Thanks HereComesTheSun, but I think I've read enough group on reviews and complaints on EW to kinda stay away. I'm heading to Mirdiff today, thinking maybe Daiso or whatever it's called may have one!

As long as your child's head is still protected in the shell of the seat (meaning she's not too tall) she can remain rear facing for as long as she can in the infant seat. Even if her legs are too long it's ok as if you were to crash, broken legs are not as bad as a broken spine. Our little one is one year and at the "weight" to switch to front facing toddler seat, but the health authorities said that those are only guidelines of when to switch over at the 'minimum' weight allowance... you can keep them in the other seat for quite awhile.

Well, the new one on Sheikh Zayed wouldn't do test pots... just got back from there. Such a bummer, all the little projects I see on blogs and pinterest and they always talk about just buying test pots. Oh well, I'll just have to limit my colour choices!

We're at 11 months and still bfeeding along with introducing new solids at breakfast, lunch, and dinner times. What's still handy about that is if I didn't pack any food and we're out and about longer than expected I know he won't be hungry... boobs are always ready to go!

Ty all, for sharing your experiences.. What I have ended up with is not to buy anything unless I need it.. The answers were so diverse that I believe it is again all about what the baby asks for, or is comfortable with.. If you really want to keep it simple, buy lots of size 1 and 2 diapers, a car seat, and about 10 sleepers. Breastfeed your baby. You really made it easy.. I'd get a car seat, with 2 bases, so we can use it for my car and my husband's.. A car seat that I can use on a stroller as well (stroller to be bought later). What do u guys say about exclusive breast feeding? I so much want to do so, but a friend keeps reminding how impractical it is, specially at nights.. (Not that it has changed my mind) Impractical?? Uh, I didn't think so! Our first few weeks we had to supplement bfeeding with formula because of a pre-term birth and THAT was impractical. Once we got off of formula it was bliss. Bfeeding is so handy (once you get a hang of it), easy to pack, quickly accessible, and far easier to "prepare" at night than warming a bottle at 3am! Keep in mind, a lot of breast-fed babies won't sleep through the night as quickly, but for me it doesn't bother me to get up and feed once or twice (in the beginning it's a lot more, regardless of breast fed or formula anyways). Anyways, I could go on- I'm a HUGE supporter of breast milk is best (not in the crazy hippy way :) just in the healthy, happy way!) Just to add- nobody will tell you that it isn't as "natural" as they say it is when you start. It's finicky, frustrating, and downright annoying to get a hang of. STICK WITH IT, once you pass the frustration stage it becomes so easy you'll wonder what the problem ever was. If you're struggling go see a Lactation Specialist. So many women give up far too early, there's often a point when the frustration becomes so much that women give in to it- that's when you just got to push through, [b'>seek support[/b'>, and keep trying. It'll be worth it! :) edited by andreasmullet on 06/07/2013 oops, editing again because Sanddy-Dogg is right: formula or breastfed- whatever's right for you will work. (I'm not at all saying mom's who formula feed are bad moms. Never would I think so! Didn't want it to come across that way!!) edited by andreasmullet on 06/07/2013

We honestly didn't buy much, as most things were gifted to us. We were lucky that way. But my favourite items were: a set of Aden & Anais baby blankets (in Dubai we found these invaluable and used them for everything), the rainforest jumperoo from Fisher Price (although that's not useful until a few months in), and just a little rocker chair (ours didn't have any gidgets or gadgets, didn't swing or vibrate or light up, and it worked just fine. Be careful with buying a swing, some babies hate them and it turns out to be a waste of money. It's hard to know what your baby will like) Things we had that I found useless: Toys. He found one or two interesting (the Lamaze brands were nice) but much prefers boxes and water bottles etc.! Luckily we didn't spend a penny on all those baby toys you can get sucked in to... now we can wait until he's a year or so and actually shows interest in certain things before filling the house with junk!

hahah, what was the actual thing the poster Overheard at McDonalds? And who was the OP? wasn't it something about someone moving to Cannes...... Monaco maybe? I vaguely remember posting on a thread years ago about overhearing two alpha mummies having a competitive chat in Costa. Pretty sure I didn't start the thread though so it could have been in reply to a Cannes one. I believe the original thread started in 2009. I copied and pasted many of the stories posters wrote to keep them for a coffee table book for whenever we move home, but unfortunately didn't copy and paste the original post that started the whole thing. I don't think it had anything to do with Cannes- the OP titled the thread Overheard at McDonalds, and it was a story about the Mcdonalds clerk not getting an order right, I think the customer was trying to order water or exchange a drink in a meal or something. Anyways, it sure created a great thread, and a few more to follow!

I am also interested to hear the feedback. I have just a little one right now, but don't plan on putting him in Nursery. I know there's a large homeschool group that gets together, and I'm sure there are many people who don't put their children in Nursery. Just need to know where to go!! I'll be watching this thread too :)

Hahaha, I've been screaming at the screen as well, what an idiot, "I know Dubai like the back of my hand" and then suggesting they go to Souk Madinat...! They were at Dubai Mall, didn't see them at Ibn Battuta...they could have got pretty much all they needed at the Antiques Museum, lol...mind you, must say I thought Oud was the perfume not an instrument! Funny thing is, they could have gotten everything on the list at Madinat! At a price though!! Fun though to watch an episode and actually know where things are found- we love Apprentice UK but aren't from the UK so we never really know the ins and outs of the cities they're in.

Friends of ours did it. It really depends on the price you're willing to sell items for. They found a line-up out their gate two hours before they were "opening" their doors! And in the line was A LOT of taxi drivers! So, they sold items, due to clientele, at a lower price than they had anticipated. They were exhausted; it was a long day of hard core negotiators and the house was packed. In retrospect, they wish they had gone Dubizzle to be able to price things out better... but Dubizzle takes time and energy that they did not have. They also had people asking about EVERYTHING else they could see in the house and wanting to buy everything for a fraction of a cost.

I think she means when there is a foreign language being spoken and the movie has English subtitles so the viewer knows what is being said. Like if it's an English speaking movie, but there's a character speaking German, or Klingon in this instance, they put in English subtitles so you know the story line. Here, those subtitles are then removed and replaced with the already available Arabic subtitles. So the English speakers miss out on that part of the plot. It happened in Avatar too I believe... a bit frustrating because you know the English subtitles were there previously but they were removed and the Arabic subtitles continue as they normally do throughout the show.

GOOD breakfast joints. And I'm not talking about Brunch and booze. I'm talking about breakfast places that serve p0rk, pancakes, waffles, the works (+the healthy stuff too like yogurts etc.)... back home we have Cora's and many other small franchises that are lined up out the door on the weekends and pretty busy weekdays too. Is this an agency walker? Shouldn't their rates be set? If it's just somebody you'd like to hire I'm surprised the moral police haven't jumped on you yet to ensure that said dog walker is under your sponsorship... will he be a live-in dog walker? Will he just walk the dog or would you also like a list of household chores he should be doing as well- I don't believe Alex's Shoes includes dog walking which is a major oversight... Are you going to give Fridays off or should the dog-walker work 7 days a week. at your beck and call? Are you only going to pay for his flight home once a year, or if he decides to stay in town will you give him cash instead? Oh dear, so many questions!! ;)

I just bought some "squeeze 'ems". They are small pouches that you can fill with your own purees. I am about to take an 8 month old on a 12 hour flight and plan on packing my own food in these so that they don't take up much space, aren't heavy, and pack back up flat to be washed once home. They will also easily pop into a glass of hot water to heat the puree. Tried them out the other day, awesome! Dishwasher friendly too. A bit messy to fill but I just need to get it down pat. I know that at Heathrow they make you try formula and food at security. So even though these pouches aren't labelled or sealed, they are under the 100ml limit so should be allowed with no problem. I bought them from: www.luxelittle.com Very nice ladies, they'll deliver your purchase in Dubai. edited by andreasmullet on 19/04/2013

Maxi cosi infant seats are rear facing. I think around a year and a half to two years you start facing them forwards as it is then safer that way because of weight etc. The maxi cosi seat also fits into the isofix base, which is pricey but I highly recommend it, it's such an easy system. Check Just Kidding. ETA: sorry, just realised you're asking about a toddler. I think that's fairly rare... here's what I found about it on carseat.org: When can I turn my baby around to face forward in the car? When he is at least 2 years old, and preferably longer. (Swedish children ride rear-facing until at least three years old in safety seats made to fit larger children.) In a crash, an infant's spinal cord may stretch if she is riding facing forward, and the baby could die or be paralyzed for life. This is true even for babies who have strong neck muscles and good head control. For children between age 1 and 2, it is 5 times safer to ride facing the back of the car. Most convertible safety seats can be used facing the rear up to 35-45 pounds. So there is no reason to turn your baby forward before age one and risk spinal injury. Do not use a rear-facing-only seat if your baby weighs more than the maximum shown in the instructions (22-35 lbs.) or if her head is within an inch of the top edge of the seat. When using a convertible seat rear-facing, make sure the child's head is below the top of the safety seat, so that the head is not exposed to contact with the vehicle interior. edited by andreasmullet on 18/04/2013

I'm constantly having to repeat myself to them; pick this up after yourself, put that away, did you hear me? Well, if you did,why didn't you respond? I mean if they just said ok or even grunted in response I wouldn't have to repeat myself now would I? I am what you call a nag ;) This is me! I can't tell you the number of times I say "Can someone PLEASE acknowledge I've spoken?!" It's like speaking to a brick wall, so frustrating. edited by Daza on 18/04/2013 I just had to check the posters name on this one because I thought maybe I had posted it in my sleep or something! I get the "how can I listen to you when I'm doing something else??" Apparently he's ALWAYS "doing something else": computer, newspaper, checking phone, breathing... Maybe I should start pencilling in the time when he can sit and stare at me as I talked. But then, he probably still won't hear a word I say.

But I don't think anyone has any way of knowing how an 8 year old would take such devastating news..She may never forgive you for not telling her that she has a father somewhere that she knows nothing about - a lot depends on why that happened, on the other hand she loves her daddy and that may be all she'll care about... I think an 8 year old would be forgiving. Children are very forgiving beings, that's what makes them so innocent and kind hearted :) Now, if you were to wait until she was a teenager... well, that's a different story!

I have absolutely no experience in this, but just thought maybe it's a lot like having the "s3x" talk- be open, honest, and let her lead the conversation by answering the questions she asks. If she doesn't ask any then wait a few months or a year or whatever to talk about it again, or wait for her to come to you. And much like the "s3x" talk it's probably important to explain it age appropriately, whether they're 5 or 8. Hopefully someone can help you that has some experience... Good luck! :)

What I don't get is how we have a great nozzle head attached to our hose, you know, the spray gun kind- at least we used to- the gardeners refuse to use them and pull them off all of the time. We kept reattaching it and finally just gave up. Why won't they use it?? TBH I don't like to use them either, and really don't ...DH is constantly asking "why don't you use the nozzle?", I just plain don't like any of the settings on it, and like to use my finger to adjust the spray and pressure...if that makes any sense. Yea, I get that. But then when they want the water to stop briefly they bend the hose. With the nozzle you just release the trigger then you can use two hands instead of having to hold the hose in one! Anyways, one of life's great gardener mysteries ;) also such a first world problem... :D

Scans are ridiculous here. Back home you get one ultrasound, maybe two, during your whole pregnancy. You do go for lots of regular checkups, but it's the doctor checking heart beat, your weight, tummy measurements, feeling around... there is no need for an ultrasound every single time yet in Dubai that seems to be the norm... most likely because it's private care and we're paying for it so why not charge the most possible! Maybe you could have some luck finding a doc that doesn't do a scan every single time?

My sister just recently had the joyful experience of having "the talk" with her 9 and 7 year old girls. She felt it was still a bit young BUT they had heard "stuff" on the bus ride home and the "stuff" they heard wasn't the right stuff! So she felt she needed to tell them the proper facts. She used the proper anatomy words and just told them the basics and only expanded where they questioned her further. We have heard that it's best to let them lead the conversation and basically just answer what they ask and don't go too much further. Anyways, the girls asked her, "Have you done that??" So she answered, "Yes. Only twice." Funny, we had a chuckle. (and they were totally grossed out by it!)

I am from Edmonton and please believe me when I say: this snow that you just got and the extended winter isn't how it is [i'>every[/i'> year! Boy, I would switch places with you in a minute as I miss home sooo much! But, just give it some time, you'll settle in and find that there's lots to do once you start driving. Although, even now before you have a car, public transport is ridiculously easy and you could go nearly everywhere! Busses are generally on schedule so if you time it just right you wouldn't have to stand at the bus stop for very long at all. (I wouldn't use taxi's, they're too expensive). Take your daughter to the Space and Science Centre (you could easily spend hours upon hours there), or to the Muttart Conservatory in the river valley (all inside, and nice and warm!!). West Ed Mall is another place where you could go swimming, on rides, shopping... and spend a full day- or two. Most areas of the city also have indoor pools you could venture to. Once the weather warms up you'll like it, there's a reason why it's dubbed Festival City- there's a lot going on in the summers to keep you well entertained!
