Can you post on the Dogs in Doha and QAWS Facebook pages? If not, let me know and I will do it. They will need photos, can you take one? There are no foster homes available at the moment, just so you're prepared - you might get stuck with him or have to make a difficult decision about what to do with him.....hopefully his owner will be looking for him though. He actually sounds a bit like Sebastian who was in QAWS, not sure if he ever found a home though.

I bought some about an hour ago in mini Megamart. You might be missing it, as they've re-formulated it to be a lot more concentrated and it's in much smaller bottles, usually on a different shelf now (below where it used to be). It still tastes as good, you just need to be careful not to make it too strong now! The bottles are short and fat.

CC, if you think you have broken a bone (which presumably you do if you want an X-ray) then get yourself to an emergency dept ASAP. You could be doing all sorts of damage to your foot, not to mention the possibility of other complications such as blood clots. Go, now.

I do think it's a bit weird judging others for what they are wearing. BUT the problem is that Qatar is a very conservative country, with Wahabist Islam being the dominant "force", the same as in Saudi. There is already a proportion of the country who are getting increasingly despairing of Western influence and this is starting to show in very real effects such as a restriction on immigration and the recent clampdown on rules and regulations designed to restrict people coming in. HH The Emir is treading a very fine line between progress and conservatism. If people start openly taking the p*ss, it's only going to lead to more anti-Western sentiment and that could have consequences for all of us. For instance, the more common it gets to see scantily dressed women around, the more the covered women in the malls are going to start thinking they need to say something, or worse, spit on us. While I resent the fact that my legs, not previously considered sexy anywhere else in the world, have suddenly taken on some kind of new sexual status in Qatar, I also think that people shouldn't openly flout the 'rules'

CC I'm not arguing with you in that 3 years is a **** of a commitment lease-wise! But the way you worded it made it sound like everyone had a massive downer on Doha and couldn't wait to leave, which is why I disagreed with you in that respect :)

Frazzle, sounds like you had a good trip (apart from the agent - unfortunately typical for over here - but at least you have seen enough compounds on your own now to confirm that they aren't worth dealing with). I would completely disagree with CCDoha in that nearly all my friends have or are staying for more than 3 years, BUT I would seriously hesitate to sign a 3 year lease. There is so much that can change here and you don't want to be tied in for any length of time to a housing contract. It could be something serious, like having to leave the country quickly, or you might find out that the compound has an unbearable noise problem, or whatever. In any case, Al Jazi and the Lagoons would be a better location, so if your budget stretches to something there, it would be preferable to Al Rayyan anyway, Re: knowing your way around, the Explorer maps (available in Virgin) are really good. They do a pocket sized city map which I keep in the car, along with bigger country maps.

Yes! Especially since our very own clothing police lady Expatcookie (on here and on Twitter) is leaving! I was in the souk the other day and there were LOADS of in appropriately dressed women. I presume they were all long haulers on stop over, because they were dressed like it was really hot (it wasn't that hot for us hardened desert-dwellers) and a couple were dragging suitcases behind them and they all looked very touristy. I mean, yes you might only be here for a few hours, and this might not be part of your main holiday, and QA might have 'forced' you to stay here for a few hours, but come on! You're in a fecking souk in the middle east! I think I will have a quiet word next time, not with long-term residents, but if I see any stupid tourist types knocking around the souk/corniche again.

I've been there for lunch and it was great. Despite mixed reviews from others, we really enjoyed our food and the service was spot-on. We lingered for 3 hours because the darn thing rotates so slowly! I don't really see the point in going there in the evening, as the views wouldn't be so amazing.

You see, that's the good thing about Al Messilah, they are really hot on maintenance and proactive about looking after the houses e.g they're currently in the middle of upgrading all the kitchen work tops on the compound to new marble ones. The rest of the kitchen, and the bathrooms, are quite dated looks-wise (I like to call it kitsch!) but I personally quite like them. The only thing we didn't like was the white goods (dishwasher is ok but oven and washing machine looked ****) so we got them to remove them and bought our own - but we plan on staying a long time, so it was an investment worth making. When someone moves out, the maintenance guys completely strip the house out, paint every surface (including the inside of drawers!) and put new upstairs carpets in (downstairs is tiled). So you get a clean and fresh villa. Mind you, if you can get on West Bay Lagoon with your budget, I would definitely consider it - great place to live :) Also there is a brand new mega-compound next to Al Messilah called Al Rayyan Village - you will see it if you come to Al Messilah - it's the brand new pink and yellow villas on the right. Great for location, but the houses look HUGE and I have no idea what prices or maintenance are like - personally we chose to stay away from new-builds as have heard too many horror stories about build quality. edited by amy77 on 06/03/2012

Been here 1 year and 2 days exactly :) I meant to say, our 3-bed on Al Messilah is only QR14,500 but it's very small (by GCC standards, not by UK standards though!) and it has no maids room. There are 3-bed bungalows with maids' rooms for Qr16,000 and bigger houses (4-beds I think) with maids' rooms in the 18-22k price bracket. It's about 20 minutes to West Bay, slightly longer in rush hour. It's a very central location, close to D-ring, so really you can be anywhere in the city, including the airport, in less than 20 minutes. It's also very peaceful, which for me is the best thing about it, as most other compounds in Doha seem to be surrounded by construction work. I think Al Jazi are around 20k - 24k for 4-beds. Also very peaceful, if you can avoid the villas which back onto the main road. I'm not sure on West Bay Lagoon prices. Riviera Gardens is very nice and I think it's about 18-22k a month. It's slightly closer to West Bay than Al Messilah. I think they're all bungalows with 3 and 4 bedrooms.

You could check out my compound, Al Messilah - it's one of the older ones in Doha and is very green and well set out (not crammed in together like others), with loads of kiddy play areas and a new kids' playgroup on Monday mornings. My husband works in West Bay and it's a really easy commute. I wouldn't go through an agent though - just rock up at the gate and ask to see an empty villa. There are quite a lot of empty ones at the moment, although it is pot luck whether any are actually available as the hospital has leases on most of them. They may well be running a waiting list. With your generous budget, you could get even closer to West Bay - try Al Jazi, which is about as close as you can get. It's really, really nice and I would totally live there if I had the budget! People complain about the villas being dated but I quite liked the ones I saw. You could also look in West Bay Lagoon, which is a very nice sort of compoundy-complex near West Bay which I would also like to live in if I had your budget! For Al Messilah and Al Jazi, I certainly wouldn't go through an agent, but would just drive up to the gate and ask to see empty villas and then haggle directly with the managers in person. I don't see the point in paying agents' fees. But I can see the sense in using an agent on a look-see weekend just to get a feel for different places. Feel free to pop in and say hello if you do decide to look at Al Messilah :)

I am in the process of contacting all the English speaking schools to see if any of them are interested in getting involved (either in the actual art work itself, or in spin-off projects of any sort). Hi. We were in EXACTLY the same boat this time last year, as all our stuff only half filled a container. I don't think you can share containers to Qatar for some reason. And in any case, our removals firm only wanted another £200 if we decided to fill the container. So we did. I went to IKEA and stocked up on as much flat pack furniture as I could. It was the best thing I ever did - the furniture on sale over here is awful. Oh and by the way, make sure your company is registered with the BAR overseas removers scheme. Ours went bust while our shipment was en route (seems to be quite common given the housing market in Britain at the moment - even big names have gone into administration and then been bought out over the past few years). Being part of the BAR scheme really helped, as BAR took us under their wing and helped us sort through all the mess including paying the agents in Doha the monies they were due and registering ourselves as creditors with the administrators in order to claim our money back. It was all ok in the end - wouldn't have been if our removals company hadn't been BAR registered!

Since my OP have found out that Strata isn't opening till March/April, but the Square is open now and so is some sort of bar/lounge. They certainly came from nowhere with this announcement! The other Intercon announced it yesterday (the same day as the opening) on their FB page, so I assume it is a sort of soft opening in the sense that they're expecting initial business to be gradual while word spreads. Reckon they might be inundated sooner than they expect though!

Was a bit surprised by seeing this on Facebook yesterday, as it still looks a bit unfinished to me, but apparently the new "Intercontinental Doha The City" opened yesterday in West Bay. It has residence suites and at least three restaurants, although I don't know which, if any, are already open. There is 'The Square' for all-day dining (and presumably Friday brunch), Prime (a meat-lover's restaurant apparently!) and a bar/restaurant at the top with amazing views called 'Strata'. There is also a rooftop open-air pool which I would love to check out!

He is amazing, not just in the context of Qatar, but actually in an international context as well. I have had 18 or so surgeries on my hip and I have severe muscle wastage as a result. Dr. Chet is the ONLY therapist I've ever seen who actually made a difference and really understands what's going on. I've had scores of physios identify my muscle weaknesses before, but none of them have ever really managed to get past the fact that whatever I do, I cannot seem to get the right muscles to 'fire' in order to do the required strengthening exercises. Dr. Chet looked also at my scar tissue, which was blocking the muscles from working properly and used what I think was myofascial release techniques to help to free it. He had my leg moving through more range of movement than ever before after just one session and after 3 sessions I was like a new woman!

Really? This is GREAT news if it's true, as it is a vital first step towards addressing some of the many animal control problems that Qatar has. Our puppy was registered with the MoE as soon as we got her. I don't see why anyone would choose not to do this to be honest, as so many dogs go missing here and the chances of getting them back without a chip (if they end up either with the police or at the Animal Health Dept by the airport) are pretty slim. We had her microchipped at Qatar Veterinary Center and then registered her details, together with her chip number, online ourselves.

Vee, I really don't buy into all the detoxing stuff, but I am sure it wouldn't take too much to get my diet back on track to how it was in England - it will just take more trips to the shops and more money but it's got to be worth it.

Interesting about the allergies, Carolina.... <surveys own, dirty, dusty house and considers getting a cleaner after all.....> I do/did have asthma. I thought I'd grown out of it, but every so often it rears its ugly head as a chest infection type thing. In fact, about 4 or 5 years ago a nurse at my GP's practice had quite a go at me as she was trying to claim I didn't have a chest infection at all, but my asthma was actually not being managed properly. At the time, I kind of ignored her (ahem) but maybe there is something in it. I am re-taking my steroid inhaler now anyway, as I always do when I get a cloggy chest like I do now. I am pretty sure that this particular thing I have at the moment is some kind of viral infection though, as yesterday all my limbs were really aching with occasional stabbing pains - it was horrible, and all I could do was lie in bed looking at the ceiling. Also, my husband has had pneumonia for over 3 weeks now, he keeps almost getting better, going back to work, and then it takes hold of him again. I think I need to make more of an effort to eat more fruit and veg, and maybe try taking my antihistamines every day for 3 months or so to see if it helps. Might carry on with the asthma steroids as well for a couple of months and see if it makes any difference. Oh and also try dusting and hoovering a bit more often! Even after 2 days you can write your name in the dust on our coffee table.... edited by amy77 on 05/02/2012

That's what I reckon kimmc3 as well. It's no coincidence that they announced that they were "thinking about" bringing in an import duty and VAT a few days ago. Also they seem to have already done their DHL crackdown a couple of months ago, I guess Aramex was next on the list. There were always a few US websites I used in England who used to 'minimise' the value of the goods on the paperwork, or state they were gifts, in order to get around UK import tax - I'm hopeful the same websites will do the same for here ;)

Doha Vets isn't the one near Villagio LadyD - are you thinking of Qatar Veterinary Centre instead? Doha Vets is that awful run-down place near Hamad. It is true that the same owner owns both Doha Vets and the Canadian Veterinary Surgery, and personally I wouldn't give him a penny of my money, but on the other hand I have heard very good things about the vet who works at the Canadian place and she is certainly well qualified and experienced. The vet near Katara specialises in Falcons etc and I have heard one or two horror stories about him messing up routine spays on dogs and cats, so I would not choose to use him, although I know people that do and are happy. Park View vets near Landmark is meant to be good as well. To be honest Beate2, I don't imagine any vet would attempt to do a tooth-clean on a cat without using a general anaesthetic, so I think QR800 is a pretty reasonable price in all honesty.

Yeah, kind of... Although I hardly ever buy any because of the cost and lack of availability and I was obsessed with buying organic wherever possible in the UK. What you can get: Veggies: there is a small organic section in Lulu selling European organic veg, but they are way overpriced eg £10 for a bag of spinach . Also during the winter, Greenbox.me offers locally grown organic veg. For the rest of the year they offer European imports (not organic but v high quality) Dry goods: Carrefour has its Bio brand and most supermarkets carry a few other organic bits eg Dorset Cereals Eggs: usually imported European organics available. What you can't get (to the best of my knowledge): Meat Milk

A lot of people do talk about this happening and some people get water purifiers built in to their shower heads for it. I can't say I've had any problems, but then we had really hard water in England anyway so anything would be better than that! Try searching for water filter/purifier threads - I know they sell them in lulu but not sure which are the best.

Spoke to hubby about this and he said for the sort of current load of a heater, you'd be better off taking the plug off altogether and wiring a British style plug onto it. Thankfully, our Rowenta oil-filled radiator came with a British plug anyway. If you do need to use an adapter, you know you can just use the plastic push in ones for those sorts of plugs? You just need something which pushes in the earth pin in the wall socket.

Also you can turn the aircon off, but still have a flow of air over the baby - it's very controllable. Honestly if you're getting a bigger car, don't get one without it - the air doesn't circulate enough from the front to cool the back down. And you end up with a freezing cold arm as you try and blast enough cold air through to the back to try and keep it cool!
