Congrats to all on the upcoming Feb babies! Tootypy, I agree with Coffee Mates great advice as well. I am with Dr Britt, and after my first appointment last week, I am very confident I made the right choice. The appointment was quick as she had a baby to deliver but I could tell from the get-go that she is definitely the right doctor for me. I went back to the UK last time to have my son and was a bit wary on delivering here to be honest, but I am very at ease with it all now after selecting the right doctor and hospital. I did initially want to go to Al Zahra mainly because they have a pool to labour in that sounds great & more midwife led, but my insurance doesn't cover it & non reimbursable out of network. If you aren't restricted by insurance then I would definitely consider choosing either City or Al Zahra, both seem to be popular with western expats and meet with our UK type expectations (or even better). Norts, I know someone with Dr Ibrahim and she is very happy with him. Oh your so lucky you escaped the morning sickness! Thank god we are all getting over that stage though and progressing on to the next. So ladies, I guess the next milestone for us is the 20 wk scan. Where are you all booked in? I got a referral for Dr George but realised after making my appointment that my insurance doesn't cover his clinic, so I asked to be referred within City instead. Not sure why the doctors at City seem to prefer their patients to go to Dr George for the scan. I am sure he is great, but I don't see the point to pay out of pocket when I can get what I need from within City and have it fully covered. Do you all know what you are having? or is anyone keeping it a surprise? The Dr is pretty sure this one is a girl but it was a very quick scan last week as she was in a rush so we need to have it reconfirmed at the 20 wk scan. However, I am 99.9% sure it is a girl as I saw my sons scan at this stage and it was glaringly obvious that he was a boy, this time there was a major lack of boy parts! Hi there, after a few years of following these threads and now in my second pregnancy, I always had the impression that there are very few qualified places in Dubai to do the 20 week scan (both in terms of equipment and Dr qualifications) and usually the ones that come up are FMC and Dr George. Since apparently many City doctors refer their patients to Dr George this may mean that the hospital itself is not fully qualified to do this scan. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I think you should investigate further and get fully comfortable that the Dr/clinic you are planning to do it at is well qualified.

Whether you need Platinum or not should be determined by the gym you plan to frequent; if it is a Platinum gym then you need a Platinum membership; however there are different "levels": off peak, being able to access other gyms, etc. and this affects the price. I recently paid 4,499 for 12 months plus 3 months free but it was supposedly an August special promotion; you could probably still push for it and get it. This is all hours, all gyms access btw. If you see my other post regarding FF you'll see that I don't rate them high at all; if there are other options near where you live/work, I suggest you reconsider your choice.

All of these are valid points and your son is still very young, however, if some milestones are significantly delayed it is a good idea to see a Dr, preferably a qualified one in this matter, because in some cases there can be underlying medical reasons. A friend's child didn't walk until 21 months which is late by all accounts and when she was 2,5 they found out that she has some sceletal issue that was making it very painful for her to walk, hence why she had been resisting it. I know this is not a common occurence, just saying that after a certain point, if important milestones are significantly delayed, you should consider seing a Dr. Hopefully though it won't come to this, your son is very young and he will probably soon surprise you with his achievements, these things can just happen overnight!

Marital issues aside, more to the point in this matter is that I don't know of any "Western" countries that would allow a parent to issue a passport without the other parent's express consent. I had to sign a notarized form for my husband to apply for our child's passport from his country and he had to do the same for me in my home country. Unless your husband is from a joke of a country he may have falsified your signature/authorization in which case you should file a case (country embassy, police, etc) and request that the passports are cancelled.

Is there a reason you are specifically looking for one piece? I find it's easier to manage with a bikini style especially if the bottom part has adjustable sides so you can make it fit more comfortably. And it may be easier to buy a different size top if needed, I tend to be small or medium for the bottom and by now large or XL for the top so I find it impossible fitting in most things. I do wear an SPF top over the bikini and that covers my tummy too, in case that is a factor in your considerations, most sports shops have a good variety. In fact you may also find swimming suits there; have you checked Decathlon, Model's, Sun & Sand etc? Sometimes Debenhams and M&S have good options too. Good luck!

Glad to see more Feb babies joining! Tootypy, Coffee Mate's advice is great, hope that helped. I am with Gr George (for the second time) and I really like him and trust him but his clinic is on a pay and claim basis so depending on your insurance you may be out of pocket for a while or they may not cover the whole amount (for "out of network" they tend to cover about 80%). Many ladies have been recommending Al Zahra hospital lately, it's near Tecom/Marina in case that's closer top you, go check it out, they're supposed to be more midwife led as in the UK.

Hi Mols, No issues, assuming they have done the paperwork required at the POLO office before departing; if not they can also do it in the Philippines but they need to have all the documents with them (filled out employer questionnaire, information sheet, original labor contract, passport and labor card copies of sponsor and themselves).

I have been a member for just over 4 years and I believe it was about 2 years ago when the Landmark Group took over the management. Since then things have been deteriorating fast in my opinion. I was a member at Media City which used to be great but I haven't been in almost 2 years. Then I switched to DIFC as I work here and it is convenient to go at lunchtime; it is a Platinum gym supposedly but the state of it leaves a lot to be desired: exercise areas are dirty, exercise mats are few, filthy and falling apart in pieces, very few swiss balls, bosus, etc. Terrible bathrooms and showers. Over the last 9 months most PTs from DIFC have resigned, apparently many had issues with the management. I renewed my membership 10 days ago and the next day I received an email informing me that they would be closing the showers for 6-8 weeks for refurbishments. Never was that mentioned when they were selling me the new membership. I submitted a complaint and waiting to hear back from the manager, however I know from other members who complained that they were told they could go and use other FF gyms. Boils my blood to hear this, because I can only go to the gym at lunchtime and hence I can only use the one at the DIFC. I'm sure it's the same situation for many other people, especially for working mothers who can't just go somewhere else after work. I really hope they will get some decent competition in the DIFC area, I'll be glad to leave FF when that happens.

Hi there, I recall reading there was a place at the Polo Club and then there are a couple of nurseries in Motorcity, but I know several people from AR also send their kids to Blossom in Academic City and I would highly recommend it from personal experience (been there for a a year, I have a 24 month old). As of today they also offer a bus service that covers Arabian Ranches but it can only be used for children 2 and older so your daughter wouldn't qualify yet. If it's not too far for you, you should go check it out.

Hi Ladies just wanted to know if any ladies knew of good private clinic that does 4d scan and 20 week morphology scan in AD or Al ain? Hi DxBMum, Sorry, not familiar with either, but if it's not too much hassle coming to Dubai, both FMC and Dr George get high ratings here.

Imported items in Dubai are that much more expensive not because they are imported, but because the market is an oligopoly run by big family businesses (or in fact a monopoly if you are only intersted in one brand). Import costs and taxes etc. can be high in many places around the world; why would Armani or Brioni mens trousers made in Italy be at least 30% cheaper in the US than they are here? Same goes for most items. I can understand that peaches from Australia have to be more expoensive than peaches from Spain in the supermarket but that's where I stop justifying import costs.

Hi VZ, I have heard many good things about dr Britt so if you want a woman Dr see how it goes with her. But Dr George is great too; I did all my 1st trimester screening with him 2 weeks ago and everything came back fine thankfully. I also did the NiPT out of choice, it wasn't necessary, but gave me more peace of mind.

Congrats VZ! I'm due Feb 25 and it's my second as well, I have a 2yr old daughter. I am with Dr George but I will probably go back home for the delivery as I did the first time, so not too concerned about hopsitals. If I were to give birth in Dubai though I'd be going to City hospital where my Dr delivers. I've been having nausea and a constant feeling of indigestion but it's much better than the first time so I'm just waiting for a couple more weeks when hopefully it will pass. How about yourself?

I'd probably go with Park'n'Shop; no point spending a fortune on a 1st birthday cake they will neither remember, nor appreciate it. I'm speaking from experience after a big production of an enormous and elaborate 1st birthday cake for our daughter (not arranged by me, mind you), it could have been anything, at that age it makes no difference to the child.

Dear Kiwispiers, I'm sad to hear you won't be posting any more well balanced and useful information and well thought out opinions not just in the baby board but in general too. Hopefully your old posts will keep coming up in searches so that new members/mommies can benefit from the info. I have hugely enjoyed reading your posts and when I was a first time (panicking) mommy there were many times when your wise words calmed me down. Thank you so much for this and best of luck in whatever the future may bring!

To return to the OP's original question, when I was looking for a maid all the ones I spoke to announced the following "no-no" list: -Locals (that is in the UAE, not sure if they feel the same about Oman) -Other Arabs -Indians The reasons they give are those mentioned below but of course, as was mentioned, these are generalizations. Can't blame them though, as much as we feel we "suffer" from an unrully maid, imagine what they go through in the hands of the wrong family...they can make their lives a living ****. Those that have a choice should be selective and references can go both ways.

I think you will find that India was recently 'UN declared polio free' which means they have gone 3 years with no cases reported. Just to add to this, there have been reports in the news recently that polio cases have been identified in Pakistan, Afganistan and I think Syria (don't recall all the countries) and that as a result the UAE authorities are recomending not just that children are vaccinated, which is mandatory, but that adults should also have booster shots. I checked with Healthbay Polyclinic and they confirmed that polio booster shots are recommended for adults. However, you have to be careful as you should not be vaccinated if pregnant and in case the vaccine available is the live virus you also should not be vaccinated if you are trying to get pregnant as you need to allow a minimum of 3 months from vaccination time to getting pregnat time.

You will not be asked for a vaccination record upon entering Linalou so the answer is none. The ones that are required here at birth you can do once here, assuming you will be living in Dubai. I had them done for DD when she was 2months old and there were no issues. Polio is on the mandatory schedule and if I recall correctly is done at 6 months.

Not disagreeing with anybody, the point I was trying to make is that technology is not bad for toddlers but it should of course be introduced and used in a balanced manner. DD has a very rich vocabulary, can count to 10 and mostly sing her ABCs and this is primarily because we speak to her a lot at home and we recite things, read books, point out things. However, the iPad apps (if carefully chosen) can also re-inforce that. It is not meant as a substitute but as we all know toddlers have a short attention span, so after reading books, playing games, doing puzzles, building towers with blocks, painting, singing, swimming, going to the park, going to nursery, the iPad becomes just one more option in my arsenal:-) She has zero interest in it on flights btw, she loves airplanes so much that she just wants to look at the clouds outside the window, walk up and down the aisle, etc.

In principle I would agree with no iPad time for toddlers. In practice however, my 20 month old spends about an hour a day on the iPad and has done so since she was about 15 months. I have carefully selected the apps and to be honest it has been a positive experience. She has learned so much in terms of counting, recognizing animals, shapes, letters, making puzzles, singing songs. And she is very good at handling the iPad as a device, always impresses me what yound kids are capable of. I see that they now have iPads at many nurseries for educational purposes and I can see the point of this. Our DD is very active and she spends a lot of time outdoors at the park, for walks, swimming lessons, play dates so I don't think we lack balance. As much as I like the romantic idea of my youth (running barefoot in the streets, playing with animals, playing hide and seek, etc.) the truth is our life is different now and I prefer to go along with the good things or at least find a positive side to the increased use of technology, where possible.

Bear in mind that in most cases the minimum age for summer camp attendance is 2yrs, so your child may be too young. You may be better off looking for nurseries that stay open during the summer, for example I know Hummingbird at the DIFC usually stays open all year long.

Life pharmacy has very good prices on baby formula; I haven't bought in a couple of months now as DD has stopped it, but I had previously compared to several supermarkets and it was cheaper. If there's one near you go and take a look, I used to buy mine at the SZR branch, near the Financial Center metro station.

Hi JJBAUS, Happy to give you the Marie Mongan book, TBH I didn't rate it highly and I can't foresee using it again so you're welcome to have it. If you can post your email I can give you pick up options. I did read a book by Ina May that my doula/hypnobirthing coach gave me and I found it wonderful, so positive but also real and down to earth. I can't remember the name but it had loads of stories from ladies who gave birth at the farm, or whatever the called their establishment. It was an old copy and apparently hard to find but if you use Amazon, especially the US version you may find it. Highly recommended, if i can find the name i'll post it here.

Hello Mols, Our experience of CO was different but I'm only mentioning as a piece of advice so that you can explore that aspect a bit further and not find yourself in the situation we were in. DD started at CO (the original branch, not Burj) in September, you know where she was previously and she had always been very happy there. I also chose CO because of its great reputation and the nice setup/lovely garden. It did not work for us at all and we ended up taking DD out in mid October (so after 6 weeks), forfeiting the fees and putting her at Blossom (BELC). DD has always been very sociable, friendly, loves being in new environments, exploring, etc., so at the time we were very confused as to why she seemed to dislike CO so much, she was crying when we dropped her off and couldn't run out of the door fast enough when we would go to pick her up. At some point I thought it might have been a phase she was going through and not CO related but then the next day I took her to Blossom and se was so happy being there she didn't want to leave. In the end our conclusion was that it was teacher related; her teacher was a young British girl, apparently quite disinterested in teaching or being around kids, warm is a word one would never have used to describe her and her demeanor. Kids are perceptive to these things, at least that is my experience from DD; DD wasn't the only unhappy child there, the entire class seemed to be crying at all times. After having been with Blossom for 5 months, I will say that the ethos and guidance of management rubs off on the "floor" at the nursery and in my opinion CO are perhaps resting on their laurels from years past when there was very little competition and maturity in the nursery market. So, my advice is to find out who your son's teacher will be and go have a chat/observe her in the classroom. If you are not entirely happy with what you see don't do it. Email me if you want to chat further and best of luck, hope your son will love whichever place you end up choosing for him!

Hi Carla 1, Hard for any of us to know but I'd say it's equally hard for your home country Dr. In my opinion the best placed Dr to advise you is the one who can physically examine you and that has already happened, and thankfully she gave you positive reassurance. Now, if you can rest then do it for your peace of mind but don't get too stressed over this as stress can certainly have a negative impact on your pregnancy. Another option would be to go for a second opinion, see another Dr who can do a scan and check your cervix. If both say the same thing after having physically examined you then you should calm down and not think about it again. I wish you the best for the remainder of your pregnancy!

Hi Mols, We got one from Babyshop (I think it was the MCC branch) after checking Ace, IKEA, that shop in Times Sq and online. It is metal with extensions, can be pressure mounted of screwed onto the wall which is what they recommend if it is on the top of the stairs. The opening we had to cover was 1,20cm however there was a big piece of extension we did not use so I'm thinking the whole thing might have worked for you. We had to ask an assistant at the shop to look for one for us as it wasn't displayed and it was at least twice the price of all other gates they had. Hope they still carry it, very good quality.

Foot Locker (standalone and in departments stores e.g. at Debenhams) usually carry baby sizes for both and I also saw a shop yesterday at Dubai Mall that I can't recall the name of now, it was one of big sport shoe stores but this is a "Kids" branch, it was near the Aquarium and they seemed to have a large varietry of baby shoes.

Just to add that Dr Abdullah Al Khayat is also excellent; he has a private practice at Medical Specialist Center on Mina Rd and also happens to be the CEO of Latifa hospital which can work out very well if you need a referral to another doctor. Wonderful manner, very gentle, lovely gentleman and appears to be very experienced. I checked with two paediatricians whose opinion I rate and they both recommended him so I assume he has a good reputation in Dubai.

Hi Jussie, I had an emergency C section but I was already on epidural so they just increased they dosage and I was ready to go within minutes. The op itself went very fast but where I gave birth (not Dubai) they would not let the baby stay with me. I started feeling awkward once I was in my room since I could not feel my legs for several hours but by the morning (I had the op around 1am) I could get up and walk slowly so it wasn't bad. I don't know if they do it in other places, but where I had the op, they impose anti-thrombosis socks for one week and believe it or not that for me was the worst part about having a C section:-) I was on panadol for 2 weeks, as I still had significant pain but it was manageable. The scar healed very well, although at first I thought it looked scary and could not imagine how it could ever improve, 5 months later it was already much fainter and by now, 17 months later you can barely see it. But I believe a lot of this depends not only on the skill of the doctor but also your skin's ability to heal which can vary greately from one person to the next. Good luck with everything!

At the cost of sounding like a racist. .your chances are brighter if you hold an Australian/ nz or any other European passport as compared to asian ones.. She has European and North American, just not British. I know American curriculum schools usually state that students with North American passports have priority but considering the high number of UK curriculum schools and the fact that many of them have been around for much longer I was wondering if this is also the case there, though I have not seen it mentioned in school provided info. Thanks for the info, I suppose it is what it is:-)

Hi there, I recall reading here a few months ago about a concierge type company that provides this service, perhaps if you search for concierge services in the posts you will find it. I also know some people use taxis and send their maids and car seats along for nursery, I suppose you would do the same for school if you have a maid and she can install the car seat. As for hiring a driver I have been told it's about 2,000 to 3,000 a month but that depends on times you need/experience/type of vehicle etc. I hope others can give more accurate info as mine is just hearsay.

Sorry for the slight highjack but since there is a thread with DESS questions I thought I might also ask one:-) I was told by an alumnus recently that we are highly unlikely to get accepted since DD does not hold a British passport; now, their experience is from 20 years ago so perhaps this was the case back then, but could DESS parents comment as to whether there is a stated or otherwise policy of giving priority to British passport holders/offering a certain number of places for non Bristish passport holders?

DD had bronchitis when she was 9 months old and the Dr prescribed a ton of meds including Ventolin to be used with a nebulizer which I found pretty useless to be honest. I did not use some of the things he prescribed as I thought it was overkill and I just made sure I kept her nose clear with saline spray. It took a few weeks to pass but as she didn't have other symptoms and wasn't in discomfort it was ok. Some Drs will scare you by making an offhand link to asthma, that's what the Dr we had seen did. I have not been back to that Dr but I would highly recommend Dr Keith Nicholl who we tend to see these days. I am not familiar with Dr Talal but the profile sounds similar so you'd probably be ok with either. Dr Keith has his clinic on Jumeirah Beach Road near Al Thanya, you can look up their website if you want to go.

Both my DDs clothes were just washed in the same product I had always used and nearly 30 years later they're both fine. Never had a problem. Unless your new born has a skin problem, majority of the stuff you see and read is marketing hype on behalf of the manufacturers. It's not that I disagree with your statement Geordie expat, to each their own I suppose, but I always find similar type statements misplaced; it's like my mom saying "we didn't have car seats when you were babies and you survived". This is an extreme example but I do believe it's a bit misleading to raise the "30 years ago" card to new mums; though several products exist today that may not be necessary and could be attributed to good marketing, there are many that do respond to a need and they probably do help keep our young kids safer and healthier:-)

I've been using Purex (they have a baby version) and I've also tried Ecover and Purity in the past but I was happier with Purex. I find it in most supermarkets. Many people recommend avoiding fabric softener for newborns/young babies and I did too, mostly because DD had a pretty constant skin rash for the first 3 months. In that case you can add a little bit of white vinegar which helps soften the clothes and some say also removes detergent residue.

Colours have you tried some of the new schools that are opening? I have seen ads for the new Safa school near Miracle Garden and Nord Anglia school and I think Gems Al Khail may still have places. Best check the new schools where you may have better luck with availability and at the same time keep pursuing whichever other school you had in mind as I suppose it is always possible they may have spots come up if other families that have received offers don't end up taking them. However in such a case it will depend how far up the waiting list you are and whether they will reach you so it may be a big risk to take if you don't have alternatives.

Hi there L36, I don't have a child in school but I've been doing a lot of research on this and other fora in the past year in preparation for our school applications; I would advise you to use the search function and search both for Victory Heights and Repton, a lot of opinions will come up (and that is what they are, opinions). From my research I got the impression Repton does not have a stellar reputation here, perhaps you are thinking of the UK Repton? Of course Victory Heights is new so there isn't much history behind it. Have you visited both? I went to visit a couple of very highly ranked schools that I later "rejected" because I didn't like the feel of the place, especially for the younger years. Good luck in your decision. <em>edited by Big blue on 12/02/2014</em>

am I right in thinking one of you has to be muslim to do this in the court? friends of mine both from UK non muslim married in AD but that was 7 years ago Yes, Jessp. My future husband is muslim, which is why I will be getting married that way. Not just "one of you", it has to be the male as a Muslim female cannot marry a non Muslim male (in terms of Sharia) and I believe the female can only be Christian as this is the only other religion that is... let's say tolerated.

I also just checked 312 behind the DIFC and was confused as there seemed to be bicycles as well as cars (other than race cars and police escort) going by. Any feedback from other roads that were supposed to be closed? Just had a look now and there isn't a car in sight on either side. They must have closed it due to cars driving in lanes they weren't supposed to...great...that would explain the heavy traffic at the front of the DIFC.
