My DH is also intent on getting a Pajero, or a Prado next year. Patrol would also be a good choice, or the FJ, as mentioned. Like others have said, they have good resale value and the A/C works quite well. There is a definite reason they are so popular. No heated debate in this house though, he is paying for it--he can get a purple spaceship for all I care.

I had this in the UK with an ex boss. I had caught chicken pox at the age of 21 from my darling Nephew and my boss wanted me to stand outside his place of work so he could see that i was telling the truth! Covered in scabs. oh nice! Because that's such a common thing for 21 year olds--lol--how could you "fake" chicken pox?? I handed in the aforementioned sick note along with my resig notice and told this last one to get bent!

yep, thanks louise lol. hmm, it's got matrimonials, too. love reading those! TDB, our du service was acting psycho last week. A couple of days in a row for no reason, then it corrected itself. My DH was on skype, and I was on facebook, clicked on a video a friend put up, and it totally screwed up his call. He kicked me off my laptop, and plugged the ethernet cord in to finish his convos. Only rarely do we get spotty service. But after reading HCTS's advice, that's def a better alternative! Man is she resourceful! :)

You know, the whole sick note thing is understandable, to avoid people calling in for hangovers, or on holidays--I get that. But earlier this year, I had a boss who was already angry with me for "not thinking of his business first" (how dare I come down with acute bronchitis, what was I thinking!?) but then to add insult, I go to the doctor only to find out a sick note costs 80 dhs! Why am I paying for a sick note after you have just diagnosed me with acute bronchitis and out me on two types of meds? I'm just not used to that.

You're very welcome :) A mighty fine weekend to you, too! On your yogurt combo, yum. If you love it, don't give it up, unless you reel in those weekends and you're still not budging. Then just love it a couple times a week ;) Hummus...love it love it. Not too bad nutritionally, but who knows what the deli or restaurant throws in there. If you make your own, then you can figure out the macro breakdown and add it into your daily intake. I don't know if I deserve your compliments, but thanks, that's very sweet!! edited by Beebers on 06/12/2012

Okay, that is helpful to know. At least your clothes are looser, so you know something is happening. Be happy about that :) Sleep is SO important. I had a client once that was sleeping 5 hours a night, and we took her cardio away for 2 weeks so she could sleep in, and she lost almost 2 kgs. Sleep is when you release GH and get rid of cortisol--nasty stress that makes your body hold on to fat. Do what you can to get more, even if it means less exercise until you get in a good groove. I have gone back and forth on fruit. I call it the dieter's Brutus. Regarding food combining, it is best eaten alone. (that whole fast fermenting thing). When you eat fruit, eat it as a snack, alone, or 15 minutes before a meal so it can do its job. I like apples because they are lower in sugar, and high in fiber, but I also eat bananas sometimes, too. On a day where I exercise, I usually eat fruit as I utilize simple sugars better. Sounds like your choice of fats is good. I like to eat my fats with protein and veggies, and usually, in the late part of the day, in place of carbs in a meal. Most of us don't do anything at night which requires energy, therefore, don't require carbs. On wheatabix cereal--I am kind of against any boxed cereals except the hot: oats, oat bran, wheat bran. I love these though, and sounds like you don't! For the past 2 months, I have been eating the Norlander bread from Carrefour's bakery. I either have 2 slices with eggs in the a.m. or make a sandwich with this for lunch. Modern Bakery also likes a blue label bread called "evening bread." I have never done well with bread, but this has not affected my weight loss this year one iota. So maybe try one of these instead of the boxed cereal/hot cereals? Regarding crunch. I hear ya! Check the label on your whole grain crackers, and look if there is any soybean oil, or other oils/ingredients you wouldn't want to eat. If they taste really good, there is probably a reason. Love the Wasa Fiber crackers. I leave myself enough caloric/carb room for 2 each day if I want them. They are kind of bland, so sometimes I drizzle a little EVOO and chili or pink salt on them. Or, I have a pickle instead. Crunchy enough! With the cottage cheese/greek yogurt--I don't think it's a big deal, but maybe you don't do well with dairy. I would worry more about your weekends or cereal, because the cottage cheese/yogurt are whole foods. I really like the Fage brand 100% fat free Greek Yogurt. If I am bored with the flavor, sometimes I add cocoa powder or strawberry flavored whey protein powder to it, because I am not a fan of combining actual fruit with dairy. Note: oxalic acid can interfere with mineral absorption, so adding cocoa to a dairy product can limit the calcium you get out of it. Weekends, try eating ONE naughty meal, and not making it one naughty day. I actually found when I first started my weight loss plan this year, that spreading my cheat meals out about once every 5 days was much less devastating to my diet than cheating thurs/fri. This way I had a metabolic swing of fat loss working in my favor, and when I did cheat, I just helped my metabolism along further instead of incurring overspill. I also found that if I was going to drink, I wouldn't do it the same night I had a big cheat meal. Either/or. One last note on cheats, if you crave burgers, buy the stuff you need to make it at home. It's much cleaner! (try and tell me to go cook, instead of ordering Burger Fuel after a few pints, though, not happening! lol) Hope this helps, it sounds like you have the right idea :) And these are just suggestions until you really get in fat loss mode. Hang in there. I was much more militant in June when I began, and now, I am at the point where my metabolism can tolerate a lot more flexibility in my eating plan. Like you saw, I was not doing too well in Nov. with my eye and the other issues. I literally only exercised 3 times that month, and I ate whatever, literally. Still controlled portions, but ate more takeout than I would advocate anyone doing. I was alone, and couldn't leave the house most days. And in that month? Didn't gain 1 ounce. Nothing. So you will get there! edited by Beebers on 06/12/2012

kates, I know what you are talking about. The type of ointment is indeed called Emulsifying Ointment BP--and a few different companies make one. I know Kenkay, and Pinewood make one. Maybe this is something that you could get at Boots? I can sympathize as I have it on my shins and shoulders; luckily Dermovate keeps mine at bay. I used to use the greasy formula, then switched to the more cream-like one. It's cheap, so using it over the whole area is what I prefer to creams. Also, you may already be doing this, but a 25mg Atarax each night for a few days or a week will totally knock out what Dermovate doesn't. In case you can't find the BP ointment.

Becky, I can understand why you're looking for help, because there is so much conflicting info on the internet, in the books stores, everywhere. I can give you better insight if I know a little more. 1. Are our clothes any looser? 2. How long have you had this extra weight, and approximately how much extra do you carry? (the less fat you have to lose, the harder your body wants to hold onto it) 3. If you had to guess, do your calories vary wildly by the day? 4. When you say clean eating, this means different things to different people. Which fruits do you eat, and how much? What kind of carbs do you eat? Which fats? 5. Are you experiencing any other positives such as improved sleep, clearer/brighter skin, more energy? You may be on the right track and need to just keep on trucking and be patient, or maybe you do need to tweak some things. What is never a good idea, though, is to drastically drop calories or increase exercise. Especially since you've just started that. ETA: one more thing, and I hope this doesn't sound bossy, but when you say you are trying to eat as clean as possible, does this mean a few of your meals are "good" but then 3-4 times a week, for dinner, you order takeout from Wagamama or have some mojitos? Sometimes those are the killers, and it takes really consistent clean eating for months before you can "cheat" more than once a week and still make progress. edited by Beebers on 06/12/2012

So I went to the spice souk and it was AMAZING. I found Alum in the first shop I went into and got it for a great price. I was also trying to find Walnut Husk Powder and Raw Carob but nobody had it or seemingly ever heard of it. Any ideas where this can be found locally? oh cool, glad you found it :) Never seen the Walnut Husk powder, but almost positive I have seen raw carob pellets at the Dubai Mall Organics location, in the bulk section. Maybe it's on the shelves, too? The items in the bulk section alternate each time I go.

There have been some big events we have had to miss. My DH's schedule can be crazy, sometimes he is off on a plane with 24 hours notice. Our family and friends back home understand that this is the way our life will be for a while. Even our friends here know we can't always promise attendance until the "week of." To quote Dr. Seuss--I think--those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind :)

for those who don't want to waste their money on spa treatments that do not work, Here are some tips. Honestly, you can't exercise away flabby arms, just thought I would say that. But--lifting weights will shape the arms, and besides working out triceps and biceps, shoulder development is quite important. Overall body fat loss is what's necessary, though, to see that sculpting. This is achieved through clean eating, consistently, over time. If too much cardio is done, you will simply be a smaller version of yourself, with smaller, but still flabby, arms. HTH

Table 9, Asado, One O One, Hakkasan, Zenghes tick lots of boxes for me. Atmoshphere is fantastic for guests. Certos is great for Italian (best I've tried in Dubai). I thought Bussola was disappointing downstairs but agree that the pizzas are great. Have you tried Certo's brunch? Been quite tempted by that! Will try it out. For Italian, we actually liked Bice a lot. A little overpriced, though, IMO. Stefano's on the Walk, believe it or not, had excellent ravioli; I figure if they can do that right, perhaps the rest is pretty good.

@ Di, :) I would totally laugh at that except I am miffed on your behalf, still! ugh! TDB, I am trying to find the link, the idea is, when the magnetic pole switches (this is an actual phenomenon, of course, but being thrown into the doomsday scenario, Nibiru, Planet X, yada ya) this device inflates, you climb in, seal yourself up with I suppose some water, snacks, and a makeshift toilet, and simply "walk/roll" yourself out into the rising sea levels, and wait...for however long.

That's a scam, and the 2012 doomsday calender thing has been explained by experts as a misinterpretation of the Mayan calender and is not at all valid from any perspective. It's hard, Maroon. Follow the gut. Go with what you see, and hear--and don't make excuses for anyone's behavior. In other words=facts. Which is easier said then done, naturally! Unless this is Johnny Depp. Then, follow him around like a puppy, believe whatever he tells you, you get the idea ;)

DH and I are also having an "austerity Christmas" as we will have a newborn and he's only just started a new job so we're trying to save. It's nice to have lots of little things to open so I've bought him a couple of thoughtful books, an aftershave, a few bits of clothing and then little bits like a bag of Percy p*** I've saved from a trip to the UK, some bukhour for his car (he loves that stuff!) and a nice key ring. I was actually thinking of putting a bow on the baby as well looool! Or you could put a bow somewhere else...sorry couldn't resist! Naughty Beebers! Love the "Austerity Christmas" ha!

For point 6, is it a copy of the title deed or actual? (or anyone else who knows) tia

Oh no, did I just burst your bubble? Sawwy! haha! you know, I could be warming up my car for a half hour, chiseling ice off my windshield at 5 am or shoveling my driveway. Doesn't that sound dreamy? Instead, I find myself here, crabbing about traffic (which, really, is nothing!!!!), or the occasional expat-related gripe. But in reality, unless I am bored off my duff, I rarely complain about this place. In fact, sitting here sipping my fresh coconut, I'm pretty happy!

Kezzler, I totally understand where you guys are coming from re: wanting to get little gifts. My DH and I usually do small gifts at Christmas, because we each have a "Santa sack" and like to fill it up, sneaking a gift in each other's every other day. I want to say I got them for quite cheap at Artikel last year, less than 20 dhs each. It reminds me of childhood :) Like you two, we go out for dinner often enough, so the sacks are for little, or somewhat cheesy gifts. His Santa sack, last year, had things like art deco cuff links I got at the gold souk for 30 dhs, socks--because otherwise he'd never buy any!, a small vial of local oud, an ornament with a camel on it, an 80's hair band CD, and this might seem ridiculous--but a can of pea soup he loves which is impossible to find in Dubai. He got me a Justin Bieber t shirt, fuzzy socks, hand made beaded bracelets, some Daiso items I needed for the kitchen, and things like that. We love our little goofy tradition, and since we spend more money on anniversary, Valentine's Day, or even Christmas gifts for family, this works for us. The gifts are small but are indicative of how well we understand each other :)

This sounds like a familiar story that doesn't end well. You've only been seeing him a few months...are you sure you know the full story regarding their breakup? Maybe he left it open ended and just said he wanted space? Is it possible he HASN"T said, in any uncertain terms, go away for good? If that's not true at all, then you have a certified psycho on your hands, which is probably worse. If it were me (and to an extent, it has been me) I would not be around my "boyfriend" until he could sort it out. I wouldn't subject myself to that drama, for a guy I was dating a few months that I was not married to, or had no children with. You must value your time and energy more than that??

Zah, as far as I have heard, it is for ANY illegal resident, from ANY nationality in UAE. I met a British man who has overstayed by 3 months, and he is taking advantage of the opportunity to leave without fines. You can call 8005111 for more information; the locations of the residency and foreign affairs offices who are helping people during this process will be announced "soon" but don't know when "soon" is. Apparently today is the first day of the amnesty period, so hopefully the locations will be indeed announced shortly.
