on compounds.

Thanks. Some interesting thoughts! So many people seem to go away for such a long time and it wasn't until I actually gave some serous thought to doing the same thing that I started to wonder what the heck people do with themselves for so long! I have got a romantic idea of renting out a gite in France, or a log cabin in England, just me and the dog and getting some writing done and seeing people as and when. But actually I think in reality this would be quite lonely! Last year I did Swimtrek.com (as I do every year) but this year it feels weird as I don't have any of my own savings any more and it's quite an expensive holiday to spend our joint money on when I'm not earning myself. Also we are TTC so I can't plan too much and if we were lucky enough to have a baby I guess that would change everything again. I guess really my main motivation to go away for the summer is having the dog - now she is an adult and needing good, long walks every day, it makes summer extra miserable and I do harbour a ridiculous fantasy of seeing her running free in a green field chasing rabbits!!!! edited by amy77 on 07/05/2012

Thanks all and sorry for not listening to your attempts to calm me down! It all turned out, as predicted by DebK, to be a big misunderstanding. There was some complaint lodged about a car with my registration number at 130am on a Saturday morning - thankfully it was a day we weren't even in the country. We had a had time persuading them that our car was safely locked away with nobody else having access to it, but eventually they believed us (I think after checking our ID numbers to check we were out of the country). I don't know what would have happened had we not been out of the country, as they didn't seem very willing to accept that nobody from our household was driving the car at the time.

Thanks. You know, the bullying doesn't normally bother me - I am a confident driver, I take it in my stride. I sometimes don't back down if they try and bully me out of the way or barge in front of me - I suspect that's what happened here and it's got someone's goat. I can't think of any incidents which stand out, but who knows. I wasn't taking any prisoners last week when I had to bomb up and down to Pampered Pets twice in 2 hours - it was probably that day, as if anyone tried to cut me up or get in front of me, I didn't let them as I was in too much of a hurry and too stressed. I didn't lose my rag with anyone though, or shout at anyone, or make any gestures, so if that's what I am being accused of I know it will be all lies. I will report back so that other people can learn from this. One thing is for sure though, if the police really do act on complaints against other drivers, I am going to start reporting every bullying incident from now on, instead of just letting it all wash over me like I normally do.

Sorry, I was in tears when I wrote my last post and feeling a bit emotional - we have a lot going on right now and this is the last straw. I am bullied most days, by people pushing in front of me, flashing lights at me and generally cutting me up - that's my experience and it occurs on a daily basis. The thread which really sticks in my mind was in the last couple of months and it was detailing a number of incidents of similar nature, including one member of the forum who was bullied on the Al Khor road and ended up in front of a judge after almost spending a weekend in jail. That's why I'm so worried. There were a few stories on that thread, mostly from women who had been wrongly accused of making verbal gestures and as it was their word against a local's, they had to suck it up and plead humility to be let off. That's why I'm worried. I haven't done anything wrong (I have been extra careful since *that* thread) and yet here I am being subject to a police investigation. It's not very nice and I really don't need it this week of all weeks.

Thanks ladies. I'm still worried. Hubby still thinks I've been naughty, so I daren't bring it up with him again as I am trying not to think about it too much - therefore we haven't checked the Metrash website yet. It's not number plates. We thought it might be a mis-reported accident, as we also had an email from our insurance company yesterday about hire car usage, but it turned out to just be coincidence as it was only a courtesy email they occasionally send out to all customers. So we are defo in trouble with the police for something :( One possibility is that we haven't paid off some speeding fines yet which are a few months old. I hope it's that. The other is that I was driving around like a loon on Wednesday in a total panic - I took the dog to pampered pets, then forgot her tick treatments. So had to go all the way back to Parkview, who didnt have any in stock, and then QVC before making a mad dash back to pampered pets in less than 20 minutes before they closed. I don't remember any specific incidents, but I did speed a lot up the shamal road. I hate this. It's ruined our holiday and it's such bad timing as my husband is having surgery as soon as we get back.

I gave a talk there last week and can confirm that the school is expanding VERY rapidly, with at least one or two new campuses under construction. The Qatari who runs it is very passionate (he studied physics at Imperial in London and did his PhD in Manchester Uni) and I also met a very passionate South African science teacher who has been teaching there (along with his wife) for 5 years. I thought it was a lovely school. Most of the kids seemed to be Qatari though - there was only 1 or 2 white faces in the audience. I went to their science fair and it was lovely to see all the Dads getting hands-on with their kids' projects and the standards were very high.

We bought a 2006 Kia Sportage for around QR37000 but we sold it on as we wanted something bigger with rear a/c. I've now got a Nissan Pathfinder, approx 5 yrs old which we paid QR50k for. Both were bought off expats. My husband has a 2008 Landrover Freelander (LR2) which was something like QR80k from a dealer with 3-year warranty. My Nissan is better than his LR though! It copes better with the heat and the desert, but then I drive off-road a lot more than he does - pretty much every day in fact (dog walking!). His LR is just OK in the desert, although it is much nicer to drive for commuting to work.

Oh no, don't say that :( they're doing a big PR campaign to make it seem like it's on schedule and I had totally fallen for it! They put pics up on Facebook last week of the construction progress and everything! AND the countdown clock www.festivalcitydoha.com has been going the right way for ages now (instead of increasing like it was a couple of months ago!). Dammit! With regards to Lagoona Mall, the guy who runs iloveqatar.net who lives in the ZigZag towers tweeted a couple of weeks ago that all of the Lagoona Mall restaurants are due to open by the end of April.
