I have a similar issue, combined with patches of my scalp on which new hair fails to grow back. I am seriously considering purchasing the generic version of Rogaine from the pharmacy and starting daily applications. I don't think it's a vitamin related issue as the hair remaining on my scalp is long and lush. I too have a Blu filter on my shower, combined with a So Soft water filter.

I haven't given them the flu vacccine, they do get sick each year but I'm hoping it's just due to their age group (5 and 3 now). However, I take my maid for the shot every year as she gets really sick every time the kids get the flu. It helps a little.

i buy either the hotel collection from Home Centre, or Dwell, when they have a sale. Dwell stocks this amazing Italian brand called Zucca. My friend was in Italy on a research scholarship and her lab partner dragged her to the Zucca sale to buy bed sheets, they are fabulous!

I second Cold Stone creamery, have bought my kids birthday cakes from there 2 yrs in a row. Yesterday saw that Bloomsbury Cupcakes makes cheaper red velvet cakes than Magnolia, More, etc in Dubai mall, they also custom-make fondant decorated birthday cakes. the Angry Birds design on display looked really nice. <em>edited by Apricot on 04/10/2013</em>

Burj Al Hamam on the Beach Rd (in Beach Rd Plaza) is quite swish and no alcohol served. Stick to the meat/chicken and the food is great, the veg appetisers not so great. Zaafran in Madinat, India Palace in Garhoud, Lemongrass opp Lamcy Plaza serve great cuisine in a nice setting, no alcohol. Taj Palace Hotel in Deira is completely dry and has really good Turkish and Indian restaurants.

I asked my middle class Emirati friend and she suggested Golden Chance Abaya tailors in Satwa. They give me additional discount due to my dad's ethnic heritage. But I'd love to tag along with EmmaRitz's SIL!! My upper class Emirati friends get their abayas made either at First Lady (Pink Mall) or Elite Fashions (Palm Strip Mall), but Tousih in The Village Mall is apparently the bee's knees.

Thanks ladies, i have looked it up over the internet and it seems like this is indeed the problem, however I cant find any detailed video that can show me how to fix it. The gas oven is pretty basic and I don't see and nozzles or screws that can be turned to regulate the air/gas mixture. Still trying to figure it out. Sunlight if you have any link to a relevant video will be so thankful.I had this issue and fixed it by bringing in some repairmen "technicians" from the shop I bought the stove from. Hope this is resolved soon. Btw, I found Good Maid scouring powder at C4 and it's just like Ajax. Growing up, spent every Sat and Sun AM inhaling Ajax as I settled into household chores, while listening to NPR and thinking about latest assignment/ project due. <em>edited by Apricot on 01/10/2013</em>

Thanks Derien! My SIL is much nicer, "They don't think of it as stealing, they just observe that we are financially capable of replacing the missing items." When we lived together in FIL's home, the maids would steal lingerie from both of us, then when questioned about missing items would say "oh both you madams wear same size, I mix up, so sorry, maybe you find next week" We informed MIL when it persisted but MIL is physically infirm and not willing to hire on and train new staff. Eventually one of the thieving maids absconded in her home country and we released a collective breath of relief :)

Two books 1 Princess 2 Mayada both by jean sassons Sorry but these books are very far from reality. There is a certain genre of books about Arab/ near Eastern women written from a prejudiced perspective, based on the testimony of a few women who are keen to break their culture's taboos. For me, Princess read like this: "Boo hoo, I read Anais Nin but my husband, who's also my first cousin, refuses to have a threesome. Gee, I hate my culture and my country and wish I was born somewhere else, but I still want my five children to love and respect and honor me because my culture says that heaven is at the feet of the mother." Would you rely on that character to give you an accurate portrayal of a foreign culture? That's like assuming all women in California behave like the Kardashian family.

a lot of the maid agencies in Deira and Satwa have maids waiting in their offices, maids whose initial sponsors (the ones who paid the plane tix and documentation fees in maid's home country) decided the maid didn't fit in their homes so they have been "returned" to agency. My cousin has hired 2 pleasant Arabic speaking Indonesian maids this way. Get ahold of the free "Al Waseet" Arabic newspaper on Friday and call up every published phone number. Most of the staff speak English. Foorsa ma'ak.

Panty liners Quality sanitary napkins Burt's Bee or other 'natural' baby skin care (reasonably priced). Aveeno facial cream the list could go on and on....Sounds like you need someone back home to make a trip to CVS or Target and send you a care package :) Re the panty liners I tried the Amani brand and they're really nice.

One thing that adds to queues is attendants who are busy washing the windscreen and rear window while other cars are done and waiting to pay and leave; that is a voluntary service and think it should be banned if there is a queueNo attendant in the past 6 months has offered to wash my car's windscreen and rear window, regardless of queues or the relative dustiness of car exterior. Is that service still provided?

lol! Well i kinda have been doing that! I have a selection of jeans from size 8 up to 14! I just cant face throwing the size 8's out as I truly believe that one day I will fit into them again (delusional!) Man I just love food!!My mantra is Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels. It helped me leave the size 14 and 16 jeans, and re-buy the size 8. Untoasted almonds and walnuts assuaged most cravings.

Arch I'm with you...not enough servo's round the place with easy access/exit. Forecourts WAY too small and fiddly to accommodate petrol/carwash/food shops etc and then you get the numpties who wander off to have a snack inside. Bit like the supermarkets here really...I detest having to go to shopping centres to access C4...give me a freestanding supermarket to get in, do my shopping and get out! It's getting better...hope the new C4 on Al Wasl Road is "SIMPLE" for busy busy people. Try C4 Shindagha, comes closest to being "freestanding" and has decent shaded parking area on right side of building, directly accessible from main road.

I really liked And The Mountains Echoed. Most sub-plots were well developed and plausible. I feel each of his novels are stand-alone, each touches diff elements of what it means to be Afghani. My least fave was A Thousand Splendid Suns, yet it's certainly a product of the time during which the novel was written.

I got nominated last year for DS's KG1 class. Besides the introductory coffee morning, I organized the mum's contributions to the school bake sale, arranged some play dates after school, organized the teachers' end-of-year gifts. Asked for parent involvement at teacher's request and it always fell through, so I ended up being the teacher helper. Sent a lot of text message reminders. Attended a bunch of Parent rep meetings in the mornings, which were time consuming but mildly entertaining. The only nasty bit was a mum who called me every time she was upset with the school admin. After chatting with all the other mums individually, she was the only one who was disgruntled so I informed the school admin and ignored her thereafter. There was also a mum who wanted every mother to purchase an expensive personalized outfit from her friend's business for a class performance. I felt the teacher's dress code guidelines were more practical, and ignored the mum. <em>edited by Apricot on 23/09/2013</em>

Alternatives to Euro Disney: Alton Towers in England and Europa Park in Germany. I grew up visiting Disneyland in Los Angeles, as a parent I was thoroughly charmed by Alton Towers, it's so refreshingly "unbranded". Everyone I know who has been to Europa Park has preferred it to Euro Disney or would visit again. We're booked in for our second visit to Hong Kong Disneyland pretty soon.

Apparently, it's not just the formulation but also the packaging that makes a difference. Repeated exposure to air rapidly decreases the efficacy of the active ingredients. Tubes and pump dispensers are the way to go. I rely on beautypedia dot com for recommendations.

The Walk JBR might have more options that fit "family dining, not too expensive" than The Palm. Unless you have entertainer vouchers for places like Rixos Hotel or Seafire/Kaleidascope/Saffron at Atlantis. We take our young children to Bob's Easy Diner or BBQ Delights at The Walk, or PF Changs (l love their kids menu) or Texas Roadhouse, or any Lebanese restaurant (we order a Shish Tawook platter for them, mild grilled chicken and french fries). We took them to Burj Al Hamam, a fancy Lebanese place at Beach Plaza a few months ago. That place is always filled with celebratory family groups and their meat and chicken dishes are awesome. Apart from the shanklish fresh cheese salad, moutabbel/ baba ghanoush and plain hummus, the veggie warm and cold starters, not so great.

Yes,healthy food options are scarce unless you want to eat subway all the time. Been on diet and its always a struggle when going to the mall and everyone is hungry to find a place that has healthy options too. Sumo Salad in Dubai Mall and Mirdif City Centre can be healthy and low-carb. Other healthy food court options: Grilled chicken (shish tawook), grilled paneer tikka, a baked potato with plain tuna/chicken and broccoli, beets, corn (no butter, cheese, mayo, sour cream) from the baked potato carts or London Fish n Chips, child's portion of pasta with tomato based sauce n mixed veggies n protein from the pasta n pizza kiosk.
