Not really. I own 5 but have had disasters with all of them! I own "Food from Biblical Lands" by Helen Corey; "Lebanese Cookbook" by Dawn, Elaine and Selwa Anthony; "Anahid's Gourmet Cookbook" by Anahid Doniguian; "Stuffed Vine Leaves Saved My Life" by Nadia Sawalha (bargain book); "Mediterranean Street Food" by Anissa Helou. I rely most on Anahid's Gourmet Cookbook (her Lebanese and Armenian recipes seem most like the food my husband's Lebanese relatives cook) and "Food from Biblical Lands" even though Helen Corey's family is Syrian but her recipes resemble my mother in law's Egyptian cooking, esp in absence of fresh herbs and spices. Luckily my dad loves to read the food sections of newspapers so he emails me a weekly digest of recipes to try out , and he sends me links to Arabic cooking websites and blogs. I really like www.desertcandy.com, www.yasalamcooking.com and www.dirtykitchensecrets.com, and the cooking page called Sultan's Kitchen on a forum called www.visajourney.com DH eats a lot of disastrous versions of his mom's, dad's and aunts' cooking (he comes from a multi-country Arab family!) before I adjust the cookbook or website recipe to his taste. My friends rely on Complete Book of Middle Eastern cooking by Tess Mallos but i never bought it and it seems a bit late after 5 Arab cookbooks and some other Middle Eastern cookbooks (Iranian, Moroccan, 2 Turkish, 3 general Med, 1 Khaleeji) on the shelf.

Sadly, I have also been to Book Munch twice and--while I love the concept and the menu and the decor and the books and the friendly staff--I will only be back for coffee as both times I found the food very poorly executed. I would be interested to hear from the people who reported "great food"-- what dishes do you recommend? Maybe I just chose badly?DH and i had a lunch date at Book Munch a few weeks ago. DH enjoyed his mini burgers, I enjoyed my chicken avocado salad, chicken was well cooked, seasoned, good portion, the avocado was ripe and soft, the greens were nice, the dressing was yummy. We ordered the fruit salad with plain yogurt. this was awesome, filled with expensive berries and decently ripe fruit. Also ordered the chocolate pots, again very nice dessert of firm choc custard topped with warm choc sauce, served with a spoon shaped cookie and extra warm choc sauce, very well thought out and presented.

Can anyone share how to prepare sahlab? Thank you!Buy the packet mix. Heat suggested quantity of milk in saucepan, add suggested quantity of packet mix, cook until it gets thick and custardy, portion out into mugs, garnish each portion with cinnamon/ dry coconut to taste. I've seen the packet mix behind the deli at Union Coop, and in random sections of Carrefour. Sometimes with other dessert mixes, sometimes with spices, sometimes with tea/coffee. Is camel milk easily available to try it with do you know? Yes, you find camel milk next to the normal cows milk in the grocery store. Two brands, Camelait by Al Ain dairy and Camelicious. Personally I wouldn't use camel milk in sahleb since it is more salty and savory tasting, and may compete with sahleb's delicate floral taste.

I like and buy the Union Coop frozen white fish fillets. They are sold in 1 kg bags with red lettering. These fish come from Asmaak fish farms in Abu Dhabi. I use these to make pan fried fish or fried fish n chips for my kids and the fish doesn't taste fishy. Another good brand of frozen white fish fillets is Siblou, but it is 40% more expensive. I haven't had success with buying cream dory fillets at Spinneys or Carrefour so I stick with the frozen white fillets. Believe me, this fish tastes much better than US tilapia or catfish. At the fish souk, Faskar is the sustainable equivalent to hammour now.

Traveling on Beach Rd towards Burj Al Arab, merge into the bylane after Sunset Mall. There's a masjid btwn Barakat and My Gym and they have English khutbah. If you email JILC (Jumeira Islamic Learning Ctr) at [email protected] they should be able to help you further with this one. The masaajid in Al Ghusais have Urdu khutbah. One neighborhood masjid in Barsha 2 has Urdu khutba, it's located off the turning for street 28, behind a govt girls school. Personally I ask my DH for a quick summary afterwards. The National newspaper prints an English summary of the official khutba for Abu Dhabi mosques every Friday in the front section.

It's permissable to have a male doctor IF there's no other option available. I was referred by my Muslim female gynecologist to a Muslim male gynecological surgeon when she needed a second, expert opinion. I kept my head-scarf on, wore a standard examination gown, his female nurse draped me with a big green tablecloth with a cut out square over the examinable area before he entered. He invited my husband to come in also, but my husband declined!

When breastfeeding, I have opted to fast one day, then skip the second, fast the third day, etc. I prepare the following suhoor: before sleep, place 3 stoned dates in a cereal bowl, pour over milk to cover, then cover bowl w plastic wrap and keep in fridge. At Suhoor (before Fajr), I warm up the milk and dates and then add weetabix or porridge or bran flakes cereal. This, along with 1-2 big glasses of water, really helped me keep up breast-feeding while fasting. Also, do the obvious like avoid being outside when the temp is high (9.30 am to 4pm) to avoid water loss thru sweating. Also make lots of du'a asking Allah SWT to help you in your efforts to obey Him. However, my children have never been as young as 8 weeks. They have been at least 7 months old and their diet was supplemented with additional water and solid food. Personally, I wouldn't fast, but if you really want to, I would suggest you start with every 4th or 5th day, and see how you and baby feel. edited by Apricot on 07/07/2013

I really like the Hotel Collection bed linen at Home Centre, it's almost as good as my favorite Sheridan, Martex, Wamsutta, and Ralph Lauren sheets at a much lower price. Another good one (which goes on sale every 4 months) is Chen One. Their bedsheets are very good quality and are durable over repeated washes in washing machine. I've tried Pottery Barn Kids bedsheets (80% off sale 2 years ago) and they are also very nice, esp when bought on sale. Zara Home and The One also have decent cotton bedlinen (currently on sale). Least durable bed sheets are Ikea, DKNY and Calvin Klein. An aunt sold bedlinen in an upmarket dept store and she saw a lot of angry customers trying to exchange/ return their machine-washed sheets!

I agree alot of Expat's arent running to the UK for treatment. I know of someone recently, who was born in the UK never paid into the system, lived in Dubai since she was 3 years old, and she walked into the UK to give birth!!! just feel its so wrong!!Sadly, I am related through my step-mum to about 50 people in this category. They show up in the UK to give birth, return to live abroad without contributing any UK taxes on their income, then return to the UK when they have serious and expensive health issues. Then they have the GALL to justify their actions. I don't pity them when they are hit with financial problems.

We drove but in my friend's Jeep Monster Truck so it took 7 hours! Normally I think it takes 4 - 5. With kids and their need for bathroom breaks and breaks to stretch their legs, I would suggest 7-8 hrs. DH and I did this drive with our 2 DSs when they were 3 and 1 and it took 10 hrs. The resort is 45 min drive from Muscat proper. I've stayed in Al Waha once (Ramadan offer) and they made such a bungle of our final bill that I've stayed at Al Bandar (the middle hotel) since.

Hi freaking92, glad to hear that your cake was a success! I make strawberry cake for various family birthdays. Apricot's Strawberry Cake 1. Make strawberry concentrate: defrost 250-300 g packet frozen strawberries in a sieve over a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave the liquid for 5 min at 70% power, (stop halfway and check, stir) until reduced. Combine thawed fruit, 1-2 tsp lemon juice and reduced liquid in blender and process until smooth, adding more lemon juice to taste if required. 2. Mix together: 1 packet white cake mix, 1 packet cherry gelatin, 4 T plain flour, 1 cup veg oil, 1/2 c sugar, 1/2 c full fat milk, 4 large eggs, half of the strawberry concentrate. Scrape down bowl, increase mixer speed to medium (3 on Kenwood stand mixer) and beat for 2 min. 3. Divide batter among 3 9-in pans, or 4 8-in pans or 1 sheet pan plus 1 8-or 9-in round cake pan, greased, floured and lined. Bake at 180 C for 30-35 min. Cool on wire racks completely while preparing frosting. Frosting: 4 oz butter (can use 2 oz salted and 2 oz unsalted to balance the sugar), softened to room temp, 500 g icing sugar sifted, 1/4-1/2 cup strawberry concentrate. 1. Place butter in mixing bowl, beat at low speed until fluffy. Add about 1/3 to 1/2 the icing sugar and 2-3 T strawberry concentrate. Keep stopping and adding just enough of the sugar and strawberry concentrate until desired sweetness and texture is obtained. Then continue to beat the icing until it is fluffy and aerated.

My veggie Arab husband really likes the food at Zaroob Restaurant on Sheikh Zayed Rd. In addition to the fabulous starters, they have two great veggie main dishes: Egyptian koshary (black lentils, short rice, spaghetti, topped with insanely spicy tomato sauce and fried onions) and stuffed felafels (felafels stuffed with tomato-red chili paste). The venue has lots of distinctly Arab character and has a fun, youthful vibe. Another place to go (with easier parking but less frenetic energy) is Leila restaurant in Mirdif City Centre. Their vegetarian selection is fabulous and they also make the stuffed felafels.

You want to look for a brick of processed cheese in a cardboard carton in the cheese aisle. If you want the white color, then Bega makes a processed white brick cheese (light blue cardboard carton) (I found it at Carrefour and Coop). If you want a yellow color, then Velveeta and Al Marai make this.

A basic alternative to wall paper would be a decorative paint treatment like sponge painting or a simple repeated stenciled design. You can buy the supplies for DIY sponge painting at Ace, or you could hire someone to do it for you. It looks best using a water-based, non glossy indoor paint.

I make this quite often: Bring to boil in saucepan on med low flame: 700 ml milk, 100g sugar, stirring often. Once boiling add: 100 g short grained rice (I use Egyptian rice), washed and 250 ml water. Stir well. Let mix reach another boil, then lower flame. Stir very often, making sure rice not sticking to bottom of pan. Will take 45 min from second boil for the rice to become creamy. Once 30 min have passed you can add flavorings like powdered mastic, rose water/ orange blossom water, or whole spices. Stir often, cook for further 15 min, then take off heat. Can add vanilla essence, if using at this stage. Let cool 15 min, then either serve or spoon into single-serving dishes, cover with plastic wrap and chill in fridge 1-2 hrs. You can buy Egyptian rice by weight from the bulk bins in Carrefour/ Union Coop ( I usually only buy 1 scoop worth!) and you can make the pudding creamier by increasing the fat content of the milk.

My 3 yr old DS is really scared of theaters, he doesn't like the dim lights. He wants to lie down on the floor and hide from the performers. He is also a fidgeter. I'm limiting it to situations where I know the lights are on and we can make a quick escape if necessary. We watched the "City of Friends" show at Mercato the other day (the Arabic version of the cartoon is a firm favorite with DSs) and only 10 min into the show did he relax and start to enjoy it, rather than try to leave. So, you alone can decide this one :)

Yes and yes and yes. They used to have a restriction on only being able to check out books which they had 2 copies of, you may have to check if this is still the case. There are English books in almost every dedicated subject hall (2 walls have Arabic books, 2 walls have English books). Novels are upstairs, most non fiction is downstairs. English cookbooks are in a hall called "Women's Studies", next to the feminist books. Arabic cookbooks are in the Emirati culture hall.

What about Children's Garden? I think it goes up to 5-6 My kids are at Childrens Garden. In PS1 (age 4-5) DS1 has been learning phonics in English and Arabic since Sept. He can now write his name in Arabic from memory and needs a gentle nudge to do the same in English. He is curious about writing, and produces nice writing samples in class. There is a huge difference between the curriculums of TCG and JBS at the PS1/KG1 level in that JBS places greater academic demands, I talk to the mums of kids who were my son's classmates in previous years at TCG, but then opted to switch their kids to the "big school" at age 4. DS1 spends a lot more time doing learning through play and artistic expression and only has homework at my insistence (mainly to improve his fine motor skills like cutting shapes with scissors or tracing dotted lines).

Apologies for hijacking the thread, but what can I wear underneath the skirt so it is not so see through? I have seen MANY ladies wearing these maxi dresses/skirts without knowing that you can see their underwear...You can buy cotton slips and thin cotton leggings at Lulu (lingerie area) and Sana Fashions (random old-school Dubai dept store in Karama) for a pittance.
