We all know what type of person did such an act, but unfortunately until he is caught nothing can be done. In fact even if he is caught i doubt anything will happen. These are the same specimen who throw kittens in highways. In short they are cowards who dont have guts to face anyone even half their size so they pick on cats and sleep peacefully thinking they haev achieved something on their own

I was in MOE for the 12.30 showing of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. A European family came in 20 minutes after film had started and started to immediately talk and fiddle around in the row behind us. We told them to be quiet and was told to go and see another movie. It is not always the typical nationality. It can be anyone. a politically correct observation. I agree it can be anyone but more often than not it will be one of the usual suspects

if you follow temperatures as closely as i do, you would have seen that we had a very late summer, it was not that hot well into mid April, in fact we may have had a similar thread on how the tempeartues are lovely in May ! IIRC, max during June was almost always under 38C, when its traditionally 42+ The coldest days of this winter was in 2nd week of Feb when its generaly a month earlier, so it makes sense that "summer "will stay longer than usual, so end Sept is like end-August in earlier years. Expect max temps to fall below 38C only after late October...

Few weeks back there was a thread on good things in Dubai and some posters felt Dubai had "very polite" people. I didnt agree then and dont agree now and feel that only people coming from Riyadh, Cairo or Delhi will think people here are polite. Many people jump queues, show no respect unless they feel they could be punished, throw rubbish etc with impunity. We were waiting for the Etihad coach to Dubai last night, and almost 20 people from the same country jumped the queue while banging people with their baggage trolleys. I dont care if you grew up in Manila or Chennai, if you behave uncivilized you are uncivilized and in my ideal world, would be beaten with a horsewhip in public. And its not like they grew up fighting for food from aid agencies. Most people who act like this are not poor but are simply undisciplined, nasty creatures who behave like animals unless there is the chance they will be fined. I was in KL last week and when a train door opened, peole simply pushed in elbowing people waiting to exit and didnt allow them to leave, its only when DH shouted "could we have some manners and common courtesy" that the people stopped pushing in. Funnily in such cultures its considered rude to shout or show anger, but its apparently not rude to push people or break queues. edited by Arch on 30/09/2011

I have little sympathy for parents that don't follow the car parking rules. A little boy was seriously hurt last year at DIA due to a parent that couldn't be ***** to go find a park like everyone else and decided to stop their fat 4x4 in front of the gate. One of the kids flung the door wide open and hit a boy and his Mum as they were crossing ( whre they were supposed to be crossing). I saw someone do it again today and I honked my horn for 5 seconds as I passed to shame her. Obviously, if you are new and there are no signs, what you did can't be avoided and you couldnt have know - But there are still loads of parents who just dont give a sh*t edited by derien on 19/09/2011 i agree with you. there is a difference between someone who enters the wrong way by mistake (OP), and someone who does it by mistake, but has an attitude of "i dont give a ****", i'll stop and enter where i want,,,, The latter deserves all the shouting and honking she gets

Grrr.... Can't believe that the Ma'am was so nonchalent about it. Sometimes wonder whether some people are actually thick or have just adopted a "Don't give a **** attitude". Tx The former in case of the maid, the latter in case of the Madam, prayers with you and hope the cut heals soon :) here we have so many people who only behave properly if there are threats of fines. so what laziness you are talking about? sorry but not every body can afford being back home, other wise none of us will be here ;) If you choose to pretend that expat kids who dont do even the most basic of chores because "its the maids job" arent lazy then i dont know what to say.... Maids need to work as they have families, the smart families are the ones who have their maid clean, wash clothes and lend a hand in other chores, not the ones who have the maid do everything, and their 18 year old son incapable of even ironing a shirt

With that money they tend to accommodate themselves in Dubai and also send money home. India is now at its boom and many expats who lost their jobs have landed into well paying jobs there... These low income group might as well have a good future there rather than come here to live in filthy conditions... edited by sareek on 15/09/2011 Very accurately said. Have you noticed why there are many Nepalis workers around, specially in the last 5 years? Its because many recruiters were unable to bring in Indians from India who were asking for higher wages or else choosing to stay put there. One thing people dont notice is that the calibre of professionals coming from South Asia has progressively come down. In the 80s many of the smartest in their trades would come to the Gulf, now its next to impossible to persuade any good doctor or banker in India to come here. People need to stop lumping all Indians and Asians together. A maid can be a "queen bee" getting 1000 dhs, but a professional living in Delhi or Mumbai cant survive on 3000 dhs in Dubai edited by Arch on 15/09/2011

A university graduate in India doing an office job, can expect about 500/600 AED per month (I was looking through the classified job adverts in an Indian newsapaper a month ago.) A delivery driver, about 300 AED per month. A labourer? Can you even imagine what he would earn? If he could even get a regular job that he could go to every day? . Thats not bery true. 500 dhs may be what a BA in History gets paid in a clerical position, but young professionals in urban cities get paid more and can rise up the career ladder fast as well... A good engineer or MBA grad can expect far more than 500 aed a month As for laborers and blue collar workers, most workers who are good in their trades are choosing to stay in India, i am not talking about Kerala where industries are very less, but you simply wont find a good plumber or carpenter in India wanting to come to Dubai anymore In white collar jobs as well, many Indians are staying put and are willingly choosing to stay in India edited by Arch on 15/09/2011

And not to mention asking to pay below minimum wages... http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news/agents-advise-paying-maids-less-than-minimum-wage DUBAI // Families who want a maid are being advised to pay salaries below the minimum wage set by the workers' home countries. The push for lower pay - sometimes hundreds of dirhams less - comes from the very recruitment agencies who bring housemaids to the UAE. The Philippines government has fixed the minimum monthly wage for a maid working overseas at US$400 (Dh1,470). A small number of agencies do specify this amount but most quote much lower salaries. [b'>Most agencies tell maids they cannot have a mobile phone, meaning they cannot call their families, and advise employers not to let maids leave the house alone.[/b'> The resident asked if he should give the maid a day off each week and was told: "[b'>You should observe the housemaid for maybe a few months and if she's OK that's the time you'd give her a day off.[/b'> "[b'>But inside your house only - do not allow her to go out alone because she will meet other people and there could be problems[/b'>, and also to protect the sponsor because the sponsor will pay much money to bring a housemaid here to the UAE." Official salary levels for domestic workers vary depending on which country they come from. The minimum for Indonesian maids is Dh800 a month and a number of agencies quoted this figure for experienced staff from that country. "[b'>Regarding the hours, as long as the sponsor is still awake they have to work. If the sponsor still needs the help of the housemaid she cannot sleep.[/b'> But of course they can take a rest, they will not be working for 24 hours."

Green ish is right, the salaries are set by the govts. There was this article on maids yesterday and agents actually advise employers to be very strict with them and not give mobiles or days off, and if they give days off, not to allow them out !

The main appeal of GV IMO was that it was out in the open, i really hope they dont make it like another non descript "exhibition" by having air conditioned stalls Nothing like walking about in 15C drinking something hot or slurping on Hot Tom Yam soup ! And as GV was around 5 miles inland, it would alwasy be 3 degrees cooler here than in the coastal areas.

There are people who claim that its so safe, they dont lock their homes at night or some leave their car running when they go inside a store. Such people will probably be stung because while violent crime is very rare, petty theft is quite common . There are even gangs who break into locked cars and tow them away, and are caught from time to time...

I don't think they need the English to communicate with the dogs but rather with the owners. Also the trainings and first aid courses are all provided in English. In that case why would they require someone with English as a first language only? There are many people who are as fluent in English as any native speaker.... In fact I have met quite a few people in Dubai who are not native speakers, but for whom, English is more or less a first language..

Well sometimes these 1 or 2 dhs here or there upset me as well. Most shops and businesses think its ok to shaft you out of 1 or 2 or even 10 dhs. When you "catch" them many of them have an insolent look of "its only 2 dhs". In other words, arent you rich enough to lose 2 dhs here or there. Funnily the shops are much richer than us but every fils counts for them, but individual customers are supposedly generous enough to not mind losing 1 or 2 dhs in every purchase. And its worse when you are at a counter and dont have time to argue as people behind you start muttering and grumbling.....

the maid culture embarrasses me (who do SOME expats think they are) I would never bring my kids up in a country where they were not treated as equals. it is sad to see [i'>some[/i'> kids brought up here who then move elsewhere and deal with people primarily on the basis of "but he is from there" and "she is just a "......ian". Everyone is part of a hierarchy and disputes should ideally be settled on the basis of who is "superior" to the other. Then again no point blaming the kids as some people spend 20 years here and become like that themselves.......

I moved here from Hackney and I love the fact that I can go out at night and never feel threatened, and that people here (even the very poor ones) are in the main, an honest bunch who aren't out to relieve you of your valuables. It counts for a lot. . So are people in other places like SIngapore, UK, US dishonest people "out to get your valuables" ? i feel people here are as mixed with honest and dishonest people as any major expat city like SG, HK, . edited by Arch on 10/09/2011

OK, I exaggerated. But still, according to Wikipedia, 63% or more of Dubai population are from the ''subcontinent''. 17% Emirati 9.1% Other Arab nationalities 42.3% Indian 13.3% Pakistani 7.5% Bangladeshi 2.5% Filipino 1.5% Sri Lankan 0.9% European 0.3% American 5.7% other countries edited by Wild Mint on 08/09/2011 Well, non-Indian subcontinentals are different from Indians... And mere observation and small bits of facts show the numbers above are outdated. For one Europeans comprise at least 3% (brits alone are ~100000 at least, i.e. 1.5% in the UAE ), Filipinos comprise a lot more than 2.5%, Bangladeshis are ~10%, etc.

Indians tend to win too - again because Indians do have trust in the country and invest here and many retain their salaries/savings here as opposed to the typical Western expat. Wrong. Some Indians, particularly businessmen and 2nd generation expats retain money here. Many others remit everything that they save to theit extended family back home. So we cant say "Indians retain their salaries here"

because their marketing department need to know who are the majority of their clients, to target them better. chinese and africans etc are not represented in the UAE in such big numbers than locals, other arabs, indians and westerners. so not a lucrative target group for a new sales campaign. makes some sense, however it is still odd not to include anyone from Far East as there are many Filipinos and increasing number of Chinese here. And somehow i am sure that a Peruvian will be considered "Indian" , Australian will be considered "European", and a greek will be considered "other Arab" ! Moreover, Indian is not 1 group and there are huge differences between different types of South Asians in terms of taste, purchasing power, etc

Its all good to be politically correct, but if someone sees the video of stoning a couple to death last year, its so brutal and heart wrenching and seeing the men laugh and play with the stones before killing them as if its a picnic makes me believe they are backwards. Their crime? The girl was sold to another man for marriage and she ran away with this man, they were promised forgiveness if they returned home. Once they did, the tribals broke their promise and killed them. That and attitudes like the guy who used to work with a close friend, who openly stated if his daughter ever shamed the family in any way, he would kill her!is it an attitude or the norm? it is all relative. In some parts of such countries, it is the norm. As I said when you see 200 grown up men gather, and laugh about about, and then stone 2 people to death in a horrible way, it cant be the exception. More so, when one of them ran away after being forced to marry, which by itself goes against Islam Skewed sense of 'honor" is rife in such places. Thats why i didnt say "countries", rather "places". But when you are in those areas, i wouldnt be surprised if most people believe in such harsh measures

Sandy Sorry to say this was a hard lesson for you, that you cannot be too friendly with people that may take it the wrong way, and honestly, opening the door to a Pakistani Garbage man while wearing shorts is most likely sending him a message that you wanna do IT, that is what their brains have been filled with, and the very reason that most Pakistani women are accused of being hoares if they do not display modesty. I know it is your own home, and you can dress how you like, and you can also open the door like that, IF YOU LIKE, but remember there will be consequences. Right now this guy thinks you are free and easy and that your husband does not respect you. You sent him a message by not opening the door, and it has not worked. Call his boss and tell them to stop him now, or change his route. Choice no.2 Get DH to answer the door and then tell the guy that he has sent you back to your family as your were NO GOOD and talked to MEN. edited by IAMVP on 06/09/2011 Sounds harsh but i agree. When i spoke of backwards places this is what i meant; and btw its not Pakistan as a whole, but some tribal parts of NW Pakistan/Afghanistan . Such parts are very conservative and they generally believe: 1) Women should be covered up and should not leave home by themselves, ever. 2) Anyone who doesnt follow these 2 rules and is harassed by a man was "asking for it" 3) They give unloaded guns to their children to play with and guns are sacred there 4) The smallest insult leads to years long feuds and battles between tribes 5) They genuinely believe that a woman being friendly is dying to jump in bed with one of them Most Heavy vehicles and taxi drivers were from such parts and even now many of them are from there. And while there are many sane voices out there, they are often drowned; the Taliban sprung from people of such cultures as well
