Our pup sitting plans have fallen over for this weekend and my mum is coming and we're away for the weekend. Anyone know of anywhere good that will take the foster pup for a night on such short notice? Alternatively, anyone fancy having the loveable rogue :)

I dread the trip home, i really really do. So much so, that I'm not going this year. Lil miss and himself will go and I will meet them after in HongKong. I went last year, and given it's such a horrendous flight there, we decided Lil miss and I would stay for 5 or 6 weeks to really make it worthwhile and have a decent amount of time in each stop. We do the length and breadth of NZ everytime. WRONG!!!! Whilst lovely to see family/friends that is just too too long away from our family unit. 2 or 3 days in each place also means you don't get fed up with staying in someone elses house as well, and you don't wear out your welcome on both sides ;) Friends are always the easiest, big central bbq, meal out, done and dusted..they know what it's like. We want to do a house hire in the middle of NZ at some stage and everyone can come to us...but then they start, oh don't have money, not well enough, can't take time off, too hard with kids and I get irritated...you know what? I just travelled round the world to see you, spent a fortune, disrupted my life and family and you can't manage a little drive to see us? They know full well that trip home for us is a nightmare..it's not relaxing, it's not a holiday and we only do it to see them. And now of course, because I'm not doing the trip this year, they're all like, oh have we upset you or whatever. No, you havent: I just don't want to do that trip. Would rather pay to get bits and pieces of our family to come out here. Fortunatly..we do get lots of 'us' trips throughout the year...we have become very adept at managing himselfs leave and we certainly don't waste it on trips home.

If no one replies saying omg, thats my dog! You can pop him to the nearest vets and see if he's is microchipped. That will give you owners contact details. Alternatively...do you have something you can attach to his collar? A make shift leash of some kind, and then take him for a wee walk near where you found him...someone may be searching for him, or he will lead you home. hth

if I remember rightly boomerang, charredsoul has had years of trouble with her ex..he has had the children hostage and forced her to return here even when she finally had the courage to leave and save herself...she could not leave her children. Charredsoul..I can't help with the current situation, but i did want to say that I am so happy that the children are safe with you and you have found a loving partner to share your life. I do hope you can get this current mess sorted safely. Take care. edited by arohadxb on 03/06/2011

By the way - what does one do about seeing these dogs or adopting one ??? Don't get excited - just thinking it all over - have a husband who would disown me who needs to be persuaded. check dubizzle, the ew classifieds and the pets page. Check out the link for my Kacie (6 months old and most of the hard work done :) lol!) You phone, talk a little then arrange to meet. I have found that quite often it's better to meet on nuetral ground with a different handler. Play, talk, socialize..adopter and adoptee will get a feel for each other and whether it is a suitable match and likely to succeed for both parties. You can have an idea in your mind of what kind of dog will work for you and the fosterer or handler will quickly let you know if their animal in question is likely to suit and worth setting up a meeting. hth

You'll be inhaling the rescue remedy before too long ;) While it makes good sense to choose a home close to the school of choice so the school run doesnt become a daily nightmare for you, you may not get the opportunity for that to work out for you this year. Maybe choose a home that is equidistant to the schools, or: when you are here for your orientation. visit the schools in person and see face to face how you stand on the wait list. Have the kids been put on wait lists or are you registered for assessment? I don't want to worry you but it's not unheard of to be offered a place at your schools of choice a few days or a couple of weeks into the new term/school year, when the school has had a chance to see who has shown up and who not. Are you in email contact with the schools chasing up the situation? Have friends who through sheer doggedness got the answers she required in a timely manner just by not letting the school forget who she was :) Your relocation agent is right, it's nothing to be concerned about because this is just the way it works here, it just seems a very foriegn concept when you first arrive. Oh, and well done on the negogiation BMAP...thats great news.

Would it have been more prudent for her to leave them to rot on the street? No, but -- don't shoot me down -- it may be wise for people to think about other options rather than fostering, such as euthanasia. I seriously do applaud moo moo for her big heart and wonderful actions in taking these animals in, I truly TRULY do [and I know her off-board and she is not only fabulous and gorgeous and a downright marvellous chick, but a saint in this instance'>; I just stick by my thoughts below re the sense of it long-term. Don't think me a horrible person, but these are desperate times for animals and I just wish there was a sensible way to deal with them all. Extending the lives -- and happiness -- of strays is indeed to be applauded but I wonder how much it helps in the long run. :( Thats why it can be a nightmare to rehome the animals WM...euthansia should probably always be an option for animals that cannot be helped, but as it's people who have created the situation for the animals, it's up to people to do their utmost for them. I see earlier in the thread you talk about the psychological impact on animals going from home to home...and that is why quite often you'll find people like moo moo having long term street animals, you just will not re home them with the first numpty that turns up...we all do the best for the animal, and re homing has to be first hard tried for option.

arohadxb I think you really need to read all the posts again. To say that the overwhelming message is that we do not want non western men in the cafe is deeply offensive. which if you read my post again, you will see that some one else has said this, (see the post I have quoted?) and I'm debating it.

My daughter is keen to go - I think I will and observe the action. You clearly have legitimate concerns that need correcting but the overwhelming message I am reading in this thread is that you do not want non western men in the cafe near your kids. Maybe MM is offended by this message and need the cafe revenue to stay afloat in the near term. umm, thats not the overwhelming message at all, as far as my comprehension goes. What everyone has said, is that among other serious safety concerns the cafe is open to the public...ie: ANYONE of any shape, colour, stripe, shade and persuasion with out having children in tow. Is it so far fetched to conscider that a reasonable parent will show concern that an adult male, and to some extent women, would want to frequent a cafe that is over run by small children and toddlers? What is their motivation for doing so? To try and make out that there is some kind of racial slur in all of this is not only far fetched but insulting to peoples intelligence. Given where we live and the vast amount of bachelors living in grim conditions with little or no chance of seeing their own families from one year to another, acknowledging their precense as a concern, is not racist merely sensible.

I'm going to disagree Izzy...i have a houseload of animals and only 1 of them can and will be coming with me when the time comes. I made a commitment to that animal at the time of adoption, the others will be re homed. In actual fact, for some of them I actually make sure I have homes in the pipeline for the if and when time we go. In an ideal world, yes we take on animals for their lifetime..however some animals are rescued and homed because the alternative is death, and a 'for my time in dxb' type home is better than that. I also know that should push come to shove I will do the honourable thing though not popular thing should I not be able to re home rescue animals, and that would be euthanasia. The world is not ideal nor black and white, and what moo moo has done has been to give a life to 5 otherwise doomed creatures. Her circs have changed, as happens, and now its time to rehome the pets. It happens.

So they're finally coming to rid house of it's unwanted quests, but they have said I need to empty all the cupboards, which is fine. But, um, where do i put all the cupboard stuff? Us and animals are vacating for the day, but the cupboard stuff would still be in the house (somewhere) so surely it's getting exposed to spray anyway? Or do they just want stuff out of the cupboards for ease of access?

if they've been frontlined,,,the ticks will go, poor sweet hearts. They're dead, but there may well be a few showing up for a while. Just keep it up...trying to remember what the story was with ticks with mine that long ago! Watch their food...little tums/too much eats/bad poo and vomits normal while they get used to 'real' food. 5 -6 weeks old? wow...very very young...and do you know what? younger pups are a lot easier to home. Sad but true...that cuteness factor matters. or is it advantaged for ticks etc? edited by arohadxb on 31/05/2011

It is a HORRID time of year, and it will get worse...the amount of people who think it's ok to turn animals loose when they leave for the summer is just, well, beyond belief. There are sooo many animals needing homes, care, temporary or otherwise. I've had the most lovely foster pup for 4 months now....6 months old, cute as a button and all the hard work done...do you think I can find a loving family for her? Nyah uh. She's facing euthanasia, because what CAN I DO?

they should extend it to no tobacco YEAR... I did think that if it was to actually have any positive affect. What if tobacco was just banned, what would people do? Would they give up? Nope, it would become a whole underground drug thing...a little like dope where it's not legalized. Theres the addiction thing (cost governments billions) and then theres the tax revenue from tabacco (more billions than you can count)...which country in their right mind wiill give that up do you think?

Has your friend been going through a tough time too? Maybe she was counting on you to remember her this way? Maybe, personally I prefer birthdays or just because gifts. Don't even do family gifts unless we're going home, and then, they may get christmas in July. Being hung up on prezies just seems very short sighted, materialistic and self orientated. AND if she was counting on being remembered, she wouldnt then harp on about the gift part of it, surely?

my point is would the OP feel the same if it was my Australian husband in there having a coffee with his work collegues?? Watch your kids, be vigilant and appreciate that there are places like mini monsters to take your kids to play and get out of the house!!!!!!!...... Peace out...... errr, WHY would your ozzie hubby choose to go to a kids play area with his collegues for a coffee? That in itself is weird...particularly when there is a perfectly good cafe 4 doors down that doesnt have rampant toddlers and kids carreening about the place. Different indeed if dads are taking the kids there to play, but collegues? Friends? What, dxb has a shortage of cafe's now? The health and safety issues with this place generally seem to need addressing and sooner rather than later, so, well done OP. Hope you have had a satisfactory reply from the management and they have decided on a course of action to keep all the kids safe and reassure the parents that this is place where kids will be safe and have fun.

if she is unwell in some way, then am not sure us amature psychologists and general dxb/trollism experts are actually the best people to be diagnosing anything. Nor is deciding to hang her out to dry on every peg she wrote be going to do her good as opposed to more harm. IF she is unwell. If however the woman is truthful and more than a little niave, what good does this do her? As the thread in question went every which way, and she had bowed out of it, having got the information she wanted & needed, would it surprise anyone if she asked for it to be pulled herself? Having said that, thats coming from me who needs to be smacked in the head with a troll to see it coming.

My only concern/worry/niggle would be the sheer volume of personal info she posts, and that would be more out of concern for her rather anything else I am afraid.

Funny isnt it? I don't know what the forums are like, obviously. But expat families we have met there and spent time with seem to have a far more communal, helpful, all in it together feel than here, and different nationalities seem to have great activities and functions going on. Hopefully the forums you stumbled on are not a sign of the kinds of people you will meet and live amongst.

It is actually the law in some countries (or was) that if an item is purchsed within 14 days of a sale, without the person being informed of the sale then they had the right to a refund for the difference. All they needed was their proof of purchase. It is also common in most other countries that if an item is faulty, it be replaced. if it cannot be replaced a refund is given. For the refund to be given you need your reciept to determine at what price the purchase was made, and that amount will be the refund given, regardless of what the origonal price was. However, if a repair or replacement can be effected, a reciept is not neccessary. Obviously shoes, clothes and general consumables are different but for, say, some household goods...the manufacturors have a life time garrantee...as a business that stocks that range from that supplier/manufacturor it is part of your business to honour that. You send off the item, a replacement or repair is effected and it is given to the consumer. It is a time consuming process and quite frankly not something that I can see taking on here much. The major hyper markets and appliance dealers have warranty's but that is an entirely different thing.
