You should ask how many people are on that waitlist and then you should have some idea on how to hedge your bets. If there is less than 10 on the list I would add my name but if there is say 20 then a whole class would have to drop out before you would get a look in.

The 10 days grace is not black and white and as someone has already mentioned it really does depend on who you get on the day.

Have to say she is being upfront with you. Nevertheless if you shell out for her visa you will end up losing out cause you don't get that the money you spent on processing her visa except for your deposit. Best to start afresh and get someone who is happy to sign a one year contract.

GEMS have tiers within their organization, so they have the "Premier" schools like GEMS world academy, Wellington International School, and then they have the budget schools like Winchester.... the budget schools are definitely budget in terms of quality and the premier schools are generally that, premier... Gems World Academy is in a league of its own - and they have the schools fees to go with it as well. Believe it or not they are full for Pre KG!

Your cheapest option is to drive across the border to Hatta. You need to double check on two things though (i) not all car insurances cover non UAE drivers and I am assuming that you are driving on your UK licence. (ii) not all car insurances cover Oman. Expensive Option but quickest is to go down to DNATA travel centre on SZR and there is an immigration office in there. Take your passport pay 650AED and they will stamp it for you for another 30 days. I have to disagree with VP it is not written in black and white that you get 10 days grace period after your 30 days are up it all depends who gets to see your passport, whether they are in a good mood etc. This is one of those UAE gray areas.

Yes it is legal to sponsor a maid and have her live out. My two previous nannies both lived out. I paid her accommodation and transport costs to work. I would be completely honest when giving a reference out. It may save her next employer alot of stress. If they decide to take her at least they will know what she is like.

Darling3, I know what your going through. I find it hard to speak to anyone except by brother and sisters. My mum can't even speak to me about it. My father was diagnosed with colon cancer last Summer. He had an operation and we were told he was in remission. It didn't last long. At the beginning of January this year his symptoms were back. He is undergoing chemo and radiotherapy as we speak. No matter how hard I try I can't think positively cause my dad has had enough. I have good days and bad days. I'm just counting the days til I can get on that plane to see him. I feel guilty cause I didn't go home at Christmas when he was still in remission. xxx

DD was 2 and a half last summer when she went to stay with MIL for 8 days with DH. I missed her loads but DD seemed happy enough with just DH being there. She didn't really take to MIL but I think thats cause granny was trying just a touch too hard with her. Prior to that DH only really did the nice, fun things with DD. DH now appreciates its not easy being on your own with DD 24/7!

Best way is to deduct it from source! On a more serious note have you actually said that next time you break and/or damage something you will deduct it from her wages? If she is not expecting it might come as a shock to her. I would take the softly softly approach and speak to her again and say next time you do it I WILL deduct money from your salary.

I think this has kinda of blown out of proportion and I kinda understand where P is coming from. I have a maid, do I consider her as family and the answer is NO. Yes she helps me but she is employed to help me, would I leave her stranded and the answer is NO not because DH is her sponsor but because as a human being I wouldn't leave her but my first responsibility would be to get my 3 year old out safely. When push comes to shove you never know how you may react to situations. When I was younger on my way to work I was on top of a double decker bus going down Whitehall when a motar bomb landed in Downing Street. The bus screeched to halt and people where pushing and shoving, being trampled upon just to get off the bus. I was 19 at that time and one of those being trampled upon. One kindly lady picked me up and dragged me down the stairs of the bus to safety. What I'm trying to say is that none of us can know what we will do until it happens. x

You can apply on line for a final bill. You just put in the date you are vacating the property. The day after just go to DEWA and pay the final bill and give to the landlord. We didn't get our deposit back as they deducted it from our final bill. I took all paperwork with me ie., receipt for the deposit but they never even asked to see it. If in doubt take everything.

My experience is: Investigate everything, apply everywhere, agonize about which curriculum... And in the end you have to settle for where ever you get a space! Schools are full - so much for Dubai running on empty! My DD is 2years old now. Should I start applying on a prior basis, considering schools are full? You might have already left it a bit late for FS1 2012 or even FS2 2013. Seriously I had DD down when she was 13 months old for Kings Dubai and she still didn't get an assessment for FS1 September 2011. In Dubai you need to have your child down before they are even conceived.! Anyway that's my personal view for what it is worth.

DH and I went to Cyprus for a long weekend when DD was 18 months old. The first day I felt really guilty and couldn't relax but the feeling soon goes away. I left DD with my sister and her family so I knew she was in good hands and having lots of fun with her cousins around. If you have the offer of help go and just do it. We all need a break at times.

Not sure whether the job market has stabilised but there is a slight improvement. You don't hear people getting made redundant as much as you do before. DH has now managed to get a job back in Dubai. His been in Doha for the last six months working.

Hi, just wanted to add you really need to see these nurseries for yourself. What may be good for one family is not necessarily good for another family. My DD goes to Blossom too but if you do a search on old Threads, Blossom has had a bit of a bashing in the past. What is important is that you are happy with the nursery in the first instance. DD loves being at Blossom but at times their management decision is enough to make me see red!

It is so personal...I am not a fan of Dr Rita at Healthbay, but you may like her. I really like Dr sean Petherbridge at Infinity health clinic...he is not a pediatrician though, but a family Doc...we all go to him. I second Sean Petherbridge at Infinity Health as well. Dr Louster is the best he is the main peadritician there. Don't go to the lady peadtrician cause I didn't think much of her.

Thanks for all the suggestions! We have Du, and I'm trying to connect my iMacs and my macbook pro, as well as occasionally dh's Dell laptop...I didn't get any info from Du regarding my IP, subnet mask, gateway, etc - so I guess I'll try to give them a call...they haven't been very helpful so far though! Maybe I will try an Airport Express to see if that helps! Not sure why I didn't go that route the first time, since I'm a total mac girl! Thanks! I'll try it all and see where I get! edited by CdnExpat on 16/02/2011 Bearing in mind you have an Imac, you should get something from Apple. We are a family of "Apple Macs" so we have one of the time capsules things which can be used as a wireless as well. Just plus into the socket and everything connects and we are on DU. Du doesn't support wireless routers so they are no help at all. Istyle in IBM are pretty good in answering questions.

As the others have said, the doctors we seem to go to don't have direct billing with BUPA International and I when I remember fill in the form, send it to the UK. Have to say they have always paid up pretty quickly with no questions asked. I was thinking about changing from Bupa because of the direct billing but they said that in Dubai they issue everyone with a card from Oman Insurance. I never received the card last year but apparently I will this year! Costly calling the UK but the Customer Service is very efficient when you have any problems.

We got our mum's travel insurance from the post office. It is quite expensive. My mother suffers from everything under the sun and so carries alot of medication with her. Before she came out here we got a letter from the doctor saying what medication was etc just in case she was stopped at the airport with a vanity case full of pills. Just make sure the travel insurance she gets covers her for death abroad.

If you want a Villa you could try having a look at Springs, Meadows, Lakes, Arabian Ranches or Green Community. For an apartment Jemeriah Beach Residence, Marina area. How old is your DD? Have a look a Motorcity, its slightly out of the way but loads of kids running around.

Either Green Community which is fab for kids - traffic is a bit of a nightmare or Palm Jumeriah (villa) beach on your door step, no traffic problems and easy reach to everywhere. Lots of kids around if you pick the right Frond to live on.

Springs, Lakes, Meadows are all not very far from DIP. You should maybe also look at Arabian Ranches. Personally I think the Green Community is an amazing place for kids. If your not planning to drive much then the massive aroundabout won't really bother you that much.
