Not possibly an entirely grown up, or posh, idea, but....Firenze has the most amazing camping ground. So central...up a hill over looking the town itself. So easy to walk down hill, over the ponte whatsit and you are right there. Weather will be fine for camping and am pretty 'sure' the camping ground has cabins and what not, as well as tent and van sites. *sigh* good good memories.

what do you reckon SD? easy to get into? I'm concerned about start dates....she could do a term here and then transfer? Or do we perhaps delay her start by a couple of weeks and just start in muscat? If we do a term here, it's a long time commuting for himself. Did you live in an expat community? Villa? (and yep...the outdoor relaxed life style has it's appeal :)) Tarti! been wondering how you were getting along. Catch you soon? Sam7: what nothing, not settled yet. Relax girl...and wheres my house key? Got a cook book here with your name on it in exchange, lol! Mail you soon simples...have to fetch in supplies and fix a/c tomorrow.

lol simples! This is what happens when I leave himself to his own devices for a week. He's currently negociating the package (!!!???) thats how far along the process is. But, it still may not happen if the package agreement doesnt work out. Last thing I want to be doing is school hunting, grrrr. And you know what my house is like...the idea of packing that behemouth up makes me shudder. Luckily I'm still sleep deprived, jet lagged etc so it's all a bit of a novelty at the minute :) Had a quick lookie on the oman site...will also put out a message for desertrose, see if she has any ideas. All the girls are away? Catch up this week?

Irish Bar was still selling booze last time I flew Qatar, arohadxb, and that was at [gulp'> 11am. I know that I was surprised at how 'open' the DXB airport was when I last flew during Ramadan; all the cafes, and bars and what-have-you, were 'business as usual' -- I suspect because of the international clientele. Made for quite the shock after experiencing Dubai locked in Ramadan mode. ;) Strangely enough, the airport lounges are less 'open' than the bars/cafes/restaurants open to the public. Seriously though: head to the Irish Bar and pretend you're back in 1999, able to smoke [i'>inside[/i'>, drink at will ... it's a nice little ten minutes before you grab your flight. :D oh thank goodness...been having a panic and dreaming up ways to sneak my voddy through :D

It would probably pay you to get onto schools asap. the early foundation years can be the hardest spots to get. Whether the school of choice has a place for the children will then depend on if the kids can start in the Jan term. Your little one would probably start fs1 in September anyway, but if you are working you can always pop him into nursery in the mean time. I can never quite get my head round the age cut offs etc, but the older child will either be fs2 or yr1 by september.

Chaweng will be fine (sorry don't know about your choice of hotels, as we are backpacker central here) It's def. the busy part of the island with a lot going on and for the partiers etc, but Samui itself is just a lovely lovely island...you won't be able to help yourself but have a lovely time. Counting down the days til I hit the beach myself :)

well, I live in a zoo and a toystore, and given it's summer, the place looks like more of a tip than normal. :D Friends don't care about that though, they come for the company, the play, the laughs etc...not the food you have, or if you manage to keep your house pristine. The wine is in the fridge, so I hope whoever does turn up today brings something yummy to eat, lol~ kids'll have a blast in the pool and i think lil miss and her mum could do with some distraction. Trying to nerve self up to go pack her bag.

gardening? weird. Our rabbit had a guinea companion for some time and he did seem happier. He's been on his own for some time and rabbits are by nature (pack is the wrong word) but live in family groups. Hmm, not sure where the common sense comment comes into it? I asked a question. If the vet in question had said it was cost/ difficulty then that would be a different question, no? Vet said was impossible to spey as too difficult. Interesting that there are vets that will spey, also interesting that Nad al sheba (which would be where we would take interesting and difficult animals) didnt seem too confident, and awful that it was stressful for the animal. Our rabbit is too old (we think) to have the cut now, and i'm reluctant to have him undergo any op that isnt absolutely essential. Looks like, much as I would like to help my friend out we'll have to look at another guinea for the family. Thanks for the help, all.

exactly the same advice I got in NZ years ago...call the fire bigrade. I had an intruder, lived alone in a villa type place, had a dog going nuts and could hear all the windows being tried. When the cops got there they said to call the fire guys as they would be there in 3 mins and actually catch the guy. Sure enough, guy caught with a machete, a few injured, (none dead thank god) fire men there first. eta: as a note...cops could only prosecute if your man had actually harmed me AND they had caught him with a good description. If actually caught in the act or fleeing (by fire guys, there so much quicker) we had a much better case. edited by arohadxb on 16/07/2011

LOL Aroha brilliant. On a more serious note, DH sleeps with a 6 battery (the largest ones) MagLite next to the bed. Think super heavy truncheon :D Don't think the intent of purchase (or insertion of batteries) was ever for it's light source or that it's ever even been switched on for that matter. So you could always carry a torch in case the DEWA hasn't been activated yet :D exactly. :D or a bag of soap bars, just purchased and not put away yet. (T'only works if house is as disorganized as mine, but :) )

as a general rule of thumb (not specific to here) anything that you might reasonably expect to have on your person is an acceptable weapon when it comes to self defence. You might have deodorant sprays, insect spray, mouthwash spray, reasonably, in your hand bag at any time. On your balcony, in the case of intruders....window wash stuff, insect/fly spray. Fertilizer? At your back door/front door...furniture polish, tile cleaner spray, windolene, etc etc. You may have a bad back and require a voltaren muscle spray, a bad case of sinus and require a salt spry. Keys are good, but you may also find yourself transporting a great deal of coins to the exchange/bank at anytime, and these wielded in a empty sock swung like a baseball ball with a decent wind up may have an interesting deterent effect. As will your handbag, with enough weight in it. Your shoes, if heels, (with decent tips on them) are not just effective on lower regions...bad luck if one fell off landed in your hand and ended up planted between the bad guys eyes. Or up his nose with an unfortunate 'rip' upwards. hth :)

Like daza, i'm a kiwi...our kids start kindy at that age (3) at home, or pre school or playcenter. Up to that time, we have numerous playgroups, free art, music and movement classes run by local council, plunket and library's. You socialize as mums and the babes from before they can even sit up are fascinated by older kids and what they do. i figure thats how they learn, even if it's something as little as how to put a finger in their mouth to sharing a precious toy. "school' here for the 3 year olds is just the same, play centric and lead by the child, with music, dance, art, movement and fun. You can poo poo it all you like and imagine dire class rooms full of imprisoned kids at schools but the reality for most nurseries and early learning centers is far far different. The children for the most part (and I will give a nod here to the kids who arent ready or suited for the level of interaction nursery requires) have a wonderful time. Coming from NZ with an active, busy, nosey and realatively clever child and NO suitable avenue for her and I to continue with her (and my) happy routine of free play groups etc etc we made the choice to pop her into nursery, and it was the best thing we could have done for her. She blossomed with all that lovely interaction with other nosey bright toddlers/preschoolers for a couple of mornings a week to start with and finished by 'graduating' from FS1 before moving on to big school. FS1 is called so for a reason...it is a foundation for the children to learn from...part of the building blocks of their education. Not for everyone, nor everyones point of veiw obviously BUT we stand by the choices we have made for our child and I would no more try to justify it, or even worry about an opposing point of veiw than I would try to shovel sand out of the desert...you do what is right for your child and your family.

Aren't you quids in if you are able to sell it at all? You have an asset, worth something, even if it's less than you paid for it If you can't sell it for a profit, how are you any better off than someone who has rented? Say you're able to sell it for the same you paid for it - you've broken even, but you still walk away with nothing, just like a renter does. The only advantage you've had out of the deal is that you haven't been subject to the whims of a landlord. I'm with simples on this....excuse my 'count on fingers maths' BUT if I buy a property here, I have something that I actually own. If I say spend, 200k per annum on a rent, the land lord stiil owns the place. When I leave, he has my money, owns the place still and I take with me what I put in my suitcase. if I pay 200k on my own place I can sell it for what ever (market dictates, what I am happy with etc etc,) and say, i sell at a price enough to cover the mortgage with a bit over...then I walk with my suitcase of belongings and the dollars over. Quids in. You make money providing your not in negative equity as has been said. That said, I wouldnt buy a place here for love nor money.

weeeeelll, it says it's not indecent, so the poor man needs someone to come clean the house, wash/iron his clothes and feed and water him occasionally. Says something if you ask me that he's prepared to pay a stranger to do all the 'wifely' chores and yet the best she gets is a holiday, kids in tow, at the in laws :D

Hubby out currently but 'think' name of company is paramount...they will drop off car and pick up and do all that service-y stuff. We're not signed in to any length of time and as we will be giving the car back for a month and half they are actually asking us to keep it and doing it pro rata.

Do you have a map at all? Basically, from Jum, you want to get on to SZR heading to Abu Dhabi. There are 2 turn offs you can take, both sign posted to Emirates Hills among other names (like Greens, tecom, Lakes,Meadows, Springs etc) The easiest is the one past JLT (Jum Lake Towers with the Marina/JBR on your right hand side) you will swing off SZR and be in the Emirates Living section of town....from there follow your nose (and the signs) and you will find M5. and yes. I am rubbish at directions, sorry!
