We're moving to 'The Villa' from Arabian Ranches next week - at 'The Villa' we're getting a 4/5 bedroom detached villa with a private pool, for 120k (one or two are a little cheaper). The Villa is situated on Emirates Road between Arabian Ranches and Al Ain Road, behind Falcon City. On Arabian Ranches you could get a 2/3 bedroom terraced townhouse, with a garden, and communal pool for the same money. Edited to add that usually it's advisable to live somewhere near to where DH works, or where the children will go to school. edited by assisi on 21/01/2011

I would say there is usually between 20-30 at an adoption day. I'll be there tomorrow trying to get the lovely young chap Mimo a home :) and I believe Mr Houdini will be there too with his fosterer:- http://picasaweb.google.com/102536995893635721507/JaneSHolidayMisfits# Jess is available too, but she's a bit too nervous to go to an Adoption Day.

I meant to report on a 'lost and found Falcon birds' internet forum or anything like that? Apparently if the bird is outside the tracker range it can't necessarily be found. Although slightly worried that if it stays 'at large' on Arabian Ranches our fluffy pets may be the next target ... it was quite a big one!

Depends what sort they are ... the thick twill type that you can get in brown, red or green (I think) advice dry clean only.

I've posted it to my Facebook status with a link to this thread and asked my Dubai friends to share. If we all do this, it will help to spread the word.

If you're staying at the Marina Bay Sands you need to go to the rooftop infinity pool and get someone to take your photo! We've been up and had a look, but not swum (that's only available to guests staying at the hotel). Soooo cool!!!

Nad Al Sheba vets is your best bet ... they are sympathetic and helpful :) I suspect they'd be cheaper than ABVC. This is their website with directions www.nadvethosp.com .

If you were to adopt one from Feline Friends, depending on the age of the kitten/adolescent/adult, it might have everything done already (ie if over 5/6 months - I have two fosters to be homed separately currently at this point), so a donation to FF is all you're looking at (and none of the hassle of vet appointments etc). If adopting a kitten from Dubizzle / non FF, it probably won't have had anything done so you mainly have to get:- Initlal First vaccination 3-4 weeks later Second vaccination plus Rabies vaccination Worming Microchip (sometimes done at vaccination point, or if not at neutering while under anaesthetic) Registration (15 dirhams I think) Neutering (Spay or Castration) at 5/6 months old If intending to be able to take cat/kitten to UK at any point, Rabies Blood Test (about 1000 Aed, I think). You will also need to purchase litter tray, litter, cat carrier, bowls, food, toys etc. And then take the cat for annual vaccination boosters. The cost of each initial vet stage above is between 100-200 dirhams each thing (maybe 300 for a spay), depending on which vet you choose. If you call a couple up, they will give you their prices. edited by assisi on 11/01/2011

Hi cymraes We are currently looking to move to exactly this, but in the next two weeks :) I would say it might be better for you to wait until March, as more and more are getting released over the next 1-2 months and you will have more choice on what area, than you do currently. You never know rentals might even go down further too if there is even more competition. A factor that you should consider is the pool / garden orientation to getting sun - we're looking at one right now, but the whole garden and pool has no sun after 12/1pm as it's in the villa's own shadow, and we're really undecided as to whether this annoy us or not :) Another hint is to go on Google Earth and look at it from above. It's good having shade in the back garden in the afternoon. We have it in our current home and it's great as it means the children can play outside even when it's hot. The pool will warm up with the morning sun and then you can enjoy the shaded area all afternoon. Some people have to go to a lot of expense to erect shade structures over their pools so that the area is comfortable to use. Thanks for that A Rancher ... it will help with our decision making ...

Thanks for the update RuthM ... frustratingly if this is the same cat re Palmera / Jeanettesmar then I saw the owner in Le Marche today (male / white / British / late 30s), and thought at the time 'so you haven't moved away then, you just don't want the cat anymore ...'. But on the other hand, it must be frustrating if she does continually wander.

I'm doing this right now too ... we're moving off AR and going to The Villa where there are hundreds of empty properties being handed over to owners right now, and it seems that these owners are not too chuffed, according to www.skyscapercity.com about being levied with 25k connections fees to DEWA :\: So you would think they would be biting your hand off for one cheque for the year, maybe 10k off the asking price, immediate lease start, but trouble is agents are generally all *** and don't even tell them what you're offering. Urrgggh.:( (Can you tell I'm getting frustrated);)

Mich - did you manage to get a Mazaya for 100k ... they are advertised at 120k ... we are looking but could really do with a 100/110k rental rather than 120k.

Have checked with the adopter of George and Midnight, and Midnight is safe and sound at home in Alvorada. Although, frustratingly, George, the tabby and white boy, went missing 2 days ago!! Anyway, this also could be a black cat from Palmera (thread link below) that jeanettesmar has been feeding in her garden for over a year now. Does the black cat you have, have a distinctive/loud voice? Why I ask, is because the cat I'm referring to did. We found it once in Palmera 4 when we lived there last year, and it had walked all the way from Palmera 2, and it did this regularly. I think it's not too caring owners got fed up with it always 'absconding', plus it's loud voice, and in the end moved house without it :( I doubt FF would have room for her - they are fielding multiple telephone calls daily regarding this kitten or that cat, and only have a small band of volunteers who will house cats like this. The best bet would to put a poster in Le Marche / Spinneys and Vetcare over the Polo Club putting it up for homing ... black cats tend to be more in demand than others, funnily enough. I currently have 3 foster cats, in 3 separate rooms, so no room at the inn here. Sorry I can't be of more help ...

I homed a Feline Friends all black girl to a lady who lived in Alvorada back at the end of November, who could be a bit nervous. I'll drop her a text to check it's not her. Also, the cat the thread below is an all black cat (this cat was in the same situation a year ago when I lived in Palmera). http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=130901 Are you sure she's a girl?

I believe it's better and cheaper to get them made out of wood, than buy the plastic moulded ones. One reason is that the wooden ones can be tailor made to the size of your dog, to the nearest inch, whereas the plastic moulded ones generally come in only 4/5 standard sizes, so when you're paying for air-freight by the cubic kg, it's best to get your box as small as is legally allowed for your dog. If you check out Dubai Kennels and Cattery's webside www.dkc.ae you can get them made through them, and these is a good info page about travel boxes.

We're looking for a new place right now and the real estate agents I've come into contact with have been cr8p. They say they'll call you back, and never do. Generally send you to a villa that's open, so that they don't have to meet you there, and generally do completely zero work. Whether this has been especially bad over the Christmas / New Year period as they don't really want to work, who knows? I'm hoping they'll improve next week!
