Its very easy to act as a wind up merchant, let me try "Why should an important man have to deal with a measly taxi driver, he was probably on a very important call, and if you care so much about about being hit, maybe you should not take a taxi and should drive yourself" lol, seriously speaking though, i have always been surprised by the large no of self important people in Dubai, and that number seems ot be increasing day by day. No if someone swerves into my lane, and i use my horn, half the time the other guy gets angry... Some people get a maid/Porsche/villa and think its a license to act arrogant as payback for all those days when they were stuck in a small apartment.

entering SZR shouldnt be a problem as long as you take the road after Icon towers. However given O2's location, going to O2 from SZR might be a problem in the evening considering the huge jams we see betwee 5 and 7 everyday... The O2 is the newest residential tower in JLT so dont thik there will be many mould problems yet

No. You are not SUPPOSED to give full-time workers Eid off. If that was the case the mall, gas stations and every store in the region would be closed. Unless she is Muslim (then you may consider) Gas stations work on shifts, so even if some workers may work during Eid, it is entirely possible that Muslim workers are taking 2 days off As for malls Dubai is the only place i have seen where mall shops are open 365 days, even in Abu Dhabi, they generally close the morning of Eid...

. Government workers are the only ones who get this time off by law. Good luck in your decision. :) Wrong, even private workers are entitled to Eid off, if they haev to work (or govt workers for that matter), they are given a day in lieu or overtime or some other compensation...

They are thieves, and if i had time and DH with me, we would have called the RTA on the spot, many drivers are maniacs so dont try it if you are alone, but with a man, its best to have them punished..... And while taxi drivers in neighbouring emirates have it bad, Dubai ones in comparison do quite well with tourists and also good tips from many passengers.....too bad some of them want to scam you as well...

I can understand it in busy clusters, but in my cluster, there are 3 floors of parking, 1 is always empty, and ther is ~10% full, so something like 50 cars in 500 spaces, so would they be charging here as well ? :)

most places will get busy, in Dubai or outside. The park near the foot of Jabal Hafeet in Alain isnt bad, but will be crowded; Hatta may be another option.

Because so many non-Muslim expats complained about the sound of the Adhan, so now they have given them their own area, minus the traditional sounds. It would be sad if thats true, why would Downtown be designated anyone's " area" , when even predominantly expat areas like JLT have Mosques ? edited by Arch on 28/10/2011

There was the story a few months ago about a Canadian who was jailed for having cold medication on him because it contained a controlled substance that was not allowed in UAE. It's not worth the risk! Nobody can say 'but I'm Canadian / British / Australian etc' as an excuse. How was he suppsoed to know that a simple cold medication could have somthing that is "controlled" ? As for codeine, it is well known that is not allowed, but is codeine harmful in general ?

i didnt really see many posts making fun of their accents, most posts talk about a lack of common sense in CS.... Even then I think it would be ok to talk about at least some of the "accents" given how Filipinos tend to believe they have a great accent; "snuck", "chokolaait" and "pipty" notwithstanding :)

hi everyone :) We are planning a trip to Muscat over Eid and am wondering what it is like in Muscat? Like what are the best 3-4 things to see ? Also has anyone driven rental cars to Oman, and if they have, do we need any form of "permission" or "letter" from the rental company ? i have heard Oman Insurance is required which we can purchase at the border, but would anything else be needed Thanks :)

Weather is not exactly like Dubai weather in any month. It the same as South Asian cities in August. 32-33 during daytime. If its sunny, its not comfortable to walk long distances between 12 and 4pm Evenings are 26-30, so its more comfortable but its almost always a bit humid . Rain is there on many days but through small bursts and not day long rain In KL temperatures stay roughly the same all 12 months, Up north in penang and Langkawi, Nov-Feb is slightly cooler with less rain

Diamon Marina buildings arent in the best of shape, for the same price one can find stuff far better in JLT. Lake Terrace and Indigo are both good towers and close to the metro Lake view is an extra 5 minutes walking but its a good tower as well . Dubai Gate is not that good Concorde is in the back row and is around 10 minutes from the metro, but i have heard of some 'stuff" over there though the building itself is quite good . Arch is quite good and ~12 min from the metro, MAG214 is good as well. You can try the X1/X3 towers and O2 Tower both of which are the newest towers in JLT

I know of one case in UAE where a British nurse stopped on the Al Ain Road (to Dubai) to assist at a traffic accident - the victim later died. She was jailed for a few days BUT it was to protect HER from the grieving family (who were understandably upset at their relative's death - and perhaps not behaving rationally) - she was jailed until they could get her out of the country. She did not have to pay any blood money - however she did have to leave for her own personal safety. ). Lets not try to sugarcoat things: a good samaritan jailed to "protect" her? And she did end up having to leave, why should a good samaritan be treated like this ? In this Chinese case, whats causing people to be shocked is not that the people didnt help her, but that no one even looked at her nor did anyone stop...

Its honestly not worth it .. I have just forked out Thousands for my full time live in not to mention countless hours running back and forth between typists/immigration etc etc it is tempting to pick up one of the notes left under your door and have somone come and do a couple of hours whenever but hearing all these stories of deportation, fines, humiliation its not worth it ... it really isnt ... Of course its not worth it: but does one maid working for another employer affect society so badly ? i think someone driving recklessly is harming society much more than a maid working part time....

That's totally amazing for the police to tell you its not illegal because it is absolutely illegal in the UAE to take photos of anyone without their knowledge or permission. You had every right to complain. it strange really, on 1 hand 2 men were jailed for taking pics of the Yas F1 Circuit, and here we have police saying its not illegal to take pics of people !

Sorry, but its because they love kids??? Really? you think strangers taking photos of other peoples children (whether they're white or not) is because they love kids??? Also I really don't see how you've gotten out of this thread that children are getting attention because of their color?? There is a huge difference with people giving attention to your child and saying they're cute etc etc to taking sneaky photographs, or taking photographs at all. edited by AdviceSeeker on 12/10/2011 I dont see where N Kaye said anything different. taking pics of children, particularly when the shooters dont ask permission, is creepy and is not encouraged in any culture that we know of....

Why didn't you report it? Why assume it's cultural? What culture? Dodgy blokes taking pics of kids is NOT cultural. Report the buggers but still feel maybe should have been done at the time. One more thing.....in general.....and cultural....take note. please - enough with the assumptions that your child gets attention because of your colour. My kid isn't blonde and we get lots of attention. Don't think I've ever been anywhere and not had it. Always women or families. Never men!! Babies are seen as a wonderful blessing and the attention you get is out of love and they genuinely like babies. All babies. We've been conditioned in the west to fear any adult that comes near your baby. So yep - sure this incident was/is unacceptable. Quite frankly any men taking pics is. It would just be nice not to assume you get attention because you're white and that all bad behavior is 'someone' elese culture. Nope, it's they love kids. . You have my respect ! Many people love babies and they will often ooh-aah over any cute baby and just "blond, blue eyed" babies As for culture, i dont know any culture where its acceptable to take pics of people or their kids without permission, neither Arab nor South Asian and definitely not western.

. They insist they are from those countries, until I ask where there parents are from. Usually I just shut up, but when an Arab (I am Arab) tells me and insists he is from Canada, I have to ask him "well how is it that you look Arab and speak Arabic?" - then There is a subtle difference; if they migrated to Canada themselves, they shouldnt get annoyed. but why should a child whose parents moved from Lebanon 50 years back have to say they are Lebanese when they themselves grew up in Canada I know quite a few British Asians whose parents migrated from Uganda and Kenya to the Uk Should they say they are "originally from Uganda" ?

Arch, this is wrong when applied to Iranians, they have national pride inbuilt, no matter if they are 10 generations down the line, they will never say they are from somewhere else, even if they have lived there for 40 years or so... edited by Alismum on 12/10/2011 So a person born to Iranian immigrants in the US will say they are Iranians and not Americans when they grow up and are asked "where are you from" ? edited by Arch on 12/10/2011

To me where you are from, is where your roots, your blood and veins is from. Which is usually where your parents are from. Where your parents are from effects your upbringing, which in the end of the day makes the you the person you are. edited by Irooni on 11/10/2011 Not always. People who have stayed 10 generations in the same town may be like that, but not people who have migrated. And people who fit the former mould often tend to think everyone is basically the same as their parents. A Pakistani who grew up in the UK will often be very different than a Pakistani who has lived in a village in Punjab or Kashmir though both may have parents from the "same place" edited by Arch on 12/10/2011

This is for those complaining about poorer workers sending their money out. http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/general/dubai-shopkeeper-dies-of-grief-1.885876 The closure of the Shindagha Market last week has dealt a fatal blow. Pakistani butcher Ghulam Shabbir died from grief just days before the shutters came down on his meat shop He couldn't afford to send his children to school anymore. Shabir couldn't even pay for his son's dialysis treat ment for kidney failure. He sent his wife and ailing son back home. Shabir was also unwell — his toes were amputated after a complication from diabetes," said the relative. There were problems even after death. His family had to pay Dh50,000 in fines before his body could be taken back to Pakistan. The fines were imposed because his son had overstayed his student visa sponsored by him[.'>[/bedited by Arch on 06/10/2011 edited by Arch on 06/10/2011

Perhaps the local economy wouldn't be so bad if so many expats didn't export 90% of their salaries, bought more stuff locally rather than shop 'n' ship and didn't use quite so many illegal (and unlicensed) vendors..... maybe then there would be more help available for so many of the disadvantaged locals (and their are many) ..... I am sure you yourself know how ridiculous that sounds. :) What % of expats use shop and ship, 2%, 3% ? And that too for possibly 10% of their purchases? For everything from cars to tvs to groceries they spend on shops here And btw, as there is no taxation here, spending on shops here wouldnt mean the UAE gets helped, it would rather be the owner of the shop, often an expat who will get a slightly higher profit margin. At the end of the day the native disadvantaged population is helped by the UAE Government. Not buying stuff at 200% margin affects the business owner, not the government. So not buying a pair of jeans which is priced 300% of what it is in the USA has nothing to do with help for the disadvantaged locals edited by Arch on 06/10/2011

. They don't mind expats living here, but they hardly ever try to integrate and they ship all of the money straight out of the country. Who ships 90% of their money outside, some blue collar workers do, [b'>because they are not allowed to bring their families over. So you want people to stay here without families and not send money to them?[/b'> As for high earners, many spend most of their money here. Then again if some of them dont spend all here cant blame them. They are always reminded they are temporary guests, so why do you expect them to spend everything here without building something elsewhere?

I agree, Mrs Orchid. I hate the culture of 'work to the bone' here. I hate the fact that DH's boss often decides he wants a meeting at 6.15pm when he's supposed to work 8 till 5. Granted, he's rarely in the office at 8 but he's never, ever, ever out of there at 5pm. He worked from 8am one day till 1.30pm the next day once without so much as a blink of recognition, because someone else stuffed up. Some weeks he gets home at 7 every night and is straight in the study working again. I sometimes want to call his boss and ask if he's a) not married or b) got an ugly wife because he never seems to care that he's disrupting our home life. He gets enough of DH's time and it winds me up that he still expects more. Its not the culture here, rather the culture with some people here. The belief that the more you work in a corporate setting the better even if you are inefficient started in Far East many years ago, now it has spread to even many Western countries except France and Australia :) There was this Tata Head who complained about British workers being inefficient because they wanted to leave at 6 pm and didnt like to come on weekends. He praised his Indian staff for staying till midnight if necessary I just read that the Indian PM, Manmohan Singh took 1 holiday in 40 years with his family simply because he is a workaholic, IMO That is nothing to be proud of

People started buying Chinese products because they are cheaper but what you save on products when shopping you pay for indirectly in other ways for example, increased unemployment, higher benefit bills, social upset, as all the manufacturing jobs have gone to China. It's disgraceful really that our politicians have allowed this to happen. No point blaming politicians. Businesses wanted to outsource, and when people would protest they would be called protectionists and even communists.

Cant compare to France. In UAE many times even if someone speaks Arabic, the other person replies in English if the Arabic of former isnt good enough, that would never happen in France. I dont think you should be able to "demand" English, but you should certainly have the right to request the reasons given in English

I never keep the dirham from the trolley, I figure it is a tiny gift to whoever finds it, but then I also tip the petrol guys ten dirhams every time, these guys have such a hard job and I appreciate them! My husband calls me the patron saint of waiters and taxi drivers. My biggest tip is 100 dhs for a taxii, it is my version of charity, but having worked for one of the largest charities in the UK, I would rather help someone who is helping themselves, as opposed to paying admin costs for superfluous costs, like coffee and petrol for admin and marketing persosnnel! Good on you for being generous. But unfortunately what happens is that some staff feel entitled to 10 dhs because one person tipped them that amount. And 100 dhs for a taxi tip ? That probably explains why one taxi driver was unhappy when i paid him 80 when meter fare was 68, he felt 100 was ok ! As for "hard job" i dont think petrol station staff have it anything hard when compared to people who clean toilets or roads under the sun or some construction workers. As for the trolley guys, i will happily give them 1 dhs, but in Abu Dhabi in 1 mall you have people who dont do anything except wait to drag your trolleys away, and some actually try to grab your trolley, no one has any right to grab someones stuff away

very simple Prado/LC and some other cars have a good reputation so their resale values are high. They are so high that it doesnt make sense to buy them 2nd hand in most cases, so its a self defeating reputation In extreme cases, sellers think people will be desperate enough to pay airfare to see a car! It always peeves me, you buy a new car for 100k, and some people wobble their heads and say u could have bought the same car for only 70k (but 70000 km on the clock!). In the UAE, in most cases ,it makes sense to buy a new car unless you get a pretty old 2nd hand .

Saudi recently banned filipina workers on the basis of the Philippines government breaching privacy with their over the top enquiries of everyday households. I agree with this. Have you seen the form employers are to fill out when maids leave the country for hols - just so they can return? It's ridiculous. i would not hand over that info to my own government!!!! Their own government CHARGES them to return to a country in which they are legally entitled to work.....who is conning whom?????? e. Ohh the poor employers! In other news a maid whose employer burnt her and tortured her in Saudi Arabia was acquited after initially being sentenced to 3 yrs in jail for "lack of proof". Nope...they won't run out of countries 'soon'. There are too many to name..... The Philippines will not ban their workers coming here. They keep threatening it...but have never done it! Saudi banned them...not the other way round....the money/remittances is/are too easy for them to turn their back on...watch this space! They wont run out of countries, but employers simply will not hire maids from many countries that can supply them because of vast cultural differences and other issues . From what i know, women from most countries are way more assertive than Filipinas and may lash out in unpredictable and violent ways if subjected to abusive behavior . Would you really want a Nigerian or Mongolian maid ? edited by Arch on 03/10/2011
