It's not racism anyway. Europeans come in all different colors and religions.... lol But I am betting that the maids who write these types of ads only consider you European if you have white skin... I wonder what goes through their simple minds when they meet an English person of Indian descent or a French woman wearing a niqab... lol edited by AnonDubai on 08/04/2015

I was in a store today called Sports One at Al Ghurair Center. They had a really good selection of children's cover-all swimming suits. Unfortunately, they told me that that is their only branch in Dubai. I got a few swimsuits at 79 dirhams each.

Sure, they are not made here, but could it be that the digital clocks destined for the UAE are the rejects of other countries with higher electronic standards? My car clock is one of the only ones I can rely on. The Al Fajr digital clocks are good but they are not glow-in-the-dark. edited by AnonDubai on 04/04/2015

All our clocks run fast too and they were fine in the UK. I've also noticed that the clock in the car gains, though not by as much as the house ones. Interesting! So do you think that it is something about the electricity in this country?

I don't think it's due to the magnetism. Although I am usually a staunch defender of shopping in this country, I think that almost all the digital clocks sold here are of low quality. I have noticed songs running slower on the radio occasionally.

Thanks for the info. I imagine that those digital clocks are more expensive than your average ones but definitely worth it. I will head to Virgin soon.

Hmmm...wait till you see the salary!:) I was just about to write the same thing. And tbh, you probably don't even need to be a qualified teacher for your application to be considered. If you have a university degree, that may be enough. Or you may not even need that if you are on a house wife's visa!

What about brands like Khazna or Rawda? I don't know if they are free-range but they don't appear to be pumped full of hormones because they are really small. You can only buy them in one size and they are never frozen.

The old tefal takes 40 mins , my mum has one, not sure about the new one. Philips takes 20-25 mins for 1kgs of fresh potatoes. I like it for samosa and kibbeh as those I can't oven fry them , with Tifal you can't fry samosa or kibbeh, they will end up mashed. Why can't you fry samosas with the Tefal? That is one of the reasons I got it!

CP and Anon, how long does the Tefal Actifry take to make a batch of french fries? Last time I checked, it took 40 min per batch, which is a bit longer than when I bake french fries from fresh raw potatoes in my fan oven. (I coat the potato pieces in veg oil and Ina Paarman's Potato Spice prior to baking.) That's the first thing we made today! 4 potatoes took 20 minutes.

the one with the baby crying thanks to the expertise of the medical team are equally as cringeworthy to me. YES!!!!!!!! This advert actually gives me the rage!! The child was born safely because of the lovely plants in the room!! ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Natalie de Wit was probably born at 36 weeks, by scheduled c-section due to her mother being told she was a big baby, weighing 3.5 kg, and then requiring a few days in the NICU because of the preterm delivery at a cost of 200,000 dirhams. edited by AnonDubai on 17/03/2015

Good plan! If the center of Dubai is the Dubai Mall, then it will take you about 15-20 minutes to get there. Mamzar and Jumeira are at an equal distance from Mirdif/Warqa. It would take you about 30 minutes to get to either one.

Any clues to where this is? Rashidiya? would people who are exempt live in Rashidiya? More likely to be Mizhar, Jumeirah or Al Khavaneej no? No, Purple. Locals in Rashidiya are equal to locals in the suburbs you mentioned.

Mirdif and Warqa are definitely not in the middle of nowhere. However, unless you live in the Uptown Mirdif apartments, you are going to need a car for every place you want to go to, including your school. It is possible that your school will provide a small car for yourself and three other employees and you would all share responsibility for that car....

Hi - are the fun begins! The supermarket in the Marina Mall is called Waitrose, one of the UK supermarkets, with huge range of UK products. Spinneys i& Waitrose are probably the most popular with the expat community. I think they are also the only 2 supermarkets where you can buy pork. If you live in the Marina, GEANT based in Ibn Battuta Mall is very good. There's also Choitherms in the Greens and Carrefour in the Mall of the Emirates. ETA - prices do vary quite extensively. GOOD Magazine does a comparison each month on the best places to get certain products. To save it will take some major work on shopping everywhere and getting the bargains! Good Luck edited by pollydxb1 on 14/03/2015 Pork is also available in smaller supermarkets - Choithram's, Park and Shop, Al Mayer, Jones the Grocer, etc. Shopping on-line is a great time saver. Geant and trolley.ae (Aswaq) are two of the places offering this service. Are you saying that Aswaaq and trolley.ae are the same company?

I believe we both have toddlers at the same age, my little one will also start same time but in my opinion and my personal choice I'd definitely not put her on the bus. Are you holding yours back a year as well? 2.5 now. He'll be 4 when he starts school. Hi HC! Has the school agreed that your son can start FS1 at age 4? Anon what have you decided about your FS child - I believe he will start the next year? Yes. My son will start FS 1 in September at the age of 3 years and 2 months. What did you end up doing?

You can teach here and in many other countries with the PGCE from the University of Sunderland. I know because I have it. However, if you want to teach in the UK, it is not enough. You would need to obtain QTS there. edited by AnonDubai on 04/03/2015 hey Anon, Is your pgce certificate approved here in Dubai? Is it legalised by the embassy of the uae and the other authorities ? And does your certificate has a stamp on it that says that it's distant learning degree? Like I mentioned before , university of sunder is NOT mentioned on the list of recommended e-learning universities by ministery of higher education of UAE. only university of Nottingham is mentioned. Unfortunately Nottingham not option for me Otherwise I wil definitely choose it instead of sunderland. ... I just want to be sure then sorry. It cost a lot of money... Thanks I can't answer your first two questions because I don't know the answer. I know that my certificate allows me to teach in schools here that require qualified teachers. I completed the course in 2006. It was not a distance-learning degree then. In fact, none of my coursework was done online. I attended classes here in Dubai and did a teaching practice with mentors and frequent observations. The course cost me 26,000 dirhams!

It stands for Qualified Teacher Status. I believe that it means another year of studies in the UK. I don't know anything further about it because I knew that I would never be teaching in the UK when I decided to do the PGCE with The U of Sunderland.

It must be very draining for him to be in a loveless relationship. I don't know why he is so unwilling to make any compromises. Surely he could benefit from having a wife who is partially happy. I am guessing that he'll say no to this, but it's worth a try. Have you considered couples counseling? edited by AnonDubai on 02/03/2015

My DH does it everyday from the Mirdif area. Fortunately, he carpools so only has to drive max twice a week. Personally, I don't think it is a permanent solution, but if it is just to finish off the school year, it's fine. I would start looking at accommodation and schools in Abu Dhabi.
