Thanks Daza. Yes--$15,000 USD per year. I am assuming it's a fiscal year, not calendar. I have a feeling it's better to get a plan that includes maternity just in case that's in our forecast, since there is at least a 10 month waiting period, once insured, to qualify for maternity.

Update. I feel almost back to normal. I'm itching to go for a run, but I don't want to be daft. I'll give it another week. In case anyone is in the same boat as me--needing insurance and not knowing where to start--I just have to say that within hours of emailing Pacific Prime, I got a phone call from one of their agents. After about a 10 minute conversation, he sent me quotes from 6 different companies, within 30 minutes, no less. The rates are not near as bad as I had feared, and I like that I can just select an inpatient plan. Should be able to get this sorted pretty quickly and get checked out :) And if anyone can tell me if $15,000 in coverage in "routine maternity" would get me very far, please advise. :) edited by Beebers on 01/12/2012

Am looking down at the road that runs in front of JBR. Wow. You can see oil on the road which never gets washed away. I can only imagine how slick the roads are. Everyone stay safe! I will be enjoying the rain from my window seat, nice and safely!!!

Hi Tattie, I haven't started the visa process yet--all that begins Tuesday. I have the #s for Pacific Prime and Nasco, which I think is a good idea since they could probably point me in the right direction. I wasn't concerned as I began to feel better and thought, well, I know my body, and if I had an abcessed appendix or this was more than scar tissue being jarred and causing pain, (which has been the case before) I would know, right? I was hoping I could get some form of traveler's insurance (b/c I am on a visit visa) and get into see a doc in the next week or so, after it's valid. If I go to a hospital now, even if it's Rashid or Iranian, although I might not pay out the nose, I might get a diagnosis, and therefore, have something "pre-existing" when I apply for a long-term insurance plan with my resident visa. I am not trying to be one of those whining posters who complains and then poo-poos everyone's suggestions--just trying to be logical since my gut instinct is that I am not in dire straits, and find the best route to get insured quickly. edited by Beebers on 30/11/2012

Thanks everyone for checking in. I really thought I was fine since the menstrual-type cramping subsided, I have no fever or loss of appetite, and nothing is painful to the touch. I can definitely rule out an ectopic pregnancy. However, I am not a physician, and the thought that this could be appendicitis is starting to freak me out. My GI tract is behaving as if I have a "bug" ever since I had these horrible pains Monday night. (without going into too much detail). Rest has not helped that. So now I am scouring the internet trying to see if I could get any form of insurance TODAY before going to a hospital, in case any kind of procedure or surgery would be required. If I could even pull this off by Monday that would be great, although I hate to hold off. I made the mistake of telling my Mom about this when we spoke yesterday, and was reminded that she had endometriosis and diverticulitis for years, and maybe I have the same, "don't overreact, maybe that's all it is" :\: ETA: I don't know if I am stupid for even thinking I can get insurance quickly, and then be at the doctor within a week and not have my claim turned down. :( It would just be kind of obvious wouldn't it? edited by Beebers on 30/11/2012

Thank you Shopgirl :) x Mashkara, right--I guess I have that in my favor! I wish I could send someone the bill sometimes...lol...My DH *is* self employed, so no break there. I am actually trying to sort out insurance for the two of us along with visas and everything. We are literally at square one with all of this. Maybe I could just start with Axa for now for myself, so I can get things sorted without putting it off for very long.

TDB--you're not a nag! I know I shouldn't be without it! Had it until March this yr, and got a new job this summer so was in the process of getting it again. Alas the new job went south (doors closed one day, no one got paid, etc). Since my DH and I have decided we will both stay here (as opposed to operating out of Africa) I am sorting all these things out. I am calling Axa in a minute--and meanwhile sorting thru all the other issues we have going on. So many things need to happen simultaneously! ergh!!! x

Mashkara, I am glad you mentioned Axa. Since I left my job earlier this year, I am now in the process of sorting my visa through my DH's free zone company, and I need to get insurance quotes among a ton of other things. Finding new apt., finding a vehicle, setting up new office, etc. Merry Christmas! But really, I just began searching insurance threads on here and it looks like a huge undertaking. So I will start with Axa as who knows what I could have going on and what it could cost to diagnose a/o fix. I hope you have recovered from your surgery, goodness! Do you personally go through Axa? When you applied, did you have a pre-existing condition and if so, was it not covered did the coverage simply cost more? I have never been diagnosed with a specific condition, so I think I may be lucky in not having something pre-existing. But I guess the insurance agency will determine that.

Hi ladies, sorry I disappeared from the thread--internet went wonky last night. Thanks for all the input! Tattie, I am SO much better today. When I had entered my symptoms on WebMD yesterday, endometriosis, apendicitis, or a parasite (!?) were the possibilities the database came up with. That's why I wasn't taking Brufen or Tylenol, because I wanted to assess the pain and make sure I wasn't ignoring an emergency. Since my cramps and pain have completely gone and I have no fever or other symptoms, I think I am going to take a little more time to find a doctor who I can see for a full gyne checkup and get follow-up care with; it's been a year anyway, so I am due for that. I am a bit of a train wreck in that area since my car accident (scar tissue, adhesions, blocked fallopian tube, etc) so I am trying to get my medical records and pictures from the laproscopy I had done in 2002 so my gyne here will know what they are dealing with. What stinks, is most of the time when women have random pelvic pain and there is a possibility of endo, they need to do exploratory surgery to know for sure. I really appreciate each of your suggestions. If anything changes today, I will definitely go to Latifa hospital. Hopefully I'll keep feeling this good!

Thanks Tattie, I will definitely check out that link. The pain is more aggravating than unbearable. Reminds me of a horrific cycle or onset of first pains of labor, except it is constant. I may just go back to the Iranian, as I know when they refer you based on symptoms to a gyne--it's quite cheap, and I think my sonogram was 5 dhs or something crazy like that. I've been staying away from anti-inflammatorys because I wanted to make sure I was aware if the pain worsened...I would rush myself in. Thanks again for your replies

Hi ladies, thanks for your replies. Tattie, I have no gov't health card nor any type of insurance, so it would be a cash deal. I am pretty sure it's not run-of-the-mill ovulation pains. My DH and I were, er, playing scrabble. So it was a cause and effect thing, and I've no history of ovulation pain :( If that was it, I would be happy, trust me! Is Latifa cheaper, like the Iranian? I went to Iranian hospital 2 yrs ago, and paid next to nothing for emergency treatment. I thought of going there--but the gynae I saw then was....less than satisfactory in bedside manner :( Daza, I would pretty much be open to anywhere. I'm in the marina, but I would rather pay for a 70 dh taxi ride each way than an extra 2000 dhs in medical bills!

Are you kidding me?!?! Haha the limit at my company for dinners is $125!! Dead serious. My DH was like, 'if these guys wanted my business--he should have taken my wife and I to an all you can eat Brazilian steakhouse' :D much more impressive. Especially embarrassing that my DH works with locals in villages where so many children and elderly die unnecessarily due to lack of basic needs. Of all places we live in Dubai--so we should be immune--but that kind of spending is not impressive. More like sickening.

Be sure LL isn't able to squirm his/her way out of returning that security deposit back. As sad as this sounds, I have almost never gotten a deposit back. Always, they will find a reason. It was 3000 dhs, 2 years ago (we didn't pay one last year when we renewed) so although it would be nice to get it back, I won't be heartbroken if we don't. Ecochic--we had gotten all of those the first lease we signed, but didn't think to ask the next year when we resigned. I think the only issue is that the LL owes the community fees... SEY, you said: [b'>My guess is that the developr will not give the owner a title deed with outstanding service fees. Without a title deed it will mean that you as the tenant cannot register your contract with RERA which means your contract basically is worth nothing if it's not Ejari.[/b'> does this mean his title deed can be revoked for outstanding fees? I will make sure wherever we go that we get everything in order! And a statement that the fees are paid, like ecochic said

That's good news SEY :) It makes it difficult when you are spoiled with an awesome view. Almost our entire unit is windows, all looking out to the Palm and part of the marina--uninterrupted. Makes other units seem drab. ET does sound really nice, and looks like lots of retail, spas, and restaurants are popping up, so that's good! I'm sure you'll adjust to the new place. Any place where the LL has his **** together is a blessing these days, apparently!!

You definitely need to get out as soon as your contract expires and then thank your lucky stars you weren't one of the unfortunate ones. In fact, I'd report this to RERA as they're very interested in investigating suspicious activity like this at the moment. I agree!! We should never have renewed last year! thanks for all of your advice, too!

Would the cinema staff take any action if they were informed? Here? Dubious. Back home there was almost always an usher, or security staff member, who would approach those with cell phones ringing, people who put their feet on the seats in front of them, those who got rowdy...in fact it was like that for as long as I can remember :) My friends and I got reprimanded as youngsters when we went to see Dick Tracy and were being noisy--that was 22 years ago! lol

Thank you SO much. Forgot to mention the first warning sign--6 months ago "Hi, would you like to renew now? One check, and big savings if you do?" er...not quite yet?? A title deed never came up. I will consider myself lucky based on how ignorant I am on these matters. Sorry you are having a tough time with your search. In which area are you looking? 60 days just doesn't seem like enough time, to me, to find a new place. But if I started looking earlier, it was almost too early. I need to focus on the big issues, instead I have been concerned with "Will they rip the street up?" "Are they building a stadium next door with flashing lights going on all night?" "Will this new mosque cause a traffic jam every day?" These are all current issues for me in this flat. I feel like my kitchen is a disco at night--almost tempted to install a pole :\: I know some people don't like the Marina, but we need to be close to my DH's office and we enjoy being around all the hotels and the beach. It's getting to be like NYC with all the construction and such, though, and that's something I don't miss!

SEY, I am really glad you brought this up! Honestly, the whole thing is just dodgy--the outstanding fees being unpaid would not make me comfortable. It's not right. Seems he has no intention of paying them, and claimed is is suing the developer for millions--that was the reason I was given when I voiced concern because the developer's agents visited our house multiple times this year. Apparently they couldn't reach our landlord. With over 700 units in our price range in this neighborhood--I think it is obvious we need to move. It won't be a big chore--not much to pack up, and done it a zillion times :)

I have made this one in the past and it is not bad: 200ml extra virgin olive oil 4 tablespoons soya milk or soya cream 2 garlic cloves crushed 1 teaspoon dijon mustard 1 tablespon red wine vinegar 1/2 teaspoon salt fresh ground black pepper put all ingredients in deep measuring jug and whiz with a stick blender until thick and creamy or put in a blender or food processor and whiz for a few seconds. It is thick and tastes quite good and keeps in fridge for upto a month. I have another one that only uses 2 tablespoons of olive oil but I have never tried that one. This looks better than the dud I made last time. I would be willing to try that. Is it thick with the milk, too, or would you say to get the cream? Never have seen that, would i go to Organics Cafe, or could it be found at Waitrose or the like?

Sorry HCTS I skimmed your handle and got it wrong, wasn't calling you or your suggestion "Hairy" :) Well, the plot thickens...I had emailed to give notice 2 days ago, and the solicitor came back asking if it was a matter of money only. I didn't want to get into it about the outstanding fees being a major issue for us, so I told him I actually needed to spend 5K less than what I am paying now, budget has changed and sorry, but thanks for asking. Now he's come back that he thinks he can convince the LL to do that--lower rent by 5K instead of raise it by 15K. !? My, that was quick! This could mean that they know they will have an issue letting it with these fees :/ Honestly, if they lowered our rent by 5K it would be under the market rate. Then again, they won't lose any rent by having it on the market for who knows how long.

Okay the viewing thing is not exciting me after reading what I've read. eek! I would have to wonder what kind of people would be viewing this unit when it is going to be 20K dhs more a year than others in the same complex with the same floor plan! Hope the poor sould will have done their research, too, as the LL has not paid overdue service fees which total 1/3 the cost of the rent. It's not a small amount! That being said, I don't guess a reputable agency would show a unit with outstanding fees, would they? Would they even know in the first place if that was the case? Hairy, thanks for the idea about switching the internal. Might just do that, although if someone had a key to the front, wouldn't they have that key also?

Changing your locks is super cheap Beebers. You can get very cheap standard locks and keys for 50 odd dirhams, or you can get the more secure type for 300 odd dirhams. It's a job that you can easily do yourself. Even my DIY useless DH is able to change the locks and that is saying a lot! :) Well good to hear! Between the two of us, we're nearly half a handyman! If it's that cheap, I have no qualms about doing that so I don't have any extra stress the next 60 days. Finding a new place is going to be taxing enough. Okay, this makes me feel a little better. We have 3 sets of keys--don't think any agents have copies. But that was along the lines of my worry--this LL doesn't quite play by the book, and with us traveling between now and then, I think, gosh--could he just waltz in here to show it--or demand a showing when it's highly inconvenient? Nice one Beebers! :) It will be worth it, promise. The other thing I did I think 2 years back was for Xmas presents for my friends. I bought those bottles from Ikea with the flip top sealable lids. I then peeled the rind off 5 or 6 lemons per bottle and pushed it through the hole. I then poured in vodka and left to "steep" for 4 - 6 weeks shaking occasionally, leaving about 1 cup worth of space at the top. Then, I poured in simple syrup (I forget the quantity, about 3/4 cup) and mixed in. Voila - Limoncello Christmas gifts! It goes yellow as well! Best kept in freezer and poured into ice cold shot glasses. Yumm! Oh that's a fantastic idea! May have to buy in bulk! (not that I've that many friends lol) Thanks for the awesome idea! Wish I had 20 something lemons like last week!

How has your vocabulary changed since moving to Dubai. I love the mix of nationalities and how it has changed and added words to my vocabulary. I love how my children speak an international English and get funny looks when we are back home in Canada. So just for fun, what words have you adopted that you would normally not use back in your home country. garden - instead of back yard arvo - afternoon car park - parking lot just to name a few :) Your turn! Great post, love it :) Let's see. Thanks to my British friends... "knackered" instead of "wore out" "going to the loo" instead of "I'm going to the potty" (I've heard that means "batty" lol!) "indeed" instead of "you ain't lyin!" and from other various cultures--not really sure from whom... "Your location?" instead of "Where're you at?" "teekay, teekay" instead of "okay" "car park" instead of "parking garage" Sometimes I catch myself rolling my "r's" if it appears that would make my version of English easier to understand. It took me a long time to get used to my kiwi friend's accent, even my British friends' accents, but I never have issues with South Africans, Indians, or Filipinos. Go figure :) ETA: I sometimes ask my friend who is an exercise physiologist to "dumb things down" for me when we get into discussions :) I've also been asked that by friends/family that aren't familiar with techinical terms that are industry specific. it's really not a big deal edited by Beebers on 27/11/2012

Hi Beebers, Aloe does not cure anything it just puts the body into balance so it can start to heal itself and often symptoms disappear whilst using it. xx Maybe for some it balances, but for me--it did nothing. It's totally subjective. I have friends that swear by it--I am not denouncing it--just saying it did nothing for me to heal issues. (I had a severely compromised liver function, leaky gut, ulcers, among other things).

Keep up with the skin flake talk, I need to reduce my bread intake. If you could delve into how sugar and chocolate both contain skin flakes that'd be 'sweet'. haha! 90% of dust is dead skin cells, does that help? Or how about this--I think you are too young to be concerned with wrinkles, but if you put down sugar or carbs with simple sugars for a week, skin looks so much less inflamed and more plumped :)
