I am deeply fascinated by this thread...we were just the other day discussing how our lives at 5 and 6 were so so different from my daughters life. Disregarding all the other differences and focusing solely on transport...at 5 I walked to school, alone, across many roads including a state highway. Mind you, back then seatbelts werent law either so general circumstances have changed somewhat. The 'bubble' our kids live in concerns me, and I think it's certainly food for thought to bear in mind that our children may not live in this environment all their lives, and they do need to learn some independence so they are capable of being able to cope in different circumstances, if that makes sense? It was highlighted to me back in NZ last summer at a playground..lil miss was playing, and behaving as she does in a playground here...orderly ques, taking turns etc, while typical kiwi bratlings just walk all over each other...she was upset and terrified. Now, how is that preparing her for the real world? and how is that giving her the skills to survive in a competitive world? (her preparation being the mannners taught in a playground here) Now while I love that the kids are so respectful of each other at her school and something to be proud of...it won't cut any mustard if she finds herself back in NZ in a typical primary school! I can't comment on the teens thing, nor what I will or won't do when out time comes for this, because who knows!...like all things it seems to be a balancing act...their safety, their growth. Parenthood, it's a blast hey.

While for arthritis I agree that physio would probably make more sense, I'm a chiro girl all the way. (You'll find that usually people will fall into either osteo camps or chiro and never the twain shall meet :) ) One thing about chiro, practised properly is it does include massage and physio where needed, and our chiro takes a holistic approach to health. If you have a chiro you trust, go for it.

I am watering lawn. Planning on mowing lawn tomorrow. Need to wash sheets and have left windows open upstairs. Would do my patented rain dance inclusive of feathers that never fails, but it failed this year so I need a new dance. I have lit candles, prayed, pleaded, made bargains, asked nicely and outright demanded RAIN. I just don't know what else i can do!

depends on if the cops are there, really. It's an enclave of Oman, so I'd have the insurance anyway...like i said, a friend of ours has been fined for not having it on his hire car, but not everytime.

confused...are you going to mussandam or Dibba? If Dibba, you will head through a check point and they can and do often check all your paper work for vehicles as well as your passports. A friend in hire car has been fined for no Oman insurance at least 50% of the time he has crossed the post with us! But that was when police were stationed on the oman side. We have Oman insurance on our vehicle anyway, so who knows. I think it more or less depends on who you get on the day, and if the police are there as well as the border guards. hth

You *saw* them in Springs' Spinneys at some point? All I saw were the cakes. I wondered if there would be any Creme Eggs. A more important question is, where are they imported from? The Antipodes or the UK? Very different Cadbury's, you know (though I don't know what the UK ones are like since Kraft took them over) :) I actually *bought* some from Spinneys, AND I had the decency to leave some for others. I won't be making that mistake again! They're only the UK ones, but needs must etc

If all the golden sands are in the same place, thats where we stayed when we first arrived. Sort of Bur Dubai? or am I completely wrong? There is Zabeel Park which is possible to get to on foot, if you have a stroller for the little one and don't mind walking! Lamcy Plaza has a very cool indoor play area. Have you a wee map? Or the Dubai Explorer book? You should be near the Spinneys if I have my area right and you can pick these up there. Sounds like you don't plan on driving? The greens might be worth a look as somewhere more permenent to live, or Old Town. hth

Some woman took the toy out of my basket and raced off after her child shouting back, "Sorry! I'm in a hurry." WTF? :\: That is a smackable offense. Yup, I would have given her a huge earful too! Anyhow, in and out of lifts, metro, etc... I'm fortunate to generally be wielding a buggy that has a pointy bit at the front and a decent amount of momentum when it gets going, so if I need to get off/out and am being rugby tackled by in-coming people, they literally get run over, generally a milisecond after I say "excuse me". DH berates me for it, but hey. On the other hand, if I'm waiting to get in/on, I use it as a life lesson for my 3 year old and in a loud voice tell her that we have to let the people off first - now she knows to stand by the side and make room, so I don't need to tell her any more, but you'd be amazed at how some people think twice about their inconsiderate actions when a toddler is being more polite than they are. It also helps that DD plays the game, so to speak and generally says something like "are they naughty for pushing?!" in a very loud voice! Lol! Lil miss was hugely miffed one weekend in ab dabs when she was pushed in front of in a very busy ice cream que (by a couple of adults). She was complaining loudly and very pointedly to me about it, and being rather hot and harrassed I just tried to play the incident down, by saying it didnt matter, never mind etc. So she slots herself in the que 2 places up, and I'm like, get back here, and she's like but you said it didnt matter! Gah! Pushy in people got the point and let us back into our origonal place though :)

Just as an aside after reading that CT (the bit about schools etc) I was reading on yahoo news yesterday that child care centers in oz will be fined if the children take part in any religious activities, such as tree decorating or easter egg hunts. That can't be right surely?

Seriously CT? the glasses and the drinks? blimey, it's like pinching the cutlery at a dinner. I am sitting here shaking my head trying to come up with what possible thought process was going on in their heads to conclude that that was one: and acceptable way to proceed and two: expected of them. mad.

I think it may be part of the transition process after leaving Dubai. For many of us EW is an important part of coping in the UAE and while we may have physically moved on the emotional connection especially with the stories of favourite posters may remain. It naturally peters off after a while until the need to check in is no longer there. That said I have to admit the final few month of a certain poster constantly reminding us that she was leaving and how much better it was going to be started to p me off. When she left I breathed a sigh of relief but alas she is back, not adding value, but giving us details of her life at home and still bitching about life in the ME. I just wish she would get a life or at least get over it. I concur with every word written CT :D Why? why not? self explanatory surely.

Ah what a great response :) Currently we are staying in a hotel appartment in Tecom area. Looking at the ranches or The Villa and thinking about sending her to star international in mirdif. Definatly up for all play dates with people here and people due to arrive! My email is [email protected] if any of you want to arrange anything :) if youre in tecom currently, you are just around the corner from us here at the springs, so would be easy for you to come over for a play. my lil miss goes to Star um al whatever it is (not mirdif!) my addy is ari underscore jo 2002 AT yahoo dot co dot nz Tarti: you know that map youre bringing to the quaffing session when you get here? hubby appalled with my geographical confusion...he informs me that we have spent a lot of time in your Alps, as thats where he does his climbing. ooops.
