I tried drinking aloe vera. Introduced it into a nutrition plan that was calculated and therefore, measurable, with few variables. My conclusion? I did two months with the distilled version, and then two months subsequent to that, with the less processed version. None of my CBC's or hormone panels indicated that something otherworldy had taken place to improve my health, digestion, or anything of the like. It reminds me of when I trialed cider vinegar. For me, there were no adverse effects, nor and quantitative improvements. I think it is a purely individual experiment. Nothing bad to say about it--but a cure-all miracle fluid? not so much for me.

okay...obviously I am bored--or I wouldn't touch a thread like this with a 6 foot french baguette. But anyway...thankfully at least someone with sense has an enviable command of human physiology to have the know-how to inform the rest of us how disease is spread through the output of sudiferous glands. Brilliant, and an entertaining read. Because we all know that only those who have just come from the gym are quite filthy.

A Fine Balance- hands down the best book I've ever come across.yeah, that was a great read. Also by the same author: Family Matters. Loved The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand but haven't read her other works. Recently finished reading: Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok (I have a thing for Indian/ Chinese immigrant stories...), the Hunger Games trilogy. All four of these are intellectually undemanding yet enjoyable reads. I liked "Shantaram" but primarily because I've traveled to Mumbai with someone who loves the city as much as the author does. I had to stop reading at one pt, then come back to it, so I could read slowly and really digest what was happening. I just have to hope that the author wasn't doing a "Jean Sassoon" on his readers. Zadie Smith's "White Teeth" is excellent. Five Quarters of the Orange by Joanne Harris is well-written and enjoyable. Loved White Teeth and 5 Quarters is on my shelf waiting to be read, how funny. Zadie Smith's "On Beauty" is also pretty darn good. I need to read Fountainhead, and Anthem, but I would strongly suggest picking up Atlas Shrugged. It takes a bit to get into, but I have read it 6 times, and it is basically my life philosophy. It changes the way you think!

I can't offer much advice--we have always had the same itinerary for the holiday. Church in the morning--a beautiful Christmas service with a matinee starring the wee ones, and a special mini concert that my Mom coordinates. She's the lead organist/pianist and it is always magnificent. Followed by dinner, gifts, drinks for the adults, and the kids go play in the snow. It was like that for 30 years. Now our family Christmases have gotten completely fragmented due to several things, even before I moved over here. Since my parents are now the "Grandparents," family tradition would be that either my brother, my sister, or myself should be stepping up to the plate and hosting the family party. Well I'm here, my brother can't be bothered (rather my SIL) and my sister has to split her time between our folks and her DH's folks. So partly, I blame it on my siblings and myself for completely letting it fall apart. If I lived in the US, I would gladly do it. Half the family--especially the teenagers--can't be bothered to even get to the morning service to watch what my Mom spends months putting together. It's just sad. I don't care about the gifts. I miss being around my family and I am sad that for the last 30+ years, my parents went through such an ordeal to get everyone together, and no one is able to keep it going--not even my aunts and uncles. It's like if my parents don't host the party, nobody will bother. My thinking is that next year, since my Mom is retiring as the musical director, we will fly my folks out here so they can take a break and relax and say to **** with exhausting themselves trying to keep tradition going with no help from anyone else. Is that wrong?

The best part of pumpkin pie, to me, is making them the night before Thanksgiving holiday, and having just enough filling left over to make pumpkin pie mudslides in the morning--to take the edge off the entire family getting together under one roof. Forget the pumpkin lattes! :D

I didn't have any bridesmaids. But, in 1991-92 for my brother's and my sister's weddings--all the bridesmaids paid for their gowns. I think that is the norm from the circles I grew up in. Then, the bride and groom bought each bridesmaid/groomsman a gift. Often, too, the bridesmaids then do not purchase a wedding gift for the couple; paying for the dress is their contribution. I would consider it a high honor to be asked and really wouldn't mind buying my own dress. Hopefully it wouldn't be hideous :) I have seen a trend now in a few weddings where the bride will just ask her bridesmaids to buy an after 5 black dress--whatever style. BUT if I was asked to stand up at a destination wedding, well, that would be another story if I wasn't well off enough to handle flights and accommodation. I wonder how that works for destination weddings...

Hello ladies, I have an all important interview coming up and I am thinking of buying some new clothes for it. I am a size 16 and am looking forward to buying a nice suit and some other formals. Can anyone suggest where in Dubai I can find some nice pieces for my size? Any suggestions on what I should wear? TIA edited by Desi girl on 22/11/2012 I was pleasantly surprised to find nice separates (pencil skirt, suit jackets, blouses and trousers) at Banana Republic. I am a US size 8, and was pleasantly surprised, because from memory, they didn't always seem to fit curvy women as well as they seem to now. I'm kind of tall, too, (175 cm) and really liked their length--didn't need to get anything tailored. They have nice shirts, too--but if you have a big deviation between chest and waist, they don't work. Thank goodness for Thomas Pink stretch!

Hat's a good idea! Well mine's frizzy anyway, so guess it cannot get worse :) Whatever you do, dont wear your cute shoes, they may damage. From memory, I think its grass. It's not far to walk from the different parking areas. I think I'll take that advice. Too warm for UGGs, guess it will be the eternal flip flops :)

I'm torn. I got a hat so I don't have to worry about my hair--this weather won't do it any favors. Does anyone who has been to this venue know 1) how far the walk is once a taxi drops you off, 2) if the golden circle standing area is grass or concrete? I got the cutest pumps, but I am too chicken to wear them. I can only imagine pain, pain, pain.

Happy Thanksgiving! I am giddy with excitement because I am going to my first TG dinner held by American friends! :) Oh how awesome! You'll enjoy, I'm sure! Mine is kind of weird. I am so happy to be going to JLo tonight with a good friend, but my DH is off in the jungle with the mosquitos. We just skyped, and said he prefers that to going to JLo. Then I was excited to get a skype call from my Mom, but realized either I got skyped by a huge glass of wine, or Mom's had too much fun cooking the bird and got key/mouse happy. Quite a sight!!

I really liked "The Passage" by Justin Cronin. It's the first of a trilogy, and "The Twelve" just came out. It's somewhat of a post-apocalyptic novel, but much better than any I have ever, ever read including "The Stand" by Stephen King and other vampire novels. "Shantaram" was recommended very highly to me, too, by many people so that's next on my list.

Officechick, I think I remember your post a few months back when you were thinking of separating--this sounds familiar? I think you need to follow your "gut." I don't like to suggest follow your head 100% (logic, pracitical, without feelings) nor would I suggest to follow your heart 100% (emotions without accepting facts). So it's just "there" in your gut. You know the answer, you just might not like the route you need to take for your life to go the way you want. No one likes to hurt anyone, and breakups are inconvenient and life changing if not hurtful all around. Put your happiness in your own hands. Looks like you are staying true to yourself, good luck x

From a different perspective, I could never imagine what it would be like to be born and raised here and see Dubai change the way it has, and see what I considered to be my culture and comfort zone obliterated over time because of the booming tourism. It's nice to benefit from a country with a good economy, but it comes at a price. Edited to add: like other ladies have said, my local friends couldn't care less--but I try to see it from the viewpoint of those who do care, which is why I watch what I wear to public places like malls, or when I venture into Old Dubai. edited by Beebers on 20/11/2012

It seems like they have quite a mess with finding new accommodation for the displaced residents :( I am trying to decipher between Taweel Cluster U page and the Friends at JLT page. Seems accommodation is the main concern at the moment along with some talk about vouchers for Carrefour being the most useful thing someone can donate. Does anyone know which page to follow, or if donating nice condition used clothing is useless at this point?

I don't know the fashion at the moment, so not sure just how short, short is, but, anyone who would look wrongly at a 13 year old child, because that is all she is, really needs help!!! I second this, but when I was 13 years old, I was often mistaken for 18 due to my curves and size. It's all relative, but sooner or later OP's daughter has to be aware of where she is. Fashion shouldn't trump appropriateness.

Actually I've always rather enjoyed Gorobatties lopsided, lengthy sentences and the dents and faults in her posts added charm - for me - to [b'>her always sound advice[/b'>. It was refreshingly different from the crisp one liners posters usually leave. I was thinking the same thing :) Gorabottie has a good sense of humor, and has often given very sound advice regarding marriage trouble, relationships, and the like--especially to women who have posted that are being taken advantage of. She puts a lot of time into her replies. It is obvious she is very keen on the take with things of this nature. So she got close with one of her maids during a really stressful part of her life. I personally wouldn't mind honest advice given to me on this forum, but the comments about inappropriate relations with her DH and the other party--that was quite insulting--who could blame her reaction? Gorabottie, you are an asset to this forum and I'm sure you'll get through this situation just fine now that you've gotten it off your chest. x

Beebers - where do you get ginger garlic paste from? I just get the Agri Gold brand in the Indian foodstuff aisle--the 300g jar. Like DesertRose said, you could make a batch, in bulk--and I should probably be doing the same :) I was wrong--it's Thai Choice Fish Sauce I use--because it's anchovy extract, salt, and a little sugar. I usually select brands/products based on lack of additives and such. Same with the coconut milk--other brands have upset my stomach so I get Blue Dragon. I'm sure any brand would suit what you need :) Russian, I think I will explore some yellow curries this week, thanks! I'm getting a little greened out!

Icoolie, this is one from Nigel Slater which I modified a bit and do 2x a week. Love it! For the paste: 6-8 chopped green thai chilis handful lemongrass (or 1-2 TBSP of the minced lemongrass + some lemon zest) zest of one lime juice of 1 lime 1 TBSP ginger garlic paste (this makes life easy instead of using cloves + shaving ginger) 1/2 TBSP to 1 TBSP fish sauce (I use Blue Dragon) handful chopped coriander leaves 1/2 white onion chopped, or 2 small shallots 1/2 TBSP freshly ground pepper I mix all this these in a mini food processor until I have a slushy paste. Additional items 400g aubergine 50-100g cubed pumkpin or butternut squash 50-100g red capsicum 1/2 box or full box of white button mushrooms 2-3 TBSP groundnut oil 400mL stock (i use a vegetable bullion cube dissolved in 400 mL water) 400 mL coconut Milk (I like to use a can of Blue Dragon). coriander leaves and basil leaves to garnish. Green onion also works nicely :) In a wok, I heat up 2 TBSP groundnut oil. When hot, I add 500-600 grams total of the following mixed veggies: Aubergine mostly, then some cubed pumpkin, and finally red capsicum. Once nicely browned and slightly carmelized (but not mutilated!) I add 1/2 box to a box of sliced white button mushrooms. Immediately, I add 4 TBSP of the curry paste, mixing it all together. Once it is well absorbed into the veggies, I add the stock, simmer for a few minutes, and add the coconut milk, and simmer a little longer. I try not to overcook at this point or the coconut taste gets totally lost. I have served this over rice with grilled white fish, like shark, tilapia, or even scallops seared on top. You can also salt it a bit throughout, but I don't think it needs it. :)

thank u ladies... @beebers....the jar one is dried right? i like my chai(indian tea) with lemon grass....i m in downtown...will chk spinneys n waitrose. Hi, no--it actually looks minced, which is a little weird. I only had to use it once in a pinch, and ending up adding a little lemon zest to bring more of that flavor out. It's the little Thai Choice jar, but Blue Dragon makes a more decent version with the grass reeds--it's also in a bottle of liquid, if that makes sense.

I always see it in the Thai produce section at the Carrefour at MOE. You can find lime leaves, chilis, and the like along with lemongrass :) I also keep lemongrass which comes in a jar handy in case C4 is out of stock--I purchase the jar at Waitrose.
