Hi MM, welcome in advance to Muscat. I can't help you with homes on the Wave, sorry...we looked there and it wasnt really us. We also moved here from dubai in Jan this year and are loving it. Very outdoors, sports orientated, lots of camping, and the people here are the best. Hubby is also a tri guy, and theres a really great group going...still doing tris in June, sprint distance, early starts. They have a FB group you can join for all the updates about events. Theres also Roadrunners/ mountain bike groups and much more. Little nippers will start again for the kids in hopefully september if it has cooled down enough, and theres beavers and brownies, and all types of classes going for the small ones. (My daughter is 7 & goes to Royal Flight). Guy that runs the little nippers for the kids is also one of the boot camp guys. I have a feeling theres a group that are doing it indoors at the gym on the Wave currently aswell. Rugby for the kids starts up again in September, and the new Funzone has a gym on it's top level that runs classes for kids and women...kickboxing, martial arts and assorted aerobic type things. Theres good swim coaches around as well, so getting the kids training in that won't be at all difficult. My email is: ari underscore jo 2002 at yahoo dot co dot nz Please feel free to get in touch, am more than happy to help out in any way we can. If you are arriving august, I don't think we're back from africa til the 21st-ish, but can meet up after that.

Kempinski hotel. Perfect location. I've heard this is a great hotel. hmm, is if you like walking out of a hotel into a mall, I spos. I'm quite happy staying at the likes of Ibis and Holiday Inn, close to MoE and the metro....Dubai is your oyster really, and you havent spent bucket loads on accom. Leaves you plenty of free cash to spend on treating yourself to other stuff. Depends if the hotel is a major part of your holiday and what features it has becomes important, or, you use it as a base.

One of the new young fellas at hubbys work would like a no hassle no fuss but cheaper option of getting his stuff down here. He's been to all the usual GAC, e-mover type places and been quoted 10,000dh, which seems extreme for his small amount of gear. They seem to quote on a 20ft or half container, regardless of whether you fill it. Is there a man with a van option that will do the actual packing and customs for you? thanks

I've done the whole trip advisor thing and have narrowed it down to 2 places: Chanters Lodge and Bushbuck River House. Has anyone been there recently who can give me that push to just choose one of them? Chanters really appeals, I just wish it was on the river.... Thanks

Wow, thanks everyone! :) I'll try asking my mum again and if it doesn't work, I'll try the cica-care. How much is it and do they sell it at most pharmacies? Because if I do get it I'd have to do it withot my mum realizing. :p ah honey...talk to your mum, and talk to a GOOD pharmicist if you go the cica-care route. Apparently some people can have bad reactions to silicon treatment, so you (and your mum) need to be sure it's the right thing for you. I'm not sure it's available at all pharmacies, and a teeeny wee patch of it was hundreds of dh. I do wonder if a visit with a trusted GP to start over might be a good thing for everyone to begin again at the same place. Take care.

Not sure if you want to spread the word to the stores mentioned in these threads: [url=http://www.englishsabla.com/forum/showthread.php?50366-Pet-shops-in-Muscat '>Link[/url'>, [url=http://board.classifieds1000.com/Oman/Expat/looking_for_pets_pet_store '>link[/url'>, [url=http://muscatconfidential.blogspot.com/2010/04/pet-shops-in-oman-and-what-you-can-do.html'>link[/url'>. thanks GM. To be perfectly honest.... the stores here sell EVERYTHING, and I'm not terribly comfortable with that. I will take her photo around and have people looking out for her, but you know how the dubai culture among expats (mostly) is to re-home/adopt...here people will bang a few hundred dh on their unwanted guinea p1gs and sell on :( It's taking a bit of getting used to. There are amazing people doing amazing work here with animal welfare they're just...i dunno, maybe we don't have the population to support it as well here? Whatever...they do great work, and all by themselves too.

hubby has bought home loads of pics/posters for me to get out round the place...my (HP :) ) printer never works when you need it to. Vets are putting her pic up on their sites, randomn people I talk to are checking petshops...reckon she is all over FB by now and another friend is doing the twitter thing. I just feel so rotten. She's rare enough to be an exotic purchase, and therefore expensive, so worthwhile to steal and sell on. But, people do eat them...and if thats the case I, just fear the worst. And everytime I have left the house today I can see and feel the gardeners all watching me...like they're waiting for a reaction. (but that could be my paranoia talking...I feel pretty violated with having such a personal thing actively taken from me. Weird or not, thats kind of how it feels :( )

I would also recommend Dr Baghat. As arohadxh said, he is a lovely man and only operates if needed. He totally put my DD at ease and was able to pass a camera in her nose and throat at 2.5 yrs old! She needed her adenoids out and grommets inserted ( also had lost some hearing & was developing a speech problem) and I asked him if he could take her tonsils out while he was doing the rest and he was horrified and scolded me! :) Anyway, he can do the procedure as a day case at either Belhoul or American Hospital about a dh9000 difference between the 2. He did not end up doing the actual surgery on my DD as I opted to have it done at home while on holiday. She did have her tonsils out too which were apparently rotten. She is a different child since having it done and even complained about everyday noises being too loud! It's the best thing we ever did for her. No more illness or speech problems. 2 yrs on and the grommets are still in her ears, although they have usually fallen out by this time. lol! same :) Lil miss was a different child, world was turned up too loud for her and we have just blessed Dr B for his intervention with our kidlet ever since. We actually did have the surgery at Belhoul, and were overwhelmed with how beautifully it went. Not just the price difference influenced us (you get Dr Baghat as the surgeon regardless) but it was their personal service at the hospital....from friends experience american hospital can be too busy to offer the same level of before/after care for child and nervous parents, but we were looked after so well at belhoul. Lil Miss's grommets also didnt come out by themselves so she had an additional surgery to remove one...the other Dr Baghat plucked out in his Dr's room without missy moo even being aware of it. All her illness's vanished over night, her speech and developement 'delays' disappeared as soon as she could hear again, wonderment.

nope. Her pic and/or her story and what not are on just about all the sites though, through those wonderful girls that do so much for animal welfare here. Fear the worst, and just can't reconcile myself to not knowing what has happened. Really really sad. Just what kind of person does this?

I can highly recommend Dr Baghat at the Medical International Specialist Center on Al Wasl Rd. He will only operate if it is completely neccesary and he runs all the tests himself. A little camera into the ear drum so you can see what is happening there, the pressure testing, the hearing testing and he's a lovely man. Totally put our wee one at her ease, and retained our confidence in him throughout. hth

cat-lover, if mum remains unconvinced about a peel, or seeing another specialist I have been using an effective thingumy on my surgical scarring on my arm. My ortho recommended stuff that appears to be unavailable in the region, and I eventually found a pharmicist who convinced me to try this stuff called cica-care. It's a silicon type gel sheet (not at all inexpensive, but you re use it up to 3 months or so...it comes with all the care instructions) that you put over the scarring. You start off for a about an hour a day and build up to constant use. Even when I'd got up to using it for 8 hours a day (well, at night) the difference was noticable. My scar has lightened, become less thick and 'ropey' looking and regained some of the natural flexibility of unharmed skin. Might be something else to think about?

(sorry, side tracking thread slightly) but, Red, you have no idea what a wee thrill it is to see your car stickers even here in Oman! You have done/are doing a GREAT job. I have a taxi driver who ferries me around daily and I got him to install seat belts for us. He was completely bewildered as to the why of it, but now is happily ensuring the myriad of kids are safely buckled up and will even stow carseats in the boot for us so I don't have to lug them about. And he is a straight up traditional country boy Omani...so he probably thinks it's just one of my oddities, but he does it all the same.

Get a cheap pack of blank cd's or a load of old scratched ones, and hang them from twine, string or ribbon. Hang them from trees, balconies...makes a pretty mobile effect in your garden when the wind blows through them, and it keeps the birds away. My mom's gardener in the UK recommended this idea and proceeded to set them up. It didn't work at all!!! The birds continued to happily destroy the garden and just walked around the CDs, lol they weren't even remotely scared. Not to mention that all the CDs hanging from string looked hideous! lol! Back to the drawing board then....

Hubby is really really keen on doing a stint in the states (though the annual leave they get has smothered the idea for him somewhat) but i for some reason have as a big a mental block about moving there as I do for China (another place he'd love to go) Theres no rational reason for me dragging my feet, and there are many parts of the states I'd love to explore, but i just can't see moving there as an option. Whats got you guys hooked?

Really, I would just choose the place I would really want to go to and then if Fly dubai suited, and the price was right, I'd go with them. We've used them on several within-4-hours-of-the-UAE trips and they're a perfectly satisfactory airline. I will say that I do prefer flying INTO dubai with them, than OUT of. Terminal 2 ain't much, but it's ok if your just arriving here, not hanging about to leave.

Beebers, by 'opaques' I meant opaque stockings, which are not solid (say, anywhere from 50-80 denier) and are not meant to be worn instead of pants/leggings. Leggings are thicker but still don't leave much to the imagination- they are meant to be worn with, not instead of, other clothes. Gym pants and gym leggings are something different entirely. Some women either don't know or don't care the difference. That was my point. I see. I wish some women felt so passionate about not wearing white pants with huge granny panties underneath as they do about not wearing leggings instead of pants!! :D Better that than a thong and a dimpled ****! :\: Don't be knocking the granny pants! You haven't experienced true unadulterated comfort until you've come over to the 'dark side'....but I am curious. If not granny pants, and a g-string is so shudderingly wrong that just thinking about it causes my eyes to sting, just what are you supposed to wear under white trousers?

Just a quick note...it's REALLY hot here at the moment, hotter than Dubai. I don't know about you, but I really didnt cope well with heat when pregnant. That said, Crowne Plaza, Intercontinental, Hyatt, all have really nice pools, and the sea temp is just lovely at the moment. So if youre just going to have a nice relax you'll manage fine, it's just if you want to head out and about, it's HOT. For something a bit different you could look at some of the mountain areas...we're still camping (but there are hotels) as about an hour and a half from Muscat into the hills the temp goes from 42 to a delicious 24!

where I could donate all my baby stuff like a baby crib, bath/nappy station, car seat, buggy, milk bottles, clothes and toys etc. I would prefer to donate to an orphanage, is there anyone that accepts such items in Dubai? Theres a charity in Ajman, Al Ihsan that looks after women and fatherless children. You would have to find some way to get it there though. Indimus (username on EW) collects for a Sharjah childrens charity group, and she could probably arrange to collect from you if given enough notice. Plum2 (EW username) works for the (is it a special needs school> I forget) In Al Barsha. Would be easy to drop off there if you put a message out to her for directions. Couple of girls on here collect for different Nepal/Africa orphanges as well.

lil miss does little nippers (surf lifesaving type thing for kids), your man who runs it has bought the start time back half an hour because of the heat...primarily because it's tough on the parents. (so now it's at half past silly o clock in the morning instead of a time just bearable :)) The kids are ok...be smart about your childrens (and yours) fluid and salt intake. Yes, it is freaking hot, and while we've had temps here in the high 40's the kids have only just moved onto the 'hot play' system at school. I admit, there was one afternoon this week where I just could not face the 2 minute walk to the shop for supplies, and that was all because I had been out and about for days and days in a row and was cooked. You need to be smart about heat, not just sun,.

Was the sea clean looking? and not stinky? blowed if I know hon, sounds yukky so thank goodness is clearing. Only mentioned a reaction as my skin after swimming in sea will come up rashy a week later, just on arms etc that has been in the sun, not leasions though (unless I scratch it in sleep and manage to give self an infection). Mind you...we had had that storm that weekend, and while our beaches were washed clean and clear, maybe that part of the coast got some kind of fallout from it?

Given if you look at a map (the off road explorer ones) the area for Meadows/Springs/Lakes is actually called Emirates Hills...3, I think from memory, and any form you have to fill in for offical type stuff requires E. Hills 3 as part of it, and the census has you down as E. Hills as your area of residence...your woman with her karama bag and the ex prado is not so far wrong ;) To the OP, good for you. You need to meet as many people as you can in your area and even Dubai wide, particularly if youre staying for the summer. Good luck. You've landed in expat land so thats a good start.

Hi, Hubby said he showed up at the office with everything...all the copy-ing etc was done there on site. When he says 'everything' he can't remember either what everything actually was. Passport, labour, residency, tenancy contract (signed) and any other paperwork an agency might have in with it. He also said was very straightforward, even as unprepared with lack of information as he was back then.

We've just done the lot from 'here', and they arrived safe and sound this week. We had a parent do it through a lawyer, then send on to the FO who we had already sent the request to via email/phone. The most difficult part was proving to birth/death/marriages that we were actually who we said we were. (Not relevent in your case AA) The FO then sent directly to here. It was a real delight dealing with people over the phone back home, i will tell you that! They took payments from our creditcard when they recieved our documents, and had done the process, not before. Couldnt have been simpler...and the process BM listed for me, below in this thread was accurate to the t crossing.
