Do you know what? I agree with EVERYTHING you say tkoshy, to a point. I made the comment waste of space and I mean it. Too often we make many many excuses for lack of knowledge, awareness, upbringing, economics. But please tell me how the father who wrote into the gulf news, via email, via the internet, on a news site can claim lack of knowledge or awareness or education? he speaks english, reads it well, has access to at least a computer and the interwebby and reads the paper carefully. He has NO EXCUSE for not knowing what harm will come to his precious daughter when he has access to the whole world of information out there. So yep, waste of space and breath. Just because someone has access to the web and is functional enough to use it, doesn't mean that he/she will automatically go out looking for info. Most of the time, people only research stuff when they are confronted with situations that demand that knowledge. Today that person will be forced to seek out info that he would perhaps never have thought important to know. Does he deserve to be called names? You still seem to think so, I just think thats rude. and I don't, so there you go. (think it's rude) When it comes to our childrens safety I am sick to death of pussy footing around. Who is wailing when their children...all of them unbelted and all of them dead on the al ain road...when it happens? How many times is this reported in the papers as recently as the last 2 weeks or so? If our man in question reads the paper so carefully to find out about a new law, then he will be well aware of headlines splashed across the front page of dead families for lack of seat belts. He is not buried in a wadi with no access to news, or info, he obviously feels passionately aout his choice to not restrain his child enough to write into a paper and as such deserves not my patience, nor my understanding, nor my kind heartedness in letting him away with it because of what ever reason. Perhaps, when he's sat in jail with a dead daughter numerous fines and blood money in the offing he will get the point of the 400dh investment in a car seat. But, I still believe education is the way forward.

Every time this topic comes up, I sit on my hands. I agree with carseats, just find the judgemental attitude on this thread unbelievable. If you know all about carseats and their importance, go out and educate. Don't jump on people who are new to the idea and concept and who worry about costs. And for the sake of clarification, I'm talking about the commentors on the Gulf News article. Come with me and I will introduce you to people who don't know what a carseat is, why their child should not be in a car unrestrained and for whom Dh 400 is a big deal. For whom a small car is a big deal.If you look around and pay attention, you will see that 50% of the population is like that. Are they berks/wastes of space/numpties, etc because they have not been educated about them. Because they have/ don't know anybody who has them, don't know/haven't heard of children dying as a result of being unrestrained? So they should have not had children because they could not afford carseats?! So instead of suggesting ideas for families with small cars and 3 kids, judge them, tell them that if they don't want to spend, they should not have kids and then come rant on here about them!! Incredible. If you know all about carseats and child safety, then thank your lifetime of education and your circumstances for that knowledge and conviction. If you do not come from such a background, child safety in a car is an alien concept. And before I get jumped on, I have no kids, but when I do, I will get them. But for my part, I will not judge. Why? I grew up without them. Everybody I know, grew up without them, unharmed. Entire generations travelled about and still do without car seats. Does that make them !diots/St00pid? No, just unaware. I educate those closest to me, hopefully their actions will educate others. I went and got pamphlets from Lesley's campaign and put them on all the cars in my neighborhood , of the people I know have small kids and who didn't have a carseat. Will I be angry if I see them out and about without carseats? No, just try harder next time. I will also not slag people off, who struggle to make ends meet and count every dirham. But will suggest alternatives to them. The law may force people to do stuff out of fear but without proper education, it completely misses the point . It will end up affecting the lower income population in this country, just like every other traffic rule and regulation. Thanks Aroha, having talked to a couple of other friends who know Dubai and the roads, I'm thinking this issue might be the showstopper for Greenfields. You're not the first person who's talked about how difficult and how long it can take to get out of the area in the mornings and my problem is I will need to be prompt as I will probably have to head home to get DH to work. We made 2 trips there and back during the last fortnight and neither was optimal. Nor were they in the morning peak hour or afternoon school rush. And I just worry about every extra minute on that road out there increases the probability of an accident. Paranoid much??? LOL. The sad thing is that I really liked the feel of the school and they were so enthusiastic about my boys... Thanks for your feedback, it's another piece in the jigsaw puzzle of putting this all together. x ah, we all get paranoid about the kids and the roads....my twitch is perfectly common and normal round here. For all the talk of the roads hun...I do hope you can get it sorted out to your satisfaction...is IS a great school, never hear anything bad about it really, and am sure it would be a fabulous nurturing learning environment for your boys.

I had a friend here, qualified Nanny with over 20 years experience and all the first aid/early learning bells and whistles who had a drop off programme like that. she has moved home now, and I imagine it wasnt entirely legal though. So they do exist, just a matter of finding one I spos. Who knows where you'd start.

Well as I live and breath...a genuine waste of space. ******. People like that need to be forcibly shown what would happen to the comfort of his 8 month old child when she has been flung out of her mothers arms, kills him with her impact before being flung through a windshield and not only mashed upon a road but in all likely hood run over or impacting on something outside of the vehicle. But no, he wants to save his 400dh. IMO, humble though it is, for a fine to be effective, whether it's 100, 1000, or 10 000, the law will actually have to be enforced unilaterally across the board for all citizens. I won't be holding my breath for that to happen.... An educational campaign (like Buckle Up,) but a highly visually disturbing one, that is on-going for years. It took a generation in our countries for these ideas to take root, and this is a huge step for here.

And as a friend of mine has said...they have it first hand that the 'lady' can barely string 3 words together let alone write a book...this has all been about the authors grandstanding and point of veiw. The good lord only knows what his agenda is and has been except for the money. (thanks dikane)

Theres a tethered balloon too that you can go up in for the veiw. Good tip is at the airport they have these tourist maps/brochures full of great ideas, and you can also buy a package that gives you entry to a whole load of things for next to nothing (recover the cost of it on one entry Can't rec. a hotel though sorry, we basically stayed backpackery.

At least you will feel you have done something to help then He is into construction, he is a Senior Quantity Surveyor Don't know of anything here hon, but would you conscider moving to Qatar? and if that author seriously consciders he has new insights, viewpoints and information out of that woman 'that won't be discussed til the book is released' that he has had the good sense to take it straight to the police. Not holding my breath though, cynical ole me. Riding the back of the publicity band wagon all the way to the bank. Disgusting that they can profit from the death of children. The good news is that one major bookstore chain in NZ, PaperPlus, will not be selling the book on it's release. Well done them.

So, I hate housework(and am rubbish at it, but we cope), but guess what, I hate being at the beck and call of a company who demands all of me and more. I am free to be who I want, do what I want, when i want and no more restrictions on where my 'self' can go. ('sept for hubby, who if truth be told, is just a little bit pleased he is able to allow me this)

Bumping this up so as many people can see it as possible. The Kahui twins had no voice in their short painful lives and were (imho) criminally disserviced by our entire system in their lives and death. We can at least use our voices loud and clear that no profit should be made from it. It is time that we all took a stand and said that the harm and deaths to all of our children is unacceptable, and laws must be put in place where the criminals who perpetuate these crimes are bought to justice. This case from start to finish was a travesty, and now the mother seeks to cynically exploit the publicity surrounding the twins on-going inquest and profit by it.

Have you seen that that 'woman' who gave birth to those tragically murdered twins Chris and Kru, has written a BOOK about it?! With the help of Ian Wishart. I strongly urge you all to join any of the boycott FB pages regarding this and let our disgust be known loud and clear. That anyone, let alone a supposed 'parent' should try to profit from their criminally short lives and foul deaths is beyond me..I cannot express adequetly how very much this sickens me to the very core. That the inquest for these babies is now back on and they have chosen this time to release the book just goes to show how low these people are that they would try to use this for extra publicity and profit yet more from it. Shame shame shame on them.

BMAP...it's actually not that far (from the meadows/springs), but GC has that godawful round about and then it narrows to one lane as you head into the community. Now, I don't KNOW for sure how it is in the morning during school run/head to work time but given it took us an hour to get out of GC on a weekend day and not peak traffic time just this last weekend, I can't see it as being anything less than chaos. I was also thinking about this last night: Our school bus system sounds better organized and more reliable for a start, but for lil miss's run it doesnt go on SzR or emirates road or have any nasty big interchanges like that roundabout out at GC. We do have a terrible one on the entry to our springs, but. Hopefully that will be rectified asap As for the cost: I don't drive. Himself cannot do the school run even in the am as he works all over the place. Minimum in a taxi per day for us would have been 140dh. We pay per term 2700dh for the bus...can't remember what that broke down to on a daily basis, but you you can work it out. The best I can suggest, is when you get here (or is your hubby here already? I forget) is do a 'dry' run out to GC at school drop off time and see for yourself how it is, and then interrogate school bus provider and see if the systems they offer live up to your expectations. If it's STS then they 'should' be upgrading all their packages for the september intake.

roasted all the way. But I do have a thing for beetroot salad. Boil them in vinegar and water and salt till cooked but still nice and firm. Cool completely and then finely slice whole beetroot. Finely slice some onion, dress with vinegar and salt and pepper to taste and keep some of the juice from boiling them. Cold roasted butternut and beetroot are also great in salads with feta etc.

hey wuffles. How you feeling today? It's all about vunerability and your perceived position. He was utterly confident you wouldnt do anything about it, and relished his 'power' over you. He strikes me as someone who has got away with this before and was confident he would this time too. I think the first time something like this happens to us we go into a kind of shock...you just can't believe that this is actually happening. So, stunned, you make every excuse for the behaviour, take the shame and the guilt onto yourself. Men who behave this way actually rely on that reaction to get away with it. You did the right thing honey, though I'm a bit iffy on this letter of apology, keep the job but away from customers bizzo. I know it makes you feel better that he hasnt lost his job, but from your description he strikes me as a type that will find ways no matter what, so is still a risk at large. Big hugs, and hope today is a good one.

lol! kimball....I sometimes feel lil miss gets more of an education on the bus than she does in the playground ;) We're in the Springs bmap, so just round the corner from where you will be and lil miss goes to Star in Umm Al Sheif. She has had the same driver for 2 years and his child goes to the school as well, so I am confident that he treats our childrens safety as important as his own. There is a TA on board who collects child from the door, escorts to bus outside, and ensures seatbelts are right and behaviour on board. We've not had any instances of kids up and out of their seats etc in that time. They are then escorted to their classes. The kids are barcoded (well, their id tags are) and are swiped on entry to bus and exit, and that with the onboard gps system they are tracked the whole way...if a child doesnt arrive at school, a phone call is made within 15 mins to the parent. (I have a horror of child falling asleep in bus and being left there to die in the suffocating heat, so this system was a priority for me) CTV cameras are being added this summer for the start of next term. It's a rottenly early start with pick up being 6.45 and drop off 3.30 makes for a very long day, but as has been said you adjust. They do quite a lot of socializing on the bus, hence the interesting education child is getting on it, and if the kids are miffy and not talking to each other for whatever reason, lil miss does her homework.
