I have been to a few over the years and I don't understand why people like them so much either. I personally don't like buffets. The food is usually poor quality and if I spend that much money, I want to be served. I don't like having to get up all the time to get food and have dirty plates and cups sitting at the end of the table. I'd much rather go to a restaurant and be served a meal...

Okay to disagree. Its the way you do it that matters. Some people turn it from intellectual debate to a personal insult. Others are just *******. Facebook is safer because people cannot hide behind their real name. Sorry, I disagree - I have been subjected to some horrible bullying by someone on facebook together with the person actually spreading lies about me...I also have a very close friend who is currently being subjected to the most hideous bullying imaginable on facebook and there isn't a thing that can be done to stop it... At least on a forum you can just walk away.... Very True, plus people can still Private Message you without you knowing then on fb, and it is scary - the sleazy comments from dodgy men - I hate it! Yes, you are right. Some of the PMs on Facebook are downright sleazy and some men repeat their messages after they have already been ignored. They say things like: "Don't ignore me." It is really creepy and in my case, besides having a female name, I don't have one picture of myself on Facebook so they are just after anyone. My mother is in her late 60s and she also gets PMs from men...

Hi! I can't recommend a podiatrist to you but when I had an ingrown toenail, I saw a surgeon and he was able to remove it as an outpatient procedure. So that route is also a possibility for your friend's daughter....

Yes, I have to agree with you, Guinness. By the time my kids reach high school, I would hope to be able to move them to the American system. Once they reach that age, there isn't much of a cost discrepancy between the British and American schools. My 5 year-old gets regular homework. If she were in the USA, she'd be in kindergarten and would not be getting homework nor would she be expected to read books or write sentences. She also wouldn't be learning a foreign language... edited by AnonDubai on 22/09/2014 Actually, my daughter was in KG in the states last year and received 2 assignments everyday with a third being a 3 day homework. By the end of the year, she was able to recognize a lot of sight words, read with help and write pretty well. My concern is not with how much homework they get, it is how things are being taught. For instance, yesterday my daughter came home with 'mental maths' and she had to differentiate between even and odd. They taught her to start with 1 and skip a number to find which is which (memorizing) but she didn't grasp the concept. When I taught her by showing her (fingers pair off for even and there is an odd man out for Odd) she grasped the concept much quicker and was able to answer. I was not aware that kindergarten children are getting homework in the USA. I guess that just shows you that there is no uniform American curriculum. Every school district does what it wants!

I am American but my children are in the British system. Personally, I feel that it is worse than back home. They would be getting a better education in the American public school system. I wish that I could send them to an American school here, but they are way too expensive... Why do you think it's worse here? Do you think the american schools here are good? My children are in the British system and it's a major change. Also, there is A LOT of memorizing without understanding and that troubles me. My sister teaches 2nd grade in the US public school system and her class size is much smaller and her classroom is much better than any private school I have seen here. I have heard that the American schools here are good, but most of them cost upwards of 50,000 dirhams a year and I find that very expensive. It seems that they have small class sizes, though, which is important to me. I find the British system to be too academic at an early age. I may not be the best person to ask, though, because I generally have a negative opinion about schools here....

Hi, I recently moved back to Dubai and have a few questions regarding schools: 1. Do your children go to an American or British system school? 2. If British, how do you feel it compares to the American system? 3. If American, do you feel that is the same level, better or worse than the one back home? Can it be compared to the public school system or is more on the private school level? I am trying to decide between systems. My LO's are currently in the british, I feel it's more of a memorization system rather than making the children understand the concepts of why things are. Thanks in advance! I am American but my children are in the British system. Personally, I feel that it is worse than back home. They would be getting a better education in the American public school system. I wish that I could send them to an American school here, but they are way too expensive...

Some play areas let you drop off but it's normally from older than one. You could try Peekaboo at MOE, I remember seeing quite young children dropped there. Alternatively you could get a regular agency maid in to care for your little one if you would be comfortable with that. Is that place still open?

On a positive, parents who never before did are buckling their children NOT because they have to, because they WANT to. And this is the reason why. This lady has changed lives. I hope she leaves knowing she has not given up, this was bigger than her and she did a great deal in its life. If she saved one life, she SAVED ONE LIFE. Well done! Give it time now. It will breathe. Now that an expat has stepped away the change can be a local initiative drawn by the locals. not a response to expat demand. So why did it take an expat to start it in the first place then ? Overlooking the popint and the way things go. We brought this with us. It took an expat because it is not a big deal here however it is to a western expat. We have a reputation for being **** and thinking we do everything the perfect way and so when we start to complain regarding how things are done, the we do it better and who does not do it the way we do it is not evolved sign flashes above our heads, giving the listener the instant reaction of getting defensive. So even when they agree, the do not do it as they think it tells the person with the sign above their head that they were right. It is petty politics practiced all over the world. Nay, it is human instinct to be the better one. Is it just me or did none of that actually make sense ? That this is not understood is the exact reason people will never understand why things do not change. Seeing what it is and calling it as it is takes the blinders off. No, actually I think it's just bad grammar. Just calling it as it is, of course. Londiamond, what is your native language?

Anon, have you considered sending your daughters there? It would be a smart move, given that they would make friends with girls from the most influential families, helping them with future schooling, job possibilities, future spouse, etc. I believe the school follows British curriculum. I have a Russian-American friend (married to a local) whose daughter attends. Apricot, my daughter was not accepted there. I did not pursue it further...

When I went there, I saw a very blonde white girl that really could not have been a mixed-ethnicity child. She stuck out like a sore thumb there. I would think that you would need a lot of wasta to send your daughter there if she is not Emirati. I believe that they only take 45 new students per year.

Another option that I have considered recently is just getting a good quality clothes dryer. All of the clothes that are wrinkled can go in there. If you take them out and hang them up as soon as the cycle is finished, they will not be wrinkled. For anything that needs extra care, you can just drop it off at the nearest mosque laundry... This will eliminate the need for a maid to do the ironing! Even clothes that come out of the drier still need ironing. I have been told that that is not the case...

I do supply my maids with toiletries but nothing is brand-specific. I don't necessarily buy them the cheapest toiletries. I just tend to buy what is on sale in bulk at the end of the aisles, which I also do for myself. I would tell her that you will buy which brand you see fit unless there is really a specific reason for a certain brand...

Clicking on this thread this evening has left such a bitter taste in my mouth. How sad to see fellow Scottish 'ladies' being so disrespectful of anothers point of view & being down right patronizing. I normally have a sense of home & camaraderie when I see a Scottish reference or name among the threads, clearly here is not the place for that. There is one particular poster who is frequently patronizing about most subjects. She mainly comes on here to patronize...

Ahh this could be me posting this to be honest.. have really been struggling to find someone too!! We also have 2 dogs and a baby and I think that does put most of them off :/ Apart from the obvious the 2 most annoying things is not showing up to interviews and asking where I am from the second I ring them.. a bit ridiculous that I have to be interviewed on the phone before I can even ask 2 questions about them! Anyone know of any agencies that can help? x There are lots of agencies here but you have to be willing to pay a lot in agency recruitment fees. I have just heard that they are charging 16,000 for Indonesians now. Sri Lankans have a recruitment fee of 9000. Blimey! Is that including visa costs? No, it is not. That is purely what you pay the agent to bring the maid over. Wau! this is just too much! Yes, the price has been increasing exponentially over the years...

In my opinion, I find that maids who have experience working in Arab countries are the best. I have had maids with and without this and the ones with are so much better. The latter tend to know how to do everything so they don't need to be trained. They just need to adapt to a new household. I would be hesitant to take on a first timer, not because of their lack of experience, but because of homesickness issues. What do you do if they want to go home three months into their contract because they are homesick? You have to send them home and you lose all of your money...

You could have a live-in nanny or you could use an agency to find a maid. A maid from an agency will not make demands on you regarding public transportation. Have you considered putting your baby in a nursery once you go back to work?

That happened to me too. The first day I dropped my DD off at nursery, I cried for quite a while afterwards. I kept on thinking that I had made a big mistake by enrolling her in nursery. I could hear her screaming as I left the nursery. Eventually she got used to it and loved it! It is so frightening for them when they are little because they are too young to understand that you are coming back later. For all they know, you may never come back!
