Andrea, you mention fried rice which traditional recipe use soy sauce. You can't use it if the child has a allergy gluten /wheat. You have to use Tamari sauce ( heavier then soy ,you jest need to add less) Thank you, wow it's a little mine field but i'd determined both the LO and mum will get to have a day off of worrying about whats being served.

Seriously, i've always been a big advocate of catering these things myself as I don't like the whole processed chicken nugget thing that a lot of the play areas offer but this is getting very tricky! I thought i'd finally come up with a suitable menu, home made (oven cooked) wedges, fish, vegetable fried rice, fruit platter, veg sticks, dariy free dips followed by cake but it seems it's not that easy and I haven't even thought about party games...I only have 4 days to go :-( It's my birthday on the same day and I really don't want to end up stressing about it...there must be an easy solution to this one :-). Maybe next year we'll do the play place instead ;-)

Sorry not stirring the pot, but are Muslims allowed to eat something that has been cooked with alcohol, even if the alcohol content has been cooked off (genuine question) i.e. something cooked with beer/brandy etc? (Just in case you have muslim children whose mums would mind the cake having beer in it!) (sorry!) Oh blimey! I have no idea if I do or not so, if I can't use milk and I can't use beer I guess I have to scrap the batter and just go for a bread crumb type thing...this is getting very complicated :-( Am seriously considering just filling them fully of jelly!

Unfortunately yes, I may be wrong but unless you can hire one at your destination your only option may be to travel with your own seat. It's no fun I know (I have two LO's) but better safe than sorry eh :-)

beer is wheat based isn't it? Why not use bread crumbs? Get some gluten / diary free bread from organic supermarket and make into bread crumbs. Toss the fish in corn flour, beaten egg and then the bread crumbs - and shallow fry on both sides. Izzy I did think of that, does that bread taste the same (ie the other kids won't notice the difference?) Have no idea - am not glutten intolerant, was just an alternative. Lol :):)

You could make a batter with gluten free flour and I use beer instead of milk. The cooking will eliminate the alcohol and its a nicer lighter batter than a milk based one. If you can't get gluten free flour use rice flour or corn flour but their harder to mix. Add little at a time. Good Luck! Can he have eggs?? if so make meringues or pavlova with fruit... Great thank you, Stupid question maybe but any idea of quantity, would I simply use the same amount of corn flour as is listed for wheat flour/beer for milk etc. (I hope that makes sense)

Dear Dorset Diva, I have two small ones, nearly 2 and 4 on Saturday and as you say I often think (god to have some time to myself!) so thank you for reminding me how special these moments are :-) If you want to get involved with some little ones there is a voluntary group here (listed only on facebook search for The fairy godmother club Dubai) or check out this weeks time out. I hope that despite missing her dearly you enjoy your freedom a little.

I loooove Hallumi, but its way too much sodium... I reduce the sodium content of Hallumi by cutting it how I am going to want to eat it first, then place the slices/cubes in a bowl and cover with boiling water. Leave for about 5 minutes, then drain and pat dry with a paper/kitchen towel. then you can prepare as normal :) edited by Abaddon on 08/03/2011 Great tip thank you, the fresh stuff doesn't seem to be as salty as the packaged stuff though do you know if it's as high in sodium? edited by AndreaA on 09/03/2011

So the old boy has finally gone home and peace is restored Chez DC. The lady thanked me for picking him up and looking after him, and apologised for him spewing all over my car. End of, thank goodness. Thanks to everyone for your help and advice. Your car is safe, SamD! And ShellyMcD, you can stop the logistics planning :D. edited by DubaiCat on 14/02/2011 Pls tell me she offered to pay to get the car sorted at least?

Oh Andrea - poor puss. This just breaks my heart. Just remind the parents as well, kittens bones and joints are very bendy at this age (like a baby) and for this damage to happen, it must have taken some pretty significant force - this was not just some accidental injury, as a byproduct of mishandling. Good luck - just yell out if you need anything. Thanks hon x

Good for you and the other Mum - "Daddy" isn't going to care until he gets clipped in his wallet. That's what daughter has seen and learned. Daddy has to learn a lesson here IMHO and a 10,000 dirham price tag will make HIM stop and think (we hope) edited by marycatherine on 09/02/2011 I couldn't agree more, they seem to think their daughter is some innocent angle...how wrong they are! Wicked is the only word I can think of that they'd allow on here ;-)

Tell them you'll report them to the animal cruelty people at the municipality and how would they like a 10,000 Dhs fine instead! Just spoken t the other mum who is still willing to pick up her 50% as she is still very upset with what happened and agrees it was dreadful. So together we are going to go and talk to Mum no.1 and explain her daughters part in all this. If she continues to maintain she won't pay then Animal Cruelty it is!

there is no pet insurance here anymore.... You should have said "doesn't she teach her children humanity" Oh it gets better, she's just been over and her husband has refused to pay a penny as his daughter didn't physically hurt the kitten! Oh what fun this is going to be! No Izzy we didn't but if they start refusing to pay I will! edited by AndreaA on 09/02/2011

A quick update, Puss was able to have her x-rays today has her lungs are now clear thankfully (thats the good news!!) The bad news is the x-rays show that the children actually managed to break her hip joint whilst pulling on her leg so she needs to have orthopedic surgery next week to have a piece removed. I have been assured that as long as we have the operation asap she will be fine long term but that she is in a lot of pain at the moment and she will need some time to recover after the op. Oh and it's looking like costing around 3000AED! So I go with a copy of the existing bill which currently stands at 862AED to the mother of the 5 year old. Her first reaction was "Wow!, Don't you have insurance!". I'm yet to see the other parents as they were out but i'm sure they won't be too happy either. Hey ho! Puss is thankfully still in good spirits and still very loving and patient.

Pentel I have a kitten and a 21 mtg DD you can have. The kitten is a delight and DD is very 'challenging' she love the kitten esp when she can get hold of her and carry her around with one arm under her tummy and the other around her throat! edited by AndreaA on 06/02/2011 ahh, the classic headlock! DD doesn't have a kitten... she has a younger brother who does the trick just nicely! My DD has an older brother and she also likes to give him what for! :-) As for the kitten she is exceptionally good with DDs torture but love to bite me at every opportunity.
