Thanks again for all the thoughts. Update is that although my maid went for a new visa medical on the 27th January, she is actually 13 weeks pregnant, according to the scan today. So the blood test for the medical obviously missed an 8 week pregnancy... I really thought they checked for pregnancy as part of the test, but obviously not, so now on the search for a new maid asap. If anyone is knows of a great maid who is definitely not interested in having more kids then i'd love to know about them :)

Thanks all. I won't be banning her - She is lovely (very silly, but that's not a crime), and I don't want to make this harder for her than it already is. I think she caved to pressure from her husband and family, without actually thinking through the consequences. My options as I see them are to send her home now (or as soon as I get a replacement) which makes for a very rushed stressful period, or I let her stay till she is 6 months, as suggested, and in that time get a replacement, and have a hand over. If she stays, then I guess we will have to fork out for the scans and other medical procedures - we looked at getting insurance for her, but most don't cover pregnancy till you have been with them for a year anyway. We are speaking to her and her husband tonight, to discuss options. Another way to go is option 3, where I start looking for a new maid, and whether I find one asap, or if I have to wait till closer to the 6 month mark, once I have one, then I will have to send her home. Due to visa issues (put her on my hubby's and then due to a job change, had to put her on mine) she has a full year left on her visa - issued in January - so its going to be a very expensive few months. Just wish they had thought through the implications before going down this route. I really wish I could help her more, but financially it just won't work. Especially with one of my own on the way, we just dont have spare cash to pay out. I figure that, either option, we obviously pay for her flight home and if she wants to go now, then we give her a months salary as a good will gesture. If she stays till 6 months, then we pay for her scans and doctors visits. Her choice - I think that's fair, but still reeling from the news, so my view might be a bit tainted

Just moved into Al Barsha 1 and loving it. Used to live in the Lakes - liked that too, but the prices just got ridiculous, so decided to quit fighting with the landlord and find somewhere else. Great transport links, close to the shops, big villa in a lovely compound. Only possible place i'd move to would be a stand alone villa in Umm Sequim or Jumeriah - would like to live closer to the beach, but the prices make that unrealistic :)

It should be part of your maternity policy - but at my company, the policy states that you are entitled to 2 x 30 minute breaks to allow you to continue to breastfeed. This is for 18 months from the birth of your wee one. Some companies allow you to put the two breaks together and leave an hour early, but you would typically have to talk to HR/your boss to get this signed off

Not sure if it was the way it was supposed to happen, but I have used both my UK and UAE licenses within months of each other - UK license in the UK for Car hire and UAE one here for everything else, so don't think your son will have an issue once he is back in the UK

I am guessing it is way too late to help at all - but if you didn't move on time, and need a good quoting company then intlmovers.com are quite good, and I found my moving company that way.

Thanks for all the replies I think we did exactly what you said not to do and rushed in. We have got a villa in The Lakes which is lovely, but it doesn't have maid accommodation so getting in part time agency staff to help. The issue I am having is finding a baby sitter. It's not as easy as I was led to believe (relocation company said there were lots of agencies that do it) but finding one is proving a trial. This is going to make it hard to have the social life my hubby was planning :( So much for fore thought and planning.... edited by Liz.mcgowan on 26/12/2011

Hi. I have just moved to Dubai and we are living in the lakes. No live in accommodation for maids, so I am getting part time help, but they only work during the day and I really need someone reliable for night babysitting. Any suggestions agency or otherwise. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks for all your replies - sorry it has taken me so long to get back online. My DH is going to be working in the Internet city, and we get what I think is a generous housing allowance - hubby assures me we could get a three bed apartment in Jumeriah beach or the Marina. I was talking to a flight attendant about shopping, and I realise they are on a limited budget and also have the ease to fly around Europe, but I was worried it was a bad sign of things to come. I feel much better about it now - thank you I will have to take a trawl through the posts to see areas etc - I am guessing that no matter where we live, I need to get my international drivers license and sort out a car ASAP, although I will need to wait for my boxes from the uk as they will have my DS's car seat in them. Taxi's will just have to do until they arrive I am starting to get excited about the move now that it is all seeming a little more real. Thanks again for your replies. I think I will go and look through the rest of the forum now
