Watching, and watched yesterday! Was a bit jarring at first, lol No idea who they are. Last year, didn't we have the same thing?--practice runs leading up to the show that coincides with the parachuting championships which start the 28th? Or am imagining it?

Hand sanitisers are not as effective as washing hands with soap and water. I have suspected as much. I don't rely on those. Plus they wreck my hands! I just try to ninja myself around, and scrub when I have the opportunity!

Beebers! How was it? :) Aha, you noticed I have been quiet. >:( Gutted. We couldn't go because my DH had conference spread throughout the entire day. He has promised to take me once he is back in town. I thought about hopping on the metro and venturing there myself, but he wants to see it, too--so I guess I'll wait.

I try not to be a germaphobe to the point where I make people around me uncomfortable (or look like a princess) but I do everything to avoid holding bars on the metro, touching escalators, bathroom doors and the like. If I do, I scrub my hands as soon as possible. In most bathrooms, it's easy to wash your hands and grab an extra paper towel to grab the handle on the way out. I have a friend that is a statistician and after she rattled off some figures to me the other day--which I have blocked from my memory--I am glad I behave as I do. Don't even get me started on chips and nuts at the pub! yick!

UK and US guidelines are all well and good, but I wonder what the UAE guidelines are? When things like huge tyres, glass bottles, dead animals, and debris are frequently seen in the middle of the road and we have to swerve! I agree there is a moral duty but that is not always possible - in fact I think it causes more obstruction and chaos for someone who has hit an animal (who will clearly be panicked) to pull over safely (who pulls over safely here? People barely indicate!) and then try to remove it from a busy road. It is very very sad but it happens every day and if the vets were inundated with people bringing in injured cats they would literally be doing nothing else. Nine times out of ten these cats will die if not by being hit by a car then just by being a stray. A lady on here was asking for people to chip in 3,500dhs to save an injured cat. Sad as it is, if a stray is severely run over, then I can understand why people don't stop, if it is someone's pet that is entirely different. I agree. I would personally assess the situation based on highway vs. quiet neighborhood street, and make sure I didn't put myself in harm's way. We have all read about how trying to change a tire on the side of the road can end your life around here! I wanted to help an injured opossum once that we ran over, and my Dad said not a chance--no idea what diseases it's carrying, plus it would probably bite. As much as I love animals, I would worry about disease or getting run over trying to help.

If I recall, the guidelines in the U.S. are that should a driver hit an animal, and as a result, there is a road obstruction which could harm others, it is the driver's responsibility to remove the injured animal from the road. I don't remember domestic animal guidelines, only wildlife that would be large enough to cause an accident for another vehicle. But I have stopped for an armadillo before, so I probably am not the best person to chime in. edited by Beebers on 18/11/2012

So funny Beebers! My mum always makes her own with egg for my Dad. I'm with you though, not a fan. I found another recipe, rice milk, lemon, seasoning and canola oil. Going to carrefour then will try it out this afternoon, not expecting too much! Thanks for your feedback. Between the 2 of us we make work it out :) or find someone who stocks it! Yeah seriously :) Sand Fairy, I forgot to say I added some pink salt. I had read that about the oil (google is my friend :)) but, I also saw a couple of recipes made with olive oil, and having 2 or 3 litres lying around, decided to try it first. I think the apple cider vinegar cancels out the olive taste. It's been sitting in the fridge "setting" for an hour, so I'll see if anything changes. It's for DH anyway--I only care if he likes it. I'll probably use a different oil for my egg free version and some dijon mustard. I saw a recipe with tahini that looks cray-mazing! edited by Beebers on 18/11/2012

Beebers I also saw a recipe that had xanthan gum, but I don't have any. Might try yours first. I'll await your trial first! Thanks again girls. TimTam, I don't know if my friend that recommended this recipe lives on a different planet--but it's worthless! Granted, I used oat milk, not soy, but the consistency is the same between the two. Just a major no go. However, since I had all my gear out this morning, DH asked if I would make some homemade mayo [i'>with[/i'> eggs. It was a first attempt (well, second, if you account for the botched egg free version) and he said it tastes "just like miracle whip." Which apparently is something he likes. yuck! lol So if anyone reading this wants to know, 1 egg yolk + 1 tsp cider vinegar + 1/4 cup EVOO + 1 tsp organic caster sugar is supposedly good and "Miracle Whip" like. Actually doesn't have an olive oil flavored bite to it, but it's not my cup of tea. After I go to the spice souk today, I am going to try more egg free versions. :) I'm glad I have been saving all these cute mini tomato paste jars, looks like they'll come in handy!

Anything could have started the fire But yes, i have seen people throwing their cigarette butts onto other people's balconies. You can only imagine if the balcony has inflammable stuff.... I have seen that firsthand. WTH are people thinking?? I just read resident accounts that they 1) heard an explosion 2) heard ear piercing fire alarms. It started on the roof and then falling debris from the roof fell on balconies, cars below--ugh so horrible! I am so glad that all the residents heard the alarms, because in Tecom last week and last month, people smelled smoke and that fact alerted them. No alarms :(

I'll share :) but sounds like our Mom & Dad gifts are similar! Nephews: easy. We have 8, and each year, we buy them gold bars. My parents: my siblings and I always get a spa day for Mom, and whatever hunting/fishing gimmick my Dad wants--like a gun scope or a new open face reel (my brother gets the intel on their trips) DH's parents: a case of their favorite boutique wine Brothers/sister's and their spouses: Fancy restaurant gift certificates for date nights My DH and I usually spend Christmas somewhere different each year, so it is custom for us to get each other a locally inspired accessory :) i.e. beaded African Jewlery, Native American silver belt buckle, Lapiz cufflinks--depends where we are. It's fun!

Meagle is exactly right. Anon, if the individual is poverty stricken, with no assets like a home, chances or they will get a monthly social security check based on taxed income from previous years, plus Medicare, plus would probably qualify for Medicaid. We may see a big change, though, with the "fiscal cliff" coming up. Obama could cut Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid programs by 650 billion to avoid this cliff. Just google "Grand Bargain." It's anyone's guess what will happen with this in the next couple of years.

I admit I had to giggle a bit reading this thread. Come on now ladies, surely you all realize the market for such services here in the UAE is gigantic, illegal or not... As for reporting it to the police, there's really nothing they'll be able to do. I very much doubt the website will be hosted inside the UAE, and despite all their "surf safely" (haha) efforts the internet is still free for all. Let it go, it's just spam. I wonder about the internet "surf safely" bit here! I tried to log onto a fitness clothing website and got that message ?! And another time, followed a link to a website called something like archaelogistnews.com and was redirected to a Japanese...er..."massage techniques" website which was quite graphic! LOL

I am in the opposite camp. At least as far as any devices, appliances, or restaurants. My DH outresearches me any day of the week. We were in Crate and Barrel today, and as I was looking at woks, he rattled off all the pros and cons of each variety, leaving me to feel like a just-browsing-know-nothing-imbecile. Later, when I was browsing cameras elsewhere, I just said "Ok, give me the lowdown." It's kind of nice having Mr. Consumer Reports around.

Hi Audrey, I giggled when I saw your post, only because I feel like that sometimes, too. When I was working it didn't affect me as much, as I was knackered, too, but since I am no longer--I get frustrated at times. My DH owns his own businesses, so I used to whine that he can surely set some time aside for us, right? He has meetings by day, and takes clients out many nights--so on "free" nights, he wants to chill with a movie. The last thing he wants is to go to some souk or ride dune buggys. What helps me is to remind myself what a wonderful man I have, and admire his work ethic; a lot of women would wish for that in a husband! If I want to get out, I see if any of my girlfriends want to go hang, or go alone. Of course it doesn't replace romantic outings, but we have learned to schedule those in like any other appointment. Perhaps you could approach him with "I know how tired you must be, and I appreciate your hard work. I would like to get out the house more, can we schedule something?" You're not alone in feeling this way and it doesn't make you unappreciative--so whatever you do, don't feel bad.

I thought it wasn't like that in the USA but it seems that it is! Only the wealthy elderly can have good healthcare. I'm getting worried for someone in particular. I'm just wondering if it is better to have zilch as an elderly American and live in elderly housing or to have a little. If you have nothing, you get some benefits, right? The person I am referring to is not married and was never in the military. OK I see what you mean, now. DBuffin sounds like she has a good grasp of this--and it is state dependent. I am not sure what Medicaid is like in the state this individual is in--but they could be ineligible if they have too much--even if it really isn't much. Good luck with this, I know how heartbreaking it is x

Hi Beebers! How did your grandmother afford all the medication? I have been told that if you are on Medicare and can't afford your medication, that you just can't get it, even if the lack of it kills you. Is this true? Anon, that sounds right! She didn't take any meds other than cumidin (blood thinner, think that is how you spell), which I believe was fairly cheap. Actually, she had never been to a hospital in her life until she got run over by a hit and run driver, walking on the sidewalk, age 90. She broke her hip in that accident, and after, my mother was taking care of her due to decreased mobility. Unfortunately, since Mom couldn't always be there, she fell in her home and broke her hip again. It was heartbreaking, and after that second break, she really needed someone full time. I know she had some other complications with that break but can't remember the details, which warranted the extra care. The nursing homes are just extortionate. They would actually charge per aspirin, and per "administration" on TOP of that heinous monthly charge. They sold her home and used that money over the next decade to help pay the fees, along with selling some of her bonds. That was the only way it got paid. Unfortunately for the baby boomer generation, I doubt there will even be social security in another 15-20 yrs. Luckily some have planned for that, but a serious illness like cancer would be devastating in both the obvious ways and financially. edited by Beebers on 15/11/2012

Anon, not sure if this is helpful, but my late Grandma was living on about $1100 a month in combined social security checks and checks from the gov't based on my Grandpa being in the War. It sure wasn't much. She had Medicare which did about zip for her in her late 90's--it barely deflected the care she needed (she needed to either be in a home or in have home care 24/7) which totaled about $7500 a month--after Medicare. These days, I don't know that much has changed. Social Security depends on how much each individual earned and taxed out--of course--and besides Medicare, I don't know what else there is unless their spouse was or is a veteran. She passed in 2010 and this was the case at that time.

OP I know the feeling. I used to use Schwarzkopf semi permanent, and loved it. All I needed was to coat the hair with a depositing darker color; not "lift" the color--not sure if you go darker than your natural or lighter. I felt it was less damaging than permanent, and it didn't fade between my once a month colorings. I would also keep the dye I didn't use, and add shampoo to the bottle--which I would use once every 10 days in place of my normal shampoo to revamp the deepness of the brown. I was always "dyeing" to try Phyto's home hair color, because I love the product line. Only seen that one at the chemist, though, and have no feedback.

How'd that happen Beebers? You could help crack the case of how word on expats not owning the land for freehold properties bought travelled from mouth-to-mouth is turned into fact on an internet forum? :D Wow, I might have to enlist Sherlock Holmes for that one. yikes, undertaking! Anon, it's when the white of your eye turns red. It happened when I was having sinus pressure last weekend, and blew my nose rather hard. Just a freak deal. Doctor said it's fine, just looks awful, and not to worry--gone in 2 weeks. Oh, that's it? greeeeeeeeeeat. :( ETA, funny you should mention that topic, Shop--I've been reading those threads closely as my DH and I have bounced around the idea of owning property here. Since he has a Dubai based business, we will always require a presence here. It would almost make sense to own, but we are wary to do so, and may just keep an apartment here for that purpose. edited by Beebers on 15/11/2012
