You can't get vogels, but Spinneys do a spelt loaf, that if you buy fresh, leave for a day, slice and then freeze to eat when youre ready (I'm the only one who eats it in our house, so 2 slices at a time is perfect) its 'almost' as good as vogels soy and linseed loaf. hth

While there is a whole culture of 'benefit mums' all around the western world and we can all a shake our heads and tut tut over it, and rightly so to a certain extent, my littlest bil and his partner got pregnant at 15. It was her second (but 1st viable) pregnancy too, and the whole family went into the expected collective shock. However, their little girl despite being born to infant parents, is THE most loved, well bought up, treasured child ever. Not only that my bil has proven himself to be a devoted hardworking father...right from the very begining. he was the 16 year old stacking supermarket shelves after school and nights to pay his way for the coming child and he has worked tirelessly to become a qualified expert in his field and a young man and father to be proud of. Judgement on anybody is a tricky thing...while one finger points accusingly, there are at least 3 fingers pointing back towards yourself. So while I get that you feel your son has had a 'lucky escape' (though how lucky it is after a period of some years has lapsed is a whole other conversation) and all of us would wish for better for our children, sometimes life just ain't that straight forward.

A hunky bloke in a kilt is enough to make me swoon! I've tried to persuade DH to wear the full kit as he's tall, hunky and would great in it. But alas he's not Scottish and my pleas have fallen on deaf ears so far! Lol! tried same with my hubby and he seemed to feel not being scottish was a hinderance...even used the arguement that as my ancestary is, he was one by marriage. :)

There is a company, founded and owned by women here called (and I am racking my brains here to remember) Tilly and Pinch. They were setting up along the tupeprware method and were targeting specifiaclly some of the very many smart dedicated women who want to work and hone skills, but can't for whatever reasons, be it kids or whatever. Do a google search for them, or Facebook, see if they are still going. feel sure they will be as they were a couple of seriously smart women. They have a range of the most exquisite evening bags and clutches I have ever seen.

At home they sell this stuff called pool shock. You dump it in, it kills EVERYTHING and after a few days the water normalizes and you can swim in it again. That and a good filter should be all you need. Yep, thats the stuff....says on the pack here that you can swim 24 hours after treating, but I'd run the filter for a few days just to be sure.

And doors that open automatically :-P *snort* to the automatic doors...what about automatic taps at hand basins? The amount of times I have stood at a sink in a bathromm in another country waiting for the water to come out...doh!

You're allowed a dish so long as it can't be seen from common areas, the road etc. Apparently you're not allowed a washing line?! Who'd a thunk it....

Anyway...my understanding of the phrase work to live, live to work is basically do you work to have the life you want and aspire to and are happy with, or do you live for your work and let the rest of life pass you by. Bit like that saying, dance like no one is watching etc.

LL should only charge you for repainting if it's a condition of your lease to leave it painted and you decided to let him do it. We do all our painting holes and leave the place clean and ready to be painted, as it's never been said it had to returned as so. We've never had a problem with getting our deposit back, but himself deducts it from the final rent chq and only hands it over with the keys. This particular villa I will have to spread filth around with gay abandon to leave it in quite the state it was when we took it over ;)

Just don't get caught girls...did you know is against the law to uplift sand from anywhere here? ;) Yikes...there's one rule I unknowingly broke a few times! Oh...would we have been required to return the sand that blows in on the shamal? :D I refuse to comment incase I incriminate myself ;)

Look, it's really nice and lovely that we can all feel so magnanimous and lady bountiful about giving away our 1dh's... everyone is correct, it is 'only' 1dh. But lets try and remember that charity/goodwill gestures come from the heart and benefit both the giver and the receiver. They are given because you WANT to give it, because you CAN give it and because it makes you feel good about yourself for being able to do so. It becomes something less than that and an irritant when it is expected, when you are coerced or somehow shamed into it.

I think this maybe isnt Desert Rose from EW who wrote this letter as I was always under the impression DR didnt live in Dubai? Course it isnt desertrose(1958) on this forum...she'd never spout this stuff. But we do have a poster with another name...forget what it is, who I recall posting something in a very similar vein. Not saying it is the same woman, just that there is similarities. Glad to know that you didn't mistaken me for her LOL....u should know me better by now :-) Desert rose is probably either too privileged to work or has a terrible husband who asked her to choose between her career or her kids, or just wants to **** off all women or she's not even married and has no idea what she's talking about ( and that's my guess) As for me, I'd llllluv to do both. My mum is a working woman till now (been working for 40 years straight) and she has done a marvelous job raising us up. So I don't see why we can't do both...if we could 'ere...a name change? No wonder I was suffering under the impression you had gone walk about :)

Not saying it is the same woman, just that there is similarities. I do believe that some women in that first flush of motherhood can make sweeping statements such as the one in 7days and believe it wholeheartedly. I liken those mums to pregnant or about to be pregnant first time mums with their ideas on childcare :) Some women obviously are built for that type of all consuming motherhood, I think most of us realise that we're just not that perfect, and we're a little to balanced in the ways of reality to even wish to be so.

I don't know of any schools in Dubai with an early finish...sorry. We're moving country. The one thing you can take heart from, is that any transition to school is tiring for the wee ones. That 4 and a half hours of structure when they first start just takes it out of them regardless. They adjust. By term 2, they'll be used to it, and get back their energy. For the wee ones in fs1 and often 2, they're young enough that some of them still nap, regardless of whether they're at school or not. Doesnt matter what country you are in, they all have to do the transition from home-kindy/nursery-school-bigschool. By the time they have finished with foundation they're ready for the longer day, though they'll still be knackered at the end of the day for the first term ;) We just make sure for at least the first term, that we have no after school activities, enough quiet time, quality weekends (something we're failing with miserably currently...roll on Eid and a holiday!) and make sure they get plenty of good long sleep at night, and good healthy food.

Our poor wee poppet (yr 2...she's 6) is on the bus at 6.40am and arrives home at 4.20pm...a HUGE day, and I really feel for her. By the time she gets home, it's snack, homework, dinner, bath, books and bed. We're moving soon, and one positive will be the school hours...an hour shorter for a start, but her Dad will be able to drop her off, and I'll get a driver to collect her (I don't drive), so she'll be out the door at 7.30, and home by 2.30...is going to make the WORLD of difference.

I think we have someone who posts on EW with a belief system similar to that of this letter writer...will be interesting to see what comments come up because of it. Quite frankly I think it's someone who enjoys the attention she/he knows they will get by stating such a fundamentally archaic veiw point. If, by chance it turns out this person really really believes what they have written, no amount of discussion will move their stance from their chosen pedastal...they have a halo and are bathed in the glorious light of their own sainthood.

I hope none of us ever have to work for pennies in a boiling **** like car park and need to run after a dirham. I also feel quite upset and sad that this post was written by an expat who's privileges are in a league of their own compared to such workers. I'll also add, it's quite depressing to think humanity is forgotten so easily. Walk a mile in someone elses shoes and all that. Very sad :( I don't think anyone has forgotten their humanity...OP was having a bad day, and pms-ing...if the fella hadn't have shown up, she would have been just as cross. It's more the expectation of a tip as a 'right' that annoys people on some days, even if it is 'just' a dirham. A taxi driver got an earful from me the other day, he was speeding, didnt help me with the 6 giant reuasable type shopping bags I had and persisted in delivering me to the house next door to my own, so I then had to lug tons of shopping down the street to my own place, in the sweltering h3ll like heat. And I'm normally the type of person who pays the driver double the fare for that kind of trip ;)

Theres one next to us in 10, with a pool. Been empty for a bit, but I heard someone in doing some work yesterday I think. No number on the sign, but if I was you, I'd take a drive around your target area and take down some agent numbers from the houses themselves.

Oh Aroha, I'm so sorry you're having to try and deal with this from so far away. Do you have family back home who can lend a hand? Are you able to bring him out to you to keep an eye on him or is that not feasible? Dad can't travel...DVT and an unfortunate side effect from his prostate cancer radiation. And the folk at home (including my sister who has an emotional age of 12) are making out this is unreasonable behaiour as opposed to a flag for something else. small country town and all. They've taken MONTHS to even let me know this much, and the more I call, the more I know. (you know...am far away, what can i do, and maybe dad will snap out of it...offs.)
