Dear RuthM, We are really sorry we didn't have any free appointments to see your dog's hot spot on Saturday, however, I felt it important that I reply to clear up a few misconceptions. Yes, although it is falcon season and we are busy, we do not refuse to treat any animal in an emergency. On Saturday we had several emergencies to deal with including (but not exclusive of) two puppies who had eaten rat poison and were critical, and a cat with a foreign body in its abdomen. We also had a full list of booked (non-falcon) appointments. We have definitely not 'effectively shutdown'. We will never refuse an emergency (in fact we are one of the few vets here in Dubai still offering this service 24/7), but we do sometimes have to prioritise some over others (if the horrible situation arises that there are multiple calls or arrivals). What one person perceives as an emergency may not be as requiring of immediate attention as others; the vets and nurses only two hands ;-). As a general rule of thumb I am sure you would agree we would have to prioritise life threatening situations as a main priority. We are glad your dog managed to see another vet to receive treatment, and hopefully we will be able to assist you with your DPDs :-) in the future. Jane Walker Practice Manager, Nad Al Shiba Vets

Obviously depends what you want - couples only, or a more family feel ... Husband and I on our own this Christmas, and we have booked Frankies for Christmas Day - 490 aed 5 course inc house beverages. We went two years ago and it was a good feel for couples / singles etc. Mulled wine on arrival and pianist and jazz singer belting out the Christmas classics in the bar. I guess the big brunches would be good for families with kids etc.

You might need them sedated for their shaves, plus dental can be done at same time. Contact Nad Al Shiba vets who can help with both. www.nadvethosp.com

Best vet in Dubai, and closest to DSO, is Nad Al Shiba vets, located in Nad Al Shiba 1. From DSO take Al Ain road heading into Dubai, take turn off for Nad Al Shiba 1/2, and drive over the top of Al Ain Road. Go straight over two roundabouts, and keep going straight for a couple of kms, and you will see a sign directing you left down a road/track. The building is sandy coloured, with a dome on top. They stock Royal Canin.

We eat quinoa at least once a week on average and find stores supplies very hit and miss. We usually have 'superfood salad', with quinoa, broccoli, pomegranite, feta, mint, parsley, spring onion, tomatoes, pumpkin seeds all chopped in it and forked through with lemon juice / olive oil dressing :)

Please be aware that she will need to contact the dozen or so veterinary practices in Dubai with the microchip number and see if the dog is registered at any of them, and get contact details that way ... This worked for me a few months ago with a cat I found ... Its best to email them all.

I have taken in, via EW poster Alexis, an entire male, black and white long hair cat, that was in distress in Victory Heights. He has obviously been somebody's pet at some point as purrs when his head is rubbed, and currently just loves being curled up in the sink in the bathroom. He has obviously been on the street for a while, but wondered if any VH residents have seen this guy about historically, or whether he is someones missing pet?? I note there is a post from a year and a half ago from kaz1 regarding a long haired black and white cat that the security guards had tied up with a bowl of water, that was never resolved ... Was this him back then? He is still pending a vet trip, which I fear may end in his demise, so clutching at straws that there is a family missing him somewhere ... Obviously will do a chip check / FIV test before unreversible decisions are taken about his future at the vets in the coming days ...

Hey MrsMopp, There is a Desert Ranch near the 7s Ground at Al Sahra, and a Desert Palm (i have ridden at both). K2's prices are cheaper than both of these other stables, but not sure if its because they are just getting strted.

From Al Khail Road take Meydan Road towards NAS, go straight over two roundabouts, then go right down a road that says 'private access road'. Then take next right at crossroads, and then next right again. There are little red/white signs if you look hard enough! When you see big villa on right, take second gate and drive straight through to next gate, and a chap comes out and opens it. Keep driving straight past the gazelles on right, and there is a little car parking bit marked out.

I have ridden at desert ranch a couple of times ... I haven't ridden at K2 yet, just visited ... What is interesting with K2 is that they have these indoor menages which although no ac, might be more bearable temperature wise than outdoors as the weather heats up. He is having roof fans installed shortly. Location is better too for my riding companions. I am getting together an adult group lesson for 7 on Tuesday night, so will report back after.

Had quite a positive visit. They have two menages - one they use as a barn and have a dozen or so riding school horses and ponies in, the other they can do lessons in. Plus outside areas too. Had a nice chat with Alex the French guy who is running it, and have booked in for a lesson next Tuesday :) For info and bookings best to call Joey the 'bookings guy' on 0553877941.

I have been concerned recently by the amount of horses being euthanaised in the horse racing industry, but there is a big difference between the two horses being put down at the Grand National after falls from those giant sized jumps, and the three horses who died as a result of 'catastrophic breakdown' on the flat at Meydan in the Gold Cup. Generally, every time the Grand National is run, due to the size of the field, size of the jumps, there are always a handful of fatalities. This does not excuse it by any means, but there a obvious reasons for the broken legs etc that are sustained, and although they 'try' to make the jumps safer every year, by the nature of hurdles and jump racing, it is going to out more strain on the horse. What concerns me more are the increasing number of flat racing 'catastrophic breakdowns' that are occurring globally, with, it seems, little investigation as to the reasons why. Is it that these horses are being bred with lighter bones to make them that 1000th of a second faster, is it that ground isn't watered sufficiently to ensure that it is faster creating record times, is it overuse of legal drugs such as anti-inflammatories etc pre-race? The point is that no one really knows, and the horse racing industry seem to brush the subject under the carpet. Surely a horse shouldn't snap / shatter bones, purely by the action of galloping in a race - something they would have done thousands of times pre-race in training? I have also been following the changes in Kennel Club breeding rules in the UK following the documentary 'Pedigree Dogs Exposed' 3 years ago (which at the time led the BBC to cease television coverage of Crufts) and it seems breeding for healthy dogs, rather than ones that just meet the KC 'type' is gradually, slowly, happening. I wish there were a documentary team around to do a similar investigation into race horse health versus speed? Could bone density tests be done pre-race? Could ground be scientifically measured and minimum levels put in place for races? Surely with the money in the industry, and the millions that are potentially lost every time a horse dies on the track, these are straightforward measures that could be taken?

We had this last year with a visiting 2.5 year old niece who came out with chicken pox while she was here. I think the rule is that the last spot should have crusted over, but it might be safe to get a doctors note confirming she is no longer infectious on Wednesday or Thursday to carry with you just in case.

It was the Bodylines spa at The Cove Rotana in RAK, so I can't rock up easily to complain. I have made an appointment with a GP for this afternoon, that specialises in dermatology, so will see how I get on.

Ooooh, I have a new 'find' in this department to share ... Try Chi'Zen at Festival City Marina Promenade ... Near to Jamie's Italian. It is licensed and has a drinks offer on Thursday and Friday nights of 5 drnks for 88 aed (not wine though, only beer, spirits and 5/6 cocktails). Their whole peking duck is 200 aed (you can also purchase a half duck) which they carve at the table, and then when enough is served for pancakes, they ask how you would like the rest cooked (black pepper sauce etc) take duck away and then come back 10/15 mins later with a whole other dish :). We did comment that this would be enough for 3/4, rather than the 2 we ordered it for. They also do dim sum, barbecue chicken steamed buns, and fried duck buns, as well as loads of other yummy options. Their prices were really good too.

I am in the same boat, and have spoken to vet about it. He said there isn't a max age, just based on fitness of dog. However, having lost our slightly younger dog very suddenly and unexpectedly recently, I've come to the conclusion that I suspect he will pass away before that point, and if he hasn't cross that bridge when we come to it.

I took these two girls (and their brother) on in early December, on the understanding that they all had permanent homes to go to, if I socialised them for a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, all the homes fell through, and although I was successful homing the boy kitten to a lovely family, these two girls have not found that special place yet. These are not Feline Friends kittens, and are available for free adoption. They are approximately 12 weeks old, and desperately need a good home (together or separately), as I currently can't spend much time with them and they are shut away separately from the rest of the household. https://picasaweb.google.com/102536995893635721507/KittensNeedingHomes?authuser=0&feat=directlink If you are interested email me at missuswalker at yahoo dot co dot uk ....
