Every conversation DH and I have begins with where and when can we move. Haven't found an answer yet, though. we are thinking of south east asia / united states Needs to be someplace not too hot. I'm completely sick of the heat and humidity. And the US has tax implications for us. Do you not have to pay US taxes here? No. Because I don't work and my DH pays taxes in a different country so we don't. But if we started bringing a lot of money into the US, we'd have to. But don't you think that you are getting something in return for your taxes in the USA? You don't have to file taxes if you don't work? Is that only if you have no assets in the USA?

I actually have had the opposite experience. My children's teacher was the same for 4 years. She is off on maternity leave now but she will be back. Yes, I understand your point about the end of term show but at no point did TP say that it was a show. It is an observation of a normal ballet class. TP says that they do not shows for the very young students. I also understand that you would like to see your daughter doing more intricate ballet steps but I don't think that that is generally done in the classes at school. They are mainly just for little girls to get a feel for ballet. It is expensive but I have yet to find a non expensive activity for children in Dubai...

Sorry, I am not making myself clear as crystal. If the father is an American military personnel, then neither the foreign mother nor the unborn child are eligible for American citizenship. So this law only applies to people in the military?

Sorry but this is news to me. I know someone who left Canada to have her baby in the USA in 2013. I also know that children conceived out of wedlock to American parents are allowed citizenship..... Children conceived out of wedlock or rape to a foreign mother and American father and born on foreign soil are ineligible for American citizenship. We have to agree to disagree. I understand the paragraph cited below to mean that a child conceived out of wedlock is eligible for US citizenship if his/her father lived in the USA the requisite years.... edited by AnonDubai on 29/09/2014

Taken from the U.S. Consulate in Dubai's website: If the child is born out of wedlock, transmission requirements depend on which parent is the U.S. citizen parent. If the mother is the U.S. citizen, she must have been physically present in the U.S. for 12 consecutive months prior to the child’s birth. If the father is the U.S. citizen, he must have been physically present in the U.S. for five years prior to the child’s birth, two of which must be after the age of 14. For either parent, additional requirements to establish the blood relationship between parent and child and to assure support for the child may apply.

And you can bet those women with Canadian permanent residency who spend a few days at the hospital in Buffalo to have their babies never pay their hospital bill, leaving lawful American residents to suffer the consequences... edited by AnonDubai on 28/09/2014 Em, updated rules stipulate that the pregnant woman arrive on American soil at least 4 months prior to birth of the child. With all due respect, I can't understand how they can enforce that for women driving across the border. I have not heard of this new law. Is it in writing anywhere? Will it also be applied to women South of the Border?

Having a maid or two is half the reason I live here ... if it gets too difficult to get help, I'll move back to the US! Oh really? Is having a maid that important to you? I think she's trying to be sarcastic but it's failing miserably :) You know, NYC, I think b**chy people are great. That's why I think you're the best ... edited by Guinness2 on 29/09/2014 Why did you have to go there? I truly thought you were being sarcastic. Next time you'd like to attempt to offend me, come up with something original or with some more intellect behind it. We're a bit past the junior high s**t of name calling. Do you two know each other?

Guinness, you make a lot of valid points and I am in a similar situation as you. I have a big house, 4 young children, and lots of places to go and things to do. I also can't cook so having maids helps me to run my household smoothly (although I sometimes feel that things are still chaotic!). If I had to do everything by myself, I suppose I wouldn't want to live here either. Heck, I don't even want to go on vacation if I can't bring a maid with me. A family vacation is actually a hard labor sentence to me!! lol

Yes, I agree. I made a lot of bad decisions when I was younger but I would not be who I am today if I hadn't made those bad decisions. Part of life is making good and bad decisions and being able to look back on them and be content with what you have chosen...

I have two Ethiopian maids and one of them we just recently renewed with. You can process a visa for an Ethiopian already here but you cannot bring one here from Ethiopia on a new visa... Thanks. I didn't know that Ethiopians labor workers were banned as well. They have been banned for at least a year now.

FYI, Guinness and NYC, I wasn't being sarcastic or mean. I was just asking a serious question. I would never judge anyone with a maid. I have two who do everything for me (well, who should...)so it would be hypocritical of me to judge. I am just wondering why someone would like having a maid so much that they would move back to the USA if they couldn't have one. I am wondering about the logistics of it all. That's all. edited by AnonDubai on 29/09/2014

Who cares about the thumbs down? I didn't thumb her down but has it occurred to anyone that a thumbs down can be used in many different ways? Only the person who did the thumbing can know. It is also very easy to hit a thumb by accident. A thumbs down could mean that the person doesn't like the idea of bring pregnant at 54. It doesn't necessarily have to be about agreeing or disagreeing. Thumbing down can also be used when there are grammatical and spelling errors in a post. If someone writes something upsetting or not good, it can be thumbed down to show that the reader doesn't like the situation....

I'm sorry. Your husband just sounds like a jerk. I am sorry that you married a jerk. I wish that I could help you, but I cannot. My only advice to you is to not get pregnant again. I know a lot of times women in unhappy marriages end up getting pregnant again and then they are truly stuck. Your youngest will start school in a year or two. You could get a job or become a social butterfly. Does your husband let you go shopping at least?

I personally knew of someone who did that- drove from Canada, got all set up in a hotel everything, just to have her kid born on U.S. soil. Some people are really entitlement minded In fairness I can understand why people are entitlement minded. Not necessarily saying driving over the border if you already have Canadian citizenship is fair play but for those especially from countries in turmoil I can fully understand their desire to have an EU/Canadian/more secure passport. So many of us are very lucky to have been born and hold the passports' we do. I also fully understand that but at least they could stay in their new country and contribute to it positively. My mother is a naturalized American. Once she became American, she stayed there and didn't think of leaving...

I am happy about this. I am so sick of hearing people with Canadian permanent residency talking about how they will leave Canada as soon as they get their citizenship. Many of them aren't even living there but are somehow circumventing the rules by flying to/from the North of the USA and then taking buses between the two countries so their passports aren't stamped. I have also heard of pregnant women with Canadian permanent residency driving to NY in labor just so that their child can get US citizenship! So the Canadian one is not good enough for you? Enough is enough!

Rosie, Hopefully you will get to read this as I missed your initial post. Going against you is the fact that you do not have any Middle East experience. The plus side is that you are from the UK. I work for an international law firm. May I suggest that you do two things. 1. Set yourself up on LinkedIn and get in touch with recruiters that way. 2. Email the law firms direct. That way law firms do not have to pay agency fees. I know for a fact that if they like what they see on your CV you do not have to travel to Dubai for interviews. I myself have arranged vc's via our London office for interviews. The last two law firms I have worked at will not even entertain the thought of a PA whose first language is not English which is sad but true. Why is that sad? The reason I say it's sad is just because your not an English native speaking legal PA doesn't mean you can't do the job as well as a native English PA. I cannot speak for all PA positions but for legal PAs this does seem the case for international law firms. IMO, that's not a bad thing.

I am not sure I get the point of listing accidents we see. The problem at the moment is that a) there are a LOT of newcomers to Dubai (someone mentioned that 500,000 new visas have been issued over the last few months), put these newcomers from 200 different countries on the same roads, all with different driving styles , speeds & standards and it will be interesting. b) the roads are a lot busier than we have come to expect over the last few years. c) People who are new here may not be used to certain driving habits which you get used to here, for example just 'knowing' when someone is about to overtake you on the inside etc.. It takes time to build up that knowledge. Informative post

ugh I know whenever I see these fees I wonder how people pay for them! I am also wondering the same thing. But these schools are opening at those fees so there must be the demand for them and people willing to pay... People must be getting some kind of help via work with paying for these fees, as I just don't see how else it is possible. I think that some companies pay a percentage of school fees, but I doubt that there are many companies who would pay 100% of those fees. I think that there are a lot of wealthy people here...

What about the long suffering animals in the cramped in humane Dubai zoo?! Will they at least transfer them to one of these zoos ?? I think that they will all go to the Dubai Safari, which is set to open next year.
