Hi, as other's have said, it is not true that Bands can only work for Hotels, Bars, etc. There are however, noise regulations for private parties, so the band will have to stop playing at a reasonably early hour, depending on your location and neighbors tolerance, 11 or 12pm. My husband plays drums with several configurations of musicians, all different types of music to suit your needs and has played Hotels (for example the Address, Armani) Bars, (Double Decker, Fibber McGee's), and private parties. You can contact me at alreadybecky at gmail dot com if you would like more info.

There is a shop in Festival City, upstairs from Ikea, can't remember the name, but a linen type store, that sells American sheet sets. Fairly good thread counts, in the 400's if I remember correctly, maybe some in the 600's. Of course more expensive than you would pay for the same thing in US, but if you have to buy it here, there you go.

There is a very nice used bookstore in the Ace hardware store in festival city. Not sure about pop up books etc. You could call Ace and get the number of the bookstore and ask about selection.

Loube, you hit the nail on the head with all your comments and questions! Exactly what I have been struggling to figure out before I make a rash or unwise decision. There are pro's and con's...and I can't quite decide which is stronger for me yet...Thanks for your very calm and straightforward reply.

Lifestyle over pay is an expression, I would still be paying above the monthly salary that many maids here receive. I would not be comfortable having someone work for me making less than acceptable wages. I realize there is always the risk that any maid with "free time" could go outside the agreed upon guidelines, but if I trust my home with this person, I should trust HER in general in my thinking. She is having her current sponsor cancel her visa at her contract renewal time in answer to transferring question. I have met her several times and had talked about hiring a maid at some point in order to be able to get a dog. I think that is why she felt comfortable approaching me.

Thanks, that's what I wanted to know. And yes, that's what I was asking. I am not going to take out an expensive insurance policy. This woman has approached me, knowing me though a friend of mine and her helper, and asked to work for me. I have been very clear that in fact I really don't need a maid, and can't justify having one at a high salary, (no kids, I freelance work, my own hours when I want to) and have a cleaner come one day a week now. I have encouraged her to consider working for another family with kids ( she does not like her sponsor now and her contract is ending) that would pay more than I am willing to...but she is insistent that she wants to work for me. I want to help her, but it has to work for both of us. She will have very light duties with me and lots of free time, but she is choosing quality of life over money. I have done that myself in the past....worked for someone self-employed who did not offer health insurance, but I had lots of time off, and a great working environment. I will of course still pay a fair salary, but not on the high range of things. This forum makes me feel like I have to explain myself!! :-)

I had read about insurance, but my question is about my actual responsibility.....I will be a very good employer, but I am not adopting her.....so I am concerned about my actual responsibility for the time this person is in my employ?

I searched and cannot find anything relating to this...I am considering sponsoring a helper, and one question my husband has is what happens if God forbid, she comes down with a serious illness, or gets pregnant? (Her husband is in Dubai) I understand we are responsible for her healthcare, but I am assuming that means "routine"? I don't want to reassure my husband that surely if she were to fall seriously ill that we would not be responsible ( meaning she would go back to Philippines to be with her family) if indeed we would be responsible for say, Cancer treatments. Sorry, my husband is a financial guy, and his job is too be fiscally responsible, so he brings his work into our home as well! :-) Thanks....this decision is a hard one!

I have a Maytag dryer, it does not have to vented, it gets the clothes fluffy and "almost" dry in 30 minutes to an hour depending on type and size of load. It's nowhere near the quality of US dryers, but I wouldn't be without it!
