[i'>Today the watchman said he had killed one of the stray cats that was fighting, and possibly some kittens he found in the compound[/i'> Victoria, did he tell you this? How awful. I strongly advise you to keep your own cats inside because they're clearly in great danger if they're outside. It's just shocking that the watchmen has carte blanche to kill cats, some of whom may be people's pets. Unbelievable.

[i'>Agree, agree, agree on the rest. Just driving around our neighborhood there, my heart breaks. The way we "inherited" ours was a scenario that began with pet sitting of sorts, and turned into "we are not taking him across the world with us after all" three months later.[/i'> Beebers, you know the kind of people who decide to chuck their pet out because they can't be bothered to take him with them when they move make me very angry. Lucky for your cat that you guys were there to care for him. Our cat was left in the garden of our previous villa by his last 'family.' They took his collar off and tossed him out to starve when he was about seven months old. It's just unbelievable. I don't know how anybody could do that to a pet they had living with them, I think it's fricking disgraceful. Ours has never got over the trauma of several months of abandonment and he's very frightened of people, but he's very affectionate to us and he's particularly attached to my husband who was the first one to meet him and feed him so I know where you're coming from, good on you for looking after him and as you say, better maybe not to mix things up by adding a feline companion in case it all descends into a fur catastrophe. As to the food, I'd be cautious of dry food if a cat is mega keen on it or seems addicted, I feed ours one can of tuna per day, he loves [i'>Sheba[/i'> and I give him Waitrose dry food salmon flavour it's in a large brown packet and available in Spinneys/Waitrose. Dunno where else it's available, but you can get it in Dubai. Our cat likes it, but he doesn't really love it and it doesn't make him run up trees or howl outside his food cupboard like a certain other brand! Hope this helps.

[i'>Not a place you want to let cats outside due to cruelty, poison in random places, and a lot of strays.[/i'> OK Beebers, understand. In that case, definitely better he doesn't go outside and from what you've said, he has no desire to do so. Beyond that, maybe check the dry food because I reckon some brands contain ingredients which have a frenetic impact on feline behaviour. As Izzy says, perhaps consider adopting one of the strays to give yours some company? Of course the downside of that scheme is that if they've don't get on, you've doubled the problem and in general I think cats are fairly solitary creatures. Despite all the awful sad stories here, I have never considered getting another cat because ours is so territorial I know the arrival of cat 2 would drive him mad. It's so sad that there are so many places where cats have such a grim existence. Tragic that so much of the world is such a dismal place for humans and animals. Sad stuff.

[i'>The cat is alone 5 days a month and with the maid, but this is not a new setup. [/i'> Beebers, a couple of thoughts. First up, to reiterate what Nomad said, I would strongly advise you to get him neutered. One of the main reasons is because of the desperate problem of stray cats here, but I understand yours is an indoor cat and I would suggest that poses its own problems. He's young, right? They need lots of play and stimulation because cats in general, but Maus in particular, have loads of energy and if they're not going outside, they don't have any natural setting in which to dissipate that energy by doing all the usual stuff, chasing ghekos, guarding their territory, in the case of ours, rolling over in the sand and returning basted in debris! Has he got enough toys? Try him with toys that move of their own accord, like the battery operated 'mouse.' Being left alone for a long time is going to make him very affection starved, and I've noticed that these local cats really crave affection. Ours will sometimes swipe at me or my husband if we don't stroke him enough, even if he's sitting next to us! As to the shower, cats in general really hate a locked door and will meow outside until they're allowed in, especially in a room which isn't 'off limits,' so I would advise leaving the door open. Also, dry foods can definitely cause manic behaviour. Ours started running up trees and acting deranged when he was given a certain fr 'frenetic' cat food. Never again. I think a mixture of wet and dry is much healthier, ours loves tuna and he has that with a less frenetic dry brand and his behaviour is not as manic. Give me a shout if I can be of any more help and good luck. edited by Artemis2 on 15/01/2015

Instead of asking if this behaviour is 'normal,' a more incisive question would be is this behaviour making you happy? Reading your OP, the answer to that appears to be a resounding no. This is the courtship phase of the relationship, when you are being 'wooed.' Do you think that the situation is likely to significantly improve or significantly deteriorate after marriage? Lavish spending on other women at brunches while insisting you go Dutch? I reckon many would regard that as a serious concern. Or a deal breaker.

MollyMoo, Lola, it is really irritating. I wonder if these muppets who are bombarding everyone with junk realise that in perhaps a sizeable number of recipients they are triggering the opposite reaction to what they intended? Like I said, there is one specific retailer that I now deliberately avoid at all costs because of their rubbish texts about sales and I'm sure I'm not alone. Why patronise any brand that clogs up your phone with garbage? Does anyone have any idea how to effectively block these companies who appear to have found a method of eluding the spam blocker on phones?

mum2girls, It does sound like something happened when you were away. It's possible they might have become slightly wilder after a couple of weeks without much human affection. Does your maid actually like them or does she see them as a burden? Maybe the best plan is for the adults to show them a lot of love and affection but maybe advise your children to not pick them up until you figure out the reason for their apparently changed behaviour. By the way, what cat food are they eating? Certain dry foods can make cats very manic, maybe switch them to a wet diet for a while....

I highly recommend getting a water fountain, ours loves it and he's drinking more water since its arrival. I noticed him trying to drink from the source when I would pour water into his bowl from a water bottle and that's what gave me the idea of getting one, I think it's in their DNA to have a preference for flowing water over stagnant or still.

Prior to 2008, there was a global property bubble which was directly caused by cheap credit, that bubble most certainly was not restricted to this region. The fall out of this in PIIGS is a salutary warning. If you had bought property in Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Italy during the bubble? Some very unhappy investors in those countries. If you look at Spain in particular, there have been well documented problems with developments on the Costa Del Sol, including villas being demolished because it transpired they were built without the correct planning approvals or land ownership documents. One of the consequences of the Club Med meltdown is the enactment of taxation aimed specifically at expats, Didn't Spain recently introduce taxation on income earned beyond the EU? Investing in any asset in any location incurs risk. And Ladymary, I think your concern with what a Labour victory might mean in the UK in terms of raised taxation is a valid point. When you have a mansion tax in a country where cheap credit, low interest rates, increased immigration and limited housing supply has caused house prices to rocket to vertigo inducing heights? Not a pretty picture. Caveat emptor as always, but housing bubbles and crashes are a global phenomenon. Not just restricted to one region.

Hi Sierra, Don't stress about it, he will improve over time. You say that he's spent a considerable time in the vet for treatment? He's probably very reluctant to return and that is why he's very frightened of the cage. As others have said, organise a home visit, it will put your mind at rest. As I mentioned, I used the City Vet Hospital and they were very sympathetic, explain your situation to them. Here's their contact details: City Vet 043883990 http://www.cityvethospital.ae/contact/ Our cat is much better than he used to be, although his strong aversion to the cage will probably never disappear. I just wish that people weren't so callous and stupid when they get a fad for something furry and then abandon that pet - the misery and cruelty those people cause can be seen all over this town. Good luck sierra.

Hi Sierra, First of all, good on you for trying to help a stray, I understand what you're going thru because it reminds me a lot of my experience with my own cat - he was left to starve in the garden of our villa and even after two years with us, he's still frightened of the cage and detests going to the vet. Here's my advice. Get a vet to do a home visit first. Initially, I used [i'>City Vet[/i'>, they were very good and if you explain the situation you should be able to find a vet who is sympathetic. If your cat hates the cage, trying and failing to get him in there is going to be more traumatic than a house visit. Once you've got him his shots and had his eczema sorted, hopefully he'll become calmer with time. Best of luck sierra and give me a shout if you need any further advice, our cats sound like they have a similar nervous temperament!

Gritt, I don't know whether it's 'normal' or not, but if I were you I would enjoy it. Some people keep a dream diary because apparently we're programmed to forget our dreams and if you think about it, although you might remember them with clarity upon waking, they're usually erased from your memory after a few hours. I read somewhere that everybody dreams every night, but what differentiates people is whether they remember them. Dreams are a critical mechanism for humans, so I wouldn't worry about it, you could start a dream diary if you wanted to record them.

ST90, As Daza has said, it seems pretty unlikely that you are six stone overweight if your diet is as you describe. Which leads to two possible explanations. Either you aren't accurately recording what you eat or you have an underlying medical condition which isn't being treated. As others have suggested, thyroid problems might account for unexplained weight gain and the best way to determine that would be to consult an endocrinologist and have the necessary blood tests. I don't mean to be harsh, but six stone is a significant amount of weight and it really is hard to imagine that your current diet would induce anything like that weight gain. Good luck with sorting it, but you will have to be rigorously attentive to everything you eat in order to identify where the problem lies, if in fact the problem is diet rather than an undiagnosed health issue.

Mum2girls, I don't know what you should do, but echoing what Mannikat has said, inheritance can cause huge issues which reverberate for decades. One of my cousins was given a property worth a vast amount of money, while his two siblings were essentially excluded from that inheritance. Although all three have done very well financially, the property has caused massive resentment amongst those siblings, they don't speak to each other and one of them barely sees his mother. Dunno. I don't really think it's a good idea to exclude a child simply because they've done well in life, or skew it in favour of those who have been less successful. As Mannikat says this issue can cause massive problems within families and from what I've personally witnessed with friends and families, I think it's a very difficult thing to navigate if you deviate from just an equal split.

Sarah, it's absolutely grotesque. She's the poster girl for too much, too soon, filler, botox, she looks like the [i'>Bride of Wildenstein[/i'>. And you know what's even more astonishing? Compare 59 year old Donatella to 69 year old Debbie Harry. OK. One of them is Rock Royalty and the other is merely the sister of Versace, so there's that. Derien, it sounds like you've been thru a very hard time and as others have commented, your maid appears to have a total lack of empathy about your mother and seems to regard you as nothing other than a limitless supply of funds. Maid threads often cast the employer in an extremely dim light and my sympathies often lie with the maid, but in this case, her behaviour sounds pretty grim. My advice is not to renew her contract because if relations between you have deteriorated to the extent you describe, I don't think it's a good idea to have her living with you. She sounds like a nightmare to be honest, and it sounds like you've been under a tremendous amount of pressure. Good luck resolving things Derien.

Bird, I feel your pain. You don't feel any pain yet? Believe me, if you go ahead with this, you soon will. Here's my advice, FWIW: A) Find a room with some nice cool tiles. Lie down and scream. This is a critical part of the process. You will be revisiting it often. B) You have to decide between a cement pool or a fibre glass pool. As far as I've gleaned, the advantages of a cement pool is that you have a lot of design flexibility, it's a solid structure and the tiles won't fall off every five seconds. A fibreglass pool has limited designs, is prone to pressure from the surrounding sand and suffers from tile loss. However, the big advantage is that it doesn't necessitate four months of guys living in your garden. C) Once you've decided between fibre glass and cement, you can then select whichever companies specialise in each option. You should probably aim to meet with at least three. D) After multiple discussions, you will receive quotes. The quotes will continue to escalate to absurd levels, devoid of any relationship to the low cost of labour here. See point A). Repeatedly. E) You will start to dream about living somewhere with no sand, no pools, no prospect of four months of workers in your garden. You will fantasise about immediately moving to Switzerland, and the work hasn't even started yet. You will also become oppressively aware of just how long the building nightmare is going to continue. Months. And months. And months. See point A) F) Oh, and then there's the paperwork...... see point A)

sourskittle, Like Daza says, L.K. Bennett are good. Another tip is to look for shoes where the heel is balanced with a kind of platform effect at the front because that cushions the impact of the heel height. Shop around and try department stores where you have a wider choice of brands?

[i'>Heartless, vile, disgusting excuses for people....Doggy is safe and being looked after between a couple of people in my community. We're trying to find her a new home. She's a 10 month old female. But sadly black dogs always get overlooked[/i'> Fairydust, the answer to your question is exactly as you've stated, they're disgraceful people who shouldn't be allowed anywhere near any animal ever. Good on you for trying to find the dog a new home, it's just dreadful that in the 21st century this callous behaviour is so endemic in Dubai. We found our cat starving in the garden of our villa, the previous occupants had taken off his collar and tossed him out when they moved. It's unfathomable and even though we've had him now for a couple of years, he's never got over the trauma of that experience, he is terrified of strangers and very jumpy. It makes me so angry when I hear about episodes like the one you describe, and it's very difficult to find homes for abandoned animals because those who want to help already have their own pets. It's especially infuriating to hear people who didn't neuter their cats and then feign surprise when they're unable to find homes for multiple kittens. These people are shockingly irresponsible, it's an absolute disgrace. Good luck with finding her a home Fairydust, sorry I can't be of more help, but Lord Fur wouldn't tolerate it!
